Chicken Zinger Burger
Daniel D.

Fried chicken and Indian food? Well it's more of an Indian flare on fried chicken, but why not! My wife found this place on Yelp and wanted to give it a try since we were going to be in the area. There is a small amount of parking in front of the restaurant but some of them are only 30 minutes but they also have a drive through. The inside looks like a typical fast food restaurant and there are about 10 tables inside. You order at the counter and they will hand you a buzzer to notify you when to pick up your food. We ordered a few different things and everything tasted like you would expect. The 65 chicken was interesting and had a lot of flavor. The fried chicken was crispy and juicy. I got the spicy and it was decently spicy, but I have a higher spice tolerance. Tater tots were crispy with a powdered garlic taste. Overall, the food was tasty but reminiscent of fast food fried chicken. For the price, I don't think it's worth the money. Definitely worth a try though, especially if you're in the area.

Family meal with 10 tenders and fries
Nancy H.

The Family meal ($34.99) was a great deal with 10 chicken tenders already being worth more than the equivalent entree size, but it also came with a huge pile of fries. I would definitely return, for the same meal, but I really want to try their samosas and mango lassi. I found the chicken to have the perfect amount of crispy batter. For those of you who are not very tolerant of spicy foods, the chicken meat itself is amazingly tender but was marinated in something quite spicy so there is a lot of intrinsic heat to the chicken. Even though we ordered the no-spice option (but I think that applies to the batter). I demolished the chicken tenders, but it took a lot of water and nose-blowing to get me through the whole meal. I really enjoyed the dipping sauces (one of tasted like tikka masala?) The french fries are crispy and lightly coated with additional seasoned batter. They reheated perfectly in my air fryer with my leftover chicken tenders the next day. The garlic tots ($3.49) were deliciously crisp. Only the drizzle of sauce had garlic flavor so I definitely wish that it came with its own side of garlic sauce that we could dip the naked tots into. The Family meal also comes with two fountain drinks, but neither of us drink soda so we just drank water. I think they have all the usual assortment of sodas that you can self-dispense. The restaurant is casual. You order at the counter, and you pick up the food at the counter when they call you. We came at opening so it was very quiet (not even any music), but I like talking to my partner rather than shouting over music anyways. Although some low-volume music is always appreciated as background noise. There is a free parking lot with plenty of spots.

The fried chicken here is bomb! Very crispy, good flavor and have good heat. Personally I'm a spicy wimp so I can't really handle the spice that much but my friends loved the hot spice. I got classic and it had a hint of spiciness. The fried are very well done too. The chicken quality and crispy quality is well done. The location is a newer complex that has apartment complex and some cool food places.

Deccan bites is a halal/ Indian fusion fast casual restaurant. The options were unique and reminded me of places I have visited in my international travels. My wife got chai tea which was great. We shared the chicken zinger burger which was good, but the real star of the show was either the osmania biscuit or the Bun maska. The service was great and the young man who served us convinced us to try the freshly made bun. It was great and we ordered another so we could share with our kids who wolfed them down. The ambiance was chill with an international flavor. This place is legit and as I was looking at their menu again my mouth was beginning to water. We need to go there again and you need to give them a try.

Just realized I haven't reviewed this yet! I love the flavor this place has to offer! Definitely that tandoori flavor is there. Its for sure a halal place and their take on chicken sandwiches is excellent. Today I got wings with their special sauce amd garlic sauce on the side. Its quite delicious! For 10 wings its 10$ and I also got tots. Its about 3$. That garlic flavor made the tots just taste so much better. The cashier was friendly and helped me out with what's good. I've been here only twice. Its a good enough size for families getting a quick bite. Its clean inside and roomie. I'll come get other things for sure. Id really like to try their samosas and some breads. Im just on a strict diet so I can only have one tot and one chicken wing and a bite of a a chicken sandwich. I know, diabetes suck!

This Deccan Bites opened months ago. Parking was plenty. The indoor dining space is plenty. There were predominantly Indian guests here. I thought that was a good sign! I pre ordered on the phone. It was hard to hear and understand the worker. My order was almost ready when I arrived. The man at counter was blah at first but came alive after he opened up the Osmania cookie case. He said the smell was amazing. I ordered 3 but ordered more after he said that. They were pretty good but my teen didn't like them. Apparently on India the breakfast of choice is said cookies and Chai. It was lunch but I got both. They were a good pair. The coffee came out scalding hot. I really mean this as it spilled on me and was burning hot! I got the chicken burger. I really enjoyed it. It has the Indian spice in it that sets it apart. I'm really glad I came today.

- located in what seems to be a newly developed area below some apartment complexes, plenty of parking - loved the original chicken - it was flavorful, tender, and crispy - maybe it was because we had gotten takeout but the burger wasn't great - the bun was too stiff? and bready, it was very saucy for my taste, and the chicken wasn't juicy or tender at all - i would try this again fresh though - the sauces that came with the tots were wonderful - there was a curry and garlic sauce which were both so addictive

Deccan Bites is in a shiny and clean building.  Looks fairly new. I love broasted fried chicken and was excited to try Deccan Bites version.  You get 4 pieces for $16.99 and I chose the original flavor.  They fry to order so it took 15-20 minutes for my chicken to be ready.  I loved the crunchy batter which had amazing texture.  Chicken was moist and tender.  Flavor profile was interesting.  It was seasoned a bit like Tandoori chicken. French fries had a very thin crispy layer and a tasty fried potato flavor.  Very good. Cola drink tasted alot like an R.C. Cola.  I was looking at the ingredient list.  Made in Turkey and sweetened with sucralose.  My favorite cola is Mexican Coke sweetened with cane sugar. Cashier was nice and efficient.

It's still primarily a hot chicken shop, however the ownership has changed, and the products are now halal. Deccan Bites is a new business at The Hub in Scripps Ranch with a recent grand opening less than two weeks ago. The interior layout was the same as before, but all the previous branding has been removed. The menu was chicken (broasted, fried, grilled) seasoned with a South Indian flavor profile. Six combos were available in the center menu screen above the service counter. To the left were main items in the form of chicken legs, thighs, wings, tenders, nuggets, burgers, shawarma, and even a wrap. Snacks, sides, desserts, and beverages made up the right screen. The All Day Combo was my choice which featured a fried chicken leg and thigh, one side, and a fountain drink. My pick was the Potato Garlic Tots for a side. The two pieces of chicken had a nice crunchy crust with a masala marinade that had a moderate amount of spiciness. The tater tots were plain and came with a dipping sauce instead of being seasoned with garlic. Even with the halal preparation, I found the price to be high at $13.99 for this combo. Perhaps the non-fried offerings like the Chicken 65 and shawarma were better values at Deccan Bites.

Another weekend , another search and a new find. Menu wasn't wrong to convince me I'm going to revisit some of my college days. Chicken sandwich that I ordered was quite good and plenty to make for a meal. Fries and sauces equally good. Samosas are rather small bites than the usual ones but well that's what they've got. Get chai or mango lassi, it's all good. Parking wasn't an issue during middle of the day. Suggestion: put some music on.

Chicken Zinger Sandwich and Garlic Tots
Jack M.

This place has recently taken over Big Cheech's Chicken adjacent to Starbucks serving 100% hand slaughtered halal. After eating here, I have to say the crispy zinger burger definitely has some potential. The flavor was very tasty, but the chicken portion between the buns was to small relative to the size of the bun. If they stick with the same sesame seed bun, which is a very good bun, they definitely need to kick up the size of the fried crispy chicken in the burger, like they display on their advertisements. The DB sauce that came on sandwich was very good, the lettuce and tomatoes were fresh, and the American cheese not melted, which should of been. I order a side of the potato garlic tots, but they did not come with ant garlic on them. I did not understand that. When I question it, I was told the garlic was in the side sauce that came with the tots. Sadly, however, the sauce did not taste like garlic at all. I don't know about you, when I order garlic tots, they usually come with, at the very least, garlic seasoning, but preferably fresh garlic on top. They need to rethink how they make the garlic tots. Service was good. They offered not much conversation, but when it did happen, it was friendly.

The food was prepared well. The staff was very friendly and helpful in describing the menu. The food was tasty with a subtle spice unusual for this gringo. I intend to experience this cuisine again. The facility is clean yet simple. My suggestion is give this new fast food provider a chance

Paneer 65 Combo
Seetha G.

We came in on Opening Day... the place was super busy but service was extremely efficient- from both the kitchen as well as the janitorial staff who were promptly cleaning each table. The complimentary Irani Chai (for opening day) was delicious! The chicken 65 and paneer 65 combos were saucy kind rather than the crispy version, but paired with romali roti. The bun maska was mild and kid friendly. The chicken shawarma roll was delicious - with garlicky yogurt sauce keeping the filling moist and flavorful! The classic fast food interior was inviting with plenty of indoor seating and a couple of tables outdoors.

The food is was great and one of my favorite spots when I'm craving middle eastern wraps- I did built your own pita so of course I like the ingredients. I loved my pita bread (it's much different from the Greek style if you haven't tried it before!) and the enjoyed the steak in particular. It had a lot of warming spices (nutmeg and cinnamon maybe?) and the flavor is pretty unique! I added bell peppers, pickled cucumbers, lettuce, tomato, red onion, tahini sauce, and garlic sauce. I also got a piece of falafel - I always gotta judge a place by their falafel and this one was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside which was perfect. Next time I need to try the halloumi cheese stix with fig jam! Place was very clean and the decor was nice. I also love the Finjan coffee spot next door.

The staff is also consistently warm and kind, which makes the whole experience feel good from the moment you walk in. My only real frustration is with the wait times on online orders, and it's significant enough that I have to mention it. I work 10 min away and only get a 35-40 minute break. The app consistently quotes around 20 minutes- but honestly, 20 minutes shouldn't even be necessary. I've stood there and watched them make a bowl. It takes about two minutes. Other similar restaurants have my order ready in five minutes, consistently. So when the app quotes 20 and then I still end up waiting at the 20 minute mark on top of that - in a nearly empty restaurant - something is off. Today this happened (I hit the 20 min mark with no food), and I had to go up and ask them to make my order. This isn't a one-time thing either. It's happened enough times over the years that it genuinely deters me from coming here on my break. To their credit, there was a stretch where it seemed like they had it figured out, so I know they can do it. I just wish that consistency would stick. If you're not on a time crunch, absolutely go. The food alone is worth it. But if you're relying on a quoted pickup time, build in a buffer- a bigger one than you'd think you'd need.

The menu was a bit confusing, but I know that I like grilled veggies and Greek salad and then Ike was able to pick my protein that I wanted so that seemed easy enough. The base price with falafel or chicken Shawarma was Close to $16 but since I chose the meat, they added two dollars to my total. It took about 10 minutes for them to assemble my meal, but my veggies were cooked fresh on the stove, which was really nice. They tasted very freshly cooked just as they would as if I had cooked them myself at home. I was there about 1245 on a Monday and there were a few people there and they had some takeout orders so my order took about 10 minutes before I could walk out the door with it. They had a nice condiment bar where you could pick out some yogurt with dill sauce and then they're famous garlic yogurt sauce, as well as a jalapeño sauce And another spicy hot one that I would never try. When I got back to the jury room to eat my meal, I saw that there was a nice quantity of the fresh salad and the grilled vegetables but the meat was piled high! The employees were working efficiently and the place was spotless and orderly.

Since we were going to be in Hillcrest, we chose Khyber Pass - and wow, what an incredible decision. This was easily some of the best food I've had in a very long time. We started with the Bolani. Absolute perfection. It had a beautiful crunch, perfectly seasoned filling, and none of that sogginess I often run into with Bolani elsewhere. We could've ordered another plate and been thrilled. Next came the Aushak with ground beef: one of my all-time favorite Afghan dishes. Think of it like delicate leek-filled ravioli topped with savory meat and tangy yogurt. It hit all the right notes. We also shared the Kofta Kabob, served with grilled vegetables and fluffy basmati rice. The seasoning was spot on, and the meat was juicy and tender, similar to Persian koobideh, but truly memorable in its own way. Our server recommended the Afghan Yaghoot Chalao (Cherry Curry) with chicken. Yes, cherries! Sweet, sour, rich, bright. I had to resist the urge to literally lick my plate clean. And then: the Qabuli Palao with lamb. I do not like lamb. My friend loves it, so I agreed...and I'm so glad I did. I genuinely loved this dish. The saffron-coriander rice with carrots and raisins was aromatic and comforting, and the lamb was tender and flavorful. If you're hesitant about lamb, trust me, this dish might convert you. Portions were generous, we came hungry, and still left with leftovers. I also ordered the house-made Doogh, a mint yogurt drink. It's not for everyone, but it's pure comfort to me. We finished with hot tea infused with cardamom, black for me, green for my friend, and it was the perfect close to a perfect meal. I told our server that this food was even more delicious than what my mother makes. I'm Afghan born and raised in San Diego. That is not a compliment I give lightly. I believe the restaurant is under newer management since around 2020/2021. I last ate here in 2015, and even back when it was on Convoy in the late '90s, and this is the best it has ever been. I highly, highly recommend Khyber Pass to anyone: adventurous eaters, first-timers, comfort-food seekers, well everyone. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'm saving room for dessert.
