I love the office and staff. Jack can be a handful and they are amazing with him. They are the best!

Went to the vet clinic yesterday (because it was a holiday and hardly no one was open) and was confronted by Dr. Smith. We had 1 dog she wanted to put down 2 years ago and we said no. She put her on $125 heart meds, and she lived another 2 years. Then we had a dog they said was too fat for surgery and died from uterus collapse. We went to take an emergency dog on July 3rd with a dislocated jaw, and she refused to see the puppy. Came storming out and thru my review in my wife's face in front of a room full of customers. Said because I made a negative review about her, the clinic would not see our dogs. Shows she don't care about the animals. All the other vets here are great and it's a shame they have to be stuck with her. read more

have been a client for almost 30 years. We have had a lot of dogs and a few cats that Decatur Veterinary Clinic has treated, and seveal that they euthanized when necessary. In the past they were very responsive to our pets needs. They have a no appointment, first come first served wait in the parking lot scenario, policy that is acceptable when it is properly enforced The vets and assistants are knowledgeable. Thefront desk woman is the exception to the rule. If after a two or three gour wait and seeing several people and animals come and go while waiting for "our turn" we inquired about when our animal would be seen. The eesponse was, for us and another person waiting that they had emergencies being dealt with. I know feom past experience the desk employee has lost track of the waiting list when she admitted she thought we had left abd was not able to tell us what vehicle we were in, which is how they know which one to look for in the paeking lot. Horrible place, brought my dog in due to constipation issues. they Ran X-RAYS on him, first thing the vet said was to put my dog down and that he had cancer with a large mass in his stomach that can't be treated And she said it's inhumane of me to leave with him!Took him to lake worth got more scans and etc he didn't have any cancer what so ever! and that it's just a large syst That CAN be treated! Brought him to another place this morning they did the surgery and now he's recovering thank god I got a second opinion and didn't rely on this place!! No telling how many dogs she's done this to in the past. already reported her to there "upper management"! watch out folks wouldn't take ur pets here Hopefully they think about her employment! read more

That was amazing. She was able to identify that our dog may have EPI right away. I didn't have to waste tons of money first and sure enough she did have it. Dr. Lauren Smith is the best. She is very knowledgeable and up front about charges and recommended care. Sweet to my dog. I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else. Pricing is reasonable. We are lucky to have Dr. Smith and Decatur Veterinary for care. I highly recommend. read more

In my experience, this clinic aggressively recommends treatments, especially to pet owners who may not fully understand what's medically necessary. I'm sharing this to help others avoid similar frustration. The visit was for a specific concern: my dog developed a small hematoma (about the size of an olive) on the tip of her ear after a chair accident. My girlfriend clearly explained this when scheduling, expecting a simple drainage procedure. When she arrived, she thought they'd review exam results before proceeding. Instead, they performed the drainage immediately. This reminded me of a Yelp review by Haley G., who wrote, "They went ahead and did [treatment] without my permission." They also pushed for surgery, claiming it would prevent infection and "cauliflower ear." Given the hematoma's location (tip, not base of the ear), this didn't seem necessary. My girlfriend was also charged for a medication she believed was an antibiotic--but it was for pain and anxiety, which wasn't clearly explained. Considering the drainage was similar to a pin-prick and relieved the pain immediately, I believe the medication was unnecessary. We were charged $127 for a visit that seemed like it should've cost no more than $80. I wasn't present but ended up paying. When I reviewed the bill, I immediately noticed things that didn't add up. When I called to ask for clarification, the manager grew defensive and implied I was just trying to avoid paying. Later, I learned the owners had refused future service to my girlfriend, apparently because of my concerns. When I called to understand why, the owner immediately accused me of "harassing his employees" and threatened to involve local authorities if I contacted them again. read more

For a low cost first-come first-served animal clinic I give it 5 stars. As a vet clinic in general I'd say 4-4.5. The only reason for that being sometimes very long hold times on the phone, although that is understandable. We appreciate being able to have great care for our pets without going into serious debt. Worth the drive & wait if not an immediate life-threatening emergency. read more

This clinic does not accept appointments and is only walk-in. However, you are expected to wait in your car for 3-4 hours for them to call you after you register at counter. They then come and get your beloved pet and you are not allowed to go for visit with the doctor. Very, very odd setup. I was not comfortable at all and really aggravated at the 3-4. hour wait, which they don't tell you on the phone. Once they finally got my little dog and took her inside to the vet, it was then another hour. I was getting super anxious and nervous about the whole thing. Once done, they told me i could go to the waiting room (which is empty) and talk with vet over her diagnosis. She was nice enough and seemed informative. I will not be going back. I cannot possibly imaging waiting this long for every single visit. Definitely needs a better setup. read more

Very disappointed with Dr Smith. Obviously when I stood up to her and her attitude she decided that mu animals are no longer welcome in their clinic. Two weeks ago drove 60 miles round trip on Saturday morning to take my dog in to have his ears checked. He was shaking his head fairly violently and frequently. Decatur Veterinary Clinic is first come first served, they don't take appointments. So, I planned to arrive mid morning to miss the early morning rush. I knew they close at noon on Saturdays. I arrived at 10 minutes after 10:00am and the woman behind the desk said that they don't take anyone after 10:00am on Saturdays. I said I had driven 30 miles to get there and it's only 10 minutes after 10:00 am. She said that I could come back on Monday. As it turned out, I ended up having to take my dog to a 24hour emergency veterinary clinic on Sunday. Sure enough he had an ear infection. Because it was an emergency clinic it cost $175 to walk in the door, plus the cost of the checkup and the meds. So, $360 later plus the wasted time and gas to drive to Decatur Veterinary Clinic the day before, my dog had the care he needed. If Decatur Veterinary Clinic doesn't see anyone after 10:00am on Saturdays, it makes no sense to post on their website that they're open until noon, because for practical purposes they are not. For unclear hours of operation and being a zero tolerance stickler for their rules. They made the decision to lose a customer. They cost my dog unnecessary suffering and they cost me a lot more money and time that was also unnecessary. I have used Decatur Veterinary Clinic for three of my dogs and it had always been worth the long drive, but never again. I have several friends and family in the Decatur area, but I will never recommend this clinic again. read more

The clinic needs to educate the new front staff before they bring down the rating for this clinic. The clinic is always busy but they have been efficient overall in their process of taking in walk ins. Hopefully management reads the reviews on all their platforms. Been coming here for a while even back in the 90s when it was ran by someone else. Just want to say the woman who answered the phone needs her manners checked. On hold 15mins, I call back nicely informed I waited 15 min and she proceeded to hear my issue with my pup. After back and fort arguing about some runny poo in a puppy she tells me they want to check her ears again cause they were dirty.... not ever infected. Long story short don't be another money grabbing vet walk in clinic, address issues at hand not something that is unrelated which was stated by the vet. And for the love of God when u answer the phone apologize for making me call back after 15mins. Instead I was told there is only 2 and phones are crazy.... not my problem, hire more people preferably ones who respect their customers. We all work and have busy jobs not an excuse to be rude...... We have spent a lot of money here with our animals and everytime it gets worse and worse. read more

Had an emergency stop here on our way out of town with our two bulldogs. We didn't make it more than 30 minutes from the house before our bully was turning blue from anxiety. Well for my first visit here I can happily say I am not coming back. I Waited for 2hrs in my car and all I got was a bunch of attitude from the receptionist. Because of her attitude and her completely ignoring me I would not recommend this place. The ONLY thing I would have liked to be different is an appointment time. Animals are seen at a first come first serve basis, which is awesome, but a 3-hour vet visit is hard to plan or make time for. Luckily I was free for the day and it's even luckier I showed up at 7:45 am (15 mins before opening) or else it would have been much longer! Great staff, very good bedside manner. Gentle with my pet. VERY AFFORDABLE! My boy was diagnosed with a cold/upper respiratory infection and the exam plus all meds was only $85! Thanks Dr. Troppy and Sheila! read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. One time I had a emergency with my goat and had to take it in the evening and they accepted it right away with a reasonable price too which I was grateful for. However more than once when I've been at the front desk one worker looked at me as if she couldn't be bothered by me because I asked her a question about the sign in form. They even ignored me for a little while as I was standing there. read more

First, let me say, this is the best vet office I've ever been to. The vets and most of the staff at this clinic are great; very knowledgeable, helpful, and compassionate. Now, for the review - The woman who answers the phone and checks people in (receptionist I guess?) is kinda rude in a way that I don't THINK she's TRYING to be rude, but is. For example, if you ask a question - she expects you to understand a very short answer while she's using 'vet talk', and if you don't understand, she looks at you and makes you feel stupid for not knowing.. It's very intimidating and keeps you from asking other questions. It may just be her personality, but it's happened the last 2 visits. What makes this so important, other than people tend to not like having someone make them feel stupid, is that with the COVID-19 precautions being taken at the clinic, she's the main person you talk to when you sign in and tell them why you are there. I'm still wearing a mask and I have already had the vaccine, so I'm all for still taking precautions. However, the precautions they use are the strictest I've seen. You are only allowed inside, 1 person at a time, to check in and tell them why you're there; this is why the receptionist part is important. So you check in and then wait in your vehicle until someone comes out to take your pet. This is the best time to ask any questions you may have, as you don't get to go in with your pet for the visit. They take your pet, you wait in your vehicle. After they are done, they bring your pet and the bill back to you. I find this bothersome because I can't see what's going on; I can't ask questions or get any information that the vet's usually give you; I can't comfort my pet who doesn't know what's going on. All of that is important. So while I do think taking the COVID-19 precautions is a great thing, I think they should allow the pet's owner ( wearing a mask, hand sanitizer at the door, temp. check, etc. ) to be in the room for the exam/visit. Aside from the above, the only other problem that arises is that you can't make an appointment. It's 1st come, 1st serve. So you should always (even before COVID-19) expect to be there at LEAST 2 hours. Now for the positives of this clinic and the reasons I don't change to a different facility. The techs are nice and helpful and the vets (I've seen 2, a male and a female) are AMAZING. They take their time and really listen and address any concerns you have, which again, is why you should be there for the exam/visit. Also, I feel their prices are very fair. They don't try to charge you for every question or concern you have. The prices they have for usual vet services ( shots, spay/neuter, etc. ) are the best in Wise County. So if you can accept the negatives about this clinic, THE POSITIVES ARE WORTH IT!! read more

Five months ago I had a very pleasant experience with Dr. Harrison and his staff at this clinic. Yesterday, I had the worst experience with Lauren Smith that I've ever had with a veterinarian. Upon going in the front door of this clinic this morning to hand deliver a letter about my experience to Dr. Harrison, I found the following posted on the door: "Zero Tolerance (in large letters)" Swearing, threats or any act of violence will not be tolerated. Anyone giving verbal abuse to members of our staff will be asked to the (as typed on notice) leave premises and not return. We are here to help, not be hurt." Interesting that the last line reads, "We are here to help, not be hurt," suggesting that customers have hurt them, when, after my interaction with Lauren Smith, it was indeed me and my goat who were hurt by this unprofessional, rude, aggressive woman. In a town the size of Decatur and in a safe neighborhood, why is this notice necessary? The answer is that the rudeness, unprofessional conduct, defensiveness and judgmental accusations from this woman incites anger in customers, especially those with animals in distress. The notice should be internal, as that is where the problem is. Instead of putting my goat down in a timely and compassionate manner, she yelled accusations at me and was more interested in a confrontation than my suffering goat! I left with my dying goat - better to euthanize her myself quickly than deal with this shocking behavior. NOT a James Herriot veterinarian and NOT an experience I would wish on anyone else or their animal. read more

I'm not sure how the heck this vet only has one other review and it's poor. Yes. You have to wait. They don't take appointments. Yes it's NO frills. If you have a 15 yr old dog with cancer they aren't going to push you to have it sent out but they will remove it if possible (are you really going to put an old dog through chemo? Are you really going to do MAJOR surgery on a dog who has no chance of recovery? My dog swallowed an entire chicken leg WHOLE. They found it by accident in a 17$ X-ray. Any other vet would have said surgery. She was a very old rescue we'd only had a few months and she weighed 9 lbs. how she did it i have no idea. I freaked out. The vet said 80% chance it will dissolve and be gone in a week. Recheck and come back if any issues. We came back a week later. Bone gone. I brought my dog in with what 2 vets said was a lick granuloma and offered to remove it off her foot for 400$ plus over night fees. I went to Decatur because a friend who's a retired vet said it looked like cancer. Sure enough the vet took one look, did emergency surgery at 4pm. Kept her over night because she's 15. We did ask it be sent out so we knew what the margins looked like. Aggressive squamous cell carcinoma. Would have killed her. She's also had mammary cancer and any time they find new modules they remove them over night stay. Last time she had 3 and a teet taken and it was 125$. Now any doctor or vet can make a mistake on humans or animals. But they do a great job and are EXTREMELY affordable. In fact i was quoted 125$ plus labs to have my old rescue (the bone dog lol) have ONE tooth removed. It was a bit swollen and looked painful. She was abused and we got her as a mess of a dog. Lots of vetting needed. We declined and took the hr drive to Decatur. Under 20$ for an exam. They looked at the tooth and one tiny tug the whole tooth just came out. The dog didn't even flinch. Antibiotics were 18$. Under 40$ good as New. I've seen them be so compassionate with dying dogs. People bring them in their cars and suvs etc and the vets even go outside so the owner doesn't have to be a mess in the clinic and they can comfortably hold their baby while he goes to rainbow bridge. Then the vet will give them time to say good bye and come get the pet and set up burial or cremation. Yes sometimes the front desk could be a bit friendlier but they are crazy busy and not rude just business. The vets and handlers are sweet. We were so worried about the old "bone girl" as we knew she'd not live super long. She too I'd mammary cancer (by the way 30 tumors removed and it was under 200$). Some came back and she needed more dental work. Vet said her heart was very bad and they didn't want to remove tumors because it's slow growing and they gently said that they will if she's doing great during teeth (quality of life with the teeth was necessity) but didn't want her under anesthesia too long because. And they were gentle. Her heart was what was going to eventually kill her. They were right. About 6 months later she went into heart failure and couldn't lay down or sleep. Every ounce of effort was to breath. Lasix was a bandaid but she was suffering and we were happy we gave her three years of love after spending her whole life in a puppy mill never touching grass. Didn't even know how to bark. They were so kind and gentle. I'm disgusted with the previous reviewer. A lot of people i know from Keller take the hour drive and are happy to do so because of the affordability and the care given. Be prepared to wait 1-3 hours. There's people to chat with. It's not a root canal. It's enjoyable. I love Decatur vet and owe them the lives of my dogs and trust them with those i love so much. Thank you!!! read more

My dog is currently in the ER due to an anaphylactic reaction to the Proheart12 heartworm injection. I was given no warnings whatsoever from the Decatur veterinary staff that there were any risks involved with giving this injection. Additionally, they did not give me the Client Information Sheet, which would have informed me of the risks involved. Following the injection, my dog immediately started showing symptoms of a severe anaphylactic reaction. I took him to the local emergency veterinary clinic for further evaluation and treatment. After arriving at the emergency veterinary clinic, the Decatur clinic failed to forward the list of medication/vaccines given to my dog. Only after calling them directly the next day did I receive any documentation for the medications administered to my dog. After a 5 minute google search, I found the client data sheet for the Proheart12 heartworm injection, where the number 1 warning is that an anaphylactic reaction is likely and highly possible (different adverse symptoms were seen in over 25% of dogs in a study of 593 dogs with several dogs experiencing severe reactions of which some lead to death). This is straight negligence on the part of the Decatur veterinary clinic to fail to inform customers of the risks involved with the medicine they administer. They did have friendly staff, but overall need to seriously improve their veterinary practice. I will say that they haven't contacted me to charge me for anything. However, at the same time they have also failed to reach out once since taking my dog to the ER. read more

We drive over 30 minutes to come to this vet! We take all three of our dogs here. We recused two of our dogs from the shelter at 10 weeks old and they both had some problems that had me coming to this vet on a weekly basis but I always had a positive experience! They both ended up getting ear hematoma's and had to have surgery and we were quoted a price unbelievably lower than other vets in our area. And then a couple days ago our 4 year old pittie got attacked by another dog and he also had to have surgery. It was late at night and we wanted to take him to Creekside in Keller but we knew it would cost us an outrageous amount of money. So I waited until first thing in the morning and brought him to this vet and he was very well taken care of! The prices are unbeatable and all of the vets and techs are wonderful. Don't get me wrong, the wait can be long since they do not take appointments but there are always people to talk to! This is not a review of the entire practice just of Lauren Smith, DVM. Our rescue recently had a 9 yr. old blind foster basset seen at your clinic by Lauren Smith. The visit was to insure Rufus was healthy enough to make an 1100 mile journey to our rescue and to get needed vaccines. The visit left our foster mom in tears. She was told that no rescue would take a dog with an ear infection. That is absolutely not true. I personally have never had a basset foster that didn't have an ear infection. Rescues see this as a normal occurrence. Unfortunately it did not end there, Dr. Smith recommended Rufus be euthanized because he was blind and had no quality of life. Our foster was in tears over the lack of compassion Dr. Smith showed and I was furious! That was completely out of line. Rufus is a happy, loving boy and is enjoying his life at our rescue. His eyes cause him no pain in our vet's opinion and his ears are continuing to be treated. I would like to suggest that you do a little compassion training in your practice as well as educate you staff on rescue organizations. read more

my puppy tested positive for parvo last night at the emergency vet, so I brought him to Decatur this morning to have him hospitalized. I waited over an hour for them to even come out to talk to me even though I called 45 mins in advance to alert them that I was bringing a dog sick with parvo. THEN I was met with extreme attitude from a tech about the deposit even when I was just asking questions. I first told her I wasn't thrilled with them making a parvo case wait in a vehicle over an hour, thank god I had puppy pads with me, she said "welcome to decatur veterinary hospital" in a snarky tone as a reply to that. I then told her I didn't appreciate how I was being spoken to, and that I used to be a tech myself so I understand how things can be but there is never a reason to talk to a client like that. she said good, then leave! I wish I could give negative stars. I took a very sick puppy, not knowing what was wrong. I went in and begged them to take it back and on IV. They said they had to parvo test first and I had to wait in the car. I understand but pleaded with them to hurry as the puppy was dying in my arms. The girl at the front said they would. Over 30 minutes go by and no one comes. The puppy is suffering. I go in and beg again and they send me to a room finally. The parvo test comes back positive. With no emotion and a cold, empty look they say I need a $400 deposit for hospitalization and it could be anywhere from that to $1300. I'm okay with that but ask for medication for the rest of my puppies from her litter as they will inevitably get it and they refuse. I couldnt believe they would let my puppies suffer instead of sending home simple medication. I'm not talking about IVs, just antibiotics even. I left angry and called 3 other vets, 2 of which I never went to, and all said they had no problem giving medication and would prefer it as it's very contagious and would rather I treat at home if I can. read more

Regarding the review by Kaleb from San Francisco about his dogs reaction to the Heartworm shot. He should probably check to verify that our beloved Decatur Vet is the correct location, as to my knowledge our Decatur Vet does not administer the Heartworm shot.
