An incredible selection was shocking when walking in the door! They had a solid variety of bottles and even a few allocated bourbons. The location is just off Emory Campus, they are in a stand alone location across from a large grocery strip. Parking is directly in front. Don't let the cages on the windows and doors scare you off. Not sure I would be excited about late night shopping to be honest. I was immediately greeted when walking inside. The bourbon selection was killer! They also offered store picks. Prices were right on suggest retail prices which is rare these days. Loved the old school liquor store vibe. The clerk struck up a conversation and he was so cool. We talked bourbon for a while and he has the knowledge to help customers. I ended up walking out empty handed since I was in from out of town and flying I did not want the hassle. My fiancee introduced me to Decatur Package Store. When she and her friends were undergrads at Emory, this was their go-to package store for most of their alcoholic beverage needs (and if I recall correctly, it was mostly for wine and spirits; they were fancy college students). Add Decatur Package Store to the list of good package stores I've come across in metro Atlanta. I like this place. This store is located in North Decatur near the intersection of Clairemont Ave and N Decatur Rd. It's less than two miles and about five minutes away from Downtown Decatur. We were headed to Downtown Decatur and wanted to pick up a bottle of wine for a gift, so this store was conveniently-located for us. The folks that work here were friendly and eager to help. I usually like to ask for help when buying a bottle of wine because I'm not an expert, but we didn't need it this time. We let the "Herb's Choices" signs guide us. Herb is the owner (Herb Chereck) and he has recommendations all around the store. He includes detailed and helpful descriptions for his recommendations. We were looking for a value-priced red and ended up going with a 2014 Hook & Ladder Chalk Hill (Sonoma County) Cabernet Sauvignon for $24.99. Herb said it has a "rich aroma of lush, black cherry fruit" and the finish has "soft brambly fruit, ripe tannins and good length." What sold me was the bottom line: "This Cab has excellent fruit and excellent balance." Thank you, Herb. The store was packed to the gills with a diverse and wide array of alcoholic beverages. At the same time, it was really easy for us to find what we wanted. We were in and out in a matter of minutes. There's plenty of free parking. read more

This is a terrific liquor store! Great selection and super friendly staff. I was on a Bourbon Hunt searching for hard to find bottles. DPS had a wonderful selection of excellent bottles. The staff was the best I've encountered anywhere in a long time. They have a full selection of beer, wine and spirits. Just to start my review with some COVID-19 info (can't wait for this to be dated info): Right now I give them 5-stars because you can just go to the front door, tell them what you want, and they bring it to you and you pay. You never go in the store, and they have hand sanitizer where you pay. They also never touch your credit card, and you don't have to sign. Super minimal contact - love it! Normally, though, it's probably a 4 star place. Solid but not massive selection, and the people who work there are nice. The place itself also doesn't feel dodgy, which some liquor stores do, so I appreciate that. read more

You might mistake Decatur Package Store as a old-style, limited selection booze shop, unlike the better known outlets such as Green's, Tower or Toco Giant. If so, you'd be wrong. Sure, this place isn't huge but they have a big beer selection including a lot of Belgians and dozens of craft beers. Some beers you might not have seen elsewhere. I picked up a bottle of Saison Dupont - one of my faves - but this one is dry-hopped. I'd not seen that before. Plenty of other booze, too. On Mondays and Tuesdays, they offer a senior (60+) discount of 10% (cash or debit, 7% credit), which they gave me without my asking even though I'm only 59 3/4. :) Prices are on par with other stores. Just tried them for the first time and wanted to find a liquor store practicing safe contactless shopping. It was easy to maintain taped off 6' distance in line; staff all had masks and so did most/all customers; staff serve you at one of two doorways blocked by tables and they gather your order for you. I love this store. The staff is so helpful when looking for a certain type of wine and they have a large selection. They always have a good deal going on as well. The cold beer selection is large and they carry some brands that you do not see often. They sell tickets for the Decatur Wine and Beer Festivals. The last time I went, they suggested a whiskey for my husband. They were spot on when I told them his likes and dislikes. The only downside is that it is almost impossible sometimes to make a left out of the parking lot, but it is worth it. read more

It's bourbon hunting season. I popped in to check out their selection. DPS offers a respectable selection with some good store picks. I left without the Whistle Pig Rye pick of theirs, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't thought about it every day since. I had a nice conversation with the owner (presumably). This was my first experience of a very genuine local business of wine and other alcoholic beverages. I had no idea it existed right next to Emory clairmont campus until I yelped local liquor stores. Walking in, you can just see a huge selection of different drinks to offer ranging from hard dark to light liquor all the way to wine. It is beautifully organized and has a great selection, especially the wine! The local owner is Herb, an older gentleman who has a taste for his wines and selects them himself! Nearly every wine had its own description right next to it so you could literally imagine the taste as he readily depicted the various flavored that were emitted as he tasted them previously himself. I only wish I had his job. The prices range from very affordable to a fancy aged taste for those with a finer sense of the good life. Enjoy! read more

Washington state just recently passed a law allowing grocery stores to sell liquor and what do I do? Move to Atlanta... So, I came to this liquor store. It has a good selection of liquor and wine. Prices seem reasonable. I wouldn't recommend getting beer here (since there are better beer options nearby), but they have some good beers. I also picked up a really nice ginger beer. read more

Definitely a nice neighborhoody vibe at this package store. They carry delicious Fever Tree and Shrub & Co products, the latter formerly out of Decatur but sadly now out of Berkeley. The beer selection is dwarfed by places like Green's but there are some gems here and there. Stopped in here yesterday to grab some needed items for the home bar. They had everything I was looking for (Cachaca, half size bottle of Galliano, a new jigger, round ice cube tray). Some of the people who work here also work at local Decatur bars... The good bars. That being said, I like to come here and get advice about base spirits and liqueurs. Herb, who runs the wine part of the store is an unpretentious oenophile. That means he's easy to chat with and pretty knowledgable about the selection he's made available. The pricing is reasonable here, and the selection is reasonably good. Being a big fan of single malts, there's some price inflation here... and the selection of more exquisite liquors could be a bit more deep... but it's far from poor... which means it's a decent place to start a collection! The beer selection is not as deep either, with a smattering of good Belgians and domestics. It's more of a working man's selection of beer. For a beer snob, please proceed to Brickstore Pub. It doesn't look (from the outside or the inside) as fancy as some of the places I'm used to getting beer and booze from, but the selection here is good and they really know their stuff. I've come in shopping for whiskey (scotch, bourbon) and beer and have been quite happy. The prices seem pretty good, but I'm used to a different state - who knows how different taxes are here. I bought a bottle of Bourbon for about $10 less than I expected. I asked about sour beers - they had a large bottle of my favorite, and the 'beer guy' suggested a Gose to me after talking to me for a while about my tastes. This is a style I've never heard of before, but I'm really enjoying it. They have a small selection of plasticware, mixers, and glassware - everything you would need at the last minute. I heard about Herb's Wine Club and had to stop in at Decatur Package. (I'm hosting book club this month, and those ladies do love their wine!) The 6 bottles for $60 was a great value, an excellent way to serve quality wine without breaking the bank. A much better way to stick to a budget when entertaining than the alternative method of serving nothing that doesn't come in a box. Anyway, the store seemed very well stocked, and the lovely gentleman behind the counter was very friendly. He even offered to help me carry the box of wine out to my car and held the store's door open for me as I exited. Of course, the day I can't carry 6 bottles is the day I'll have to turn in my Honorary Wino Club Card, but I appreciated the thought. This is my favorite package store in the Atlanta area (that I've been to.) We don't even live in Decatur, but most of our friends do, so this is where we often go to pick up some libations on the way to a party or hang out sesh. It's small, the dudes are generally friendly, and the selection is well-curated and well-priced. They have items here that you can't seem to find many other places, including some cheaper but still decent bourbons and gins. I trust the wine selection here more than many other places, and the beers they stock are also great - the standards as well as more unique specialty beers and beers that I'm surprised are as hard to find in Atlanta/Decatur as they are (this is one of the few places I've found my hometown favorite, Anchor Steam!) We like this place so much that we'll even hop in the car to come here and grab something we've really got a hankering for, even if we're not headed for a hangout sesh in Decatur...because we usually aren't...we're not that popular.... read more

This place is another Decatur gem. The wine selection is really good. I don't drink alot of wine, but I've always found this spot very informative and affordable. The guy that helps run this place, Herb, is very knowledgeable about wine and they have some loyal customers. Liquor selection is good with a nice mix of the standards and a few small batch selections. Beer selection is par for the course here in Decatur. We have a very high standard thanks to places like the Brick Store and Thinking Man, and this place doesn't disappoint. Nice craft selections mixed with your normal beers and imports. Great liquor store. Cocktail enthusiast's dream. The prices are in line with any other place in town and they have a better selection. They have a whole section of specialty bitters and mixers and a large assortment of high quality liquor at reasonable prices. They even get their own Decatur Package Store special single barrels of Elijah Craig and Elmer T. Lee. The beer selection is large, but not mind blowing. They have plenty of selections to choose from, it just takes third seat to spirits and wine. The good news is any beer drinker (or snob) should be able to find something to make them very happy. Don't get me wrong, nothing to scoff at going on here (even a little), it just (kinda) pales in comparison to the liquor selection. They also have a bunch of wine. Wine snobbery was big for people that are a little older than me (i.e.could legally drink in the 90s) so I'll leave it at that. read more

Ugh. Perusing a reddit thread about finding nice bourbon in Atlanta, I saw a few folks saying this place is solid. It's Covid so I went online to order pickup and WOW was I surprised! What a great "selection"! Ordered three bottles and called to see when they might be ready for pickup. The guy looks at my order. And laughs. He laughs for a few seconds before saying he doesn't have one of the bottles. He laughs some more. That's OK, I say. Then he says he has none of the bottles and he laughs and laughs. Then he tells me the online system is in "beta" mode, which I take to mean it shouldn't be live. He's still effing chuckling. I say, "I'm glad I called" and am about to say bye, but he keeps giggling. He tries to explain it again but I get it. I'm ready to get off the phone. I have NO IDEA why it's funny I got my hopes up only to have them dashed by this hyena man. He keeps talking and laughing but I finally just hung up. Will never go back here! Ugh. read more

I like to support local businesses. I went in last Saturday night for some beer and hard cider. No one greeted me when I walked in. I went to the beer fridge to look for what I wanted. I looked around for a couple of minutes and no one offered to help me find anything. I decided to leave after not finding what I was looking for and no one spoke to me on my way out. Never thought a liquor store would be enough of a blip on my radar to write a review, but this one is. I went in right before Christmas to pick out a nice bourbon as a gift for a friend, and found that they had special batches from a GA distiller that were available only at Decatur Package Store. The bottles were signed and everything. The checkout clerks behind the counter were incredibly friendly. Keeping them in my rotation with H & F when shopping for booze gifts. read more

Score. I've driven by here a dozen times and always wanted to stop in, for I have a weird desire to check inventory at every package store in case I ever need something I can't find elsewhere. That, and I just love going into package stores, they're awesome. Recently a very limited edition beer was released and although I had my hooks in a few places to get me some, I wasn't fully secure they'd come through, so I took the time to email a few other local places to see about prepaying for a 4pk so I could ensure I got some. I sent mail to numerous places all around Atlanta and Herb from Decatur Package was the only one to respond at all, confirming he does care what customers have to say. For that he gets three stars off the bat. It says a lot about a place to answer emails, after all, why do they have an email address if they're not going to use it? He replied he was expecting some in, and even said he'd set a 4pk aside with my name on it. Super cool, I wouldn't expect that from even my local haunts, and that again says a lot about his willingness to do right by a customer. I sent my lady over to get it as I was tied up that day, she got back to me and said he was really nice and they had a good little stock, so I went by the next day to personally thank him. The store is small, but it's well stocked with a good variety of everything. The Scotch is limited, but there's something for every price point, every taste, even a few I don't regularly see anywhere else. Lots of wine, and the beer selection is well varied also, usually a place this size would just have your average Bud, Miller, etc. with a 6pk of Fat Tire, but Herb has a good variety of Belgian, German, and American craft brews. Prices are pretty average, the beers are a little higher, say .20-40 cents per big bottle, but they obviously don't buy in the same bulk as Green's or Tower, and for the convenience of being close it's not a hassle to pay a small amount more. The parking is pretty big for the area, so I don't think you'd ever have a problem getting in or out, and the whole place just felt a little cleaner than a few small places nearby. So now I have one more place to add to my rounds, and I'm glad. read more

This is my regular liquor store. They have an excellent selection of spirits, particularly bourbon, and they often have some special bottlings made just for the store. The wine selection is truly thoughtful, and you can find great wines at great prices. They also have a decent selection of barware and bitters. Prices are overall are fair. The location is a bit out of the way for me, and the building is quite nondescript. Don't let that deter you. This place is right up there with the top package stores in the city. read more

Zero pulse with the night staff, looking up wines on the 'computer', attitude, selection is sparce with name brands and random so so picks, but...good cigarette prices. They need some better wines and quit selling generic 6 packs of beer since they buy by the case then repackage in white cardboard. Been in the area for 30yrs and always give this place a chance one in a while. I typically leave with not much. Oh, prices are not competitive either for wines. Stock some good $10-18 bottles and you'll be in better shape. And teach tge staff some customer service skills. I want this place, and all other local biz, to stick around. read more
