While I am not usually one to leave reviews, the atrocity that is my newly tailored suit from DeCarlos Bespoke of Jersey City compelled me to leave a public critique. I first brought my brand new suit to DeCarlos Bespoke on March 29 of 2019 to be tailored at a cost of $188. I was informed that they were very busy and that the suit would take several weeks to complete. However, I found that it took longer than any suit I have had tailored before, receiving notification on May 14th that my suit was finally ready to be picked up. After a month and a half of waiting, I finally got to try on my new suit, which, to my dismay, did not fit me at all. The pants were way too large. When worn with a belt, the pants bunched around it appearing like I'm a teenager wearing my father's suit for a school dance. The tailor's comment was that I must have lost a lot of weight, which I had not. The horror show of a coat was cut similar to that of a womens pantsuit jacket. The sides of the jacket were pinched in and the bottom flared out, giving an hourglass shaped appearance. Disheartened and frustrated I proclaimed that there was no way I would wear this suit. They stated that they would fix the jacket, free of cost; however there was nothing they could do with the pants. So, foolishly, I entrusted them with my suit, once again. Having not heard anything from them for quite some time, I sent them an email on October 1st to inquire about my suit. Two days later they told me it was ready to be picked up. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by his assistant since he was not there. She had me try on the suit which to my revulsion was worse. As I was in a hurry, I was unable to discuss the situation past the fact that I was not happy with the outcome of my suit and that I would be taking it to another tailor to get it fixed. She offered to have me bring it back to correct it again, but how could I trust them after two failed attempts? My advice to anyone that is looking at this tailor, I suggest you also find a different tailor. read more

I had heard about a suit maker in Jersey City, but I didn't know anything about him or where he was located. I happened to be walking by DeCarlos old shop and realized it was him. I didn't need anything at the time, but kept it in mind. About a year later, I needed a suit for my best friend's wedding so I walked over and introduced myself. He was so chill and happy to help. The process couldn't have been better. He had beautiful fabrics and every step of the way was customized. DeCarlos was awesome and the suit he created was amazing! Full disclosure: I've been a customer of DeCarlos for 2+ years but have resisted leaving him a review mostly because I don't want you to discover him and add to the wait typical for his services. He is THAT kind of good. But the world of men's clothing would be a better place if there were more like him, so I'll leave a review. If you're new to the world of bespoke, it's worth doing some research in order to understand how it operates so you'll get the most of the experience. (Test: if you don't know what floating canvas is then go start there.) In the six years since I discovered the world of bespoke, I've used 5 different tailors and had 12 suits made for me. I can honestly say that the 2 suits and tuxedo that DeCarlos crafted are the best. I only wish I had found him earlier. First, fabrics: DC has a good curated selection of fabrics for your bespoke suit, although these might feel more curated than what's typical at a larger operation. Personally I think this is a good thing and you can tell that DC thought hard about each option before deciding to include it in his stock. He also has a talent for discovering fabrics that adjust their color depending on the light, which is not something I've typically come across in my experience. He also is able to order fabrics and has the standard of sample books, although my personal bias is to want to see the fabric in person given the investment expense that's typical of bespoke pricing. Second, style: DeCarlos suits have a cut that that is edgy and more urban than what you might find typically out there. I'm personally a big fan but my career isn't in finance or any place that might skew more conservative fashion-wise. If you're in that setting you should work with him in figuring out how to adjust his design instincts to your context. There are many options that you can adjust and tailor to your liking, from the cut of the label, to the rear flap, count of buttons on sleeves, placement of pockets, number of buttons, color of liner, etc. All this is to say that if you're someone who likes to tinker with these things than you will do very well in the experience. I'm a little more middle of road and even in that case DeCarlos is excellent at offering suggestions and improvements. Third, process: Bespoke is not something you can rush and so I'd highly advise that you plan well ahead especially if you have an event that requires his product. In my case I needed a tux for a black tie gala and gave DC about 9 weeks to complete, all during his busy wedding season. Ultimately the tux came out amazing and was delivered on schedule, but the stress of a deadline is really not something you want to encumber in the bespoke process. As other reviews may have noted, he gets busy and it can sometimes feel a little mysterious about the progress of work. Since then, I had another suit made but which I did not need for a specific event - this is really the position you want to be in when working with DeCarlos (or any bespoke provider). We went through between 3-5 fittings for a suit, which is exactly what bespoke is - iterative creativity. My main concern was getting the fit right and DC absolutely nailed it. If you're ready to do bespoke - and have the time, resources, and patience to invest - I cannot recommend DeCarlos enough. He literally has made the best-fitting clothing I've ever had in my life. read more

Not just one of the best tailors but also one of the most professional, kind, and engaging owners in Jersey City. DeCarlos is a pleasure to deal with in any day to day dealings. He is a man that is passionate about his work wether its a simple alteration, or a helping you craft your next suit. His assistant who is usually on hand is a treat to deal with as well (I apologize, but I can't recall her name). Now, I am in agreement with most others in that he is not the cheapest around and you could go somewhere else for a fraction of the price. That said I am also someone who subscribes to the saying "You get what you pay for". Why would I save some money if I don't know what the quality of the service will be. I went here a few years ago to have a dress altered. I needed it hemmed up about 2-3 inches, as well as a few nips and tucks around the torso area. It was a strapless dress so I needed it to be secure for whenever I needed to bend down. It was pretty expensive but he did a really fine job on it. Generally, I was okay with the cost because I was having this done on a bridesmaid's dress, and I didn't want it to get mutilated by someone I wasn't sure about. It fit perfectly and I was very comfortable in it during the wedding. I would go back again but only if it was for one of my nicer pieces or for an important occasion. I most likely wouldn't go in there to get my Gap jeans hemmed up. Good value for the quality of work. read more

I was getting married so I came to decarlos for the tailoring of my wedding tuxedo and dress shirt. The shop had a very old school 1920's vibe to it; everyone was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and warm. I couldn't have asked for a better tailor or a better place to go for the work. Everything was super simple, I came in decarlos measured me; took the tuxedo, asked for a time/date for when I needed the tux back. I got a call letting me know when the tuxedo was done and to pick it up whenever. To be honest it was more expensive than I thought, but the personalized service completely took me by surprise. When I picked up my tuxedo and dress shirt he ironed it and offered to press the dress shirt some more. He also tied my bowtie for me right before the wedding - so everything would be styled perfectly. I'm going to be coming back to decarlos soon. read more

Let me say that I'm barely able to afford "bespoke shirt," but its a world apart from buying even a nice "designer" label shirt at Century 21 (that doesn't quite work in all the places where your body does not follow a model form.) But cost. . ..oh cost. So if you can't afford it, don't ask . . . .(shirts that cost what you might pay for a suit at Century 21). I do however aspire to get a suit one day. Tailors are like jewelers and building contractors. You hire them as much for price as for skill and especially taste. DeCarlos has taste for miles and a great bedside manner. No complaints there. So - the work : My first interaction was his team's tailoring of a Duchamp suit I brought back from London purchased at a sample sale. It was a bit of a wait, but I didn't have a deadline and the fit was very clearly tailored to my body -- even to a casual observer. Kudos on that one. The wait was a bit troublesome, but the result very much made up given I wasn't in any rush. The second and third experiences are somewhat more complex. I won two bespoke shirts at the Snow Ball and the Van Vorst Arts Cathedral Arts auctions. Long story short - the shirts were perfectly tailored, but took some months. To his credit DeCarlos had alot of work that had time-sensitive pieces for weddings and whatnot, and he was responsive when I prodded him and his staff for updates. I will go back to him. And I will - as I have - be happy with the care he and his staff takes with this work. Total win. But don't be a rushed consumer. read more

This is definitely the place in town to go to if you want custom tailoring for your suits. He's not your typical dry cleaner tailor. I bought a discounted suit from Jos. A. Bank a while ago and DeCarlos did some professional work on it to make it look custom-made. After he did his job, the suit fit perfectly to my body. It wasn't too tight or too loose. I haven't had him make a custom suit for me yet, but I'm sure he'd do a fantastic job. DeCarlos as well as his staff are extremely friendly. They make you feel at home and are fun to converse with. The setup of the shop itself feels like something from a more classical and simpler era. I have two little problems however. Since DeCarlos does do very high quality work on your clothing, the price range for his services can be a little steep. While the quality of his tailoring is worth the price, some customers who don't want to break the bank may be drawn away by this and there's usually no wiggle room for the price. Also, since he is popular it does take him some time to finish working on your clothing. The minimum is usually 2 weeks and it may take slightly longer during busy periods. All in all however this is the spot in town you want to go to for your professional tailoring. read more

DeCarlos is excellent tailor with a fantastic sense of style. I am happy to have purchased a Monument Avenue Blue Suit from DeCalros Bespoke and some custom shirts. The Monument Avenue Blue Suit is my favorite suit. It looks good and fits better than my other suits. Though I do not need to wear suits every day for work, it is a go-to suit for client meetings and conferences where it is important to put my best foot forward. I have never owned a tailored before, and since I'm getting married in a month, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get one. I just picked up my suit today, (July 24th) keeping in mind I dropped this suit off back in April. I have had to go back a total of 3 times for them to get my pants altered correctly. They did a great job with my jacket and vest, and I knew my pants needed a lot of work, but I didn't think they would need sooooo much time. They did mention that this is the busy season...weddings and all, but I had to call on at least 2 occasions to make sure they had it ready. I did not get a curtsy call from them when my suit was ready. On my second visit they charged me an additional $15 for fixing the pants, because they had to re-hem the pants. Once DeCarlos found out what had happened, he refunded me the money and gave me a $25 credit. The design of the store is pretty cool and unique,very old school. The guys in there seemed like they meant business. All well dressed gentlemen working real hard on old school equipment. The first time I got my measurements taken; it was by one of the older gentlemen in the store. But after that, it was the ladies in the store taking the measurements. That was another thing that kinda of threw me for a loop was the ladies working in the store taking the measurements. With the fitting room right in front of everyone with a very sheer drape that didn't cover the whole door, it just seems like a little too much exposure and did not make me feel very comfortable. I don't know if it was just my bad experience or maybe some fluke, but I will not be returning there. I was disappointed because this place was very well rated, and the end result was great. But it was too much of a hassle and just an uncomfortable situation to deal with. With my personnel experience, I would advise you to have a couple of months to spare when bringing in clothes to be tailored. read more

The vibe here is so old school. It's really a treat to walk into their shop. It makes you feel like you've been transported to another era. The quality of their works is unparalled. You cannot get better tailoring anywhere that I've ever been in all of New Jersey. However, this shop is so very expensive. If you've got money, then this is the place to go. You will be very satisfied with the quality of their work. If you're not rich, though, you can find a nice acceptable work somewhere else for a fraction of the price. After my first experience with Decarlos and having bad experiences with other tailors I decided to spend the $$$ and give Decarlos a try. This time I came in expecting to spend $70 for him to take the waist in my double breasted sport coat. He is always friendly and warm. It took a little bit longer than anticipated. About 2 1/2 weeks then I gave him a call and he said it was done. It was a $40 JCP jacket that I bought on sale and Decarlos made it feel and look like a $1500 Bespoke jacket. Decarlos and Karen are the real deal. I hope I'll be in the position to get a bespoke suit here. But in the meantime, all my dress clothes come here. Their skill is beyond anything I've seen done by any other tailor, and they are very nice every time I interact with them. They take their time with every piece and have a lot of customers, so just plan for extra time if you need a particular piece for a special occasion. I agree with some other reviewers it doesn't make sense to bring, for example, a $250 Macy's suit here. But I've also realized it's better to own fewer high quality pieces that you care for properly and have Decarlos work on them. You CAN tell the difference. read more

Hands down the best tailor around!!! I've been a customer of DeCarlos for three years and couldn't be happier. Don't let the prices or timing ( 2 - 3 weeks for alterations) discourage you. Women's Clothing - DeCarlos is not just suits and shirts. He's done some phenomenal alterations with my wife's dresses, seriously, amazing work! 2. Fabric - Not all fabric can be altered. Despite not having an appointment he took me in anyway (Note to self, you NEED an appointment). His work is amazing, the fabrics are not your run of the mill items and his attention to detail is impeccable. I will be working with him on some other bespoke items in the near future. I feel like I'm the kind of person that tailors like because I don't have a body type that fits well in the shirts that one can buy retail. My shoulders are broad, my waist is skinny, and my arms are disproportionately lanky. DeCarlos is an amazing artist. After losing a good amount of excess weight I brought several suits in for alterations. DeCarlos refit them perfectly. I have also had simpler alterations done here and they were also perfect. You get what you pay for and your clothes will never fit better than after DeCarlos has altered them.
