Worst bus line ever. Nasty drivers. Always at least a half-hour late. I'd rather walk

It is becoming a nightmare waiting for the bus every morning, never on time and standing room only. Perhaps some buses are not running at all at times shown on the schedule online. Not cheap, almost same as taking the train. You would expect better service. read more

This morning almost all of the 33 Express and 66R buses were not running. This was not a planned service cancellation, but, starting early this morning, the twitter feed on their website started posting cancellations. After waiting an hour without a bus showing up, I called the dispatcher and was told "A lot of drivers called out this morning" So many that practically all service was cancelled? Literally, based on the twitter feed, on my busline alone, 3 of the 5 buses that should have been running were cancelled. That's just my line.And one of the 2 buses that actually were running became filled to capacity before getting to my stop, so couldn't take any more passengers. Many other cancellations were posted, too. By appearance, I would say many of the drivers called out in protest this morning. DeCamp, people are depending on this service, and paying a lot of money for it, in order to get to work. The least you could do is ensure that you are adequately staffed. During the time I've been using DeCamp, it seems like more than just an occasional problem that a scheduled bus just does not show up, particularly in the morning. Definitely going to be exploring new options for transportation. read more

I never complain about bus drivers; however, I was treated like a second class citizen on my commute yesterday. To boot, their website to log complaints doesn't even work, so I emailed multiple people within corporate and have not received a response. Yesterday, I had the absolute worst experience on bus #17115 - the #99 to NYC. The bus driver made me move to the back of the bus because she claimed my Airpods were too loud. I was not blasting music by any means, and anyone who knows about or owns Airpods knows that you can't even hear music coming from other people's. Meanwhile, a man two rows behind me was blasting metal music that everyone could hear the entirety of the long ride. The real issue came when we were in the Lincoln Tunnel, already having been incredibly delayed, and my boss called me to ask where I was - I answered and spoke to him for 30 seconds all while she was berating me over the loudspeaker of the bus. I was mortified. The driver could not have been more unprofessional or more rude. I am appalled at her behavior. Additionally, she drove the bus aggressively, beeped at everyone in bumper to bumper traffic and barely paid attention to the road. She also let us out before the zone that you're allowed to drop passengers. read more

On Monday, March 9th I took the 3:50, 88 bus from Port Authority New York. When I got to my stop just before Bay Ave in Bloomfield, another customer at the front of the bus came off and I was making my way up from the back of the bus since the bus was full. The driver pulled away from the stop and I had to shout several times for him to stop, which he did. However, he stopped so abruptly and forcefully that I was unable to hold on and fell forward hitting my right hip on the seat handle and landing on both knees. I got up but the driver had no considerable at all, he did not even ask if I was okay as I exited the bus. The moment I got home I called and spoke to a Mr. Balow from Decamp who said that he would write up the report and a supervisor would contact us back. However, to date their has been no follow up call from anyone and I have scars/bruises on both my right hip and knees, in addition to pain and swelling. Completely unacceptable and if my symptoms don't improve I will have to take further action ! read more

I have been living around the Montclair/Bloomfield area for over 10 years... and unfortunately I always had to commute with DeCamp. Until this day, it still boggles my mind that a company like this is still in business and never fails to mistreat their customers. I understand that having a monopoly on the service line gives them a certain "relaxation" and can be "loose" in their operations but I strongly believe the "culture" of this company is to torture their customers. Their service is at best unreliable, bus drivers are rude and does not even have a common courtesy to the riders, under/or not trained (talking on the phone while driving the bus ??? ) , their dispatchers does not have a clue about the status of their busses (just today, the bus was full to the brim due to the M. Luther King Jr. day, only after my call to the dispatcher she got informed that bus was not able to take any more passengers) . And I guess the owner of the company is so out of touch to even google reviews for his/her company. This company does not deserve to be in business, especially in this economy where there are better companies out there which operate with dignity. And basically Decamp should stop abusing their riders. I am looking forward to the day that I will NOT be using this archaic, unprofessional company anymore. Absolute A-holes. I called last night around 10pm (during the Hurricane Sandy disaster) to ask if they were running. They told me no because Port Authority was closed and REFUSED to give me names of any competitor lines to help me out (such as Suburban bus out of West Orange). I knew for a fact Port Authority was open as other busses were going into it. DeCamp told me it was not running. Anyway..fast forward to the next morning and DeCamp busses WERE running. The A-hole just didn't bother to check with his boss and told me incorrect information. read more

Yeah I don't know I just waited a full half hour for a bus to arrive. This is the time it was expected to be in NYC... This was my first time trying this line. The bus interior was nice, clean and air conditioned. My many people during the middle of the day, so I can't complain about the actual ride. read more

In the depth of winter they run late and make you freeze your socks off. They are consistently behind schedule and rude. They do not respond to feedback sent on the website or any form and make it sound like they, as employees, are the victims of the same broken system when you call them on the phone. The website schedules are not mobily optimized. The bus numbers are stupid and the lines at port authority are left to the customers to regulate. I have been on more than one of their buses that has broken down. One even filled with smoke. If you can find another means to commute, you are probably better off. It can get you to work, but on time and with your dignity is a different story. read more

Catch 33/88 from W Passiac around rush hour. The period 7-9 is just a write off to the city. Heading home, any bus from 4:40 to 6:35 is packed and likely standing, waiting 20 mins for the next one etc. It's just a miserable experience. Do not bother. Find another option. For the price, their service is terrible. Unfortunately they have a monopoly, so this isn't going to change soon. read more

Worst customer service. I've been riiding decamp from Montclair to NYC for 10 years now. Buses are ALWAYS late. The drivers are very rude. One time I only had a $20 when I boarded and the driver wanted me to exit the bus because he didn't have change even though I said that I would wait for other passengers to board and work with him to make out change. Ticket vendors at port authority consistently give me wrong info on gate info, making me miss my is more than once. I always take the train into the city as much as I can because of this horrible bus service. read more

I take the Decamp bus #32 from Nutley to NY and back on a daily basis. The service is flat out horrible. The drivers are always at least ten minutes late. Once you get used to that, they'll switch drivers on you and they'll actually get there on time. At that point you'll watch the bus drive by since you planned on getting there a few minutes late out of habit. Decamp is clearly understaffed. They have no service on the 32 line from 9:45am until 2:45pm. So if you leave work early, tough. If I get to Port Authority at 7:20pm and I miss the 7:15pm bus, tough; gotta wait till 8:15pm. And if I miss that one...10:15pm; as if I needed another incentive to leave work on time. I have waited for a bus for up to one hour due to "traffic". At this point, Decamp should expect some "traffic" and have a spare bus and driver to move up the rotation in case of "traffic" or an "accident". The day I moved to Nutley the Decamp workers went on strike. After that there was a fare increase. Then, due to high gas prices, there was another fare hike. And then there was another one to "keep up with rising costs". This was all within one year. Do yourself a favor and take the NJ Transit train, drive to the PATH in Harrison, or drive to Rt. 3 and take any bus from there. While Decamp is somewhat bearable if you just ignore the inconveniences, why do it to yourself? read more

Actually deserves ZERO stars. This bus company has the absolutely rudest drivers. When I have to go to New Jersey I sometimes have take this bus line unfortunately. Recently I had a driver (who was speeding) ignore the stop signal I pressed. I was already at the front of the bus standing there waiting for him to stop. He did so only after I asked him to, which by that point was about five blocks past my stop. The driver didn't even apologize. About a month ago a different driver opened the door of the bus while it was still rolling and never fully stopped. I had to jump off while it was still moving. Last year I was on an 11:00 pm 33 bus and there was only myself and a girl on board. The driver got to Lackawanna Plaza and said that we were at the last stop. I told him I had to go to Verona and the girl said she was going to Caldwell. The driver (an older white man with long white hair) just shrugged his shoulders and repeated (with an ugly attitude) that this was the last stop. I felt bad for the girl because she wasn't from the area and Lackawanna Plaza is not a safe place to be at midnight. I called DeCamp and complained to the dispatcher who said the driver shouldn't have done that. Well no shit Sherlock! Of course, the driver still works there. Numerous times I have seen drivers ignore customers when they ask about the route or need directions. They also cop an attitude when they have to make change when getting on the New York bound buses. Why does anyone have to tolerate this? This treatment is so unfair especially when having to pay the overpriced fare. The attitudes of these drivers is awful and they should learn some people skills. They have to deal with customers so customer service is part of their goddamned jobs. Also, sometimes at rush hour there are only two employees at the ticket counter and there is a line of about 60 customers waiting to buy tickets. It can take up to a half hour to buy a ticket! Get with the times and get ticket machines like New Jersey Transit. If you have to go to New Jersey take the train if possible. It is a million times better. If a DeCamp exec. reads this review (which I doubt because there are so many reviews about the rude drivers and it never changes) I hope your archaic company goes out of business. 10:30am Driver Unknown I normally don't do this but I feel the need to comment on a driver that I had this morning leaving Brookdale NJ heading to NYC. This driver was extremely rude and unprofessional as well as unpleasant. As I walked onto the bus I said good morning like I always do to the drivers and this driver reprimanded me as I got on the bus for having my ticket in my mouth and then handing it to him. The ticket was briefly between my lips not touching saliva tongue teeth or gums. He gave a horrified look and asked me, "why I would put a ticket in your mouth and then give it to me?" the tone of this was one of utter rudeness and embarrassment. I quickly apologized and as I did this I was trying to explain that my hands were full and I was adjusting as to not hold up the line. I So I would not hold up the bus line I quickly placed the ticket barely between my lips . Literally 5 seconds at the most as I walked into the bus then took it out (dry and not touched by my inner mouth) just my lips. I understand if this driver has issue with this action but i quickly apologized and tried to explain myself but he cut me off and rudely said what he said and told me to walk further into the bus. I said back to him that he cut me off and there is no need to be rude. He was hen said that he was not rude and move back! I even had plenty of other tickets I could have given him but he didn't give me a chance to say that. I'm in customer service and this type of behavior is uncalled for. This driver made me seem like I have a horrid disease and he embarrassed me for nothing more than saying good morning as I tried to hand him a ticket that was barely between my lips. Trust me, I realize that it is the holiday season and times are stressful, we all go through it- some more than others, but this is no way to treat a paying customer using your service... I'm absolutely upset, could not exit the bus fast enough and I really need resolution. He needs to understand that this is extremely poor customer service. This driver needs to take either a customer service class or anger management class or have some training to be able to decipher a disrespectful customer and a good honest patron. In addition I must mention that entering 495 he started driving aggressively honking his horn at cars next the him as if he was behind and needed to catch up and once we entered the city he was making gestures and aggressively honking his horn in traffic to get to the Port of Authority. . horrible uncomfortable trip read more

Just so everyone is aware - I commute from NYC to Montclair every thanksgiving day -- and i called this year (this will be the 7th) to make sure there would be extra buses from the Port (since it is ALWAYS a madhouse on thanksgiving day). I was just informed they are NOT running extra buses are just going to have the holiday schedule in place (1 bus per hour). This is not only INSANITY but it's just plain horrible management. Everyone planning on taking the bus home for the holiday please beware - most likely you'll be delayed for hours. This is really the most idiotic bus company EVER. read more

Took this bus to and from "the port" for years. I rode the 44 to and from Belleville. The drivers are mostly very salty dogs that don't have time for anyone who doesn't know exactly where they are going. As far as their punctuality is concerned leaving the port at rush hour my route left on time less than 25 % of the time. I would say on average 15-20 minutes late. The dispatchers basically chill and talk to the drivers. Even though they are in touch with the drivers and their base , just try to get an update on where your bus is -- not happening ! They have a monopoly on mass transportation from many of the suburbs to nyc and get a subsidy from the state. So we can bitch and moan all we want, but in the end they don't have to care so they don't. read more

We as customers of a bus line ask for 1 thing, that you be on time according to the schedule you have posted or printed. They come whenever so don't plan anything around them. If you have to be at work at a certain time, take the train or NJ Transit. Dispatch is ALWAYS rude, condescending, and will hang up on you if you call to ask about the busses not following the schedule. They don't care because they don't have to. They know they are the only means of transportation option in some cases, so they have become lazy, rude and have no aspirations to become a better company. The 66 is late leaving Port Authority on the weekend, especially on Sundays, at least 90-95% of the time. When calling dispatch the same answer is always given, "It's traffic in the tunnel." And when I say it runs late - not 10-15 minutes late - OVER 30 TO 50 MINUTES LATE. It comes just in time for the next bus that should arrive. Do not make plans in Jersey based on the time the bus should leave NY, you probably won't make it. Riders (especially those who have to stand) shouldn't have to pay when the bus arrives more than 15-20 minutes late, and that's with traffic in the tunnel. read more

I give it 1 star because the drivers are great; the dispatchers are another story. My complaints are regarding the # 44 bus from Bloomfield to NYC. 1: There is a woman who boards the 6:20 bus at the corner of Berkley & Franklin Aves. She STINKS!!! She does NOT bathe and her odor is offensive. I've complained to Decamp and they say that they can't do anything about it. This woman poses a health issue because she may have lice or bed bugs. Decamp doesn't clean the buses, so not only is this woman's funk in the seats if she has bugs, they're in there too. Decamp needs to address this situation - have someone from the company ride the bus with the rest of us a die from the funk. I pay the same amount of money to ride the bus as stinky and I deserve a smell free ride! 2: #44 is a local and it's really ridiculous that it takes over 1.5 hours to get to NYC from Bloomfield, The 44 should go express once it gets to Washington St in Belleville as North Arlington and Lyndhurst are also serviced by the #99 out of Kearney. Returning to Bloomfield at night is a crap shoot because the people living in North Arlington and Lyndhurst board the bus first, leaving the people who live beyond with no room to board. There have been times where I couldn't get on the 4:35 bus to stand and had to wait 1 hour for the next bus. UNFAIR. The #99 rolls in at 4:50 or 5:00 so the North Arlington & Lyndhurst clientele CAN use that bus. Make the 44 an EXPRESS bus going and coming - at least make the 6:20 and 4:35 buses express. 3: Decamp's unwillingness to listen to its riders is unacceptable and it Management is really out of touch. EVERYONE does NOT have a TWITTER account. If Decamp wants to be a part of the social media scene, it should establish a presence everywhere social media is used, They need a Facebook presence, it's not only about Twitter, it's about servicing its community. Horrible company. I contacted them for a quote for charter for my wedding and decided not to work with them. One week before my wedding an incredibly rude woman calls me saying that I have a booking with them. When I said that I did not she said that I did and then hung up on me. I repeatedly called back 5 times to which she would pick up h phone and hang up on me. I am shocked by how disrespectful someone who's only job qualification is to speak on the phone- could be when talking on the phone. I'm so glad I took my business to a more reputable company. read more

How can someone be so rude to someone calling to get a quote to use their company? I have never been treated like that. Now that I read these reviews I am glad they are sold out. My experience with Decamp is limited to once or twice a week (66) during non-rush hour times so it may differ from regular riders but I've rarely encountered any major problems. Drivers have been courteous, if the bus is late it's never been by more than a few minutes and the buses are always clean. Only negative is when the bus is sitting at the gate in the PABT for 10 minutes or more but no one can board. Why? read more

Hit or miss. Some drivers are very friendly, and some need an antidepressant. Leaving NJ it may be behind schedule. Leaving NYC is always on time. Pretty quiet on the bus. A very relaxed ride, and Port Authority is less hectic than Penn Station. I hate that the prices keep going up though. But that's life... read more

Terrible to say the least. I get this bus from And to the City from Montclair. Usually the drivers are nasty and impolite. The driver who usually drive the 7:15pm from NYC is one of the worse. He drives nervously, always too fast in the traffic, gets too close to cars, or change lane suddenly like he is driving a Maserati. He is extremely rude, I requested my bust stop as everybody does, and I repeated my request twice because he didn't answer, so I thought he didn't hear me. He humiliated me in front of the other passengers, treating me like a stupid. The only reason I was asking to stop a bit after the usual stop is that I have a back injury and it was badly hurting. Stopping a bit further would have allowed me to walk less. He screamed at me that I needed to calm down, I said I was calm and my tone was quite low since I was in pain. Of course I answered him back to fuck himself, I'm Sorry to be rude, but I was being kind, and In return I was treated like an animal and that's not right. Beside this is the second time I catch this driver, and he is always like this and a reckless driver. Decamp should really look into his behavior. read more

DeCamp stranded me in New Jersey last night. I checked their website and the holiday schedule had the last bus leaving my stop at 11:50. (The previous one was at 9 something.) I left a house around the corner at 11:30 so I was at the stop by 11:35. Around 12:30 an out-of-service bus stopped to tell us no one was coming. He was going back to a garage, but we could go with him to Union City and maybe we could catch a bus there. This was all the help he could offer. So my choices were to be stranded in Montclair at 12:30a.m. or be stranded in Union City an hour later. read more

Last night (11/16) at about 7pm I rode a #33 from NYC to NJ. Traffic all along route 3 was terribly backed up, but as I was overhearing the driver's radio, there was no conversation about the backup. When I got off the bus at Four Corners, I asked the driver about it, and he said "I don't know" -- that's it. NO! That's NOT it! The driver should have asked the dispatcher "Do you know what the delay is?", and the dispatcher should have said "I don't know" -- and THEN... "I'll FIND OUT". Then s/he should have gone to the Internet, listened to a radio or TV, etc., to FIND OUT. And THEN s/he should have told all the drivers what s/he FOUND OUT so the drivers can make informed, intelligent decisions as to how to get people home on time. This is called CUSTOMER SERVICE. Look into it! This is by NO means an isolated incident! DECAMP BUS LINE CLEANERS ARE THIEVES!!!! THEY STOLE MY BEATS HEADPHONES. I lost my beats headphone and my white shirt in a plastic bag on the bus. I was the last passenger to exit the bus. I called to the dispatcher right after I exit the bus. He told me the bus was heading to the garage and the cleaners is gonna find it for sure. I gave him my number and name to call me as soon as they get it. I called them the next morning and they said they didn't find anything. They told me to call them back after two days and I did. They told me they found the shirt but not the headphone. They headphone cost $200. This stupid,dishonest and disgusting bus cleaners took my headphone. SHAME ON YOU DECAMP BUS LINE! SHAME ON YOU DECAMP BUS LINE CLEANERS! I know you guys have lost and found office which is full of non worthy stuff. You guys keep worthy stuff like iPod, smart phones and expensive headphones and tell the customer you guys didn't find anything. Must agree with prior reviewer that the customer service at Decamp is horrendous. It's almost like they go out of their way to make it more difficult to use them. And it CAN BE a quick convenient trip to NYC (quick 25 minutes or so from Montclair to NYC), but don't count on it. Last week, my son and i were waiting for the Montclair to NYC line and a woman drove up and said "if you're waiting for the 66, i just saw it turn down another road. It's not coming." Demonstrating the exact opposite of a Decamp driver, she said "hop in and i'll take you to their next stop"... and unbelievably, we caught the bus. When boarding, I asked the driver why he skipped our stop and he said "the road after that stop is blocked, you should have know i couldn't make that stop". Of course, it was our fault. Should have guessed.. Just so you know, it wasn't the road that the bus stop was on that was blocked. He could easily have picked us up. The problem was further down his route. So of course we should know his route and make other arrangements. Why would i think this driver would make all his pickups and use the the vehicle he's driving to get around any detours? This company is the worse. Avoid if you can. At the least, have a plan B. read more
