I hate to give bad reviews but I feel it's important I leave this review. Anytime I try to reach dispatch they're rude and hang up on me even though all's I want is to speak to a supervisor or just get answers. The Bus 33M from Caldwell to NYC is an absolute mess. Both my wife and I take the bus to work everyday and contribute a lot of money to this bus company only to deal with the worst service ever. Waiting on line for 45 minutes and then having to stand should result in a free trip in my opinion or at least discount. This has been the situation for the past month or so. Everyday myself and others including pregnant women, elderly folks and handicap wait at the bus stop for 45 minutes watching busses go on by with no room only to eventually board a bus with standing room only. Anytime I call dispatch for answers why the busses are late they typically hang up on me. Anytime we ask the bus drivers they're nasty and tell us to call dispatch. I know the drivers don't make schedules or routes but we just want answers. It seems as if they need to add another bus to our route or maybe even two. I cannot understand how this company is still in business. Oh wait, MONOPOLY! They need some competition because it's literally a crisis for passengers who ride daily. They're never on time. The bus drivers are rude, sexist, pass you by all the time if you don't flag them down, yap all day while driving. Tickets are only sold at port authority-- stories upon stories I have that people wouldn't believe are true. The things I've seen and heard on the buses are insane but still forgivable if only they could be on time!!! Whoever wrote the review about improvements nailed it. They need to modernize and we need to be able to get real ETAs when buses run late. Tonight I waited 25 minutes in 19 degree weather. I literally think I have frost bite. A few days ago, I had to attend this deposition in Roseland, New Jersey. I had no clue where that was. After searching Google maps, I realized that the Decamp 66R route was the closest to my destination. The bus was scheduled to leave the Port Authority at 8:30 AM. It left right on time. It was clean and there weren't that many people on it. I got to my destination on time. After the deposition (which was as exciting as watching paint dry) ended, I headed back to the city. The bus arrived at the stop on time. The trip was fairly fast. Surprisingly, the Lincoln Tunnel wasn't congested. There are a few flaws. The stops aren't clearly identified and there's no timetable at the stops. And like other people said, there's no ticket vending machine. Customer support is awful. I've been riding occasionally for the past couple years when I can't get a ride to the train station. I have bought several tickets at a time at the Port Authority. Sometimes I won't ride the bus for a few months and the tickets expire. This has never been a problem until today, when my ticket was refused. I asked if a policy has changed and was told it was always that way, which it clearly wasn't. Now, I understand if they won't accept expired tickets. I'm not happy with customer support because I've been told in the past that expired tickets were fine. I called to inquire about getting a refund or exchanging tickets. The woman on the phone was rude, told me there was no one else I could speak to, wouldn't tell me another time I could call, and then straight hung up on me when I asked her name. So that's 70 dollars down the drain. Oh, and needless to say they are unreliable on all fronts. read more

I can only speak for the #33 round trip bus (Caldwell to NYPA line), which has been on time over the years, for the most part. One thing I've learned is that if it does ever arrive early at your stop, it will leave early, so it's best to show up early. Wow, that's a lot of 'earlry's.' The fares keep going up, but so does the cost to enter Lincoln Tunnel, so it's understandable. I can remember a year or two ago it was $6.00 each way from my stop and $12 to enter Lincoln but now it's $7.40 and $13, respectively. Final word of advice: bring exact change or else the bus driver might conveniently not have any to give you back (ie. The driver is pocketing the difference and you're getting hosed.) read more

I've taken this three times to Belleville from PA...and will do so perpetually. It leaves about 1 min early and gets me a block and a half away from my job. Driver is mostly rude, and surly at best. I've taken from Belleville to NY ONCE...and it was about 10 min late, and got there okay otherwise. Decamp is getting better. Over 7 years riding the 33 and 66 between Montclair and NYC, I have seen big improvements in their on-time performance and their terrific new bus fleet. Plus, the drivers are generally courteous and careful - they get maligned unfairly in social media. But there are a few more big things that Decamp as a company needs to do to join the modern era and justify both their expensive prices and their monopoly of the trans-Hudson commuter routes in much of Essex County. First, Decamp urgently needs to change the way its tickets are sold. You can only buy tickets in person, either at Port Authority or at a random selection of locations in Essex County. And you can't use a credit card for the purchase anywhere except Port Authority, forcing many riders to stand in long lines each month for no good reason. Instead, riders need to be able to buy single-ride, weekly/10-trip, or monthly/40-trip purchases anytime of day or night using a smartphone app, either thru the NJ Transit app or thru a specific one for Decamp. Drivers should have a way to scan them on your phone. And paper tickets and passes should be widely available in supermarkets and other locations in Essex County, and all locations must be required to accept credit cards for these purchases as a condition of participation, including pre-tax commuter-plan credit cards. Second, once Decamp works that out, they need to start working on bringing their antiquated dispatch system into the 21st century. Buses need satellite location transmitters that will pinpoint their locations on a map overlay, so the dispatcher can easily see their location and won't need to be constantly callidrivers to ask where they are. (And riders won't have to listen to those dispatch calls at top volume during rides, which is intrusive and prevents napping etc.) Once this sytem is in place, the app should be upgraded to provide ETAs for riders. This will be much more helpful than the current Twitter feed, which is a nice first step but not really all that useful in practice. These are the sorts of improvements that public transit systems all over the US and the world, including NJ Transit, have been making for years. If Decamp is going to continue monopolizing the local NYC commuter routes, charging high prices, and displacing NJ Transit, then it owes it to its riders to make these improvements and continur the positive trend it has been on. By contrast, if it does not make these changes, then I believe Decamp will have outlived its usefulness as a public transportation provider and its contract to run these commuter routes should then be revoked. But I think they deserve credit for the improvements made in recent years. As a locally owned small business, they should be given a chance to show us what they can do. Not too long, but long enough to start making the transition to the 21st century. read more

I would give DeCamp no stars if it were an option. Once again, I was out on the corner by 9:20 PM for the schedule time of 9:25 PM for the 66 bus to NYC scheduled for 9:25PM (at a stop 1/2 mile before mine). Still waiting at 9:40 PM I called the dispatcher. He told me the bus was coming down Harrison Ave from NYC and would turn around and be back heading towards NYC in 10 minutes. 20 minutes later still no bus, called again, this time told the 9:25 bus was already in Secaucus and must have come early (at least 10 minutes early since I was out waiting). The next bus would be 10:25. 10:35 no bus! Dispatcher could only say it was on its way. This is the 4th time this year an evening bus back to NYC hasn't shown up. There is not Customer Service after 5 PM. The dispatchers don't know anything. The company sucks! read more

Ughhh. Almost seems unnecessary to post as there are already so many bad reviews for DeCamp. I mean, clearly they don't seem to care what customers think. But I'm frustrated so I'll post anyway. I'm accustomed to the rudeness. I expect it. However, their online schedule is out of date. Some of the drivers will choose, at their discretion, to make stops or not, but they won't tell you in advance. I was dropped off on the side of the road on Monday after he completely skipped my stop. No apologies. Dispatcher was nasty and impatient when I called to ask if this would be a problem for the next day. Today the driver rolled right past me and I had to chase him down screaming to stop. I have had Saturday evening dinner reservations canceled more than once because of their lack of respect for people's time. I just had the most appalling experience on a Decamp bus in Montclair NJ. Firstly, I want to say that the bus driver was awesome. I'm writing this negative review because of the difficulty he had helping a wheelchair passenger onto the bus because of the negligence of the company. Basically, there were black strips glued to the floor that blocked the movable wheelchair seats from being able to push forward. The driver struggled to get the straps off the floor to push the seat forward and finally succeeded after much labor. This type of negligence is unacceptable. I don't care about my late ride as much as I care about the lack of consideration by the company to ensure that disabled passengers can embark their bus's with ease. Please take note, Decamp. This is appalling! The last time I took this bus, the driver nearly ran over a woman and then yelled at the passenger because she (the driver) got scared. The poor passenger nearly lost her life and the bus driver had the gall to give the woman a hard time when she came on the bus. This was definitely disturbing and I meant to write a review at the time. In addition (for the reader), I've found that their bus schedules are suggested times rather than real times. Ive taken the bus from Montclair to NYC on a number of occasions, and the bus has never been less than 15 minutes late. Today it was 40 minutes late. Been thinking of adding this negative review for a while now or simply just let it pass. This is in line with the Bus Driver for Bus#33 after 8am, from Caldwell to NY who would not even stop in the designated bus stops. Aside from being a slow driver (drives less than 25mph) in Broad, he would always open the door and let the passengers walk into the the bus while in the middle of the street - which is dangerous! I would love to know what it is that keeps the majority of these drivers so angry and insolent. I have had friends of mine from out of town, on more than one occasion arrive in tears having been shouted at for not knowing the intricacies of whatever whim the driver deems important, exact change, where to stand, how to wave down a bus etc etc. Dont get me wrong, the consistency of the busses is excellent. I am 70% more likely to be on time than my train riding coworkers, but man oh man, to be treated less than cattle (respect to cows and sheep) on a rattling old bus with broken seats as we careen and jolt through the burbs sure does put a damper on one's day. Oh DeCamp, how you disappoint me. Let me count the ways: 1. You're the only bus I know that actually costs more than a train traveling the same route. 2. You don't allow any food or drink on the bus, even if I'm hung over. 3. You drive right by one of the few major stops on your route because you "didn't see me there," causing me to dive back into my grandfather's car and chase you recklessly down the street, jump out at a red light and bang on your door until you let me on. 4. You leave me out in the rain waiting for your bus, which is an hour late because of "um, traffic." 5. At the time your bus is an hour late, you don't have anyone in your office to pick up the phone and explain why your bus is an hour late, or if it will ever come again, or if I'll just be left to die at the bus stop. There are an infinite number of numbers, so why does DeCamp have two #33 bus routes? I waited in line for fifteen minutes then boarded the #33 to Glen Ridge to be told by the driver--somewhat rudely--that I'm on the wrong #33--the other #33 goes to Glen Ridge, this one does not. And while I had been waiting for the wrong #33 the right #33 had departed so I had to wait another 33 minutes (acutal duration slightly embilished). Why, for the love of Pythagoras, can DeCamp not assign each bus route a unique number? Wow! The reviews of this bus company are harsh. I have a few points to enlighten those that may be completely deterred. Firstly, I really like my morning driver (a very nice tattooed veteran) and I love Sal, my evening driver. Though I agree that some of the drivers are rude and unaccommodating, I also think that some of the PASSENGERS are equally horrible. I have only been on one - yes ONE - bus where the no cell phone/no eating policies were enforced, and I was GRATEFUL! Honestly, I don't need to hear about how your daughter-in-law wants a Cartier watch presented to her on her 30th birthday at Per Se, while you chow down on a smelly egg, fish and onion sandwich. I lived in a city for 5 years and I think that a large number of suburbanites have a sense of entitlement that should not be accepted nor pacified. Just the other day I was on the Montclair bound 66 when an older gentleman started screaming because his reading light wasn't working. Seriously! He distracted the driver while in the tunnel because he was yelling about a non-functioning light ! He finally moved to a seat with a working light, only to fall asleep 2 minutes later as we exited the tunnel. Another important thing to consider is the other commuting option - NJ Transit. Before taking the bus to the city, I relied on NJ Transit , which was constantly delayed because of various reasons -"electrical" problems at Penn, forest fires, rain, snow, pygmies on the track, good weather, rainbows and butterflies. Because of NJ Transit I have been over 2 hours late for work. It was not unusual to be diverted to Hoboken. For many brief moments, I would blink, realize I was on the Path and hate my life. I may be late, the driver could be rude and the bus might pass me by, but at least I know I won't end up in Hoboken tomorrow morning. read more

I'm not home in New Jersey very often now, but I have been riding this bus since I moved to Montclair 17 years ago. While I was too young to remember the first times I took this bus, I do remember some very pleasant, friendly, and social drivers. I will never forget Sal and his ducks and the bus being a spaceship. Today, the bus line has gotten worse than ever. My mom takes this bus every day to work in NYC and back. She's sick and tired of it, and she would take the train, but Penn Station is too crowded and she has a problem with stairs. DeCamp has some of the rudest, most unfriendly and unhelpful drivers around. They take buses off with no notification. The dispatcher at the Port Authority is not very nice himself, and the company pays no regard to the grievances of passengers. I don't care what their policies are, they have no right to be this unkind to paying customers. The train is often less expensive, the majority of conductors are friendly and sociable, and you can at least talk on your cell phone softly. I've always said that NJ Transit Bus Operations needs to take over this ridiculous and dysfunctional bus line. read more

Really the only plus to DeCamp is that if you're looking to get to Montclair and beyond, it's quite fast from Port Authority. Compare with a NJ Transit train that is twice as long (and doesn't run on weekends!). However, AVOID the return trip during rush hour and take the train instead. You will be trapped in the Lincoln Tunnel line for up to two hours. There is no bathroom on board. While rude drivers who careen down Route 3 like it's the autobahn is a given with DeCamp (though I have to admit, a couple of them were downright pleasant), what is INEXCUSABLE is when they don't heed their own schedule and leave riders stranded... I can't remember how many times I would encounter at least a dozen commuter faculty, staff and students at the MSU bus stop, waiting in freezing weather for a bus that was 20 min. late (not an unusual occurrence, and a few said they arrived 15 minutes before scheduled departure)... when irate riders phoned dispatch to inquire how much longer, it was revealed the bus was already at Port Authority, and must have left the school 20 min. early! The scramble to catch the next train suddenly adds another hour to the evening... read more

Visiting from out of town. Got on the right bus from the Port Authority, which was a major endeavor. Asked the driver to please tell me when we reached a certain cross street in Montclair. It wasn't until we were in Montclair and I again asked him, "How far to this cross street?" I was told, we'd past it and I needed to walk back. 17 degrees, on feet that had hiked Manhattan all day, 1.7 miles. This is a great way to treat visitors to our town. read more

In a month or so, I will be moving and will not have to ride DeCamp buses every day. HALLELUJAH. The service is terrible. Buses are often late without explanation, and Saturday is the worst. Unfortunately I work Saturdays and I have learned not to rush for the 6:30 pm bus because it usually arrives somewhere between 6:45 and 7:30. There is NO dispatcher on duty so you stand and stand.....and wait and wait....for 20 minutes to an hour, and the excuse, if you bother to get one, is always, "traffic". I commuted daily on DeCamp for 19 years...We are talkin thousands of rides! In fairness, it worked. For the most part they did what was expected meaning they got you back and forth to/from NYC. That said, the drivers are by and large somewhere between automatons and downright angry. Very rarely did I encounter a friendly courteous driver. Certainly there were exceptions over the years but the overwhelming majority of their drivers are angry. Too bad, as the user experience could easily be fixed. I've always had a good experience on Decamp. It leaves ON TIME from Penn Station, but picking up in NJ can be a wait. Makes sense, since there are always people fiddling for tickets or taking their time or needing the bottom opened. But I understand why some people are pissed about waiting for longer periods...ten minutes is not bad. 30 minutes - not good! I've been lucky to have the pleasant drivers, I guess. And the riders are usually in pretty good moods too. It's quiet - mainly because talking on a cell is discouraged. And it's always been clean when I've ridden on the bus. I have this impression that when new buses were introduced this year, that bus service will start to get better. Today, October 19, 2017, took the 4:35 PM, little that I know will be my worst ride in many years commuting. Bus no. 17090 has no air conditioning. There was no warning announced when we passengers step into the bus at Port Authority. My whole ride to my home in Bloomfield was pure hell. The driver didn't care less, totally no apologies, no consideration, oblivious to the passengers' muted complaint and exasperation. The trip was exacerbated by a 1-hour traffic due to a bus fire on 495. IF I HAVE A CHOICE I WILL NEVER RIDE DECAMP BUS AGAIN. read more

If you can help it, at all, do not have decamp as your single method of commuting to work. Especially the 32. It doesn't run on weekends, including the holiday "weekend" schedule. Sometimes, it just doesn't show up. When it does run, it's usually off schedule, except for the driver who will show up on time, out of the blue - so everyone misses the bus. Just sent the following directly to DeCamp: I just stood at West Passaic and Day St, waiting for a bus that wasn't standing room only, for nearly an hour. There were a total of 17 people on the line when we were finally picked up at 8:15am. Your driver, who I had a pretty bad experience with last week due to his awful attitude, let some of us on the bus, but left a handful (probably 7-8) of people on the sidewalk. There are currently 4 empty seats on this bus and he is flying to NYC without having filled the bus to capacity like he should've. This is absolutely unacceptable. The vast majority of us are going to work. Not the circus. We pay too much for this service to be treated disrespectfully and like clowns. "Dear NJ Transit , If you are reading this, for the love of all that's holy, PLEASE retake the bus routes covered by Decamp in West Caldwell and Montclair IMMEDIATELY and end our suffering...PLEASE!!!" I completely agree with every negative review below as to the terrible service Decamp provides. For over 6 years, I've seen Decamp's level of service go from bad to worse, and then to atrocious, where it's been for many years now. Just last week, one of their drivers got off the wrong exit on I-280 and blamed all of the passengers for his mistake! It was one of those moments when you truly questioned if a person, in this case the bus driver, was insane or suffering some sort of delusional episode. The 33 "Express" from West Caldwell to NYC is late every single morning, no exaggeration. No matter what time you try to catch this bus in the morning, it is always late, at least 10 minutes minimum. When it does arrive, there are almost never any seats. Taking this same route back from NYC at night is not much better. Although you are most likely to get a seat on one of the few buses they run at night, the buses never arrive on time, being late anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes late every single night, even in the summer, during holidays, etc. Other buses from every other bus company are coming and going timely but not Decamp, they're always late, with nearly all of the drivers who are rude, argumentative and act like they'd rather be standing in front of a firing squad than drive a bus or interact with people. Decamp provides terrible service and needs to be replaced as the transit provider in the Northern NJ area. My only hope is that NJ Transit will replace Decamp with NJ Transit Buses as they do a very good job. Anything would be an improvement over Decamp and its miserable service. read more

The good: DeCamp is much more civilized than NJTransit. Your fellow commuters properly queue to get on the bus and are very respectful and courteous. There is no chaotic mad dash and trampling that goes on in Penn Station when the gate is posted. There is no eating, drinking or talking on the bus so there is no need to deal with unruly passengers. Also, cost. I'm able to easily walk to a bus stop. If you factor the price of a bus ticket vs. the cost of driving, parking and taking the train, the bus is cheaper. (If your lucky enough to live within walking distance to the train, than the train is definitely cheaper and faster.) The Bad: Bus announcements. The only way to find out if the bus is on time or even in service is by joining their Twitter feed. Which isn't very effective when they post that your bus isn't in service five minutes before it's suppose to arrive and your left standing in the cold until the next one (hopefully) 30 minutes later. Also, maintenance. Every once is awhile I get that one bus seat with the chairback that doesn't stay up, it just keeps falling back into a reclined position. The Ugly: Commute time. Allocate 2+ hours on the bus alone. What's the point of having only one designated bus lane, having all the buses from the entire state of NJ merge into that lane, building up traffic and extending the commute time? read more

Highly disappointed with this company. I had a second bus ticket to go back to New York City and the scheduled bus did not arrive. I waited over an hour for the following one at 10:44 and it was late and didn't stop for me, even though I waved at it. Then I had to walk over to the NJ transit train and spend more money on another ticket, to get back to Manhattan. I would suggest a talk to your employees about being on time and stopping for paying customers. On top of that they only hire rude drivers with one exception which if I knew his name I would totally give him 10 stars. He is the "Happy Friday" driver who you can tell has pride in his work ethic. He is always giving dispatch and other drivers updates on the traffic via the radio. But he is just the exception!!! This company is by far the worst private bus line ever!! They will not load a bus at Port Authority until maybe 4 mins before the departure time which is the least common sense rationale to do anything. First of all how do you expect to load 57 passengers in 4 mins and still leave on time? Who is running the scheduling? If anyone operating this bus services cares to read this, please make some changes!!!!! Employ more buses, have a committee deciding on how to improve ur customer service, bus schedule, employ smaller buses if it would save ur budget, hire competent drivers, analyze ur customer support. For the price u charge u could do way better! Buses are constantly late or don't show up at all. For $7 I have to stand if I come just 5 min off bus departure. .. this is so frustrating especially when one can compare with other bus companies.. Worst bus service I've ever experienced. Customer service is rude and mean. Only reason I use them is because they're the only bus to Montclair. If I could give less then 1 star I would read more
