I wish there was a zero star option for this horrible place. I almost never go to the Braintree Mall, but I was there last year shopping in real stores and happened to see rabbits. I always knew the place was a puppy mill horror store, but I didn't know they sold rabbits as well. As someone who has had three rescued rabbits and who knows how overwhelmed the local rabbit rescues are, I am absolutely appalled. I'm sure quite a few of the cute bunnies I saw there ended up in rescue or something way worse. I Googled them and I guess they are quite infamous. Stay. Away. Even you, mall mom, take your kids to volunteer at a rescue for the day instead, plenty of cute and furry there. read more

I really wish someone can close these stores down! every now and then i would walk in and take a look to see if they have improved anythings. NOT! dogs look sick, no energy and buried in their own Poo....place smells. u can smell it 10ft b4 u walk to the entrance. I don't know why SSP dont tell them to clean up. Please dint support them by buying their pets or supplies. But what worries me is, if no one buys them do they put them to sleep? I run a breed rescue group for American Eskimo Dogs, and Miniature Pinschers, and Debbie's Pet Land has been a barnacle in my behind for over a decade. The arguments against Pet Shops and the forgone conclusion that they acquire puppies from unsavory Puppy Mills are now common knowledge. All of the shock and horror aside, the reason that Debbie's is utterly awful and ethically challenged, is that they will finance any mope for dog ownership -- and the "teenagers" that work there are most certainly not knowledgable. This creates the impulse purchase mentality that is directly responsible for the huge numbers of dogs in rescue -- the secondary market for ex-puppies. I have lost count of the numbers of American Eskimos that we have taken from Debbie's customers -- none of these folks whom we would have approved for adoption. There are times in one's life when owning a puppy is questionable...teenagers, college students living in dorms, disabled seniors, pregnant families, all have life priorities that preclude them from focusing on the training of a puppy. And yet, they have all been financed to the tune of $1,500 to purchase an American Eskimo dog...and all have dumped their dogs with us within two years. Just a few examples.... The tide is slowly turning agains Pet Shops who sell dogs -- Debbies is a perfectly fine establishment for pet supplies, and in this anti-puppy mill climate, they had better stop selling puppies, or run the risk of being targeted by legal action as well as widespread protest -- as is occuring in Pennsylvania.. read more

I can only speak to my experiences of visiting frequently with a tot who is obsessed with anything that has legs and stands under 2' high. I suppose this makes me the Michael Vick of mothers, but yeah, I take my kid to the pet shop to play with the pups. The staff here are knowledgable and accommodating and the shop in itself seems pretty clean, well-stocked with toys of all kinds. Yes, I do think it is wack to keep animals caged in spaces that are the size of Cheez-It boxes, and no I wouldn't purchase an animal from this or any pet shop as I believe in the ARL. Until the day comes when we add a Fido to our family, though, I will continue to visit the pups in prison, knowing I am probably a walking hypocrisy that is yet to reconcile for all the sins I will commit in a shopping mall. read more

DON'T BUY FROM DEBBIE'S PET LAND!!! They get their dogs from puppymills, not breeders as they say. My friend got two dogs from Debbie's that were both infectiously sick and caused sickness with other animals. Debbie's vets lied about the health care ... when the vet was finally threatened by my friend of a lawsuit, Debbie backed down and offered to pay for free dog health care, but the dogs were chronically sick and in pain. It also confirms that Debbie's uses disreputable vets. They are cashing in on high profits by selling puppy mill dogs! Stay away!!! read more

I was so happy to walk in the mall last week and see that this hell hole is closed!!! I am a strong advocate for animal rescue, adoption, and responsible breeding and Debby's Pet Land is horrible. Working in the animal care industry I have seen so many dogs that were bought at Debby's surrendered to shelters, often with medical and behavioral issues. To know that there is one less place where people can impulsively buy a pet is so relieving. Anyone thinking of buying a pet from a petstore remember a few things: 1) the cost will be higher than adopting. The cost you pay to buy, the cost you pay for regular vet care, and the likely cost of sick visits 2) By purchasing a pet, supplies, anything from a store like Debby's you are supporting puppy mills. 3) There are so many pets that need homes, why not save one of those. 4) A pet is a LIFELONG commitment and should not be bought on a whim at the mall! As a frequent visitor to Debby's Petland in Braintree, I have encountered nothing but exceptional service from the knowledgable sales staff, puppies who are well fed, healthy and cared for, and a great atmosphere for my kids! I have purchased four dogs from Debby's, a maltese, a yorkie, a shih tzu and a lhasa apso. They all came with legitimate paperwork, contact information for the breeders, and warranties that I wouldn't have been able to find, had I purchased from a breeder directly or adopted. In my opinion, puppy mills are just something that happens in this country. The puppies at Debby's are all certifiably well bred and the employees seem to care more about the well being of the dogs than being pushy salespeople, which I have seen at other pet stores. Every time I bought a dog at Debby's I had no intention of buying a dog, and I spent at least an hour spending time with the dog in the petting rooms and talking to the girls that were there. The workers are friendly, helpful and love the dogs. They were willing to sit with me, go over every aspect of the dogs paperwork and answer any questions I had. I did ask about what happens to unsold dogs,and while the popular belief is that they are put down, they actually keep all the dogs until they are sold. If they are not sold, they are offered to employees for free. It is unfortunate that everyone seems to be incredibly misinformed about Debbys.They provide a great service. read more

DEBBIE PET- SAUGUS MA I'm one of the guilty customer that bought from Debbie Pet in Saugus. I bought a Bichon/Poodle. He was four month old and being cagged for that long, he was fearfull of large area.It took months of training before he felt save. I went to Debby 's last week.They kept to large breed dogs in the same cage.The floor might be clean but there eyes weren't.I had even told a worker there a dog looked sick,but they did not even check it.I beleive alot of them are sick.This is true neglect. read more

After a couple of very favorable experiences with Debby's (the one in Hyannis and the one in Dedham), I was shocked at the condition on the puppies in Braintree. My friend and I went there specifically to see a specific pup. When we got there we found the dog we drove to see (along with most of the others) looking a bit messy. When the girl handed us the pup to socialize with I almost gagged....the smell was horrible. The poor little thing. I felt terrible but I couldn't help the poor thing. I just couldn't bring her home not knowing why she was in such poor condition (I hae a dog at home already and didn't want to put her at any risk). Like I said ....I have had good experiences but this one shocked me. Management....get off your tails and help these pups!!! read more

i made the mistake of wandering into this pet store the other night.....the puppies had no energy, some even had crusty crud in their eyes.....some people were holding a maltese puppie, she hung there like a dish towel....there were a couple who wanted to buy a schnauzer puppy....the sales team ( all looked about 12 years old) were playing lets make a deal with the puppy like it was a used car, in the end one of the women left in tears without the puppy.......it was all very upsetting.......this store puts huge mark-ups on their puppies, then mark them down like they are working with the customer, they cut the price to something that is still too high, but act like they've given a big discount........the average age of these puppies is 4 months.......that means they've spent the entire first 4 months in a cage.......this is way too cruel..........i think places like this should be banned from selling living creatures because the get they same compassion as a bag of dog food or a squeak toy read more

We went in mostly to play with a dog (so at least one can get out of their cage) and found a few odd things. Animals are fed and the food is taken away. I've not see food in a cage yet. There were no toys or anything else in the cages. When we took one of the dogs out he went bezerk and too about 15 mins to calm him down and to stop biting everything including ourselves. As with disapline issue even with puppies I blame the handle side of the leash. Even though it doesn't show ovious mistreatment it shows lack of caring. They also had a cattle dog with an upper respatory problem, The vet looked at him and said goodbye, your gone. I want to save even one of them however it will keep the cycle going. Use the adoption option or use the internet and find a real breeder, not like theirs in TN, home of the high kill shelters. So I've gone to Debbys petland for a while now. I know people have said that this is the old company "woof" that used to be there, but it's not. This I a completely different company. I've asked many questions and looked it up,THEY DO NOT PUT THEIR DOGS TO SLEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If nobody buys them they GIVE the dog away to somebody that works there! Yes you might go in there and see a puppie eating it's own poop, but if your smart and actually know something it's because it's healthy for them. It's disgusting! But it will not do harm. I agree the dogs are in small cages. But they get out as much as they are in there. People come in and ask to play with these little guys all the time! And the dogs that don't get out much at all, well they let them run around the store play with them ect. The people that work there give the dogs the best love and care they can give. whoever works there is smart and knows what they are talking about! They do not sell tea cup puppies because of how horrible it is! Tea cup pups are worse to buy than dogs from a pet store! If you wanna know how people breed them look it up. And you'll regret thinking about it. The people that work there are there for the animals no just the puppies! If you go in there and you are rude to the people that work there, what is your problem? Just so you know: I was in Debbie Petland in Kingston a couple of years ago when there were a lot of crates of puppies being delivered. The paperwork on the crates said "Kansas." You KNOW that means puppy mills. Puppy mills treat dogs they way chicken farmers treat chickens....as if they were nothing...cages, , feces fall through the cage bars, no human or other canine contact. Go on the web and check it out if you don't believe me. The people at Debbie's Pet land stores are nice, I truly believe they want to do their best for the pups, as we who are tempted to "rescue" the pups also want to do. What we need is laws: laws in other states to prevent "puppy milling." And laws in this state to make sure all pet stores provide for the medical and well as social needs of these pups.
