Red Chili is the sister of Hanting, the 1-Michelin star Asian fusion restaurant in Den Haag. Though…read morein case this, it is most likely the ugly stepsister who thinks she can marry a prince. Red Chili does nothing but disappoint with mediocre food, terrible service and ridiculous wait times. My advice is to avoid this place because you will leave with an empty stomach and an even emptier wallet. Food: 1/5 You can order from several set menus or a la carte. We chose the 5 course "surprise" menu, and boy were we surprised... and not in a good way. The amuse and the first few courses were tasty but nothing amazing. However, when we reached our 4th course, the beef was practically raw on all 4 plates. We rarely send food back in the kitchen but this beef was raw and at room temperature. There was no way to chew it, let alone eat it like that. For a restaurant of this standard and price, I should not be getting raw meat. Also, the portions were tiny and I was still hungry. Service: 0/5 Oh so many things wrong with the service, where do I start?!? -Wait time was on average 45 minutes per course, so for a 5 course meal we were there for almost 5 hours. -All the wait staff are either new or college students. There was a lot of inconsistency regarding things like handing out menus, removal/placement of cutlery. In one case, the cutlery for the appetizers were removed for 2 people but remained for the other 2. Then 1 was removed a course later, and finally 3 courses in, the last set of cutlery for the appetizers were removed. -They serve tea in wineglasses. WTF? Atmosphere: 1/5 In terms of decoration, it is quite modern with many Asian elements. I wasn't a huge fan of it and might even be slightly offended, but I suppose if you are not Asian you wouldn't be so confused by all the buddha heads randomly placed in the dining room. One thing I really disliked though was how low the chairs and high the tables were. It was very difficult to eat and my arms could not reach over the table. Perhaps it is designed for the Dutch giants, but with chairs so low their knees would have been super uncomfortable. It wasn't pleasant for me either and I have short legs! Also this same problem repeats again in the women's toilet. The furniture selection must have been done by a child because the proportions make no sense. Value: 0/5 The surprise menu was 35 euros per person, without drinks. Let's say that I wouldn't eat here again even if it was free.

Asian fusion as they define themselves. Short menu but…read morereally well taken care of. Shiitake soup was just great and also the Ramen was excellent. Great big portion. They fell short on the cheek cake which is definitely not something it fits the Asian fusion piece. Great cocktails. My Japanese silk was very very tasty. Over all the service is nice but it is indeed quite slow. Not that I matter as I am a very chatty person but some of my friends were a bit annoyed. The ambience is cool with a very nice outside terrace for the non rainy day, an inner courtyard with fountain. Tables are really cramped up... and they do try to fit too many people on the same one but over all it is good, just book for an extra person and then you get there with one less :) it can be very very loud at moments. Not to pricey. Definitely a go again.

For our anniversary we wanted something relaxed and cozy but with good food and wine. We chose…read moreOpium for its asian menu and secluded inner garden. We ordered Asian Walk starter plate (€25,95) and a bottle of Marlborough Savignon Blanc (very crisp and mineral New Zealand white wine, approx. €31). It was a warm day and we are not big eaters so we thought it would be enough. And it was. Food looked beautiful and smelled delicious and the waiters were polite (maybe a little slow though). We started with the bread and duo of dips, followed by the tasting plate. Beijing duck and Bisque were stunning, shrimp and coconut soup were good and Vitello Tonato and Salmon cakes were average. The only problem I had is that restaurant poses itself as fusion ("restaurant where the Far East and West meet and several cultures join, inspired by all the beauty of Asia"), but west and east were not really incorporated together. You find a good asian food in Opium with sometimes out-of-place touches of european food. Read more on my blog http://www.nansypop.com/food/restaurant-opium/
