Looks like I have found the best little cafe Carrot Cake in Amsterdam at this place.
For the last 6 months I've passed De Bakkerswinkle nearly everyday, sometimes multiple times a day, and yet this is the first time I stop in. Due to a colleague's miscommunication, I had an hour and a half to kill before my next appointment. Having had the most terrible night of sleep in years, I woke up late and rushed out the door without eating.
And, after the time snafu, I was too worked up to think too much about food, where to get some, how to fill my time, etc. So I stopped in.
The delicious aroma of fresh baked goodness that fills the air helped me to realize I had made the right choice. I ordered fresh mint tea and a pastrami sandwich. It was ample and on the higher spectrum of mediocre. Having grown up in Los Angeles, I am pretty spoiled when it comes to great pastrami. And, having grown up in the United States, I'm also pretty used to enormous (read: ridiculous) portions of meat in pastrami sandwiches. So, I guess you can say I was disappointed with the amount of pastrami in their sandwiches, and that they serve it with lettuce and tomato, and mayo instead of mustard. (Who does that?) In the grand scheme of things, it's actually enough and was a good little lunch time nosh. Like I said, I'm just used to something else.
Anyway, after the sandwich was devoured, I realized I had most of my tea left and decided on a sweet treat - of which they have plenty to choose from. However I hadn't realized I was sitting with my back towards an assortment of desserty delights... and then I spotted it, my next choice: the carrot cake.
It was a big slice, fluffy, moist, and the frosting delicious, and not overly sweet. It was perfect, with just the right amount of walnutty crunch to add some dimension.
So there you have it. I could say more, but I think you should try for yourself. read more
