I just passed my DC driving test, and its all thanks to the wonderful instruction from this school! I would recommend them highly to anyone, especially folks like me who are learning as adults. Before my lessons with Mr. Ish, the only driving experience I had as a 36 year old was some parking lot practice, and a one hour lesson with a different school (which I didn't think was very helpful so I didn't continue). I took 5 lessons of 2 hours each (10 hours total) with him and found him to be an incredibly patient and supportive instructor. I had a lot of anxiety going into the whole process, and his calm presence always put me at ease and made me more confident. When I would make a mistake like making too wide of a turn into a streeet, he would point it out but also ask me why I did it that way. It felt like he really wanted to get to the root of the issue to help fix it. In the case of turning too wide, we realized that I was misjudging the distance of my car from the parked cars on the street. This thoughtful approach really helped diagnose and correct issues as they came up and it was so satisfying to visibly see myself improve. His approach to teaching parallel parking was super clear, and I was able to confidently parallel park during the test, and have now also done it in relatively tight spots on DC streets! He also recommended doing a last lesson right before the test in the Deanwood neighborhood (where the DMV test takes place). This was great advice, and Mr. Teddy accommodated me for a pre-test lesson on short notice. I used the school's car for the test, which was helpful since I was familiar with it. The day of the test there was a really long wait at the DMV and Mr. Teddy waited with me patiently and was also really supportive. All the communication and reminders from the school about lesson times, locations were timely and clear, Mr. Ish was always on time for picking me up, and it was just a seamless experience end to end. read more

FIVE STARS IS NOT ENOUGH STARS FOR DC STAR DRIVING SCHOOL!! First and foremost, I am a native New Yorker. Born and bred and have never been behind the wheel of a vehicle. I transplanted to DC in 2005 and did not decide to pick up driving till recently. I am 30 and I needed to learn how to drive before my move to Rochester. I saw that this company had five stars and I decide to sign up for 3 - 2 hour lessons and an additional one our lesson with Mr. Ish. I recently passed my test on the absolute last day of my permit expiration. I am super elated and it was all thanks to Mr. Ish and Teddy. They were very patient and helpful with their instruction. They have tons of experience with helping students prepare for the examination by taking you on potential routes in the neighborhood and giving you tips on how to maneuver through DC traffic. The test itself is not that hard but the instruction helps a ton. Hidden gems such as the immediate roundabout once you leave the DMV parking lot and the hidden stop signs can be helpful to notice in practice and it helped me when I passed my examination. My exam was the exact route that I did in practice multiple times with Mr. Ish. I felt very comfortable on the road and that was due to the repetitive nature of our practice runs. I also decided to rent the vehicle through the company because I was already very comfortable with the controls/setup and I did the extra hour beforehand which was very helpful. Teddy did my instruction and he gave me extra tips on how to approach the exam. All in all, it was an exceptional experience. I cannot thank Mr. Ish and Teddy enough. They run a very successful business and I hope you all choose them for future instruction. From native metro rider to driver in 3 weeks...Ill take it! Thanks DC Star Driving School. You guys are amazing. P.S. The test isn't that hard. There is no parallel parking. If you rent the vehicle, they will set it up for you so it is easier to leaving the parking lot. As long as you do not crash or commit a horrible mistake (speeding through a stop sign, crashing etc.) you will pass. Trust me. Everyone who tested at my time passed because they made it back to the parking lot safely. I spoke to my examiner the entire time and he was giving me extra tips during my exam. Just wrapped up my road test and passed thanks to the great instruction received from DC Star. I booked 2 driving sessions with them to prepare and build up my confidence behind the wheel along with the car rental with 1hr instruction for the day of the test. The route used by the DMV tester was one we practiced so I had no problems during the test. The customer service was great and so were the instructors. Online booking was a breeze and when I had to reschedule my appointment it was easily done over the phone. Finding the right instructor is so important and I am quite the nervous driver. However, even though the instruction did not match my needs, the customer service was always great. I had given up on getting my driver's license... until I met Ishtiaq (Mr. Ish)! After the first lesson itself, I felt a lot more confident. When I was eight years old, my five-year-old little sister announced that something was tapping on the wall of her bedroom at night. My parents thought she was full of shit, the way five-year-olds often are. But when they listened closely, they could hear it, too. There was something in the wall, all right. Something alive. That's when we started noticing the enormous, aggressive, terrifying stinging insects circling the corner of our house where her bedroom was. And that's when we called Bee Busters. Out came a young fellow in a white jumpsuit bearing the Bee Busters logo (a possibly copyright-infringing parody of the Ghostbusters logo), who identified the culprit as an unruly swarm of Continental Murder Bees or Brazilian Nightmare Wasps or whatever. I was eight. I don't remember. What I do remember is watching how calm and professional the guy was, and thinking about how weird it must be to have a job where you exclusively deal with completely wigged-out people. Like being a Bee Buster. Or an oncologist. Or a guy who teaches terrified adults how to drive. Hi, I'm Andy, and I'm a 32-year-old adult with a college degree and a steady job. And I just last week got my driver's license. I can sort of defend this: I've lived in cities all my life, I legitimately hate cars, and I love both walking and public transportation. But, yeah, at a certain point, I was just putting it off because I was afraid of driving and embarrassed that I hadn't gotten this taken care of sooner. So after sixteen years of cadging rides from friends and watching bouncers roll their eyes at my District of Columbia Identification Card (on the back, in big letters, it says, "NOT A DRIVER'S LICENSE"), it was time. You can't take your kid to the doctor in an Uber, y'know? In one brief rush of forward progress last year, I got a learner's permit, which I promptly stuck in a drawer. And, with a week to go before it was set to expire, I set up a road test. Then I finally made a good decision: I called Teddy. The point I want to make isn't that Teddy did a good job preparing me for the test. He did, for sure; after two hours with Teddy, I felt entirely ready, and ended up getting a 93 out of 100. He even helped to make the arrangements and let me use his car. But, more importantly, Teddy tolerated my completely unacceptable level of anxiety with incredible patience and good humor. At no point did he give voice to the glaringly obvious fact that it was pathetic for a grown-ass man to be learning how to change lanes, let alone having conniptions about it. Instead, he managed to give me confidence in the stuff I was doing right and tell me what I was screwing up in a way that didn't immediately drive me into a panic attack. The day I went to take the test, I waited outside the DMV next to a Hispanic woman around my age holding a folder and waiting for an examiner. Hey, I thought. I'm not the only adult doing this. Maybe there's nothing wrong with me. Maybe all my fear and shame were misplaced. Maybe this was always going to be fine. Then a teenager bounded up to her and screamed, "Mommy, I passed!" That's what life is like when you're a 32-year-old who doesn't have a driver's license. And that's why I'm glad I asked Teddy to help me get one. I mean, look, I passed the test, okay? And you can, too, Fellow Adult. But you and I both know that you're not shopping around for a driving instructor because you need driving instruction. You need a guru who can get you through the boundless humiliation of learning to drive as a grown-up. You need a coach who helps you not feel like vomiting at the thought of trying to park in a crowded lot. If I could give Teddy more than 5 stars I would. Wow! Just wow! Here's my story: I am not from the U.S. and up until I met Teddy and got behind the wheel, I was not familiar with U.S. roads and traffic rules. I have NEVER had to drive in my life. The 2-3 times I came close to driving was mostly stick-shift and the steering wheel was always on the right hand side of the vehicle. I have been in the U.S. for almost 5 years and only recently got my lazy self to apply for a learner's permit (which I then kept in my wallet and forgot about). A week before my learner's permit was about to expire, I freaked out as I did not want to take the stupid knowledge test again or go through DMV harassment. In a state of panic, I Yelped, Googled, talked to friends - "What should I do???" - There was just no way that I could get lessons or even a road skills test scheduled before August/Sept. I was about to give up when I came across Teddy. I called him and he picked up the phone immediately (other driving schools do NOT pick up or IF they pick up, there's an automated message or some rude, condescending operator acting like it is the worst thing in the world that you do not know how to drive). Teddy was so responsive, courteous, and assuring that I knew I would be in good hands with him and the other instructor Mr. Hassan. Teddy kept true to all his promises and delivered against all odds! He arranged my lessons on very short notice. I told him I need more hours and instead of not caring and making me pay for more hours, he assessed me and honestly said that I do not need more hours. He then worked around my crazy schedule, he somehow squeezed in a road skills test for me (miracle!!!), and dealt with all minor hiccups so amazingly, that I never felt like I was an idiot behind the wheel (even though I might have been at times haha). He treated me more like a friend than a customer, which is just the best thing ever. And guess what! I passed my test and got my license - exactly on the day my learner's permit was set to expire. Thank you Teddy! You are a miracle worker! And I wish you all the best. Teddy and Mr. Hassan are both excellent instructors that know how to make you comfortable begin the wheels. I turned 30 this year and had been scared to drive all my life due to a very bad learning experience with my dad! They give you precious tips and make sure you don't pay extra lessons if you don't need to. I got my driving license after 13 hours of practice with them. Nothing else since I don't have a car in DC and had nobody to practice with. They also facilitated my test with the DMV, the car etc. I really felt everything was under control. I am a licensed driver who had not driven in over a decade. To say I was a terrified and insecure driver is an understatement. After 3 classes with Mr. Ish, I have built up the courage to drive my car which has been in a parking garage for 3 weeks untouched since I got the car. I actually wanted to have more classes but Mr. Ish rightfully told me that he could tell I was becoming dependent on feeling comfortable driving with him in the car and that he believed I had enough skills by my 3rd class to drive on my own. This caught me by surprise but it showed that he genuinely trusted me behind the wheels and wanted me to trust myself. Any other instructor would have simply encouraged me to take more classes to get more money out of me, but Mr. Ish gave me honest feedback from our first class to the last and although nervous, I'm thankful that he build enough confidence in me to get in my car and drive. read more

I scheduled a driving test through DC star driving which he confirmed more than a month in advance. As the date approached I sent repeated text messages and calls to inquire about my driving test and lesson, and got no response. Up till the day before my scheduled test I called, and texted, no response. I then called him with another number, only to be told that my test was not scheduled- less than 24hrs to date. He said he was "out of town" and that he was going to call back later that same day to confirm a new date. if you say I never heard back from him you are correct! read more

Teddy was amazing!! He made me feel so at ease and never got frustrated. He's a great coach and taught/showed me all the tricky parts of the road test, as well as going over each of the 3-possible routes twice. I felt very confident in my driving after the 2 hour lesson, and can't wait to take another course! The prices are incredibly reasonable and definitely beat the competition - they are mainly cheaper because you meet him at the Rhode Island Metro Station. 5 stars for sure! I am a 23 year old that, as of two weeks ago, had never drove (safe for maybe a few parking lots haha). However, that all needed to change when my company relocated me to DC. All of a sudden driving became a requirement. Enter DC Star Driving School and Mr. Ish, my instructor. Mr. Ish has always been on-time, very friendly and super patient. He's a great communicator and knows the test routes for DC inside and out. He listens to you and your goals. I had signed up for ten hours of instruction. Four hours in, on a Wednesday, I found a spot open up on Friday for the test. I quickly called DC star and they secured me their vehicle and even got me one final two hour lesson before the test. On the day of the test I was met on time and greeted with a car ready to go all backed into the stall. The instructors all know the examiners and seem to have a nice working relationship. With just six hours of BTW instruction I learned enough to pass the test. I look forward to my next six hours and appreciate their flexibility with me. read more

Teddy is a great professional trainer with extra patience that always boosts my confidence. I had a different trainer in different school before I met him which made me dislike driving. I only wanted to experience DC traffic with my old stick shift license but I ended up hating driving and lost all the little confidence I had left. After a while, I wanted to give it one last try with DC star (automatic this time) and believe me I was on the freeway after one class with him. I took DMV road test last week and passed on my first trial! I had only three sessions with Teddy and that's all! Learning with him is like giving a ride to someone who happened to be more experienced on driving on the passenger seat.
