Great experience! I was walking thru Fort Greene on my way to a job interview. Somehow with my dumb luck my contact lens pooped out of my eye! The worst. For a second I tried to look for it but then I asked myself what was I really going to do if I found it? Put it back in my eye? No way. Luckily for me DC Optics was right acres the street from where this all took place. I made my way over, although it felt incredibly difficult to maneuver with my really bad vision and only one contact. I ran in and told the guy my story. I told him I had no time to waste because of the interview. Luckily I knew my contact lens prescription, even more lucky was the fact that they had my Rx in stock! I had never seen the place before and the guy, who was actually the owner and the optometrist said they just opened. It's a real cool looking place and has a lot more modern charm than a Sterling Optical or LensCrafters. The guy I met there was named Dennis. He was so friendly and helped me get to my interview on time. This is my new eyeglass place. I am totally going to go back there for all my needs. You should too. read more

Best Eye Doctor I've met in the 20 years of needing one. Dr. Dennis Chen was super helpful and quick on responding to emails/phone calls. My husband went for his visit and Dr. Chen was super helpful in explaining everything and to give us a better understanding of the diagnosis. He genuinely cares and takes his time with patients. He also impressed me very much with his knowledge of all the new technologies regarding eye check up and eye care. My husbands appointment was a Thursday or a Friday an his glasses were ready for him by Saturday afternoon. Tip- great trendy selection of glasses hand picked by the doctor himself. It wasn't an overwhelming experience more of a fun one. We will definitely be going back and HIGHLY recommend this place! read more

i've previously seen dr. cheng when he was at the union square cohens. i was sad he left but happy he has opened his own spot in my neighborhood. needless to say when i needed new spectacles, i headed straight to him. his office is kid and dog friendly, which deserve stars there. there's complimentary coffee, tea, juice boxes and snacks. what's really not to love? i love that they carry 141 frames, which provides a pair of glasses to kids less fortunate with your frame purchase. it's the tom's of eye wear. discounts for pratt and st. joe's students also appreciated. great addition to the clinton hill nabe. oh yeah, and resident frenchie ollie is ready for cuddles. read more

dr. cheng and the staff are very friendly and nice. however, his staff scrambles for my insurance details at the very last minute, or even after an appointment. they seem disorganized in that respect, even with the tablet check-in. but what really gets me is that, he gives no clear explanation as to why more expensive contacts would suit my eyes better or why the the same exact procedure/contacts costs $20 more than the previous year. i would be fine with those things so long as i know the reasons. but even when i ask, he speaks so fast and seems he is in a rush every time. their receipts merely bear the full amount which doesn't help, either. i'd find it fair if he took 5 minutes to explain the itemized costs on paper to his patients, not verbally and not in such a rushed manner. read more

Best optometric (and fun) visit ever. I needed new contacts and was overdue for an eye exam. The office has a pretty hip vibe with pics and murals of Ollie dog. They start off with a digital retinal imaging machine which scans the eye. No more dilation!!! Dr Cheng provided the most thorough eye exam. Everything was explained in detail and shown on a retinal map. It's great for a nerd like me. I will be moving from Brooklyn to the burbs soon but DC Optics will be worth the trip. I have a difficult high index Rx, a slight astigmatism and need progressives. My eye doc of years told me the only solution was mono vision. That's one contact lens for distance and once for close. Well it stopped working for me. I saw the reviews on YELP and thought maybe Dr Cheng might have a new solution. He told me about Duette contacts. They are a hard plastic and soft lens hybrid. So I tried them. I've worn contacts for decades but these are a challenge to learn how to insert and remove. I think that may be why my old doc did not mention them. Watching someone struggle with these could try the patience of any one. Dr Cheng was always encouraging and never rushed me. I finally "got it" and I am super happy. My vision is better than it has been for years. DC Optics is a very welcoming place. Alex is friendly and helpful. Ollie is cute and likes having his tummy and ears scratched. I took my four year old daughter here to have her eyes checked. Dr. Cheng was absolutely wonderful with her! She came in nervous, but thanks to Dr. Cheng's sense of humor, she giggled through the whole exam and is already asking to go back again. After the appointment, Dr. Cheng even took time to put temporary tattoos on both of my daughters' hands (tattoos of the office dog, Ollie!) and show them all Ollie's tricks. Bless me father, for I have sinned. It's been 20 years since my last eye exam. And as like everything else- as we age so do our eyes. But Dr Cheng was amazing!! There was no guilt about my neglecting my eyes. He was super thorough examining eyes and managed to discover this little sun caused my cornea callous- my tanning days are over ::::sobs uncontrollably::: he even managed to validate my sanity by telling me there's a reason I can't see certain things up close. ("really mary, it's a 80% off boot sale sign- illuminated and flashing!!?!" "I couldn't see it") so joining the army of people who need some sort of corrective lens- here I go. Which Dr Cheng was so patient helping me pick out glasses. Which in all fairness "you don't really need them, but they'll help with detail and driving at night" well I'll take help where I can get it! I cannot begin to express the degree of satisfaction I experienced at DC Optics. Dr. Cheng is the penultimate professional in all of the medical dealings I have encountered in my entire life (I am 50 years old). I came to his business from NJ. I had to take the New Jersey Transit from Summit to New York Penn Station. I then caught the C train to Brooklyn's Lafayette Street. Next, I walked the one plus miles to Dr. Cheng's shop on Myrtle Street. When I entered the store I was soaked from the the humidity. Danny, the eye tech, offered me a cold glass of water (another cold glasses soon followed). It was a bit before 3, my scheduled appointment time and they were ready for me. I went through a battery of tests that were painless and Danny was very sensitive towards my eye after I explained to him I suffered not one but two orbital injuries to the floor of my left eye. He concluded the tests and within minutes. I barely had time to play with Ollie, Dr. Cheng's cute Frenchie mascot, before I was called into the main exam room. First let me say, Dr. Cheng has a rare bedside manner that should be used as a training tool for all student optometrists. While he thanked me for coming in, what really struck me was how sincerely appreciative he was towards me for having come from such a long distance just to be seen by him. His humility and graciousness was on display more than once during my visit. With a stellar rating on Yelp and Google as well as as Zocdocs, I felt he had a right to exhibit some of smugness so often seen in super docs and lawyers who have been consumed by public adulation and online ratings. But not Dr. Cheng. He gave me the most thorough eye exam I have ever had. Being one of the many citizens of this country who do not carry health insurance, I am very reluctant to venture blindly (no pun intended) into securing medical services because I know I will be paying full price for the services received. The cost of this exam was $149.00. I had calculated in my head, what I had come to expect from an eye exam because I wanted to make sure I was getting a bang for my buck. My concerns were put to rest early on. Dr. Cheng delved deep into my medical history. He explained things about my vision I had never heard from any other optical professional. He broke down my misunderstanding of depth perception and the different vision options I could pursue to rid myself of an aversion to driving. But here is where I was just blown away by Dr. Cheng. After an exhaustive exam of reading charts, flipping through corrective lenses, getting my eye pressure tested, and an informal and detailed Q & A, Dr. Cheng had determined that my right eye vision had changed a bit. When he put a lense over my eye (glasses on), my vision was incredibly crisp--almost unnaturally crisp. He said my reaction was natural. Seeing perfect vision after seeing the world through what I thought was perfect vision. But he decided to leave my prescription the same when he saw my left eye give up or pull away. I sensed it as soon as he put the lense to my face. It was as if my left eye just gave up--surrendering to my dominant right eye. He actually commended my former doctor for seeing this as the reason for my current prescription. Underprescribing so as not to subject my right eye to an inordinate amount of work. He then concluded the exam by showing me a 3D computer image of my eyes. That was both freaky and fascinating. On my way out, he thanked me a third time for travelling such a great distance to procure his services. Alex the wonderful receptionist, processed my bill. I expressed interest in getting a lense in a frame I had and she was gracious in explaing the different types of lenses I could get in my glasses. Danny took my measurements, took my frames and told me my frames would be ready on a few days. I am sure one can tell by the length of this review I had a phenomenal experience here. When most people seem to be dissatisfied or distrustful of the entire medical profession, it is truly refreshing to have found a dedicated, honest and fair professional engaged in not only his work but in his patients and their needs. Dr. Cheng is without a doubt, worthy of each one of his five stars earned and I would recommend him to anyone seeking an optometrist without hesitation. read more

I've never written a yelp review before, but felt compelled to write one for DC Optics because I had such a great experience at their office! Everyone who works in the office is awesome. Also, Dr. Cheng is amazing- super friendly, patient, and kind. He also clearly knows his stuff, taking time to answer questions and explaining things really clearly. I came into the office after having a less than stellar experience with another NYC-area optometrist two weeks earlier. Dr. Cheng helped me find another brand of contacts that were better suited to my needs, and adjusted my contacts/glasses prescriptions. While I ultimately only needed minor adjustments to my prescriptions, I appreciated being able to ask questions and getting what I actually needed. Also, I loved the technology he has that enables him to take complete photos of your eyes. Being walked through what the photos show was super helpful and really cool. Also, what's not to love about a place that has an office dog?! Ollie is adorable! Dr. Cheng and his entire approach to business deserves all the praise it's received on Yelp. I came here originally because my husband had done a bit of research and gone to Dr. Cheng first. I quickly did the same. We were both impressed with Dr. Cheng as a healthcare professional, as well as the efficiency and professionalism of the service. First, the in-take process, billing, and appointment booking/reminders are managed by an integrated software system that made the usual administrative processes incredibly fast and easy. Second and most important, Dr. Cheng is punctual (no waiting), professional, and clearly focused on his patients' health first and foremost. I never felt sold or pressured (which has been more the norm in the past): instead, I felt like Dr. Cheng was really passionate about health and educating his patients. During my appointment, he took pains to debunk a few myths I'd been told by my previous ophthalmologist, and dedicated time to explain the reasons behind each part of the exam and my own results. Finally, when it came to lenses and glasses, he approached his role more as an information sharer and educator, not salesman. For contacts, he was able to lay out, in an unbiased and fact-based fashion, the pros/cons of each contact lens option (incorporating cost considerations). For glasses, he was highly flexible: not pushy about his own frames and willing to take old frames or frames purchased elsewhere to get you the glasses you want. In short, can't say nicer things about him, the entire experience, or his staff. We're definitely loyal patients from here on out. read more

Saw him the same day and he was really informative. He answered all my questions and then some, explaining the how's and why's of my eye and eye care. It was much appreciated. Also, he has an adorable french bulldog that just chills in the store. Well well well, I must say I was impressed with the EXCELLENT service. Dennis is a Kewl ( cool, hey I'm from Cali folks lol ) personable dude who has Great people skills. The mascot was lounging on my 1st visit but on my 2nd visit to pick up my glasses ( quick turn around- yeaaa!!! ), Rabbit Ears ( my apology.. name memory is not my strong point , yep even when it comes to doggies lol ) walked up to me, greeted me with a doggie sniff, a look and sashayed back to his ( hmmm I think its a male .... Now gender is something I do remember .. didn't look to check..smh..lol ) lounging space.. So so happy I came across DC Optics via Yelp! Went in today for an eye exam after not having been to see an eye doc for 5+ years, and wow! The place was very clean, and the staff was very organized. I walked in, filled out the tablet and was seen right away. I was in and out for an eye exam in about 20 minutes, amazing! Staff was so friendly, and Dr. Cheng was so knowledgeable. He offered information about everything he did and explained everything so well. Doctors usually make people (me) nervous and being so well informed really helped, on top of how nice and up to date his whole facility was. He informed me I shouldn't get lenses from Warby Parker, because my prescription is so bad he has seen issues with it in the past. So I ran to pick up my frames from them and came back to drop them off with no appointment necessary. Fit me for them, and I was on my way in less than 5 minutes. Being a NY'er, you know anywhere that is in and out on top of fabulous customer service and well informed doc visits- you really can't get any better than that! Dr Cheng and his assistant were awesome. I brought my 2 year old daughter for an exam and for a second opinion on a possible condition. Dr Cheng was great with my daughter, she was so relaxed and cooperative during the whole exam and I owe it all to Dr. Cheng's professionalism and patience. He explained everything very clearly and thoroughly to my husband and me. I came in as a frantic and panicked parent thinking the worst of my daughters eyes. I left feeling relieved and better understanding what was going on with my daughters eyes! I know what to look out for and what the game plan is. I am thankful to have found Dr Cheng! Great experience! There's a reason why I travel all the way from Bay Ridge. Had a thorough exam with explanations throughout, and Dr. Cheng even took the time to show me what my vision was like with and without my astigmatism- I've worn contacts for 17 years but was always told it was not significant enough to correct. The difference is crazy! Walked out that day with my corrected prescription and the rest will be at my workplace in just a couple of days. Can't say enough about this practice. Dr. Cheng is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. He takes time to make you feel welcome and to explain everything he's doing and everything he sees. The whole office is warm and comfortable, and the staff is great. Honestly, I enjoy my appointments here. Plus, they are always quick with little requests, like a prescription being emailed or a drivers license form. I will keep going here as long as I possibly can. read more

It was such a pleasant surprise to find this optometrist. They've obviously set up the business with a focus on strong customer service. Hard to describe exactly, but the office feels more like a friendly coffeeshop than a doctor's office, and in a way that doesn't sacrifice professionalism. Dr. Cheng performed the eye exam quickly and thoroughly, providing me lots of good info about taking care of my eyes and contact lenses. I'm pregnant, so he also gave me the rundown on eyecare for babies and children -- and apparently his office provides free baby eye exams. One of the worse experiences as a customer ever I experienced no customer service at all. I walked into this business on a Tuesday night for assistance with getting my son new frames since he had broken his. With nearly an hour before closing, the person behind the desk stated I was about to close. I explained what I needed and he said "mam that's going to take to long and we can't just do it like that. I left because I thought 6pm was the closing time. I walk down the block but came back to check business hours and as I'm taking a picture I noticed the person had turned off the lights , now comes to the door unlocks it and says "mam can I help you?" I tell him "it says that you close at 7 on Tuesdays and it's only 6:16. As I'm getting upset I'm wondering what is this all about? He said "I just had a family emergency are you upset because I have an emergency?" Well now in full upset mode I took my picture and left. The next day I called the number that was listed on the business hours posting stating that I would like to speak with a manager or supervisor. I then look further at the picture that I took the day before and noticed that the "business had a facebook page so I went on to complain about the gentlemen who did not try to help me at all. It was then that I realized that dc optics stood for Dennis Cheng and he was the same person who would not help me the night before. Of course I posted on his page...which he didn't like and he stated that I had "left out a lot of facts but included everything that painted him negatively" and that is facebook page is "not to settle disputes." He knows that he tried to help but he realized a long time ago that you can't make everyone happy. He also said that I should make an appointment to meet with his so that we could get a fresh start. Well that's not going to happen, and I told him that I went somewhere else to get my son's glasses fixed and that I would never be walking in his place of business again. So these are the points I would like to highlight. 1.The store was empty when I walked in at least 50 minutes before closing time. Why couldn't he just say well there's no one here, let me see if I can help. 2.The Dr. never introduced himself as "Dr. Cheng" and this is "my business"...I found that out when I went on facebook the next day. Poor customer service from a "professional" who's business is new to this diverse neighborhood. Well that's my experience with dc optics. read more
