North beach! This is the spot…read more The water has buoys marking the spot for swimmers to swim. The crystal blue waters, the white sand beach. Tequila. Cerveza. This place has it all. The water is pretty calm, so no putting up with massive waves. The pelicans stay a good distance away. There's so many options in staggering distance from this beach for bathrooms, cantinas, drinks, shade, whatever. This is the top end of isla mujeres (island of women.) The other end of Isla Mujeres, across the island from this beach is the easternmost point of Mexico! This beach is free. It's not associated directly with any hotel or restaurant, so anyone can come here, and they do.

Shallow waters make it a perfect beach for enjoying both sand and surf. Many boats will pull up to this beach as well and people will get off and wade up to the beach restaurants/bars. We had minimal seaweed when we were there. Many of the beachfront hotels offer umbrellas and beach chairs. You do not have to be a guest of the hotel to use the umbrellas/chairs. They will charge approximately $150 MEX per chair and umbrella. Pay in Pesos. It cost us $450 for all three. That's only about $23 USD for all day so it's very affordable. The only downside is the constant flow of vendors selling everything from massages to trinkets, to beach towels. Don't be surprised if you see various forms of fully armed Mexican law enforcement. Bottom line - Beautiful beaches, soft sand, and perfect water. What more can you ask for.

My group wanted to do snorkeling and at first I was going to go with a place off Viator but Reddit…read moresteered me to Casa del Buceo - it's a small locally owned business and the prices are very fair compared to other places. For reference, a private group of eight on a 2 hour snorkeling tour was 1500 pesos per person. I think we could have done 2.5 hours but more on that later. Booking and confirming the reservation was a breeze - I did it all over email but they also have WhatsApp. Two days before our scheduled date, they asked to push it to a day earlier because the weather was looking bad the morning that we requested so I felt very reassured that they were keeping an eye on the forecast. Now I've only gone snorkeling once before but the snorkeling around the island gets pretty choppy with the waves. I'm saying that as someone who gets seasick at the drop of a hat and even thought I took medication before this trip, I still got super seasick as soon as the boat stopped and we were just swaying around and putting on our fins. Getting in the water and seeing all the cool fish (the visibility was great) helped but by the end of the second snorkeling stop (where they took us out much deeper and the waves were ROUGH), a few others and I were basically green and we called the end of the tour and headed back. I can't say enough good things about the people who work here, from the guy who helped get us set up with our equipment and later brought me a mug of super fizzy Coke to help settle my stomach to our tour guide who pointed out neat things below us (like the underwater sculptures at MUSA). I will say that the actual mechanics of snorkeling was a learn as you go approach - we didn't get much instruction other than just to blow on the googles if they fogged up - so unless you're an experienced snorkeler/swimmer, you might spend the first ten minutes accidentally gulping salt water. Once I did get the hang of it, it was a lot of fun. And even though the open water got terrifying near the end and, despite my nausea, I was fighting back fears of being swept away on the current, I felt safe that our guide was somewhere close around us. I don't think snorkeling is in the cards for me in the near future but for anyone else who's interested, I can't recommend CdB enough!

Casa del Buceo kept $120 USD of our deposit, and did not provide any service. Why not a full refund? That's a good question. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place. Unless you are going same day when the weather is nice, maybe the team is good, but I wouldn't reserve in advance again with them due to their lack of flexibility.

We did the whale shark excursion with Mexico Divers today. I will break the review into two parts…read more The booking process and the actual excursion. Booking process- We walked in - in person - to book the excursion. The employee was very friendly and professional. She explained everything throughly. My only gripe is they charge a 10 percent service charge to pay with a card. When the excursion is expensive - with a group - that charge can add up quickly. We were quoted $30-$35 USD cheaper all over the island. Based on a recommendation, we booked anyway - after walking to find an ATM - this was inconvenient. The excursion- The captain and guide were amazing. They took us out to swim with the whale sharks and we hit the jackpot. We also swam with mantas - which was awesome. On the way back, the captain made pitstop so the group could do a little snorkeling. Everyone loved it. Again, my only gripe was the service charge - if that wasn't there - or if it was around 3 percent - I would give a 5.

I signed up for the refresher course, which was right before the dive, so it only added an hour and a half to the total time. Marie, my instructor, was AWESOME. She walked me through everything and was incredibly patient. Her positive energy was infectious. I was pretty stressed out during the start of the first dive, and she knew exactly how to chill me out. By the second dive it felt like old hand. Also... the museum and reef were super cool, too :) Highly recommended.

Jesús, Fernando & Sergio truly provided the absolute best experience I've had, not just in Mexico,…read morebut out of all the times I've been snorkeling. They were extremely knowledgeable, friendly, funny, safety oriented & made an effort to make sure that all guests had an amazing time. My group had just missed the ferry (coming in from Cancun) and they still accommodated us & made sure we made our reservation when they had no obligation to. Not to mention they were extremely responsive & easy to communicate with during this whole fiasco. They brought us to absolutely stunning locations & I have never swam with as many schools of fish as I did during this tour. Jesús was even willing to help me get a closer shot of the underwater statues. They educated our group on best practices to preserve the reef (which I already am aware of, but appreciate for the less-informed) & stopped the boat when a plastic bag got caught in the wind so that they could fish it out to reduce on ocean plastic (I am very keen on leaving as little of an impact on the world we live in). We were served sandwiches / ceviche + totopos for lunch and water / margaritas were provided. Their thoughtfulness, mindfulness & willingness to provide the absolute best experience truly outshined any excursion I have done in the past. Their service is truly unparalleled. Would highly recommend - thank you for the amazing experience!!

Ended up being around $45 per person. Seems like the reviews are more favorable on TripAdvisor. It started off a bit disorganized at first, but we finally started boarding and ended up stopping by three different reef spots along La Isla Mujeres. The current were strong but we had two guides looking out for us and taking underwater pictures for us (still pending). Boat included bottled water, margaritas, and tequila. We made sure to tip well. Lunch was included in the price at Playa Tiburón, which took place after all the snorkeling (thank goodness). Coronado fish, veggie slaw, rice, and butter spaghetti, corn tortillas, spicy sauce and salt. Our guides helped with prepping and serving lunch. Overall, we had a fun time with Island Adventures Mexico!
