Our first trip with Daytripping was a mixed experience. Having been waitlisted for it, we were in the very last row of seats. In spite of this, the ride was not bumpy but quite smooth. We weren't greeted with any enthusiasm in spite of announcing we were first-timers. The kitchen behind us was somewhat messy and indeed, shortly after we departed, the coffeemaker fell to the floor with a crash. We began to notice that the bus wasn't as clean as it could have been. Coffee spills, footprints, dirty windows were apparent. Numerous things like armrests, handles, shades and tray table latches were broken. Each time we encountered one, we were told that it had "just happened". When the Director boarded the bus after a couple of stops, he carried huge pink boxes. He was familiar with many of the patrons and very solicitous of us all. He passed out nice napkins, weak coffee and the donut shop pastries. Underwhelming! Nor was it a 30 passenger, bus as the website boasts, but 44 people. Not until San Francisco did we pick up our tour guide. Everything changed. He began to narrate everything we could see and a few things we had to take on faith. He was outstanding! Our destination was the "Stanford Campus and Art From Around the World". From the website, "Walk to enjoy up close the more than 50 sculptures set around the campus. The Rodin sculpture garden is a gem." I would say the trip was over-promised and under-delivered. We drove the campus quite a bit but only made one meaningful stop to enjoy the tower and a chapel. A detour off campus to a mediocre seafood restaurant was a waste of precious time. Better to eat in a campus cafeteria and get to enjoy the art. Though Stanford has four buildings of art, we went to none. The walk among the sculpture was cancelled for lack of time. Maybe they've never done this trip before and can now refine it. I hope so. If if go Daytripping again, it will be to a specific event. read more
