Great place! We've tried two different martial arts locations and it did not work out. The format…read moreof these classes are easier for my younger child to follow. He generally has a hard time listening and following directions, but he seems to be doing a lot better here. We are excited to see how far he will progress with Mengs.

I gave this place a try and two things stood out to me as major red flags:…read more 1. There was a girl who Benny Meng told the whole class they had to "spank" for her birthday. Everyone was told to get paddles (normally for crescent kicks), and she was forced to walk a gantlet of sorts while everyone literally spanked her on the butt-one after the other. It was so weird and reeked of sexual assault to me. I asked her in the bathroom after if she was okay and she said "yeah......" but it was flat with no affect. I said "is that normal here" and she said "I don't know." I said "you didn't have to let them do that you know" and she said she did because she was a black belt and they are expected to do whatever "Sifu Meng" tells them to do. All I can say both then and now is: HELL NO! 2. I went there because I had heard about Wing Chun being started by a woman and to me that was a major selling point as a woman. If the system was supposed to be effective for a woman to defend against men then I wanted to look into that. It turned out though that there are tons of other way more legit private teachers in the area who don't market like Meng does. I can promise you he isn't actually any rank he says. I dug just a little bit and found out all of his teachers disowned him and said he has no permission to teach in their name. So they say he made up his own system with a fake history where he claims the Wing Chun lady had nothing to do with anything. It seems like he has a problem with the very idea that a woman of all people could have anything to do with Wing Chun, but what's it matter anyway, since his teachers all say he only learned the most basic levels of their system and just combined it with Tae Kwon Do from his wife's dad and his son's high school wrestling. I am only making this post because a lady I work with just asked me if I had heard about this place and she mentioned how most of the reviews of it were good. I notice another one that exposes him for the con artist that he is. Dollars to donuts, I bet you the good reviews are his black belts who feel that they have to do whatever he says. Here's the spoiler though: he never actually got a black belt in Wing Chun himself! How can he give you one when he doesn't have one? Big yikes!

However, I changed my mind when some of the girls I worked with expressed interest in training. This was the closest place. I did call at first and didn't receive a call back like a previous review. However, knowing that most gym owners do everything at their gym like teaching, cleaning, scheduling, front desk, and even possibly working a full-time job in addition to running a gym, etc. I didn't take this personal... I looked at the time... saw it was class time and sent an email to the gym. I did receive an email back! Chris asked me if I ever trained. I told him yes but I'm probably going to only do no-gi because I didn't plan to train while I was here initially and didn't bring my stuff. He said told me it was no problem and he had a bunch of loaner gis that I was welcome to use. Chris is really down to earth and welcoming as well as all his students! The vibe is great at this gym. I've been training for over 9 years and I really appreciate when a gym welcomes guests as their own and has that family feel right when you come in! Come try them out if you are in town!

I was here short term for military training and education but had a great time training with the team here. Everyone was welcoming and encouraging. I had been out of training for over a year, and this was my first time coming back, since I had some free time while I was here. I was coached and welcomed as one of the team without a second thought. It is clear the culture they have here is intentional and supportive. I recommend anyone in the area train here.
