This was the first location of Baba Java and has since expanded through the city. Ran my Omani entrepreneurs, this little coffee shop became quite popular over the years. The staff working here are mostly teenagers or college students, who are very attentive and professional despite their young age. The owner clearly picked out incredible folks to be here who make Baba Java feel both welcoming and well kept. The interior of the space is fairly basic coffee shop design, but admittedly, a little bit dated in 2026 and lacks the unique vibe of some other independent coffee shops. Window views facing the strip mall parking lot don't create much of an ambiance either. With that said, design is not the main thing to come here for. The coffee is excellent and priced very reasonably, offering a great value for an establishment of this sort. There is easy to access WiFi and an overall feeling of being welcomed. A solid little coffee shop that allows customers to support some local business owners instead of a big chain.

I was specifically super excited to try their seasonal matcha special, which was made with horchata (also from Salud!) and strawberries, if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, we walked in only to find they were out of the supplies needed to make the drink. :( I was caught off guard and didn't know what to order, but the barista recommended a latte with maple flavor so I went with that. The interior was clean and spacious and had a relaxed and calm but energetic feeling to it. Good place to hang out or work quietly. There's a self-service area to spruce up or fix your drink or grab lids or stir sticks. Service was nice and my drink came out quickly. It was pretty good but not really the "right" drink for me. I like my stuff on the sweet side and this was much more balanced and coffee-forward. That said, it held its own against my sugar-craving taste buds and I drank most of it, which is usually the hallmark of good brew, lol. I don't really blame them because I blanked on what to order and just went with what was suggested. It's probably a great suggestion for lots of other folks! When I went to the counter, I took a moment to look at the menu, and told him it was the first time in. He took the time to explain the signature flavors, the various ways to order a drink, and even explained the different notes of the coffee beans they offered. I ended up ordering a vanilla cardamom cappuccino to go. The barista brought the coffee to my table, which I found extremely personable and kind, even though they had multiple orders to make. The coffee had great notes of cardamom and vanilla without being overly sweet, which I really appreciated. Even though I got it to go, the drink stayed warm for quite some time, and was in a compostable container. In addition to this, all UAB students actually get 10% off, just make sure to show your Blazer ID. One thing I noticed for future visits is that the tables are quite small, so it may not be the best place to do work or study, especially not in group settings. While it was a pretty quiet space that could be good for studying, the seating is not the most conducive to studying. In addition to this, Filter Coffee is located at 5 points, which makes parking difficult, but that is not the company's fault, just something to note if someone decides to visit. Overall, I definitely see myself going back to Filter and highly recommend it to anyone if they around the 5 Points area for the friendly staff, great coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere.

I didn't stay to work because every seat was taken both times I came in (late morning), so get here early or perhaps late, if you want a seat in the middle of the week. The baristas couldn't be nicer. They took their time and chatted with customers, a rarity in those crowded coffee chains. Do check out those seasonal lattes (I mean, for February, a cherry blossom latte? Say less). My favorite is on the regular menu, a salted rosemary latte and it's literally perfect. I adjusted the sweetness level to be less so, and I loved the notes of floral rosemary and coffee. Pro tip: skip the line and order ahead!

You either enter from the one way street paralleling it or from the alley that runs behind the building. It looks like you're driving up onto the sidewalk! If the line of long, it might be a bit of a wait, so I wouldn't count on it if you're in a hurry. I always get an Iced Blueberry Vanilla latte, and it's ~$7. It's quiet and has a variety of seating that ranges from a comfy couch to a few tables and chairs off to one side. It has private parking and a huge ramp plus a relatively open floorplan so it's accessible to everyone. The atmosphere is quiet and would be ideal for working, and the beverages that I've had so far were definitely up to par. Good espresso, alternative milks available, all the standard stuff. Not too much hustle and bustle, and plenty of quality caffeine. The employees that I've encountered have been friendly and prompt so the service is great. Additionally, the business serves as a nonprofit with the goal of addressing issues surrounding homelessness so that's a big plus. Overall this is definitely a spot worth checking out for a variety of reasons, (not the least of which is the caffeine). Will certainly return.
