Our house in Oak Bluffs MA is an old Victorian seaside cottage that needed a lot of work when we bought it 26 years ago. During that time, Scott Dawley has been our go-to craftsman for hardwood floors. We have never turned to anyone else. He has done four major floor jobs for us and we have always been thoroughly pleased with the work.
At first, we had to deal with several rooms on the first floor that had been opened up to make a single large space. The floor treatments in each of the original rooms were all different. It was a patchwork of hard pine and linoleum laid over hard pine in one room and plywood in another. We asked Scott to match the original hard pine throughout the space, and the resulting transformation was as satisfying as any work on the house we had undertaken to date.
About 10 years into owning the house, we gutted the old kitchen and put in a new one. It's a traditional cottage kitchen and the floor, another hard pine beauty installed by Scott, is the perfect finishing touch. His care in matching the new wood to the original wood in the neighboring dining room was painstaking. When a plumbing stack burst one winter, the floor in that dining room was severely damaged in one corner and needed replacement. This was a job that needed to be done before our first tenants arrived and Scott was there to help us out swiftly and at a fair price.
Finally, last fall, Scott installed pine floors throughout the second floor, in both the hall and bedrooms. This was something we had dreamed of doing for 25 years, and it was wonderful to see it finally accomplished. As of now, only one bedroom and the back hall remain to be redone, and we will be turning to Scott for new floors in those spaces when the time comes.
Scott does beautiful work on old houses, that needs to be said. For the quality of the work he delivers, as well as its period authenticity, his prices are more than fair. Take a look at the pictures offered here and try to imagine these spaces with vinyl or linoleum flooring, which is what was there when we purchased the house. That the place looks as it does now is largely owing to Scott Dawley's skill as a craftsman. read more
