1 Star -- Extremely Disappointing and Heartless Experience…read more My 90-year-old wheelchair-bound mother, my husband, and I have all been patients of Perlman Clinic. After what happened today, all three of us will be leaving the practice. I had an 11:00 AM appointment for my mother, but the office called and changed it to 10:40 AM, insisting she needed a 40-minute appointment. I explained that we did not need 40 minutes, but they insisted. Getting my 90-year-old mother out of the house is extremely difficult. I drove 30 minutes to pick her up, helped get her into the car, and then drove another 25 minutes to the clinic. Knowing I would be late, I called the office ahead of time to let them know. I arrived approximately 15 minutes late. My mother was still sitting in the car while I went inside to get help transferring her into a wheelchair. I explained the situation, that she was in pain and needed to see a doctor, and pleaded with them to please see her. They refused. What was most upsetting was the complete lack of compassion toward a 90-year-old, wheelchair-bound patient. The staff's response felt cold, dismissive, and aggressive. There was no attempt to accommodate the situation or show understanding of what it took to get my elderly mother to that appointment. My mother had been a patient of the medical practice Perlman took over for approximately 50 years. After decades as a patient, this is how she was treated. This is also not my first frustrating experience. I have personally waited 20-30 minutes beyond my scheduled appointment time at this practice, yet there was no flexibility when an elderly patient arrived 15 minutes late after her appointment had been changed by the office. I have also been disappointed by what I perceive as a lack of continuity and experience among some of the providers I've encountered, as well as frequent referrals to outside specialists rather than having concerns addressed directly. The front-office experience has been particularly disappointing. I have witnessed behavior that I consider unprofessional, including staff chatting about personal matters in the waiting area. Two employees, Gavin and Cezon, were particularly rude and aggressive during today's interaction. Healthcare should involve more than policies and appointment times. It should involve compassion, especially when dealing with elderly and vulnerable patients. Perlman Clinic failed my mother today. After this experience, I no longer have confidence in this practice. All three of us will be finding healthcare elsewhere.

Worst experience! I…read morehad an emergency surgery & was too weak to go home from the hospital 1) I was told Dr. Novac was my doctor while at the facility. Dr. Novac visited me once after I was admitted & barked questions at me. A couple of days later, there was confusion on my new prescriptions & I was concerned about my abdominal surgical site. I requested to talk to him again he refused to meet with me in the 11 days I was there. Husband called facility asking to speak to him & was told it wasn't permitted. (Red Flag) 2) Not once but twice, I had to correct 2 different CNA's? Nurses? about my meds being changed. In fact, I was already given meds that I wasn't supposed to take & I brought it up but was told I was mistaken. The young man who dispensed the meds, double checked & later apologized. The 2nd time it was a nurse, she argued with me, went out & grabbed the blister pack of pills to prove she was right & I had to point the name of meds on package & show her she was calling the meds by the wrong name! That was where the confusion was, both meds started with the same 2 letters. Scary! These are supposed to be professionals. 3) In 11 days, I was moved THREE times to 3 different rooms! I'm supposed to be resting to get stronger to go home. In all fairness, I initially requested to be moved to a quieter spot. The door to the rooms are generally left open & I had a light shining in my eyes all night long plus was in a very noisy busy area & they did move me in a day or 2. I was so grateful. This room was more quiet But every time the bathroom door was opened the stench of MOLD was super strong. I noticed there was a hole in the drywall under the sink & towels wrapped around pipes under the sink. One day, I had to let a cna know there was water on the bathroom floor which was mopped. Safety Issue! A few days later!! I was moved yet again. 3) In each room there are 3 beds. 1 bathroom. WARNING! It is not unusual for your roommate to be a sundowner. Be prepared for screaming and disruptive behavior all night. Nurses also come in the room at all hours to change their diaper and of course the lights go on & disrupt any sleep you might get. They are not quiet, either. I can't begin to tell you how anxious & stressed I became. Even with earplugs lights being shined all hours was so disruptive to sleeping. 4) Physical therapist & occupational therapists were very nice. However, I was super weak, had to use a walker, just had abdominal surgery & after a couple of sessions, I was so sore that I had to take tylenol and place ice on my abdomen for a few hours for 2 days. Knowing this, they continued to nudge me to do the exercises until I mentioned it to the head of the department in passing, then the exercises did become lighter. I was told by both therapists at different times I should have told them I was in pain during the session. But I tried to to tell them the discomfort did not happen during the sessions. Knowing how weak I was plus just having abdominal surgery possibly from the beginning warranted a gentler approach. 5) I had noticed that some "problem patients" would use the call button repeatedly for the nurses with stupid questions, etc. They were eventually ignored. But there is something so disturbing about hearing someone yell "NURSE" sometimes for hours. I was so stressed out. I was determined to be a good patient while here. It was clear to me that this facility was extremely understaffed. But ONE day I really needed to speak to a nurse. ONE DAY out of 11 days I pushed the nurse button only to be told the nurse would be right in. An hour later, I pushed the button & was told the nurse just had her break but would be right in. An hour later I tried again and was told yet another excuse. Nurse never came, I gave up and the next morning she came in to see what i wanted the night before without much interest. Very disappointing & frustrating. 6) Not always, but for the most part the food was less than cafeteria food. Some meals were ok. You fill out a meal form when you get there. I tried cold cereal for breakfast & it upset my stomach. I told 2 different people and also filled out another form but continued to get the food I couldn't eat. Sometimes, my roommate got my food by mistake and I got theirs. That's my experience. I hope it helps someone. In my case I was discharged from the hospital unexpectedly & my husband was contacted by a social worker or insurance agent (?) & was told I was going to La Paloma. This all happened within a couple of hours. Knowing what we know now, check with your insurance & see which facilities are covered. And if possible check the reviews. This was our first experience with a nursing facility and I'm not sure if they are all this bad, but it was a horrible experience.

I rarely write negative reviews, but after repeated experiences with Dr. John Clancy, I feel…read moreobligated to share what happened, particularly because elderly patients and patients who are not fluent in English deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. My 74-year-old mother recently moved from Canada to San Diego, and we have been rebuilding her medical care here from scratch. English is not her first language, and I routinely accompany her to appointments to make sure she understands her medical care and can communicate her concerns properly. We have seen Dr. Clancy multiple times, so this review is not based on one unpleasant encounter. Unfortunately, we have repeatedly experienced the same dismissive and unwelcoming behavior. Our appointments have felt extremely rushed, often lasting only approximately 5-10 minutes. When we ask questions, we have experienced sighing, visible frustration, eye-rolling, and responses that made both my mother and me feel as though we were an inconvenience rather than patients seeking medical care. Today's appointment crossed a line for me. My mother was trying her best to explain an issue concerning her daily blood-pressure medication. During the conversation, Dr. Clancy rolled his eyes, removed his glasses, looked directly at me and, referring to my mother's English, said words to the effect of: "When she speaks English, it makes me frustrated and I don't understand." I found this extraordinarily disrespectful and humiliating. A 74-year-old woman struggling to communicate in her second language should never be made to feel embarrassed for trying to explain a medical concern to her physician. There are professional and compassionate ways to handle a language barrier. Showing visible irritation toward an elderly patient is not one of them. What makes this more concerning is that today's experience was not isolated. We have left previous appointments feeling rushed, uncomfortable and unwelcome as well. Today simply reached the point where I could no longer remain silent. We will be finding my mother another primary-care physician. I also intend to formally report our experience through the appropriate channels because I believe elderly patients, immigrants, and people with limited English proficiency should be able to seek medical care without being made to feel ashamed or burdensome. I strongly encourage families, especially those caring for an elderly parent who may need additional patience or help communicating to consider our experience when deciding whether this practice is the right fit for them. Respect and compassion should be the absolute minimum a patient receives in a doctor's office.

I found a new local PT and we did more exercises in my initial consult than I did in 3 days at Scripps. Also scheduling is a nightmare, over 3 weeks the best I could get is 4 appointments, that's basically 1 session per week! OVER BILLING: Kara their billing coordinator will not take responsibility for billing issues and…read morehas alienated me over $50 because she won't fix their issue with Aetna. Aetna pays NCFMG over $500/visit and each visit I paid my PCP copay of $20. Yet the billing went through as if I saw a specialist ($45 copay) and I only saw a PA, plus North Coast doesn't have specialist they only do Primary Care. This was all because the doctors were listed incorrectly on the bill sent to Aetna. So I called Kara a few times, and I called Aetna a few times and then I put them on a conference call together, and then I followed up with Aetna several times to make sure they were fixing the issue. So after about 4 hours of my time and Kara blaming Aenta and Aetna blaming her I had to give up. And I had a final call with Kara and said there is no way I am paying the $50 because this was billed wrong, just on principal I can't and won't pay it. I can't believe I am ending a 10 year relationship with NCFMG who gets paid $500+ every time I visit over $50 I was wrongly charged for, that is brilliant customer service and a fantastic business model. Note for NCFMG if you even read these reviews: PA Noel and PA Morrison are setup incorrectly with Aetna. They had 2 profiles, one with UCSD and one without. Aetna billing uses the one without which makes them unrecognized so they bill as a specialist. So why don't you call Aetna and fix it before you have more patients leave you over erroneous billing.

In the past it would take me months to see my PCP. This was a big improvement. Everything, from lab work requests to accessing clinical notes and instructions is automated in their system, so there's no hassle. On the day of my appointment, I was pleased to find plenty of parking, even on a busy weekday afternoon, which is always a plus. The clinic looks amazing and they've clearly made major renovations. The space is bright, modern, open, and spotless, with an inviting atmosphere. The staff were professional, warm, and attentive. From the receptionists to the medical assistants, everyone made me feel welcomed. During my appointment, Dr. Kakimoto addressed all of my questions and concerns with patience and detail. Even though the visit lasted only about 30 minutes, I left feeling reassured, informed, and optimistic about my health. I also love the reminder texts and emails! So helpful especially when you have so much going on. All your clinical notes are available in their patient portal app for easy access as well as all your medical records, tests, and more. Suggest they write down things to remember better. They also need to be in the dining areas and stay when meals are served unless an emergency occurs. The food for the most part is deplorable due to a lack of supervision. Especially weekends. They need constant supervision wherein the company including the board of directors need to invest in another head chef in addition to what they have. They don't pay attention to detail most of the time. I would have only 1 to 2 meals a week that would be good. I would give the employees a language test before hiring. The administrators including admit and discharge areas are outstanding. I would suggest that instead of having the discharge review board on just Wednesday's they do this on all weekdays like the hospitals and other rehabs do. It would help if they told all the patients their disposition and intentions to clear up a lot of misunderstandings as it is the patients rights to know that as long as they are lucid.. The Doctors are mostly hospitalists and they do take the time to discuss their intentions with the patients. I had Dr. Bertani and he did a fantastic job getting me back to health on several occasions. The physical therapists are outstanding. They see all kind of injuries and are well trained to help each situation. I don't believe they need any improvement from what they do. Helpful and caring is their motto. Occupational Therapy also helpful and excellent. I believe once a patient displays they can successfully do things on their own they don't need to go over and over the same things and waist time spend it on patients that need it the most.
