TL;DR: triple check your insurance and Davis' network status before scheduling anything with them. Davis will tell you they are in-network when they are NOT!

I had high hopes for this dental office, but I will not being going again.
I checked Humana website for a dentist in my area and in my network, and several dentists at this office appeared. Reading reviews, I settled on a dentist at the office and called to make an appointment.
The receptionist asked if I had insurance and I told her Humana. She said they didn't take Humana. I said I found the name of the dentist on the Humana website. She said they only take PPO not Medicare or Medicaid, and I said I have PPO. She took down my insurance information and said she would call and let me know if it looked like it wouldn't be covered with my plan. We made an appointment.
I showed up to the appointment, checked in at the front, and filled out the paperwork. I was never asked for my insurance card, but I did write the information in the paperwork.
I was led back by the hygienist, and she asked if the receptionist had showed me the price breakdown. I said no, and she left and the receptionist came to the exam room and showed me that my portion would be $209. I was confused, because I thought my insurance covered evaluations, x-rays, and cleanings. She said typically they will cover 70-80% and this is the remaining amount that is my responsibility. Against my better judgment, I signed the paper and the hygienist came back and did the evaluation and X-rays.
The dentist I had requested (that was listed on the Humana website) was still with another patient and a different dentist came in to see me and talk to me. It was recommended I get two "deep" cleaning sessions. I was told to talk to the receptionist again. She showed me a paper for the first of two sessions. The price was $460 with $0 insurance coverage. She said I could go ahead and schedule or check with my insurance to see if I can get more coverage.
I decided on the latter, because it didn't seem right.
Before I left, I requested a printout of the services I had received and paid for already. When I got home and checked my insurance, it does indeed cover evaluation, cleanings, and X-rays. I called Davis Dentistry to ask about the discrepancy, talked to two different people, got put on hold, then was told they would call back in 30 minutes after billing was able to look into it. This was 3 hours ago.
I finally just called the office back and was told their billing department contacted Humana and the office slightly adjusted the price on the X-rays as a courtesy but not on the evaluation. She said none of their doctors are fully In-Network for Humana and there would always be an out-of-pocket expense for Humana customers. I told her this should've been explained to me when I first made the appointment and gave my insurance information. She recommended I call Humana.
I called Humana, explained the situation, and the rep asked for Davis Dentistry's phone number and called them while I waited on hold. The rep came back and told me that their list of In-Network dentists should not have included Davis Dentistry and needed to be updated, but that Davis Dentistry knew that my costs would not be covered and failed to tell me when I made the appointment. So now I will mail my invoice to Humana, wait several weeks, and get a reimbursement for the $209 I paid today.
Both companies are at fault, and I cannot recommend either. But I will say that Humana did more to fix the situation than Davis. If they knew I'd have to pay out of pocket and didn't tell me, it just seems like a money grab. I don't appreciate it, and I encourage you to make damn sure they are 100% in your network, not a little in network or whatever she tried to say whenever I asked about the money I had to pay. Total headache and waste of time and money. read more
