Davis Cards and Games is a great place to get board games, trading cards, and build community. I've been going to their weekly Riftbound night for a couple of months and always have a great time when I go. There's plenty of other events whether it be Magic, Pokemon, DnD, or any number of other games. I highly recommend this store for anyone who is interested in getting into a trading card game or just finding a group of people to play with. Additionally, the play area is in a slightly separate area from the main storefront which I think makes it more approachable if you are just shopping and if you're in the play area it feels like a place you can hangout. read more

We were treated poorly by the lead employee during our experience today. We felt belittled and were treated in an unwelcoming manner from the gentleman working there. Additionally, the way he was talking to the young female worker was quite rude and made us feel rather uncomfortable. Went here on a whim & so glad that I checked this place out! Super glad to check up on this store, I can really tell that the owners put a lot of thought & value of building a community. As they have events throughout the month for their play station(I believe you would need to pay enter the play station). The store has a variety of board games and saw some that are locally made in the Bay Area. Which I love to see! They also sell cards games & individual cards. Something that interested me while I was here is the various gatcha machines from the gatchapon to the raffle game, when I went they were raffling mecha figurines. I bought myself Pride RPG dice set ($7 for 7 dice) I absolutely love them! The packaging was very cute & the rainbow dices are lovely. The person who assisted me was really cool & their vibe was great! They also have free buttons near the register :) Definitely will tell my friends about this place! read more

I would like to take this opportunity to give a shout out to DC&G . This is the only card store that I have come across in the last 18 months that is not scalping Pokémon. They put a limit on what you can buy, and they sell it at , or very close to, retail prices. They could bury easily give into the greed that literally every other shop that I've come across has, but they don't . I visited all the way from Stockton to see the BeyBlade tournament. The event was fully booked out. Me and my partner asked if we could just watch the event since we do not have this scene in Stockton but we weren't allowed that. The tall blonde haired employee was quick to turn down any requests made due to the multiple events taking place, which I can understand. We did look at the different items in the shop just to somehow make the trip worthwhile however we had noticed the same employee following and monitoring us. Me and my partner did not feel safe and we feel completely dejected from this experience. I have never made a bad yelp review before yet this is my first because I was thoroughly disappointed. If I were to rank my all-time favorite places to hang out, Davis Cards and Games would be at the top of that list. I have countless fond memories of visiting here every Wednesday night to play games with friends before the pandemic. And while I frequent the store far less often now due to Covid, I still go from time to time to check out the new products the store regularly puts out. They have all you could ever need from a card and game store, everything from dice sets to board games to trading cards. They even carry t-shirts and accessories (this "I heart board games" patch I've sewn onto my backpack is by far my favorite). The employees are very kind and are more than willing to help you find anything you need or give you their expert recommendations on games to buy. And if you're lucky enough to come on the right day, you might even get to pet the adorable dog who works behind the counter. I feel nothing but welcome when I walk through the doors at Davis Cards & Games. The staff were super excited to see a pack of kids ready to start D&D together. They moved locations since I first went and they've still got a great energy. Some of their items are a little expensive but I think it's worth it to support the business. I am deeply disappointed in this store. I was told by the owner manager that they would not be doing a list for a pre release of a product and would instead do first come first serve. The old school way. You know come early, stand in line, talk with others who are excited for it. Well day came. I went early 45 min before open Talked excitedly with others who came after me. About how glad we were that they were doing it this way and not doing pre order list for the people who are in the know. I was fist in line. And turns out smaller shipment then expected understandable. But still turns out there a list. I know some were received. But. Even being first even after being told by the owner that there would be no list. That it is fist come fist serve limit one. Well i was first. And well. There is a list The list is they got less then they expected. I understand that. But if u got more then one you could sold me one. I trusted the owners/ managers word. There word failed. Had 2 bad experiences with this business. First was when I came with a group of friends to try to pay for a table to utilize their board game selection. My friend called the store when they opened to ask if the MTG tournament would affect tables available for board games. The employee he spoke to said it would be no problem, however when we arrived to pay for a table we were told by a different employee that we would have to give up our table in favor of anyone in the tournament who wanted it. Which upon further questioning also meant people playing friendlies after losing in the tournament as well as friendlies after the tournament. My friend brought up his concern about paying for the table only to be kicked out later, as well as calling before hand. The worker just gave him a very sideways "yeeeeahhh" and also answered "no" when asked if we would get our money back if kicked out from our table. This prompted another worker to roll their eyes and stare at the rest of our group of 3 with his arms crossed. We decided to just cut our losses and leave because the last thing we wanted was to pay for a table only to get kicked out. The second bad experience was when I pre-ordered a Pokémon elite trainer box. I was excited to get back into the tcg and figured I'd treat myself to an elite trainer box. Amazon and eBay came out cheaper however I decided to give them another shot and support local business. I pre-ordered and selected to pay in store but something came up in my personal life which meant I couldn't make it to the release event. I emailed the shop my concern and if they could hold my pre-order for a few days until I was back in town and the worker who emailed me back said it would be fine. I was checking my order confirmation weeks later and was shocked to see that my order was cancelled despite the release being a little over a week away. I didn't get an email nor was I reached out to about the order being cancelled so again I cut my losses and just bought it off a local game shop elsewhere that had an eBay store for cheaper. Seeing as this is the only local game store in Davis with an active TCG scene, I really wanted to support them. However upon seeing other low rated reviews, I found other customers who had similar experiences. The last thing I wanted was to not support my local game store however it's hard to give support when none was given to my friends and I in the first place. read more

Just took my son and his friend to the VR Escape Room. Very nice facility and the kids had a great time. The Dragon Tower game was challenging enough to keep a 10 and a 12 year-old super engaged for 45 minutes. I moved to this town about 2 months ago. I was really hoping to have an enjoyable local game store. I entered into a Warhammer tournament and took second. I won a prize, but it was completely unusable for the army I played. I asked the store if they would be willing to give me store credit instead of the prize and was told I either had to take the prize or take a hike. Later that day, a message was posted by the owner into the public group chat about the experience, specifically referencing the interaction. I felt very called out by this. The general customer service over the last 2 months has been uninviting One of the employees with a large beard and glasses makes coming to the store relatively abraisive. He is loud and not very friendly despite my attempts to be kind and build rapport. I nearly stopped going to the game store in my first week because of him. The woman with a half shaved head is not very approachable either. And was the tournament organizer. The tournament was never fully explained to me, and when I asked for clarification, I was always met with hostility.Many of the employees had no clue how it was run. The game store is loud and has a bird that will scream most of the day, which made me not want to play for extended periods. Games and paint value are on the more expensive side and 5$ per entry is a lot on the wallet if you want to go frequently. There are a lot of great stores in the Yolo area for better. Try Hobby Badger and Hammerhead just to name a couple. read more

I have mixed feelings. Overall the store is nice, and they charge MSRP for cards. But some of the staff is... Not the best. Being told I need to leave my small backpack styled purse behind the counter is completely unacceptable as a middle-aged adult. I am not a child. I have credit cards/money/ prescription medication on me. My bag is clearly a purse, something small and compact, yet inconsistent training with employees leads to some people demanding I leave it and some people not even being bothered. Overall, I do think the store is trustworthy with not sorting through and trying to find hits out of the products beforehand and selling the rest (as I have a pretty good track record buying cards from them). I just really, really wish they would work on training the staff more consistently. read more

I've always been a little intimidated by Davis Cards & Games because I assumed that everyone in there knew more than me about all things games related and would judge me for knowing very little. While they definitely know more than me in that realm, but they were kind, courteous, and patient as I looked around and asked questions. I went in just took look at some dice and they let me feel all of them (let's be real, all I was looking for was sparkly dice WHICH THEY HAD) and talked to me about all the options. On top of that they had SO MUCH MORE than I thought they did. They had like 80 different sets of dice but just shelves and shelves of board games. I don't even know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. Anyway, Davis Cards & Games is awesome. They have tons of events in their store for all different types of games. Ok we make a point to go as often as possible. My daughter (10) loves Pokémon! The guys at the store are always so nice and welcoming! When she has questions they always answer with a good attitude and make her feel important and special. Seriously every time we have gone they have been so darn sweet and helpful. Shop independent and shop local! This is my favorite place to buy board games and jigsaw puzzles. I needed some suggestions for a new family board game to play over the holidays and the staff here had terrific advice for me. I came away with a new version of Settlers of Catan and two unusual jigsaw puzzles. Their puzzle selection is terrific with high quality brands and designs you just can't find at the big box stores. Their website makes it easy to browse and even order in advance. Super friendly and helpful owner and staff. Easy parking, too. And, stop by the Upper Crust Bakery next door to pick up a latte and pear tart. read more

This store has a decent selection of card games. However, their service was horrible. I was never greeted any of the times I've visited this store. Something so simple as that goes a long way, but it never I occurred. My fiancée previously spoke with the owner and was told that at an upcoming Magic release it would be a first come first served basis, with the exception of a couple staff buying some. He got to the store before they opened on the day of release, there was no line, and then was told there was none for release/sale, that they got a smaller shipment than they expected, and all were spoken for. They would not give more information until the manager arrived in person, so we waited. And then 20-25 minutes later were told there's none available. We spend a lot of money and time on games and at shops such as this. This is by far the worst experience of them all- There was no accountability or answers when there's errors. They will not be getting our business (time nor money) any longer and we will let our friends in this community know our experience here. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

I have come here on multiple occasions and bought several set and collector booster boxes. As well bought rare cards from them in the past. Most of the other employees, and managers have been great to work with! But the entire experience was ruined by an incredibly rude, and dismissive manager. When I asked about a price a "Damaged" card they were selling at moderately played price. I respectfully asked and pointed out the damage, where I was pointed to speak with the manager. Who was within earshot on his computer, I had to go over and request his help, where his attitude was that of I am too mighty and busy to assist someone with over a 100$ worth of cards on the counters. He then came over flicked the card around ignored me as I tried to point out the damage and said "no I won't change the price." And just walked away. Nothing else just walked off taking the card. Great store ruined by a terrible manager. If someone like his is allowed to manage, count me out of this store permanently. For a place meant to be welcoming, and open to all people, I don't know what they are doing having such a toxic person in management. read more

You have to leave your backpack at the door, and you they charge you a fee to use their play area I asked the employee if they were serious about the backpack policy and she said yes. She told me there are cameras and an employee at the counter to watch. Perfect, that employee can watch as someone makes off with my bag and it will all be recorded for posterity's sake. I can't see how that will lessen the sting of having all of my stuff stolen though. read more

This has been the card store I have been waiting for in Davis my entire life! Being a born and raised Davisite my entire life, Davis has always lacked an organized place where magic players could play and compete. But the store has a lot more to offer. Size: The store is plenty large with ~4 large white long tables that players can be stationed at to play cards, open packs, or simply trade and chat. The managers/staff are always available and in eye-sight whether behind the counter or in the back (which is visible to eyesight still). Comfort: I think one of the most surprising things that hit me when I first entered the store was how clean and comfortable it was! Card/hobby stores often get bad raps for being dank and dingy places that lack proper AC and smell. But, this card store is super clean and they always run the AC on those hot Davis summer days. In addition, they have a vending machine that is always stocked with cold sodas for the patrons convenience. Organization: This store is amazingly organized and the staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The best part about Davis Cards and Games, in regards to organization, is the fact they are always maintaining their Facebook page! They always post the next weeks events in a readable manner which makes planning your next weeks fun very accessible. Conclusion: I just got back into Magic the Gathering this summer and checked out the store and since then I have attended 5 events (drafts/sealed) and I can say I love this place. The patrons are very friendly and helped me get back into Magic. Although I have not personally participated, they also hold many other events for other card games and miniatures so be sure to check this store out. They have a great stock of board games and other assorted accessories. PS: The store overlaps between two Pokestops and the store owners almost always have lures set up. read more

Went in today to see if they had some MTG Adventures in the Forgotten Realms singles that I was looking for. They had a couple and when I asked to purchase them they told me they couldn't sell it to me even though it was in the case for sale. The reason was that it wasn't in their system and that it may have been a order from TCG Player. After they checked their order system (which they said they didn't have any pending orders) they still denied me the cards for purchase. Stating that an order may come in later for it. ARE YOU F'N SERIOUS?! You guys couldn't just sell me the cards and "IF" the orders came in you could have just rejected/refunded them. I know how TCG Player works. You could have had a good guaranteed sale at that moment with me. Also, when I checked their search system computer thing they had there for a specific card it said they had one in stock. There reply was that it must have been an online order and it never took it out of their inventory. Another issue while they were looking for the aforementioned card they were just nonchalantly shuffling through cards (which most had no sleeves on them) looking for it without taking any care to keep them from getting any edge/scratch damage. It was a card they were selling for $78. This is how you alienate a customer and lose a sale. read more

I used to love this place, but the thing that prevents me from ever coming back is their customer service and the attitude of their long standing patrons in the MTG community. I don't know if I will ever visit again. Customer service wise, I visited on valentines day looking to pick up a Yu-Gi-Oh! Shadoll Structure Deck the day of its release. When I asked an employee behind the counter if they carried the product, they said, "Oh we have it, but it's not for sale for you. You had to preorder the product if you wanted to get it." This response shocked me. If the product is not available to sell, just tell me that rather than telling me that you have it, but have to be part of a select group that ordered it in advance. It is rude to your customer base to tease them that you have a product but not be able to sell it to them. Also, other times I have visited I won't be greeted or will be cut off from interacting with them because a regular came into the store and the employee wants to talk to them instead. Other times I have been ignored because the employee was playing a phone game or their Nintendo Switch and were not attentive to their store. The ways to improve your store are to have someone behind the counter that provides excellent customer service. Your employees need to recognize that just because they are surrounded by games they love that this is a business and you need to treat your customers better. The MTG community in this store is foul mouthed, rude and judgmental. I have a bag for carrying my keys that I keep next to my phone and wallet, and a MTG Commander player came up to me and said, "Move your nut sack" because he wanted to place his pizza box where my personal items were. When I started playing Yu-Gi-Oh! they belittled me and gave me dirty looks for my choice in changing card games. My friend who used to play MTG with me and joined me at the shop stopped coming because of similar behavior. I understand that DCG cannot police people's actions, but they should be made aware that they lost two customers who used to love your store to a community of adults that act and talk like children. The treatment I get from the actual children here is better than the adults that are regulars. I don't know how you can improve this unfortunately besides changing human nature. You could talk to your older patrons about it, but i don't think you have the right to enforce what other people can say in your store. read more

One of my favorite places to hangout in Davis. A real hidden gem! The shop is bright, clean and well organized. The workers are super friendly, especially the owner, Melisa. She works really hard to keep the place family friendly and girl/feminine friendly. There's 200+ board and card games they have for demo! All you have to do is give them your ID and they'll lend it out for you to try with your friends, family or date! There's snacks and drinks at cheap prices to munch on while you're playing too. I'd recommend if you're coming to hangout, that you come in the early afternoon. One thing to note though is that things can get busy Sunday night with the Dungeons and Dragons stuff and Friday night with Magic the Gathering players. But if you don't mind the noise and things being a bit more hectic and cramped, it's fine to go on those days too. Oh! 3 targets, 2 Walmarts, and 3 card shops later...I finally found a good trading card shop. Not only do they have booster packs, they have booster boxes and singles. My husband and and I just wanted to buy some Yugioh and Pokémon cards. We live in Fairfield but would definitely take the drive to get to this shop. I got 3 Pokémon celebrations cards that I was missing from my set. I'm so happy! And on the plus...MILITARY!!! Listen up...they have military discounts!!! Nice to support a business who supports military members! They also have a game play area for dueling. I saw people playing MTG, Yugioh and Pokémon. My boyfriend has been coming here for a few months to play magic the gathering with some friends. I am a boardgame person and I've been in for a few moments here and there. Well today my class got out but my bf was in the middle of playing with a friend, so I hung about and was motivated to write this review: The atmosphere is amazing. A lot of places like this can be a bit run-down or grimey. Whereas this place is spotless, plenty of tables (I mean *plenty*), framed cards, some banners, organized cards/dice/boargames/etc. They have an amazing variety of games. From the neo-classics (Pandemic, Munchkins, Smashup, Ticket to Ride, etc) to games I've never seen before (an adorable tea game I got for my mum a few weeks back which was really fun!, a Takenoko expansion, and a great selection of rpg books). They have plenty of different cards, although I can't speak to that area. They have an area dedicated to other supplies- mats, die, etc. I was so pleased that I could look around and just window-shop for two hours(!) while my boyfriend played. No one made me feel like I was loitering (which I was) and no one pushed any products down my throat. Just had a really great time hanging out and have a wishlist my arm long now of games I didn't even know existed! read more

I love this card shop! It is my favorite place to come hang out and draft. I drive over an hour to come here about once a month because I feel so comfortable here (unlike almost all other card shops I've gone to). At my LGS, I'm the only woman out of 30+ people at FNM and this store makes me so happy and thankful that it exists since there is such great representation I also love that they have so many options for draft, which I feel isn't a priority at other shops. Their discount board game section is also really fun to shop in and if I lived closer I would come during the week for some of their other events. I love the owners and Lilith Is so sweet! I'm not a Davis local (although I went to school here). I was just visiting and was with a group that felt like playing a new board game. I had called and asked to see if they had Splendor but they no longer carried it. But the guy on the phone sounded nice and they probably had a nice selection so we decided to drop by. I was pleasantly surprised that they had a really good variety of games like Pandemic, King of Tokyo, Munchkin, Carcassone (?), and Mysterium (which I was super excited about). The front desk guy was also super nice and helpful and added that we could even play in the in-store copy if we wanted. But I just ended up buying it then. I also really appreciated that we rolled in and even though we had an obvious mission, we easily could've been there for no reason yet the employees were ready to help and make suggestions. I wouldn't say that the rest of my party are the gaming type and I've had experiences with other card and game shops shunning me or just being plain condescending because I didn't quite know how Magic drafts worked, or didn't seem like their usual demographic of clientele but I never felt awkward or out of place here. Definitely a great environment in which you could easily make some friends. In fact, knowing that my boyfriend loves Magic, I might convince him to visit this shop sometime again, even though we live all the way in Livermore. Plus, they have an adorable doggy. This shop is super chill, and a great place to kick back. Luis really knows his stuff, and is generally a fun, friendly, and all-around pleasant guy. From what I've seen, he's happy to answer questions and address customer concerns, which helps set this shop apart from other similar stores in the Davis area. I've gone several times for Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments, and have had pretty positive experiences. Luis is pretty good about staying in touch with Konami so that OTS packs are available, and having decent prize support is always appreciated. The players here are all really chill and sociable, and are always happy to provide guidance to more inexperienced players. Overall, this store just has great vibes, and I'd recommend stopping by if you're ever looking for a decent card shop. read more
