Any squirrel or dog and sometimes human that passed us by would lead to a huge explosion. Multiple times I had neighbors come outside to ask us if everything was okay. It got to the point where I was driving about 20 minutes to abandoned parking lots and other areas where I knew I wouldn't run into anything while walking him. I knew he needed training - and fast. I was comfortable with Emily from our first consultation. It was evident to me that she had deep knowledge of dogs and their psychology, she was professional, and I could tell she loved dogs. She took on the challenge of training Jabu with no hesitation and our lives are so much better for it. He was gone for several months because his reactivity was so bad, but I never felt in the dark about what was happening. Emily always sent me pictures and videos of his progress, and she responded quickly to questions. Once Jabu was trained, it was time to train me. During our lessons together in the handover process, Emily continued to be professional and patient .. even as it took me a while to learn the commands and how to handle Jabu. She shared so many memories and stories of Jabu over the months... something I deeply appreciated, as I missed him so much while he was gone. Every time we went for our lessons, Jabu was excited to see Emily again. He would run to her, tail wagging, ready for some love. I could tell he really felt comfortable with her, trusted her and loved her, and that she loved him and cared for him as though he was her own. Honestly, I think he might even miss being at training school!!! As for his behavior... WOW. What a miracle. I used to turn into a track athlete and run in the opposite direction any time I saw anything that moved. Now, I walk with Jabu at a leisurely speed because he's focused on me and not on hunting other four legged creatures. The dog that used to blow up at dogs 100 feet away can now sit two inches away from another dog... with no reaction. Today, we walked past THREE dogs at once... and nothing. It's incredible honestly and I could not thank Emily enough. I am so grateful to have found Emily and the rest of her team (who were always so kind when I visited the office and seemed to love Jabu too - thanks guys!). Without them, I would still be driving to abandoned parking lots and sheltering Jabu inside as much as possible. Instead, now I'm looking forward to one day taking him on my hikes with me because I know he can handle it. Thank you thank you THANK YOU Emily for training Jabu and allowing us to have a healthy and happy life together. To anyone who is considering working with K9.... I tried to schedule additional home visits with the trainer but first, he had excuses to not come over and after a few more times he stopped replying to my messages.

He ultimately had a degenerative brain disease which explained his behavior and matched what the trainers had been seeing. Instinct not only has experience with difficult cases but they specialize in them. I learned more than I thought possible through them. They saw the best in my boy and have helped me heal. Yes, this is pricy, relatively speaking- yes, results may not be instant; yes, the trainers will be honest with you about your dog and the dynamics in your life that may be impacting things. The idea is to coach the owner while training the dog so that the frequency and intensity of training decreases over time, thus the price not only goes down over time but pays itself back on feelings of confidence, safety, and in having a team to back you up for life. I would hope that pet insurance is something that owners have looked into. Trupanion in particular has an excellent behavioral package. Unfortunately adopting a dog is not as simple as "with a good home and love, any dog can become a wonderful pet." Genetics and upbringing have to with it. Places like Instinct understand this and are essential and unique. They don't shame their owners or judge the dogs, it is what it is, and what a relief to have an outside pair of eyes help out, because as everyone reading this knows, by the time you look for a place like this you're feeling emotionally spent, scared, and hopeless already. We traveled hours to get there and don't regret a second of it.

Our main goals were to address poor manners when people came over (jumping/barking), poor leash manners (pulling/leading the walk/leash aggression for one of them), and all around general behavior training. We wanted, and needed, help to rectify these things before our son became truly mobile. We emailed Pat on a Friday night and he called the next day. We spoke for over an hour and he reassured us that things would be okay. We scheduled a training session for later that week and haven't looked back. He is an incredible teacher; he took the time to learn about our dogs, our family dynamic, and what our hopes were for the training sessions. He began teaching us right away and showed us how to get into the minds of our dogs. We are five sessions in and there has been such a vast improvement already. We are currently working on walking both dogs and pushing the stroller - a dream of mine - that is soon to be a reality. We genuinely look forward to each session and getting to hang with Pat. Our pack was definitely out of whack but Pat has been instrumental in teaching us how to teach our dogs and reframe our thinking. I said that might be an option and asked if I could see one. "Oh no, we don't let the public in there are pictures online." I asked her if she was serious and thought that I would just drop my dogs in a place site unseen and leave them. She responded with an attitude that people do it all the time. I asked her " assuming she had a pet" as a pet owner, would you just leave your dog in a place that you have only seen pictures of? Are you kidding? I can't understand how any responsible pet owner would drop their dog off in a place that they were not able to see with their own eyes. What a disappointing first encounter with River Pet Resort. In my mind, If you are a well run, properly staffed, legit and clean business you should want nothing more than to encourage potential clients to see your facility and show them around. Seems shady to me. Anyone who accepts the pictures on line as confirmation that they are leaving their pet in clean and safe environment should probably not be a pet owner. Would you leave your child in a facility that you have never seen before but was told there are pictures on line? I would hope not!
