This is the most magical and comprehensive art supplies store I've ever seen. If you can't find something here, then it doesn't exist. So many nooks and crannies filled with excellent art supplies - from student/beginner level to premium artist grade. A lot of items were 10% off, some more of a discount so very affordable. The store is run by a wonderfully sweet couple and the staff is very knowledgeable. I heard a customer asking for something obscure and the staff took them right to it, told them how to use it and suggested other items too. You can get lost in the aisles and really get your creative juices flowing. Or come in for something specific. The aisles are very organized by type of product. If you need any art supplies, or even if you don't, this is a treasure and a must visit. read more

This place has everything, I mean everything! I've driven by this place so many times and on a chilly drizzly day I decided to finally pop in. At first is seemed like your run of the mill art supply store, but as I ventured in I could see it has so much more to offer. Thank goodness Pirate waited in the car as I literally went isle to isle making notes in my head. I picked up a few ceramic tools, glass paint, a black book and 7 new black pens by several different companies in several different widths. But I also stopped to look at different viles, bottles and containers, model train accessories, velum paper, sun photo developing kits, oil sticks in a rainbow of colors and paint pens. It was a super fast visit, but I must go when I have some real time to look at each section. Let's not forget that super helpful staff, whom approached me three times to ask if I needed help. This place is magical, and I am not even an artist. I had a large, delicate painting that came from Australia. Fernando understood exactly what needed to be done to stretch it. I picked it up yesterday, and the quality of the work is amazing and way more than I expected. It was stretched so professionally that I do not need a frame and could place it on the wall right away. Wow, everyone was friendly, accommodating, and professional. Plus, I had the painting back in just a few days. I called all around for price quotes and Fernando's was the best. And other places said it would have to shipped off and it might take weeks. David Art Center is a place to visit for so many reasons that it would be foolish to go anywhere else. There is a lot going on in this store! I felt very overwhelmed looking through the shelves. Not a bad thing because the employees are very nice and swiftly help you find what you're looking for. I wish this store was in my neighborhood!!! It has everything more. The staff is super helpful and positive. I was there for R&F oil pigment sticks, which you need to see in person to judge the color as the chart is off a bit. I could have dropped a thousand dollars in this store easy. I really had to control myself. Oh the brushes I could have bought!!! If you are an artist or a crafter this is a must go. You can thank me later. It's the best art store in the city. There used to be a number of options in our town, and they've sort of come and gone. This one is been around for a while. I like the family that runs it, and the staff are helpful in order knowledgeable as well. and there is a professional discount, that I take advantage of as a professional artist, and maybe even student discounts, though I'm not sure. Every time I go, whether I'm there for one thing or a handful of things, I can't help but browse and explore the possibilities of different creative pursuits. A little pricier than what you'd see at one of the national art supply chains... but that makes sense because David Art Center is not a national art supply chain. They're locally owned, family operated, and a great place for all of your artistic needs. The store itself is huge, and has at least a little something for every type of artisan/crafter. They carry an extensive range of drafting supplies and also do custom framing and easel rental. I'm a fan because they carry a wide selection of linoleum blocks and ink (printmaking is my latest all-consuming hobby) in a wider range of sizes/quality/colors than what I've found at Michaels (the only other art store option out in Metairie). The staff is super knowledgeable, too, and always ready to provide help in case you're the sort who can't tell the difference between Bob Ross and Dick Blick. Which you're not, right? Come on. I love to "buy local" but buying local definitely doesn't come cheap. I frequent David's because it is close to my house and I really do like to support small business. BUT the prices are pretty outrageous. Paints I normally get at Michael's are about $1.50 more expensive here. They do have an extensive line of paint brushes and things you may not be able to buy at Michael's but I would try first as you will pay for them. The staff is friendly and they do seem to know what they are talking about. They also offer small classes for some things like silk screening and graphic art. That's kind of cool. Also, they have a framing section that seems to always be busy, but again expensive. read more

I love this store. The employees are all really knowledgable and eager to give you a hand picking the right tools for your trade. I've dealt mostly with Jacob. He's helped me to pursue new mediums, given me recommendations on products, and he's always patient. But everyone who works here is well equipped to give you a hand making a selection, not just Jacob. This place is AWESOME! My wife and I purchased 2 beautiful canvas paintings in Jackson Square and needed to get them stretched so we could hang them. First we went to Michael's with a 70% off coupon and what we paid at David's Art Center for both paintings was cheaper than 1 at Michael's with the coupon. The service is excellent, very helpful and friendly . I will not waste my time at Michael's again and will return to David's Art Center for any art related needs. read more

I love supply stores of any kind: office, home, art, you name it. Wandering the ailses and checking out all of the merchandise is just so enjoyable to me. David Art supply was like a personal mecca with all of its brushes, palattes, easels and canvases. They stocked everything you could ever need when it comes to art. While they did have some sales going on, things were definitely on the pricier side. Sennelier soft pastels were almost $5 per pastel! The store is local, though, so at least you're supporting local business. Look for the funky yellow building off Vets. read more

New location in Fat City is about 4 times the size of their former Veterans Ave. store. I used to get a touch of claustrophobia before, but now I've got elbow room. This is the largest art store that i've found in the new orleans metro area, so far. (i have a few more to visit before i can make this claim. In comparison to the ones that i'm used to (san francisco bay area) this si smaller, but the selection is just as comparable. they give student discounts. they're really friendly, and helpful. I made a comment about on of their trianlge,s that i'd love to get on in a 30 60, in the 18 inch, but wouldn't make sense to actaully get one. The guy behind the counter said "i'm going to order you one." please don't because i'll never buy it, i just want one. his reply, "don't worry, it'll be here for you when you do want to buy it". isn't that sweet? These guys are awesome. Called them up to see if they would ship some artist spray paint to me in Leesville, LA. They (Jacob) not only took the time to see if they could ship the spray paint but also then took the time to go through what they had and helped me find some good paper. He then got the shipping cost, which was very reasonable, and got me a total cost of the purchase. We did the transaction and he shipped me the items. Now, this happened on a Saturday and I received my items on a Monday. The spray paints where very well wrapped with the caps taken off so they didn't spray in the box and my paper was packet very well also. When you want to create your next work they have the quality goods and advice when you need to help make you a better profession or hobby artist. And yes, they may be a tad pricier than other places, but their selection and service are worth it hands down. NOT a beading supply store as advertized here (go east on the other side of the mall - 18th Street - to Gary's Craft Store for beading supplies) BUT David Art Center is the best Art Supplies store in NOLA, if not in Louisiana. HUGE and very complete selection of artist supplies, drafting supplies, wood sculpture supplies, etc. .plus a frame shop (which I have not used). 2 1/2 years ago they were in Veteran's Blvd - this move, they really enlarged and made it easier to get around inside. They also have a drive-thru covered parking for 4 vehicles, in the event of rain - and rain can ruin your new supplies. Prices are competitive but not with the big box stores - and be sure to look for discounted discontinued supplies..Cards and cash - but NO checks. read more
