The whole farm is done up in a spectacular Xmas light show complete with a shed to meet Santa & Mrs. Claus who always have a treat for the kids to take home. Just outside Santa's workshop is a free hot cocoa stand and this year they added two firepits! Wandering around the farm are a few surprises like the Grinch who startled me this year! The whole shebang is done in support of the Leduc Food Bank by donation of food or money. I just can't get over how big this has gotten complete with volunteer parking attendants to help you find a parking spot! Check out the website for each year's schedule - tends to run from end of November through first of January 7 days a week with Santa & hot cocoa on the weekends! My hubby's 94 year old grandmother lives 3 farms down the road and we are so thankful she told us about Mr. Ruel's Xmas light extravaganza 9 years ago! We haven't missed one since!

When we first started going back about 12 years ago, Santa would come out from the house and have pictures taken on the sleigh outside. They always give out fabulous treat bags for the kids, have a chat with us all and goes out of their way to make the visit really mean something special. Plus, the Grinch is never far behind.

Yes, replied the friendly young man, without even looking at a computer. "What size do you need?" My memory is that he offered three or four styles, ranging from small to large. He went straight to the flag stock and immediately retrieved the exact size that I wanted. It was even the correct shade of bluish red. (My Latvian friends tell me that many flags are produced with the WRONG shade of red. This one is perfect, according to them.) The store operator had an encyclopedic knowledge of what he has in stock. He even carries flags from countries that do not exist anymore, such as Tanganyika or Burma or Ceylon and others.

They've got everything from paperweights and Zen water fountains to a jewelry and figurines. What I liked the best about this shop was the wide selection of kites they have, and all kinds of flags. They don't just stock national flags but a wide variety of thematic ones for front lawns or store fronts. They sell giant slot machines and video lottery terminals and there's a side room that's chalk full of fireworks, from your smallest sparkler to your most extravagant sky production. This is a fun shop to poke around. It's in a more industrial area of the city, where most other stores sell flooring or piping. There's lots to look at, if slats of granite and linoleum aren't your thing.

We were under a bit of a time constraint but somehow managed to pack in some street hockey, curling, ice sculptures, glass blowing, a horse-drawn sleigh ride and pierogis (sooooo good). I can only imagine what we could have done with more time! Festivals like this are the reason I love Edmonton so much. It gives you a reason to look forward to winter and it forces you to go outside, even in -30 weather. Lucky for us, Sunday was bright, sunny, and fairly warm so we didn't have to worry too much about the cold but I definitely recommend bundling up if the weather isn't as nice. You're going to want to spend as much time as possible outside. Of course there are opportunities to pop inside for a bite to eat (again, the pierogis are sooooo good) or to see some live music. I can't wait for next year!

If you forgot your toque the festival was selling some, as well as Raising The Roof (a fundraiser for Homeward Trust Edmonton). I really liked this festival. My friends and I went on Saturday when it was the Ukrainian day (they celebrate Francophone culture on the Sunday). The them for the festival was fairies and orgres, which you could see in some of the snow and ice carvings, and the artwork. There were supposed to by fairy doors in the business windows along 118, but I didn't see any, which was kind of sad. It was cool checking out the festival, from the snow scultptures outside to the performances and the art inside the Nina (a gallery I hadn't been to). The festival is free to attend, but they accept donations and if you wanted to get any food that was a purchase as well. We went on the really cold day of the festival, but there are heaters outside and lots of places to warm up. We were sad that we had missed the actually deep freezer races by about 10 minutes. Maybe another year I'll catch that. I love the festivals that Edmonton has and the fact that we continue to have festivals all year long, not just in the summer. Winter isn't my favourite time of year, but it's fun to get out and spend some time outside and check out an awesome festival like Deep Freeze.

It's recently been redone, so everything is in great condition. It's got a lot of pathways lined with plants and grassy areas to wander around. While I wouldn't necessarily describe it as a sculpture garden, there are a number of pieces. Since going to art galleries and museums has fallen on a spectrum from impossible to ill-advised, Borden Park's sculptures gave me a chance to see some art while I'm in Edmonton. The centerpiece of Borden Park is the natural swimming pool. Unfortunately, this is closed for the 2020 summer season. More importantly, the washrooms are also closed for the season. If you have a strong bladder and/or are prepared to pop a squat somewhere (there are plenty of trees and bushes for privacy) there are lots of nice picnic areas. You already have hand sanitizer with you, right? There are some very cool looking playground structures, which are open. There are groups of tables of various sizes, some of which are wheelchair accessible, as well as ample grounds for picnics while conforming to social distancing guidelines. There's a save-on-foods on the other side of the parking lot in case you don't want to carry picnic foods from home.

I've been exploring a few different trails in Edmonton and this one is the closest to my house, so it's super convenient to walk at any time of the day. The trail goes along the top of the hill at Forest Heights and gives a great view of the city skyline, we actually watched the Canada Day fireworks from here and it was the perfect spot if you don't want to go all the way downtown. The path then takes a dip and you follow the road down to 98 Avenue and the Cloverdale area. Along the way, there are paths off to the side to take you down to the water or up to the main road. It looks like lots of keen cyclists use this path as they have created some cool additional trails with their tracks. You are quite secluded as the trees on either side completely hide the walkway from the main road. There are picnic tables and benches to stop and rest along the way too. Once at the bottom you are in Cloverdale and come to Central River Valley Park which appears well maintained and has a statue of George Francis Hustler. Nice spot for a rest, or continue on to Henrietta Muir Edwards Park. Or like me, turn back and tackle the hill back up! This walk has a mixture of couples out a stroll, keen runners, cyclists and even older ladies out to keep fit. I wouldn't take a little kid on this trail as it is very steep in parts.

I've been here over the years for Trappers games and more recently an Edmonton Prospects game. I've also been here for a party during the World's Masters Games (at which I was volunteering) and the field is a really neat concert venue as a result. It's perhaps not as big as a bigger ballpark but it is certainly very useable and useful. Having sat in box seats as well as in the regular stands I can appreciate both. The field is parking and transit accessible. I like to just walk down to it from downtown as it's a nice walk. While I'm not a huge fan of baseball, I will admit that one's enjoyment of a game here really has more to do with who one is with than the game itself for the most part. I think that the more dated aspects of the park would become renewed if we again had a higher league ball team playing here.

On Canada Day, you can stay past the game to watch the fireworks. There is a concert .in between the two events. The food here is okay. It has switched to Remax field and I think that this is why the menu changed as well. There are fewer choices than before. I want to try to nacho poutine next time I am there. There are a variety of seats to choose from including lower bowl where you sit on field level, balcony seats, nose bleeds, and bleachers. I believe the field seats have a private bar and you can order your food instead of standing in line. We go to games as often as we can
