We blundered into this art center and had a pleasant surprise. We were warmly greeted by the…read moredocents at the front desk, who explained that they were featuring high school art. I replied that I had taught art, and was eager to see the work of the local students. The show took up the entire art center, which was spacious and well lit. I was very impressed by the talent and expression of the students, as well as by the creativity of the assignments given the students by their teachers. Each artwork had a statement accompanying it that displayed thought and reflection by the artist. The docents had also shown us a book sale, and we got a great book on art technique for our grandson, who is enjoying his art class. I also browsed the lovely art clothing in the gift store, created by local artists. The bonus to the visit was that there was a vintage care show being held in the parking lot adjacent to the art center, and we were able to mingle with the owners of the vintage cars and remember past trips in our autos!!

Okay, so I have to admit--this wasn't really something I would normally go out of my way to see. I…read moredidn't realize just how young these artists were--grades 9 through 12 from around the Coachella Valley. But hey, I'm an artist myself and I LOVE art, so I thought, why not. And wow... what I discovered really stopped me in my tracks--but not in the way I expected. The talent was defnitely there. These kids are wildly creative. But the theme across so much of the artwork was intense. Dystopia. Destruction. A future full of chaos, hopelessness, and AI taking over everything. A future where they don't see a place for themselves. That hit me HARD. I walked through this exhibit thinking--what KIND of messages are we sending our youth. Instead of sparking hope and drive, it feels like they're being trained to give up before they even begin. Submitting to a world they feel powerless in, like a slave to a master. That's the energy I felt in a lot of the work, and honestly--it shook me. We should be teaching these kids to harness AI and technology for their own success. We should be empowering them NOW to build, create, and run their own businesses--because the job market as we knew it is changing fast. College degrees won't guarantee anything anymore. But digital skills, entrepreneurial thinking, creative independence--that's power. These kids are way more advansed than we give them credit for. So many are already ahead of the curve, but if we keep feeding them fear instead of freedom, we're doing them a disservice. The art was raw, emotional, and telling--but a little too fatalistic for my taste. I'd love to see a future exhibit focused on vision, innovation, and how this next generation can rise with AI--not fall beneath it. Let's shift the narrative. Let's teach them to lead, create, and thrive. Because they can. And they shoud.

I've been a member of this pottery studio for about a year and a half, and I truly can't say enough…read moregood things about it. I first discovered the studio by signing up for a class, and from the very beginning it felt special. When I initially came in to sign up, the studio itself was very open and active, which felt a little overwhelming at first. But almost immediately, a few members greeted me, gave me a tour, and made me feel genuinely welcome. That sense of warmth and community stood out right away. The class format worked perfectly with my schedule as well -- I work during the day, and the afternoon class times made it easy to commit and stay consistent. The talent in this studio is incredible. The members are skilled, generous, and always happy to offer advice, tips, or encouragement as you build your pottery and ceramics skills. It's an environment where learning feels natural and supported. On top of that, the sense of community goes far beyond the wheel -- members regularly bring in homemade baked goods, and some even organize potlucks and gatherings outside of the studio. It truly feels like a creative home, not just a place to take classes. During my time as a member, I experienced some personal hardships and had to travel due to the loss of a family member. I wasn't able to come into the studio for weeks at a time and eventually considered canceling my membership. When I came in to talk with the owner, Deric, I was prepared to take a break. Before I even mentioned canceling, he kindly offered to hold my membership while I was away. That level of understanding and compassion honestly made all the difference and is a big reason I stayed.

Silica Studios is a fantastic place to learn pottery. I took a couple of classes with Daric, and…read morehe's a patient, skilled instructor who really knows what he's doing. The members are also incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help. 10 STARS!!!!
