First visit to the new Spirits Alley location for this wine club member. I will miss the ability to BART home after partaking. ;-) A bit understaffed this past Saturday, especially with new systems, so service was a bit off. Former-teacher-now-pourer (forgot his name--sorry) was great as always, making time to explain the wine and its production. Other guy seemed a bit sluggish. First time I have ever had even a slightly negative thought about the service, so I think the issues stem from all the transitions. I don't rate the wine itself in these reviews - I'm pretty unbiased when it comes to wine... I just like to drink it... I really like the location; tucked away in the jack london area, with plenty of street parking. Also fairly accessible by BART (Lake Merritt is about 5-10 minutes walk away) They gave generous pours, and were super friendly all around, it quickly became like visiting old friends and trying a couple of new bottles of wine. Go, go, go. The staff is spectacular. They greet you when you walk thru the door and talk about the different ways you can try wines. There's an indoor tasting area and outdoor wine garden, which is pretty much a place my dreams are made of. The seating is shaded, the ambiance is quiet and calm, there's corn hole. The wine was amazing. It's so fun to talk to the people who actually make the wine right there. You can order from Nido across the way or bring food in like we did. The tasting room is year round & the wine garden is Thursday thru Saturday 12-6pm, and is over August 7th when the wine season ends (as they told me I really know nothing about wine, but they'll teach you!) Thank you to Yelp and the good people at Dashe Cellars for allowing my wife and I to come and celebrate the 8th Annual Dashe Cellars Paella Fiesta. Thank you especially to Errin (sales manager) for accommodating us. I actually won tickets to this event through yelp, and we secured a baby sitter so this was a fun evening of wine tasting, stuffing our faces in paella and watching the flamenco music/dance performances. Well executed event where the lines moved quickly and everyone was able to get a full plate of food and sample a wonderful variety of wines. We even got to sample a glass or two right out of the barrel. Beautiful portfolio of Zins were being offered, along with others, but even when we were standing in the line for paella, the staff were coming around filling up everyone's glass. Love the location, the lay out, the staff and the event. Looking forward to coming back and sampling a few other selections in the near future. read more

Just like urban legend, Dashe is owned by a husband and wife combo. I love coming here because of the ambiance, friendliness of service, and the back patio area. Although they are known for their reds, they also have some whites that are surprisingly yummy also...I say surprisingly because I am a fan of reds. My choice of red here? The Comet. Every single wine is easy to drink although I did have a few that I poured out. To each their own. The tasting room is large and the teamwork behind the counter never leaves your glass dry for long. $10 per tasting and waived if you buy a bottle of wine. They have food and live music on their patio sometimes. You could buy a glass of wine and sit out in the sun. read more

My aunt and uncle are members of the wine club here so on one of our visits we stopped in for a tasting. As soon as we walked in I loved the place. It didn't have that pretentious wine tasting room feel to it. And, the patrons seemed really cool. There's nothing like going to a place and you end up hanging out with random patrons. We sampled about 6 different wines and they were all very good. We bought a bottle of the Grenache Blanc and a bottle of The Comet and had them shipped to us. When our bottles arrived there was a handwritten note thanking us for the purchase. Yes! Things like that make me appreciate boutique wineries where they don't herd you in and around like cattle. The staff was great. Julieann was amazing and made our time so enjoyable. I don't know how we can not go here again on our next visit. read more

Visiting here was like escaping to the wine country without the long trip. In the warehouse they've managed to capture that magical feeling of visiting an estate winery. They also have the last spot on the winery/brewery row which leaves them with unobstructed views of San Francisco from their outside seating. This was my second time at dashe cellars. Wines by the glass are pricey which detracts from the experience and the service is OK but not friendly like other wineries in the area. The wine patio is open now for the summer which is nice. You can order from the inside bar or the one near the patio. My friend ordered some cracker and cheese plate which came with a jar of jam. Also nice the dogs are allowed. Too many kids running around when I went though. read more

Cool winery right off the freeway. The wine itself is good and the price is right. They allow you to use your tasting fee towards a bottle. The warehouse setting is nice and they have heaters to keep it warm. The wine attendants are attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Check this place out. The reds were very good. read more

A friend introduced us to Dashe Cellars while we were in Oakland for a conference. I thought that when he said we were going to a wine tasting, it would be a drive into the countryside. Instead, it was just a few blocks from the Marriott in downtown Oakland where we were staying. Dashe Cellars is located in a nondescript warehouse district. Walk in the door, and your first site is the layout of wood aging barrels and bright stainless steel equipment filling the back portion of the space, while just inside the door there's a bar, along with some tables, for tasting. And what a great tasting experience. Errin poured our wine samples and, equally important, provided extensive background on each wine, its history, source of grapes, significant qualities, etc. He took us on a tour through several whites and reds, and what great tastes all the way around! While there, we met the owners, Anne and Mike Dashe, who were most friendly and informative as well. Dashe features non-industrial, artisan wines, created with more of a personal touch than the major producers can offer. They do not add sulfites to their wine, which some wine enthusiasts will likely consider a big plus. And I have to admit that when we got back home to Hawaii, one of my first shopping trips was to a nearby wine story for a couple of bottles of a Dashe zinfandel to savor with friends. All in all, a great way to spend a few hours when you're in Oakland. read more

Great bang for your buck. Wine tasting is $5 but if you buy wine, they waive the fee and only 3 feet away from J.C. Cellars. The woman behind the counter was knowledgeable and loved the wine she was pouring. This was the 4th stop on our tour and needless to say, some were feeling the effects of the East Bay wine. She was still very nice and patient. The monkey riding the fish is enough to make me love Dashe Cellars but I was here for the wine and wine I would taste. I was impressed with everything they had but the most memorable was their Late Harvest Zinfandel. They told us to do our JC Cellars tasting and come back for this wine right before we leave. Awaiting instructions she poured us all a glass and then presented us with 60% cocoa chocolate. Take a couple of bites of chocolate, take a couple of sips of wine, then finish chewing the chocolate. MMMMMMMM....OMG...really. It's a mouth orgasm. If you want to impress a date, get a bottle of Dashe Cellars Late Harvest Zin and a tin of their chocolate and follow their instructions. I will not guarantee you get lucky but you have just increased your chances! read more

Dashe Cellars is an amazing find in the Oakland area! One of the many local wineries that have built up a scene, separating themselves from the stereotypical "walking through the vineyards of Napa" ideal that many associate with Northern Californian wineries. Obviously, the vineyards are located in those rich and fertile lands, but the wine itself is made and bottled across these facilities surrounding Jack London Square. Dashe's warehouse has so much open space, perfect for all the giant tanks and barrels, without making the place feel cluttered. In talking with our wine tasting guide, she pointed out that the winery they shared the space with had just recently moved out (don't worry, they're still nearby, just a new space), so now Dashe has twice as much room, which they soon hope to convert part into a wine garden. The place was really clean, with the air really clear. The tasting area was also pretty spacious, perfect for groups of any size. For a lazy sunny afternoon, I was surprised there were numerous parties tasting and enjoying the wines. Lots of locals or faithful customers dropping by. My girlfriend and I were really content with our wine tasting. Our guide was really friendly, and gave us thorough explanations of the wines and for any questions we may have had. I am definitely a fan of their wine, and hope to return for more, as well as visiting more spots along the Oakland wine trail! I was looking for a place to host a corporate dinner for 75 people. I came across Dashe from yelp. They did not disappoint! Clara was very responsive and helpful. I've never been to the winery and only showed up day of the event so I was worried. However when I arrived everything was perfect and so beautiful! See pictures i uploaded. The table setting was beautiful! The string lights just added the intimate feel. The bar/wine tasting area allowed my guests to network and mingle before dinner was served. The wine was delicious and reasonably prices! Everyone loved the event! I'm so glad I found Dashe! read more

Their logo has a monkey riding a fish. Need I say more? No..but I will I liked Dashe. Our winetender was fun, upbeat and knew what she was talking about. Maybe she did, I'm lying right now because I don't know. She is the last wine server that I remember on my wine tour so, that makes an impact in my book. They give dark chocolate with their late harvest zin. Wrap it up, I'll take it! Tempting me with real chocolate and sweet wine is one surefire way to make me your bitch..at least for a moment. read more

i saw a sign on the corner of 4th & fallon with "dashe cellars" on it . when i entered this warehouse complex. i saw in front of me barrels of wine on platforms being fermented. to the right was the wine tasting bar. there was a $5 fee refundable upon any wine purchase. the '07 dry riesling mcfadden (20) was too dry for me as was the '04 iron oak ranch merlot, potter valley(26). the '04 cab alex valley was very dry. errin, the pourer, explained all the compositions of the wines and was very thorough and patient. each participant received individualized service. the finish was a '06 zin late harvest (24) which was sipped, a piece of chocolate eaten, and the zin sipped again. i skipped this one since i usually don't have any chocolates lying around since i eat them by the box, literally. they open thurs-sat 12-6p.m. the '05 zin todd brothers (32) was very smooth and that's what i settled on. wine club members get 10% off, more off on case purchases. they specialize in small batches crafting of zin, merlot, and cab wines read more

Fine, fine monkey wine, that's what Dashe is about. There is a monkey riding a fish on the label, and after a tasting here that's about as whimsical as you'll feel. I was surprised at the late harvest zin, actually liked the Merlot but wouldn't go out of my way to find it, loved the cab sauv, and loved the dry creek Zin. First tasting room I've been to where the server tasted with us! Even better is its' location near Jack London Square and on the same bar as JC Cellars. The oak barrels are stored right in the same warehouse, or rather, the tasting room is right in the warehouse - a plus for us. We loved the ZIn so much we bought a bottle. How do you not love Dashe Cellars and the monkey riding the fish? After visiting wineries around Oakland, this was one of 2 places that house multiple wineries, and they are all good! Oakland has something to give this industry. Don't overlook them! Specific to Dashe, their 2007 Zinfandel L'Enfant Terrible was incredible. The essence of a complex wine to be sure. What through us all back was the dessert wine known as the Late Harvest Zinfandel. A must with the dark chocolate. I think I will make a trip back just for this dessert wine. I bought a deal off of Living Social - $40 for 6 tastings for 2 people and 2 bottles of wine. Pretty good deal! Our server was very friendly and informative. He answered all of our questions and gave us a good deal of interesting information. I wish they had offered Merlot in the tasting. All in all, it was a pretty cool experience. A while back, wanting to bring a bit of East Bay flavor to family in Huntington Beach for Thanksgiving, I bought a bottle of one of Dashe Cellars 2006 Zins on a recommendation from Farmstead Cheeses and Wines. For months afterward, we were all thinking about the delicious wine with the monkey riding the fish on the label. Good thing Farmstead keeps a record of your purchases, because I was able to track it down again. Then I finally made it to Dashe's tasting room in Oakland near Jack London Square. After running through their tasting list, I ended up doing all of my Christmas shopping here. If you like complex Zins with many layers of flavor, you will really enjoy their wines and so will all the people on your Christmas list. Next year, give Santa a break and do all your shopping here. Plus, with all the amazing tastings, you'll have a nice gift for yourself too! read more

Disclaimer: I am not a hipster nor a typical liberal who respects people who act above them. I went to a NCIA event last night at Dashe Cellars. First of all, it was freezing..so freezing that I barely could concentrate on the speakers. Propane heaters, that are customary at most high-end establishments during the winter, would seem appropriate. Secondly, the employees tending the bar lacked customer service and common courtesy. They were snobby, pretentious, and were expecting a tip for handing me a free water from a bucket. Overall, the atmosphere inside was lackluster. Just an old warehouse with broken, unlevel concrete floors that didn't seem very "high class" to me. But like I said, maybe I don't know what is "cool" since I am not a hipster who wears women's skinny jeans and nerd glasses.. But I digress... The location of Dashe is in a very dark, depressive, and run-down area (to be fair, that describes most of Oakland). I still don't understand how it's "upper echelon" being surrounded by vacant buildings that look worse than HBO's "The Wire", garbage-laden streets, and a warning from the owner that homeless people (from one of the city's many filth-ridden encampments) could be stealing out of your vehicle? So if you're comfortable being told this is what superior looks like, maybe you should move to Venezuela. read more

Before I saw the monkey riding the fish, I saw Dashe wines at some of the best local restaurants. Sure, we see Rosenblum now and then. And you'd expect Franklin Square to share the local love. But on a visit to a fancy spot in Marin, I saw five reds listed by the glass--and two were from the East Bay. After Rosenblum was Dashe Zin. And it looked like it was popular. Located a few feet to the right of JC Cellar's tasting space, Dashe lines up an impressive array of deep, rich Zins. But I ended up buying the lightest incarnation--the L'Enfant Terrible with its light, spicy, subtle aromas and flavors. I almost grabbed the moderate-alcohol but high flavor late-harvest Zin, too, but I kept my spending under control. On a later return visit, I tried an excellent Cab that almost came home with me. As I've said before, spend money in your community. With the amazing selection of awesome wines available here on 4th St., your basic cellar is stocked. read more

Another stop on the urban wine tasting adventure. Fairly nice wine. Servers always knowledgeable. For a tasting, it's very reasonable (Only $5!), probably because he knows the juice is good and knows you'll buy a bottle. For an easy comparison of styles there's Rock Wall and Rosenblum nearby but Dashe is always a bit more balance and refined and less rambunctious. It's not as refined as say some Ridge bottlings (one of the many stops of Michael Dashe's winemaking career along with Lafite, Chappellet and Far Niete), but it's close in terms of balanced old-vine zins. Which is odd because once you see the label of a monkey riding a whale, you might not think this is serious wine. But really this place great and in terms of Cali zin rankings just behind the top echelon of Ridge and Bedrock and it's really close. They do some including a nice reisling, a delightful dry rose, and very solid cab as well as a sorta Beaujolais line called L'Enfant Terrible which are fruity and light with a bit of funk that are for early drinking. I generally like it all except the dessert wine, which I have to say tastes like raisin juice (is such a thing were possible). He's also got a tasting room in Dry Creek though have yet to check it out. I am starting to learn the difference between San Francisco and Oakland. San Francisco is out in the open working to get your attention, Oakland is a surprise spot in an industrial neighborhood. After a long weekend of family, we went to an open house at Dashe Cellars, and I was impressed. I am no oenophile so I won't try to review the wine other than to say I liked some a great deal others were only okay. But the entire event was fun. Met the chief from Incanto who was on the next Iron chef and chatted with the growers of the grapes. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, especially with how bad the Raiders are playing. read more

Most important: the people here are amazing, warm and knowledgeable. Their wines, especially their Dry Riesling and their Grenache Blanc, are beautiful. I bought seven bottles, six to take home, one to share with all my new friends. Their prices are more than fair considering the quality of their wines. We had a birthday party there. My dog was welcomed and adored. Everyone loved the Dashe facility. They made feel as if I were a member of their family. I have had the opportunity to have a nice bottle of dashe cellars at a restaurant. It was really good. Coming here for tasting was an exquisite experience as well.The staff was very knowledgable of the wines being poured. Every wine was nice and taste surprising. I really enjoyed all the wines here.
