The Gasthaus zum Piano or Das Piano as everyone calls it, is a corner fish restaurant In Meidling. Many of the fish dishes comes from the Croatian coast on the Adria (Adriatic Sea). This is def a neighborhood restaurant and though it is not in my neighborhood, it was well-worth finding - for the most part.
My rating for this restaurant fluctuated during the meal in the comfortable dining room where I sat near to the eponymous piano. My chicken noodle soup was a disappointment - it was kinda bland and just not hot enough. Chicken noodle soup should always be served hot in my opinion and not luke warm. Minus a star for that. Minus another star for service that was well only 'serviceable' but not anything to remember. But then came the main course and the reason I was there. The Goldbrasse fish course was superb - perfectly fresh, flavored, and grilled. Dalmatian (Croatian coast) restaurants in Vienna usually serve the fish whole which is fine with me as I can filet it at the table. It also to me tastes and feels more authentic and reminds me of summer holidays on the Adriatic coast. I loved my grilled Goldbrasse fish! Put a star back for a fish course so tasty. A spinach & roasted potato combo as well as a glass of Austrian Grüner Veltliner wine were the perfect accompaniments. Oh and the prices here are def on the reasonable side.
Tip - There is often live music in the evenings. I saw a flyer in Das Piano for a jazz group which performs there on some evenings. The jazz group is amazingly called the New Philadelphia Jazz Band. Well that name is another plus and hopefully I can stop by some evening when they are performing. read more
