I came to Dr. Catherwoods office after not seeing a dentist for almost 8 years and I was extremely nervous because I had a bad experience at my last dentist office. this is possibly one of the best dental offices I have ever visited, the dental assistants are super cool and friendly, the front of house staff is incredibly nice, I could sit there and chat with her for hours, and Dr. Catherwood is super funny, knowledgeable, and gentle. I am no longer scared to be at the dentist. read more

Fantastic dentist with the latest technology to improve outcomes and experience. Very concerned about patients condition and interaction. Ten stars! read more

Dr. Catherwood is my first civilian dentist after retiring from the Navy. He is patient, thorough, honest and very competent. His demeanor relaxes even the most skittish (ie me) dental patient. read more

This is my first review of any business. The procedures done on my multiple teeth has given me health issues that I never had before. (Headaches, ear ache, gum pain upper and bottom, cracked tooth, teeth sensitivity, head cold every day until the new dental work to correct the errors) Most of the work was done by the dental assistant and no record of the filling work after been in the office for almost five hours. Very disorganized and quick to take care of things. Patty was the only positive experience. Funny dentist but not funny when you have prolonged pain due to carelessness and the feeling of not very caring when you go back there. Or doesn't take things seriously. After visiting a caring, attentive, professional dentist I was told one of my teeth had a crack from the prior work. My health issues are gone. I did not mention any negative things about the work done by Dr. Catherwood's office to the new dentist. It's not my style. But I had to write this because I am a very healthy person and this experience is something that I will never forget. read more

I was seen at Dr. Catherwoods office, I could not be more pleased with my visit. The whole staff from the front desk (Patty) to the attendant in my dental room. Dr. Catherwood was just awesome. Got my tooth looked at and took care of it. I have had all my dental care done at his office since 2006, and so should you. read more

Receptionist was extremely rude. She wouldn't know customer service of it bit her in the butt. Update: her name is Patricia and apparently she is the office manager. She should be fired. No only was she rude to me when I was checking in, but then while waiting I had to sit here and listen to her be rude to people on the phone. read more

This dentist was good in the beginning. However, after two dental implants that are hurtful and loose, the very bad lower bridge and the lies about drilling three of my teeth for the lower teeth and the nasty Patti the upfront manager sending me a bill for the X-ray he did to see his rotten work, sent me a nasty bill for what he supposedly remedied, I am taking them to Dentist malpractice.. I'm sorry I ever met this liar and his inadequate staff. I was shocked. They also drop the tools on the floor. You have to wonder if they replace those with clean tools. I have to start over with someone else. Another dentist I went to after this guy told me he did a rotten job. I also got lock jaw with my implants and that is painful also. Be careful of this bunch. I know what you mean by the rudeness of Patti. The lying is unprofessional but I'm glad I got a copy of that and the implant X-ray. read more

The biggest problem with this office is Patty. She is just plain rude, and mean, if you ever have to cancel an appointment. Most importantly buyer beware! The billing is horrible, and she will under estimate services that are covered partially by insurance, in order to get the procedure scheduled. Dr, Catherwood is fine, but the last treatment he did on me created havoc on the corner of my mouth, because the procedure took so long, and it was merely replacing a crown. There are so many dentists in SD now, so I would stay away from this one. read more

Love catherwood very funny, nice and understanding, only reason I continue to go to him. But... dealing with the front desk receptionist is a nightmare, so rude hate when I have to call or get a call from the office for anything, it's a hit and a miss with her but mostly a miss, very condescending and talks to you like a child. Yes I forgot about my apt and took full responsibility, and after apologizing her response was "okay well when you figure out your schedule call us back." How she handled it was so rude and uncalled for. May not be going back after that. read more

Having a senstive tooth is a bad situation. Ever since I stepped into this dentist office my bad situation has progressively gotten worse. From the dentist treating the wrong tooth, to his dental hygientist grinding on my crown unsupervised, to the original sensitive tooth having to be pulled for lack of treatment, and now threatening me over half of the payment. There clearly doesn't seem to be any recourse for me other than denying payment which is what is done when an American is not satisfied with a product/service. Dr. Catherwood's office (Patty) will not comprimise and/or accept ANY responsibility or offer compassion. Patty will only accept full payment or it goes to collections. What an unfortunate bad situation. read more

I am extremely disappointed with Dr. Catherwood's staff. I have been a patient of his office for just over a year, and have been in multiple times for cleanings, and the like. I had a cavity filled just over a year ago, and the other evening it broke. I understand that a filling is not permanent, but it seems too soon to have an issue with one that I have only had a year. I have had other fillings in the past, and to this day do not have issues with those. However, this is not my concern. When I called to make an appointment to have it looked at, Patty was so rude. She was condescending, told me it was my fault, and overall used a tone that indicated I was not worthy of owning teeth. Newsflash: customer service is part of your job; how about an "I'm sorry, why don't you come on in and we can take a look at it." read more

Dr. Catherwood and his staff are so friendly and amazing! They always make you feel so at home! The Doc is great at what he does, and it is ALWAYS painless, quick and quality work. I love him! The only thing is, they are very busy, so you need to be on top of your appointments and book them way far out. It's worth it though. They rule! P.S. Wear your ugg boots and a sweatshirt because it's always freezing in there! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Catherwood for over 12 years. True in the early part of the year some "Gremlins" managed to get into his staff and they were TERRIBLE.. But don't fear because they are LONG gone. Dr. Catherwood is an amazing Dentist and wonderful person. I look forward to every appointment and always referr him to all my family and friends. Dr. Catherwood ROCKS. read more

Dr Catherwood is an amazing dentist. He and his whole team we're super friendly when I went in for an estimate for crowns. I found their prices to be very competitive. Case in point I saw Dr. Wu next door and his estimate was thousands more. What I never understood about dentistry is why people without insurance have to pay more than the dentist gets reimbursed by the insurance companies. read more

Dr. Catherwood has been my primary and first choice dentist since I was a teenager to adulthood. He's truly compassionate and passionate in the work he does. Every time I'm in, there is some new technological gadgetry and what I imagine is the best 360 help and options you could select from. I'm sorry to see that anyone's had a bad experience there. Sadly, this is truly a case of humanities tendency to take things for granted like excellence in dentistry as a thing that's expected. But... I made the mistake of trying a different dentist because I'd moved. Big mistake. I drive 80 miles for him now. And YOU know he's doing an incredible job when nobody bothers to give good google reviews... because people tend to only write negative reviews. I highly recommend Dr. Catherwood D.D.S., office, staff, associates, assistants... to everyone I know and I could only endlessly go on about the compassionate, professional, charming and serenity I feel at the office, because I know I'm taken care of. Thank You Dr. Catherwood 4 Everything! read more

Dr. Catherwood is the most outstanding Dentist I have ever had the pleasure to be a patient for! He is kind, compassionate, understanding, an amazing Dentist and literally painless!!! Patty his Office Manager, is absolutely wonderful and one in a Million! Dr. Catherwood's entire staff is just fantastic and in this office, going to the Dentist is really enjoyable! I have seen Dr. Catherwood for years and now my entire extended family does as well! You will not find a better, more well qualified, outstanding Dentist and Staff anywhere! I cannot say enough wonderful things, they are awesome! Mary Sparks read more

Do not go to this dentist. There are better options. First, the customer service is terrible. The front office staff are very rude. At one point I got a phone call to remind me of an appointment, when I was kindly explaining that I would not make it, the lady hung up on me. I went in for a routine cleaning and to establish myself as a patient with Dr. Catherwood. I can't write too much about his service because he spent a total of 2 minutes looking at my teeth and consulting. He made a few comments that made me very uncomfortable being there. read more

This review is based on the service of his staff and not the dentist. Poor customer service and be extremely careful when you get your statements. Anita that works at the front desk is extremely condescending and rude if you dare question anything on your statement but do not just pay them...look them over closely! Incident #1 - $32 previous balance that should not have been on there. Incident #2 - $80 deep cleaning charge has been changed to $127 - Anita states it is because the insurance changed it - called them and they said that was not true. She then threatens me that I will now have to prepay before any service. Meet with dentist and he says no we won't have to prepay. Incident#3 - I take off time from work to go to my appointment. Anita says that I cancelled it. I took off work to come to appointment - why would I cancel it? She then changes her story to: I never had appointment. I have a card they filled out. Talk to dentist and ask for a refund of any money paid for services and cancel our account. Staff is unorganized, rude and lacking in basic billing knowledge. read more

Why would this dentist schedule a routine visit for my 83 year old mother with underlying health conditions during COVID? Same dentist that put his hands in my mouth without gloves so I stopped going there! read more

At beginning Dr. Catherwood was fine. But he make a real bad lying on the procedure did to my wife Amanda. He was suppose to finish up a root canal for my wife. but on the last appointment, he went ahead to do a Crown on my wife's good teeth. So he got ride of two good teeth of my wife and install a crown on it without telling us. My wife didn't understand English very well. So when I found out what happen, it was too late. Be careful with the Doctor, when he propose any big procedure. Too many tricks. read more

Worst experience I've ever had. First time going to a dentist out on the West coast and found him to be extremely unprofessional. I went in because I felt that I had a cavity and after speaking to my dad, who is an Endodontist on the East coast, he told me to get my tooth checked out by a dentist out here. I explained to Dr. Catherwood which tooth I thought it was and after explaining to him that my dad has done some work on my teeth, he began to become very demeaning and was flat out rude to my face. Not to mention, they used a device on my mouth that really should only be used on elderly adults, not people who have generally healthy teeth. My mouth was bleeding the entire rest of the day. Needless to say, because of my experience I refuse to go to anyone other than my normal general dentist back East. I would definitely not recommend. read more

My kids ask me ~ is it time to go to the dentist? They like to see the Doc. I have had extensive work done on my teeth and I can personally tell you, this is a great group of people under one roof. I had implants put in and have heard many horror stories of pain etc. Nope, not here. Love this gang. read more

I absolutely love Dr. Daryl Catherwood! If you live in San Diego and need a dentist he is the best possible option. I have seen him for many years and not only has he taken care of my teeth he has done amazing work for my entire family. The best thing about Dr. Catherwood is his attention to detail and wide range of expertise. He has done orthodontic work for all 4 of my children, and veneers for myself and my wife. Additionally I have referred many of my friends to his practice and everyone has been extremely satisfied with is work. One day he even took me out to lunch at an indian buffet. I would recommend him for any family in need of a great dentist. read more

I had a split upper tooth, first one behind my eyetooth on the left. Terribly painful. Dr. Catherwood's receptionist worked me in the next day, and the doctor came up with a terrific solution. He had to spend almost 2 hours working to save it and adjust my bite to relieve the pressure that caused the split. He said the best solution was extraction and a post implant but he could crown it as long as I understood it might not last forever. That was what I wanted so he has a temp on it now and I go back next week for the finishing work. Pain is GONE, too. He is experienced and very skilled. He also has a wry sense of humor! His receptionist Patty was very kind and sympathetic, and made sure I was given the attention I needed. She was very nice to me and gave all of the patients I saw her interact with very kind and attentive treatment. I highly recommend Dr. Daryl !!! read more

The hygienists good and the dentist is good. Front desk customer service quality is terrible. So rude. She overcharges and doesn't take responsibility for her need to treat patients decently at a minimum. The worst customer service I have ever encountered anywhere. read more

Dr. Catherwood was my dentist for 10 yrs. and he did lots of good work on my teeth; but one major screw up left me with an ugly mess in my mouth. I had pain in an upper bicuspid, he determined it needed a root canal and was sure it did not need the attention of a specialist. The pain continued after he had performed the root canal, I kept calling his office asking if I should still be in pain and was assured it was normal and to come back for my scheduled appt. in one month. He was dead wrong. He could only see one root on the X-ray, the other root that was hidden was fractured and when I went back after a month, he realized his mistake and sent me to an oral surgeon. The bone was infected and I ended up losing an implant next to the tooth. The oral surgeon he sent me to, Dr. Storum pulled the tooth and set me up for an implant with a double crown to take the place of the tooth and implant I had lost. Unfortunately, in his arrogance, he failed to realize I needed some bone implant and I have an ugly sunken mess with a crown with pink porcelain at the top and the gum pulled severely away from around the eye tooth. The disaster is not over as I still have to have something done to protect the root of the eye tooth. So far, this fiasco has cost me $3,000. These dentists may do good work for the most part, but when they screw up; they screw up big. I lost all faith and trust in Dr. Catherwood and urge anyone who goes to him to never let him do a root canal on their teeth. read more

I've known Dr. Catherwood fifteen years...as good as it gets...above and beyond care, very kind, very focused....can't go wrong with him.

Everyone hates dentists so I'd say the bad reviews are more an indication of a public phobia than poor dentistry and customer service. First, you sign paper work when you go in for your first visit that says you will pay $25 if you cancel your appointment in less than 24 hours. Admittedly, I have been annoyed by their billing occasionally but when I went in complaining about my wisdom teeth, he offered to take them out immediately. I like that kind of attitude! I had three wisdoms pulled by the Dr. In general, this is old fashioned dentistry at it's finest; the staff knows you and your family and even will reward your friends for referrals. They don't do unnecessary work. My grandpa was the only dentist I saw until I was 19 and Catherwood's office reminds me of his office. They are never rude to me. They schedule me and my daughter consecutively, consistently. There's never that long of a wait. And I think the Dr. has a good sense of humor. I really like him and joke back and forth frequently. He says some mildly inappropriate things but I think it's his humor and give it back. It's ok. If you're looking for luxury dentistry where people treat you like royalty (though you don't floss or treat your teeth well), be prepared to pay way more at some dental spa. Just remember, dentists look in YOUR mouth! It's pretty disgusting and amazing anybody would take that job. I don't need bells and whistles, I prefer it this way. read more

Dr. Catherwood does amazing work. The staff is has always been nice and courteous to us. Ive been going for cleanings and for one cavity, first one:(. I trust them to always do whats right. My girlfriend is getting braces from him, he made her feel real comfortable. She normally goes to a sedation dentist to keep her calm, but Doc did such a good job she now realizes sedation dentistry isnt needed when you have a good dentist. Dr. Catherwood is the best!!! His front desk staff is rude. I have spent so much money there for myself (dental implants) and my children. I have been able to afford this (military) only because I could pay over time. Now, all services need to be paid in advance. I guess a few bad apples ruined it for the rest of us. Also, I overheard them talking crap about a customer while I was sitting in the waiting room. Makes you wonder, do they do the same with you when you walk through the door. If you want a great dentist, go to Dr. Catherwood but only if you can overlook his rude front desk staff. I sure do miss Gretchen, she was great and so friendly and knew everyone by name. Her replacement has VERY POOR customer service skills. read more

It's wierd to go to the dentist and an hour later after a root canal - you don't even realize you had one. Dr. Catherwood is funny too. Although he has had a few issues finding some good staff, the bumps in the road have ended and it was only temporary with the feedback of caring patients. Dr. Catherwood took the time to call us back and his new/not so good staff is no longer there. My family has been going to Dr. Catherwood for over 12 yrs. We speak his praises and recommend friends who can't beleive they didn't switch sooner. read more
