When my friend from NOLA recommended Darrell's poboy, I knew it must be seriously good. Verdict? It was! Located at at 210's Ryan Street exit, Darrell's is a restaurant with a heavy resemblance of a sports bar. I was a bit surprised by the bar scene but after seeing a few families walking in, I didn't feel as weird as I did before when I just wanted poboy. The staff there was also a bit surprised to see a kid walking in with his work place on (I was really hungry after work), but they are super friendly and made sure I was taken care of. The poboy selection is concise, but I was too focused on getting the shrimp poboy that I didn't look at anything else. When I received my footlong shrimp poboy ($10.95), I was not expecting shrimps that aren't fried unlike conventional poboy. Although I was initially disappointed by that, a bite into it convinced me that this is indeed a extraordinarily delicious poboy! The jalapeno mayo definitely takes the cake so it certainly made this poboy a flavorful experience that made it stand out from the other poboys I had. I would definitely return for another poboy or even a drink during a football game. I am going to dedicate this review to my Yelp friend Mary S. She would so appreciate This Place, and when she comes through Lake Charles, LA (if ever) she MUST stop here. We landed at LCH and were looking for a quick easy place to eat before hitting the road to Sulpher. Yelp never fails me, and this place is what It is all about. Definitely a "locals" hangout. The only way this experience could have been better is if I would have imbibed some beer like the table of people next to us did. LOL I had the Darrel's Special (there are only 6 choices of sandwich - and the other ones did not sound as interesting EXCEPT for the SurfNTurf -mbasically, beef and shrimp on the same sandwich). When I die and go to Heaven, I am pretty sure this is what all of the food will taste like. No, it is not healthy, but OMG I think that if Jesus came back today, he would probably eat here. The bread is to die for (I know, bad joke)! The combination of "stuff" (I am not even sure what all is in the sandwich and I read it three times on the menu) is amazing, gooey, did I mention fattening, and filling. Calling the Darrell's Special just a po-boy would be like calling the Grand Canyon just a drainage ditch. The specifics seem simple enough: po-boy bread with ham, turkey, roast beef, gravy, cheddar, Swiss & provolone cheeses, mustard, lettuce, and jalapeno mayo. Nothing to write home about, right? WRONG!!! Once these items are combined, something magical happens; some sort of culinary chemical reaction. I can't tell you how, but just that it does... The bread becomes soaked with the gravy and it all just melds together into one big mess of goodness and the jalapeno mayo just puts this handheld masterpiece over the top I recommend stopping by and picking one up with chips and a cold drink next time you're in (or around) Lake Chuck and you won't be disappointed. And while they do sell half sizes, I strongly recommend getting the full size and eating the rest later. Given time to come together, some say it's even better the second time around. Best sandwich I've ever had. A friend recommended as we passed through town on the way to NOLA. Hate when someone builds things up b/c it typically never lives up to the hype. This sandwich did all this AND more. We got the Darrell's Special. The bread was amazing and the neat was juicy, moist and didn't needed to be as it slathered in roast beef gravy along with 3 melted cheeses which make your taste buds dance with delight. I had to eat somewhere else in a couple hours so we split one. I totally regret that choice. Could've easily eaten the large one and then some. The wait staff was very attentive as well. Can't judge a book by its cover, although this is something I have known for a while, especially thanks to Yell! They have NOTHING fried here.. so don't expect French fries or fried shrimp poboys. The small sandwiches are decent size, the large are even bigger. We had a group of 15 people, and everyone got the large po boy and split with someone. Along with a bag of chips. The Darrell Special was hands down, one of the best poboys I've had in a while.. The Surf n Turf would probably be what I order next time I make it to Darrells. The bloody Mary's were good, good beer and liquor selection as well. Noise was average, and they were great at accommodating such a large group. The waiter was great too! read more

Ever since we found this place on the way home from New Orleans a few years back I have made an effort to hit them up whenever I am close. The opportunity arose again yesterday and I took full advantage. I'm not trying to tell you how to eat but let me share how I choose to experience the Darrell's special. It comes dressed with roast beef, turkey, ham, American and provolone cheese. They also add gravy but I get that on the side. That way I can pour a little on the sandwich for each bite. I dump my jalapeño chips in the basket as soon as the sandwich arrives. This way all the drippings including the gravy and jalapeño mayonnaise fall on to the chips and create what can only be described as the best chip dip ever. I left a very, very happy guy. They tend to get busy during lunch so get there early. If you are solo as I was there is usually a spot to post up at the bar and you can enjoy an ice cold beer with your beautifully messy po boy. This was our first time in like Charles. We were told by numerous people to go to this restaurant for the best PoBoy we would want!! Those people were right it was on believable when we walked in you feel like you've been there before. The people are friendly we said at the bar & regulars started chatting with us. Ryan was the bartender and he was great he suggested a PoBoy for my husband to try. You can't even begin to explain the bread that was on those sandwiches it was warm and it's crunchy on the outside soft on the inside I ate the roast beef Po boy served in its own gravy and I ate the entire PoBoy! My husband had the surf and turf sliced roast beef sautéed shrimp cooked in a roast beef gravy and a homemade jalapeño mayonnaise and butter sauce. Simple menu but absolutely delicious. Good crowd to just randomly talk to new people at the bar. The bartenders were awesome and kept refilling my Arnold Palmer even when I wasn't looking. By far the best Po Boy place I have ever been to! If it is your first time try the Darrell's special. Let it be your introduction to the place. Get it with jalapeño mayo. It's not too spicy. It's just right. Also try the local beers on tap. They have a good selection and the staff will help you pick one you will like. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I was treated like a regular and an old friend. The locals were also really friendly and were willing to tell me about other places to try in the Lake Charles area. Great place to eat! If your poboys not wet, it's not worth eating, and these guys are succulent!! I got the surf and turf with jalapeno mayo on the side ( I'm a wuss with spicy) and the 6in small really hit the spot! This is a real local place! The bartenders know everyone. I tried the surf and turf which was sooo good. The shrimp and roast beef paired perfectly together and the gravy was a nice touch. I ordered 2 Darrell's Special Combos through Waitr and was charged $50. It was not indicated anywhere whether these were large or small, but because it was $50 and a combo so I assumed I was getting full sized combos. I received two halves of a sandwich without my specifications, one bag of chips and one bottle Dr. Pepper. When I went back in to ask about my order I was told that's what I ordered and if I have a problem with the price I should speak with Waitr. I understand that Waitr might of had the biggest responsibility here but rude waitstaff and a "not my problem" attitude really puts a bad taste in your mouth. read more

Darrell's is a local favorite, so try to avoid the lunch rush, if you get there after 1:30 on a weekday, and sit at the bar, you get your food quickly. Very nice staff. We shared a roast beef sandwich,and while I loved the bread, the roast beef was somewhat 'homogenized' for me,and did not have a freshly sliced beef texture I like,but more like gyro meat. Not every sandwich hits the button for everyone, and I had ordered a grilled cheese, just because it sounded good,and it was delicious! The old school, too hot to touch when it arrived, melty with crunch edges type sandwich, like my Grandma used to make for me, when I had a cold, and she served it with chicken soup, to make me feel better. This sandwich surely did that! They served it with a tasty pickle spear. Add a bag of good ol Lay's potato chips,and you have old school Nirvana!
