I'm out over $3k in medical bills due to Darnalls. In Sept, a guy there was shooting 357 mag at the steels, which is against the rules. Did he know that? who knows. Signs weren't posted at the time and I got hit with 2 ricochet in the chest that bounced off and 1 went in my arm, under my bicep, very close to my brachial artery. Darnalls were not friendly about helping patch me up. 1 woman in the clubhouse glared daggers at me while I bled and asked for help. They were more worried about a lawsuit that about me bleeding out in front of my son. Then it became a he said, he said, as the guy who broke the rules swore Darnalls told him it was OK to shoot 357 there. They didn't kick the guy out and they let him continue to harass me after I got hurt. I have been flagged there by guys with jammed AR15s and I've seen larpers in tactical gear breaking every rule there is there. Crawling on the ground, shooting bursts and double taps. There are no cameras and no medical boxes anywhere. There are no SROs anywhere. The place is crowded with newbs and is dangerous. I could have died and none of them showed concern at all. Don't go there unless you want shot in the back. read more

Terribly overpriced, and rude owners. Was going to get a membership to compensate the cost, but after a rude encounter with one of the owners we won't be back. They need to consider how they want to conduct their range and organize it, before they come at well-paying customers. read more

I was treated very bad by range instructor . The girls were excellant. I came to Illinois and had a CCL in Illinois. But was rusty . After Saturday range round, quite obvious I needed more training I told the Range instructor, but was told no, do Sunday. All I got Rude, Yelling , Bitter looks and anger, cause I wasn't good enough for him, I guess. Delmar and the girls were very professional. As long as this "individual is still there, I will never return. I'm a retired senior citizen, and didn't deserve that kind of treatment. I can't stress how amazing this place is. It's the best range in central Il, at least to me. It's true that membership is a touch on the expensive side ($100 per year + one day of service at the range), but the ranges are well worth it. Indoor range prices are some of the better prices in Il (compared to the $18-20 an hour up north) Darnall's offers $15 per hour for non-members and $12 per hour for members. The Trap and Skeet range are priced very nicely and are very well equipped and maintained. The outdoor range for rifle and pistol isn't anything fantastic, but does go out to 150 yards and is a quiet and clean place to shoot in Il. It's exceedingly hard to find rifle ranges in Illinois. The staff is fantastic. They'll generally cater to your every need (within reason, of course) and have set up the trap range in the dead of winter for me. They also rent guns out (last time I checked it was a S&W M&P auto 9mm, Taurus PT1911 and Ruger MKIII .45/22) for the pistol range. As far as I know they don't allow you to rent rifles and shotguns. Ammo usage is a bit strict on the indoor and will impose a problem on those of us that use combloc ammo. They require brass cases and most combloc ammos are steel cased. Ammo prices there are a bit expensive, as well, but understandable. The ammo they offer is highquality and they have any and all ammo you could ever need. Just be prepared to pay about $2-8 more per box than you do online or at discount stores. I think it's worth the price, though, as you'll never find better service. The selection of guns for sale is fantastic, as well. Any brand you can imagine: they can get their hands on. They can help you out with. They can take care of for you. They even sell Blackpowder and Cowboy action guns for those of us that prefer the oldschool touch. To top it off: they offer topshelf gunsmithing. They seem to know every and any brand of firearm and have parts for them, as well. The gunsmith work is fairly inexpensive and is definitely well worth the price. I highly suggest this range/store/gunsmith to ANY person in the Central Illinois area. Sure, you can buy cheaper ammo. But the question is: can you find better service? You really can't find better service than these folks! Go here, honestly: the best! read more

Open rain or shine this place is AWESOME. They are a gun shop where you can buy/sell/trade and they sell ammunition, reloading supplies, and shooting equipment. They have an Outdoor Rifle and Pistol Range, where membership is required. They have an indoor range 25 meters all pistol calibers. They also have an Outdoor Range, with Trap Fields, Skeet Fields, 5 stand birdbrain sporting clays. (If you are using TRAP or SKEET you do not need membership).. Monday: Closed Tues thru Thurs 9:00am to 9:00pm Friday thru Sun 9:00am-6:00pm. (309) 379-4331 Best to call before you go because they have a lot of instructional classes offered as well, that may be using the ranges. As of April 2010: SKEET TRAP runs you $5.00 for 25 targets.. Indoor Range $14 and hr. They let you use the Outdoor Range 1x for a fee but then you need to purchase a Year Membership for $95.00 Must bring your own weapon. read more

Super friendly staff. I had never shot at a public range before (always shot on my private property). They had a great outdoor pistol range with several different steel targets to choose from as well as spots to put up paper targets. Went ahead and bought an outdoor membership. Looking forward to heading back out to try out the rifle ranges. read more

Best ranges in McLean County!!! Ron and Sue really know what they're doing when it comes to instruction. We used to use this range for yearly firearms qualifications and they accomodated our requests to fire from a holstered position. They are always super friendly when you arrive and are always willing to walk a new shooter through the process of range safety and weapon familiarity. The prices are excellent as well. I've only used the indoor pistol range, except for one time when there was a class going on, so we shot on the outdoor range which was fun to be out in the elements. Darnall's will be my first choice in ranges. read more

Super friendly staff and perfect outdoor range. I spent the whole day there last month breaking in my M1A's barrel. Before I left, I decided to purchase the annual membership. (Without membership, the day pass is $25/person.) It is really worth one hour driving from Champaign. read more

Grossly overpriced, charged us 25/person and wasn't very impressed with the outdoor range, aside from the pistol range with steel that was about it. After charging us 50 bucks for me and my gf we were even charged for the paper targets (2) he never mentioned a price when he asked if we needed targets so that was nice, in my opinion it's a over rated over priced outdoor range. But that's Illinois for you. Wouldn't recommend, find a friend with land and go shoot there. read more

It's out in the country, this place is top notch. I shot at the indoor range about 6 times. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the place is clean and run well. It can get crowded on weekends or if they have classes going on so I recommend calling before you drive out there. I live in Champaign and this is the best place to shoot that I'm aware of. It's around an hour from the C/U area. Prices are decent too. Highly recommended! read more

I'm reviewing a recent "Personal Protection in the Home" Class for two reasons. First, because this class was a superior two-day clinic, and a great example of Darnall's many educational firearm programs. And secondly, because it demonstrates the general quality of people, facilities, assistance, and services that I've experienced consistently there. If owning a firearm is a new paradigm for you and your family, Darnall's is the perfect one-stop source of accurate advice, information, and equipment for your firearm related needs. If you are an experienced gun enthusiast and sportsman, you will be challenged to find a more well equipped and dedicated group of folks to help you out. I am a retired public high school teacher and administrator, so I know what excellent programs and learning environments need to be. Clearly, this class met or exceeded standards necessary for teaching the proper use of firearms in the protection of ones family and self. I really felt saturated with valuable new skills and knowledge. Every instructor was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, informative, and helpful. And, I felt that safety was ALWAYS paramount in every activity, and that all instructors were disciplined and concerned about us all. I highly recommend this class; and here's why. To start, there were 24 students in my class. The demographics were a cross-section of level-headed people from all walks of life: ages ranging from 30s to 70s, fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, men, women, varied ethnicities, from all walks of life. There were, for example: hospital technicians, a second grade teacher, construction worker, farmers, and retirees like myself. So, if you are even thinking about participating in a class, have no fear. You will feel comfortable. The course was a perfect mixture of classroom and shooting range instruction. I counted at last 8 instructors at any one time (an unbeatable student to instructor ratio). This means that in some activities there was one instructor for 3 or 4 students, and often as we broke into groups, we would be one on one. Classroom instruction prepared us for range activities and training, firearm operation, home defense, away from home defense issues, and legal ramifications of all sorts. I have been a karate instructor for several decades. I was very impressed with the attention given to states of mental awareness and preparation needed to prevent surprise attacks, deal with confrontations, and to survive attacks. Retired FBI agent, Frank Wright, taught incredibly interesting sessions covering legal aspects and just about anything related to armed confrontations. With a law degree and 34 years as an FBI agent, he would happily answer any questions we could throw at him. He was fascinating! Our range training was outstanding! Remember, defending your loved ones, literally saving lives, will never be under ideal conditions; never. Our range lessons included a wide spectrum of experiences including dry-firing, basic point and shoot exercises, slow firing and fast (remembering that "a slow hit is better than a fast miss!"), shooting from behind cover and concealment, and even shooting with flashlights from total darkness at moving targets! We fired over 200 rounds in both days per person. This was a very comprehensive two days with a full schedule. My liberal friends may call me a self-defense, "gun nut", and my gun nut friends may call me "one of those liberals"; I don't care. After working in high schools for over 34 years, well, I've probably been called a lot of things I can't write here. But one thing is for certain, Darnall's educational programs and the valuable experiences they offer can only be called top notch excellent!... Go find out for yourself! read more

Not only is Darnels all that the previous ratings/comments mentioned but they are also VERY FAMILY FRIENDLY. They are one of the best around you get the small shop family owned and operated since inception. You also get the knowledge and experience from decades of them learning and teaching gun safety classes as well as CCW classes. They are the first ones to help and the first ones to sit with you to keep you and others safe. They have a common sense approach as well when it comes to safety. The also take the time to get to know their members AND customers and remember you good or bad and still treat you with a level of professionalism and family that is bar none above the rest. Once you come out there and enjoy the range the only thing you'll wish for is a shorter drive but you'll still go again and again. You CANT have a better experience whether it's just you or a you bring a friend or , family you will feel welcome and leave with a smile every time! read more
