I've been a customer here for six years and have usually worked with the entry level stylists which Darin calls "New Talent". Over the years I've had excellent experiences with these less experienced stylists, and none more so than the ones I've been enjoying with Riley Barilla. With my very first cut with her I felt her confidence, her love for her work and the delightful personal style she has in communicating with her client. Riley has a career plan and wants to be the best at what she does, and anyone who can enjoy her at the start of what will be a very successful career will feel fortunate to have made the discovery. All of her haircuts have been excellent so she is consistent, which for a new stylist is not always the case. Her ability to confirm and re-confirm what it is you want allows you to just relax and let her do it- a great plan I always follow myself. She is graduating from the "New Talent" level soon but no matter what her category, she will always offer value, personal attention, and a wonderful haircut. I'm so glad to know her. read more

So I went in for the first time today, after passing by it many times and I am very pleased with the result. I love Marcello. Not only was he easy to talk to but he spent a lot of time perfecting my cut. Besides the cut, the experience was also very pleasant. I'm new to the SB area and I've been having a hard time finding a new stylist, I'm so glad I came to Darin Jon Salon! I had originally made an appointment with Malisa, but the afternoon of my appointment I got a call that she was out sick. I was able to reschedule with Kyleigh for the next day and I'm so glad I did! I brought in a a picture to help me describe the type of cut I was going for, Kyleigh really listened to what I wanted but took into account what my hair "wanted" to do. She was also so sweet and easy to talk to, it made for a relaxing experience. She cleaned up my overgrown pixie and gave me something easy and feminine. I've been going to Darin Jon for years, and they always do a wonderful job, great experience! I've had cuts and been through many colors. One of the first colors didn't come out the right color so they comped the re-do, so nice! After that they kept track in the computer of my very specific color needs and it always came out perfect. My only complaint is that my favorite stylists tend to leave after a while. But even the newbies tend to be great, so there's an affordable option for everyone! read more

I have recently moved out of the area and boy, do I miss getting a cut at Darin Jon. After a disastrous first cut at another Aveda salon in the LA area, I really wish I could just make the trek up to Santa Barbara every month. LOVE LOVE LOVE! I went to Darin Jon based on a recommendation from a friend. Turned out she knows her shiz! (not that I ever doubted her). I saw Cassie and she was AWESOME! i recommend her 100%. She gave me a perfect haircut, and then highlighted my hair (well, she did the whole ombre thing... which isn't quite highlights, but you know) What I loved most about her? The fact that she'll do whatever it takes to make you happy and love your new do. When I went in for my cut, I explained to her how I was wanting to add some color to my hair, but was too lazy for the upkeep that's required for highlights. That's when she recommended the ombre look, as well as a few celebs I should look up for some inspiration. I booked my appointment for my ombre hair exactly 4 days later. When i returned to get my hair colored, Cassie greeted me very warmly, like we had been bffs. She did my hair and we chatted about this and that, and it came out great! Once it was dried, she mentioned how she thought it would look even better if I went a bit lighter. lighter? Maybe... She told me to sleep on it, and that if i wanted to go lighter, I could do so (without paying anything extra) by booking my appointment within two weeks. She told me to call and tell them i wanted an appointment to "retouch my highlights". I came in about a week and half later to go a bit lighter. Best decision ever! LOVED my hair. Came out beautiful and exactly like how I wanted- natural, yet noticeable. Best part about it, it didn't cost me anything extra :) Thanks Cassie for the amazing haircut and color. Maria is such a skilled hair designer, she does the best cut on my thin hair that I can hardly do anything with. She cut it to make it look way fuller and I thought she was really nice on top of it all. She cut the exact amount that I asked for. Not too much and not too little. Went here for the first time and was totally satisfied. I was able to call on a Saturday morning and get an appointment for the same day with a Junior stylist, Lindsay. She did a great job and I will definitely go back. Another great thing is that they offer free bang trims, which I've already utilized. I loved the price which was very affordable ($30). It's good to know that it's still possible to to get a good haircut without having to sacrifice a limb. read more

I went twice to get my hair cut here. The first time, the cut was wonderful. The girls working at the desk were not very friendly, they were a bit snobby. The girl who cut my hair was super nice and helpful. She showed me how to style my hair and deal with my new bangs. I went in a month or so later, and the experience was not that wonderful. I went to the same girl, and although she remembered me, she didn't style my hair the same way. It was as if she had better things to do and was rushed. read more

I went to Darin Jon Studio for a major change: blonde to brunette, long and wavy to short and chic. I arrived feeling a bit apprehensive. But after Cristina colored and cut, I left smiling -- and I'm still smiling a great big smile. Loved the entire experience. And I wholeheartedly recommend Cristina. She's intelligent, artistic and an altogether delightful person with whom to spend a couple of hours while trapped in a salon chair. The studio itself is lovely: cozy, clean and sophisticated without being cold. And of course being an Aveda salon, it smells divine instead of like a chemical factory. I went to Darin a few times and liked him, but very sorry to say that the experience with the staff appointment setting was really poor. The clerk was outrageously rude and antagonistic. Unprofessional in looking up my info, and not just one time, but every time I called to book an appointment. I finally brought this matter up to Darin and sadly, he said he needs paper work to document any employee's substandard performance. So I wrote him a letter to explain my experience. I was recommended to ask for someone else by name to book my appointment but I think this shouldn't be put on me. Also, the previous appointments I made, I was told I didn't have one when I arrived, so I then had to CALL THEM few days before to make sure that I had an appointment confirmed. Ridiculous. Darin gave me a discount after I mentioned this to him but it's not about the discount, as we all know. It's about professionalism and good customer service. I decided I deserve better. A year went by and I discovered Carlyle Salon. Oh what a 180 degree difference!! I viewed the different hair style on yelp and made an appointment. Carlyle Salon met the standard of excellence. This salon looked really cool and the people are friendly but the stylist I got, what she did to my hair, was horrible. I had long permed hair and needed several inches cut off. She gave me a boy cut in the back and left the front long! She kept saying "i'm giving it texture". I didnt' realize until I got home. Now I know why she INSISTED on straightening it before I left. For a month, my hair was sticking straight out in the back, straight the key word here, and really short and the rest of my hair like curly sue. Totally uneven all over. I like edgy cuts, so I thought I can work something out with this, but it was so uneven and had no sense to it, it was useless. Now I know it doesn' t matter how the salon looks or whatever. Another friend of mine had a similar experience there and never went back there again. I wish I met her before I went ! read more

Let me begin by saying that this is a nice enough salon. It's 1 of 2 Aveda salons in SB and so I have tried to be a good client. That said, this salon has the Worst appointment system EVER! You call to make an appt; they call you back. You are on the phone with a client. They leave a message. You call them back. You leave a message. They call you back the next day while you are in a meeting ... and on it goes. Impossible! You being a smart and savvy person, try using their "online reservation system". You THINK you've made an appt, but then realize they have to call you back to schedule. You (sadly) miss their call ... back to the same telephone tag. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT. Darin is simply the best stylist in the Santa Barbara area and his studio provides exceptional care, products, and treatment. Prior to my hair cut, a young woman gave me a 'cranial' massage. I have never felt so incredible in my life! It was fabulous and I still tell friends about this treatment. My wife has been going to him for years and she is sold on him. Darin takes a personal interest in his clients and does a great job in getting you ( a male) in and out in 45 minutes with the massage, shampoo, and cut. I highly recommend this studio and specifically, Darin Jon. Why? Because he's simply the best! read more

I used to LOVE this place and I recommended it to everyone because I had a Pure Talent stylist who really had great talent. (marciano) I was SO happy! but because I'm a student, I take advantage of their discount and ended up with a pretty good highlight, but not so great hair cut. Don't get me wrong, he had a good idea of what he was doing, but the cut i requested may have been a little harder. I wanted an A-line cut like Rihanna, but it ended up looking rather one length than A line. I made an appointment for a Re cut so I'm hoping I could convey a little better what i want. I like this place, but I've seen so many people with GREAT hair and they say the Claudio Studio is great if you could spend a little more. I'm sure many of these stylist are great also, but at fairly high prices. The Pure talent stylists have to work their way up, so they're at the lowest level in the salon. They will, however, give you a fairly good cut at a low price, esp. w/ a student discount in the coupon book (half off cut/blowdry). Try this place out, but if anyone could find a better stylist at a great price, please let me know! read more
