She always caters to my needs and makes sure I'm 100% happy with my hair when I walk out the door. If I'm not she always fixes my hair to the way I want it everytime! Over the years Niki has done many different things to my hair. She has dyed my hair dark brown, also red, she has highlighted it, cut it, colored it, and styled it! Everytime Niki does my hair it turns out amazing! Niki is always so friendly and willing to help me figure out something new to do with my hair everytime! I also did one of the New Talents haircuts (generally cheaper), which is $25 for a scalp massage, wash, and cut. I didn't add the blow dry cause that's another $10. So New Talents mean they have their license but have been working at Darin Jon for under 2 years. But, for that price, I definitely got more than my moneys' worth. Michelle cut my hair. WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS SALON TO ANYONE. On Tuesday, March 20th I received a color & cut with Malisa. First I'd like to mention how personable and nice Malisa was during our appointment. We had a lengthy consultation in which I explained what I wanted to achieve during the session, the temperament of my hair, that I didn't want a highlift, wanted natural looking blended high & lowlights all within an ash blonde family, emphasized how my hair pulls warm nearly orange which I very much dislike, and didn't want a neutral or warm blonde tone in my hair at all. I showed a photo to Malisa as a reference for what I wanted my hair to look like and she expressed confidence in achieving the goal of a very ash blonde with multiple dimensions. Unfortunately, what I received were stripe like highlights, including a highlift, which only lifted up to maybe 5 levels causing a very orange color in my hair and especially near the root. Besides the all over tone turning out to be the opposite of what I requested, each foil bled against my scalp (I have fine hair) which caused cheetah like marks visible everywhere in addition to my hair line breaking during the process which will take months to grow out. What was most disappointing about my experience at the studio, was that Malisa didn't have the integrity to tell me the mistakes that we're made while coloring my hair which would have been immediately visible while removing the foils and washing out my hair. I understand the difficulty associated with being a stylist and respect the knowledge and experience it takes to be a great one. This was the reason I came to the studio in the first place and didn't mind the possibility of paying up to $200 for a single appointment being that I would receive quality care. I left a voicemail requesting a color correction appointment with another stylist the following day as I was levaing town for a week and Malisa previously mentioned she had the day off. I didn't receive a call back the same day I assumed because of the later time but did receive a voicemail the next day from Malisa reiterating my voicemail concerns and stated she was off and there were no openings with any other stylists that day to help me. Honestly I was fairly disappointed and didn't call her back as I felt she didn't care or pay enough attention during our appointment the first time to prevent or attempt to correct the mentioned mistakes. At this point I wouldn't feel comfortable having someone at the studio attempt to correct the color because of the way I was treated the first time. This is a shame as I was really looking forward to developing a longer lasting relationship with the studio but after spending over $220 and receiving the lack of attention and quality that I did. This is the first time I've ever given a review but felt it was a responsibility to share my experience so others may avoid an awful experience. I'd like to mention I attempted to contact this salon via their direct email requesting a refund with the above information and after nearly a month they never responded. read more

It has taken me way too long to write this, because Niki Mickler has been my stylist for 5 years, and I love going to her. I lived in LA for two of the five and during that time I tried three very well reviewed stylists in West Hollywood and West LA, and none compared to Niki (one even fried my hair off doing balayage, and I then drove up to SB to have Niki fix it). I have fine curly hair that I never know what to do with, and I'm terrible at giving her direction regarding what I think I want, but somehow she always knows what will be best. Her color and cut jobs are always beautiful, and she truly cares about protecting the health of your hair. Also, the salon itself is great - everyone is very nice and attentive, and the atmosphere is calming. Five stars all around :). read more

With all the 5 star reviews and the negative ones not being about the actual cut, I thought this would be a safe bet to get my hair cut from long to short. I explicitly requested someone with a minimum of 10 years cutting experience, experience working with textured/curly hair, and skilled at short cuts. Without hesitation they set me up with a "Master Stylist" that seemed to be everything I was looking for. I ended up with the worst cut of my life. I showed her pictures of what i wanted. What I ended up with looked NOTHING like what I wanted. NOTHING. She cut it way too short and when I asked her to fix it, she just made it even worse!! I remained calm and trusted this "master" would be able to figure it out. She didn't. I am very picky about my cuts and have rarely returned to the same stylist more than once except for my incredible stylist in Atlanta, Steven, but I am no diva. If I get a bad cut, or rather one that just doesn't meet my admittedly high expectations, I'll deal and wait until it grows out to have someone else fix it. The cut that this woman gave me was choppy, uneven, and completely unprofessional. The haircuts I gave my Barbies when I was little looked more stylish than this. I wanted Rihanna, I got Chuck Norris. There is nothing cute about Chuck Norris wearing lip gloss and wedges. I went back the next day and asked if someone could fix this disaster. They asked me to see the same person again because when people get bad cuts they like for the original stylist to fix it as a learning experience. Umm, don't take this the wrong way, but HELL NO! She left no room for error aside from shaving my head bald! Another stylist was kind enough to see me and fix it for free. It's now somewhat tolerable. I'm not ragging on stylist #2. She's no Steven, but it's not like she had much to work with after stylist #1 set me up with the butchering of a lifetime. Many people were surprised that I got a bad cut here. Perhaps it was just that one stylist, perhaps all the others are great, but I will NEVER (never never) return. I will continue to share my experience here with others. One word-Malisa. She is amazing. And now for the back story... Darin Jon is my favorite salon in SB I've been three times now and although I've always loved the experience, I was never happy with the final product. Each time I've tried someone new and finally ended up very happy. A lifelong Aveda lover, this is my perfect spot. Had researched the other local Aveda salon and was not interested. Malisa is considerate, receptive and knows what she's doing. Confidant sans ego and doesn't chat your ear off which I greatly appreciate. The way I see it, if your client wants to talk, they will talk and engage you, if they don't, then let them enjoy the relaxing experience. Every Aveda salon has always provided an incredible head and shoulder massage followed by an invigorating shampoo. I have been getting my hair cut here for almost four years. I've had a few different hair stylists but my current and favorite is Kelsey. She does a great job with my difficult-to-cut-hair. She is consistently good and I am always confident I will love my hair. The prices are reasonable at Darin Jon. My haircut+blow dry was $30 for awhile. If you're on the mailing list, they'll email you some last minute appointments which are 20% off. They also offer complimentary bang trims. My experience with the front desk staff is that they are always friendly and efficient. The salon I went to before would let the phone ring 5+ rings and then put me on hold. It's not like this at Darin Jon. The phone rings once and there's a friendly voice on the other line eager to set up an appointment for me. They've really got the customer service down here. This is true even in person. They greet you as you enter, figure out where you should be, walk you there, and offer you a beverage. The best, best, best part is if you make an appointment for 3PM, your appointment will actually start at 3PM. Though this may mean that I'll trouble getting an appointment with Kelsey or that her prices will spike to where I can no longer afford her haircuts, I still highly recommend you make an appointment with Kelsey!! My roommate went here because of the coupon in the UCSB coupon book about a year ago. She liked it so I went with the same coupon(1/2 off cut/blowdry). It is kind of hard to make an appointment. The first time I called, the girl talked super fast and all I heard was "on hold" and I was like "okay." I hear some music and then they HUNG UP ON ME! I have been going to Darin Jon for about 5 years. I have very challenging hair - very thin and even some bald spots - so I wanted to try someone with a good reputation. I started with Darin and was very impressed with the cut and what his approach was to my problems. Since he got me off to a good start I thought I would try one of the younger stylists so I could stay within a budget that my husband was used to. (But if that had not worked out I would have successfully made the argument that going to Darin on a regular basis was a good investment). i started with Nicole when she was at the end of her protege program. I have been very satisfied ever since and don't mind paying her higher rate now that she has moved up a level or two. I always get great highlights whenever I come here. Malissa is by far the best, not only is she professional, sweet, and funny, but she also does an amazing job and doesn't push to do something if you don't want it, like stylists at other salons sometimes do. I had went here before starting to go regularly and had a great cut/color from an older stylist with a name that starts with an E. She did an amazing job but was so rude I wanted to cry. I think it was a generational thing, and she didn't realize that it isn't okay to be rude to younger people, so if you are over the age of 20 you are good to go. I went to Darin Jon twice trying out 2 different stylists and both times were bad. The first time I showed the stylist pictures of what I wanted and she talked me out of it. I had pictures of 2 other style possibilities and she talked me out of those too. Finally I got the cut that she wanted, but I did not like it. The second time I went I showed a picture of what I wanted - a chin length bob with bangs - and the stylist propped it up on the mirror as a reference. But the ending result was above my ears. Not a bob at all. By the time I realized how short she was cutting it it was too late to stop. So now I am waiting for it to grow out again and I'll go somewhere else to get it fixed. read more

The stylist was great, but Darin Jon as a business is just sub par. I am used to Aveda studios both in California and NYC and I'm not sorry to say I will NEVER go back to Darin Jon. While getting my hair styled my coat was stolen from their closet. I was then rushed out of the salon promised that a follow up call would be given to the last customers that may have taken my coat by accident. They told me that I'd be notified either way. I waited a week before checking with them and was told they were working on it and they would call. Without hearing from them I waited another week and got a similar reaction but no real answer if the other customers had got back to them. I waited longer and finally asked for a manager, having spoken to her it was clear this was the first time she had heard about the incident. She proceeded to get defensive on the phone saying, "This has NEVER happened here before!" I proceeded to tell her that it must have happened at least once because it happened to me, several weeks ago. She got more snooty puffed up and said she needed to speak to the owner about the situation and said she would call back. It's been a month, no call. Its not the coat that matters anymore, that could have been offset by some free hair goop or credit towards a cut when the incident occurred. It's the fact that the empty promises kept coming. First let me say 2 things- 1) I have been going here for over a year 2) I absolutely love my stylist and plan on returning to see her in the future. however this is a message for the owner Darin. My car broke down and rather than cancel the appointment I took the public bus. 50 minutes later and I arrive on time for my appointment. I had no choice but to bring my little 15 lb adorable well behaved dog as I was headed to work for the next 9 hours and needed to have him with me. As soon as I entered the salon the receptionist was ICE COLD about the dog-didn't greet me but rather told me with her stone cold bitch face that "dogs were not allowed" and I explained the situation and told her if she wanted me to say it was a service animal we could do that but honestly I just ran him for an hour and he will sit on my lap and you won't even notice" she rolls her eyes and tells me she will get Darin the owner. So I stand there for 5 minutes holding my dog waiting for ? Darin to call? Come out? Not sure. She then ignores me and makes appointments and calls clients. Darin never comes out. I offer I can tie him up outside. He whines the entire time I'm there. My stylist is rushed. Not her fault at all but it's obvious everyone is annoyed with how the receptionist handled the situation as he's cute as can be. But the icing on the cake was when Darin, the owner of the salon, looks at my stylist and says- as I sit in her chair in front of his face "you need to tell your client she can't bring her dog." As a business owner myself, I was so offended he wouldn't take responsibility for his own salon and tell me himself. I was sitting right there!! Am I invisible? It was as if I didn't exist as a person. I have spent thousands at this salon and send all my friends. No one offered me water or coffee or really greeted me other than my amazing stylist. After being rushed out of the chair the first thing I wanted to do was grab my dog who was clearly ruining the salon experience for other clients...but the receptionist rudely says "um lets just check you out and get you out the door" like wtf? Was I just asked to leave? Kindly tell me that you're sorry but you can't allow dogs in the salon. And explain that it's a health code issue and that you still appreciate my business and that it's nothing personal. And if you have a problem with my dog, treat me with enough respect to tell me to your face. And maybe offer him some water. And go pet him because we were all watching how you handled this situation and your clients left feeling embarrassed at how you treated me. I called and made an appointment. I left work early on a Tuesday to make my 4:00 pm appointment, battled to find parking, and when I walked into the studio they had NO RECORD of my scheduled appointment. All of my contact information was in their system, but nothing about the appointment I had scheduled just two days earlier. They offered to schedule me a new appointment (no compensation for inconveniencing me and causing me to miss two hours of work) and I almost refused, but I was really desperate for a haircut and the salon had such good reviews that I rescheduled for the following week. Round two: I showed up and was offered a beverage, which was never brought to me. The girl who cut my hair really wanted to blow it out, but since I have curly hair I like to let it air dry so I can see what the cut actually looks like. I had to refuse a blowout multiple times. She literally spent only ten minutes cutting my hair and then whisked me out of the chair to the front desk to pay $50 for a cut that my mother could've done in her kitchen. I absolutely LOVE this salon and I have had only wonderful experiences here. First off, I came in traumatized- I bought a groupon for a "Brazillian Blowout" at another salon in SB. I will never buy a groupon again- the stylist not only did not use the advertised product (she used "Rusk Thermal Str8") she did not follow the directions correctly (I know because I asked to read them once I spotted the box she was grabbing the product from)! I ended up with severely damaged hair (it was falling off mid shaft all over my head in the handfuls) and I tried to get ahold of the stylist for weeks before I ever heard back. Needless to say, I did not want this "stylist" to touch my hair with a ten foot pole ever again. I decided I needed a deep conditioning and after much googling I decided on Darin Job Studio. I came in and instantly felt at ease by the professionalism showed by the staff. The front desk girls are very nice (and ALWAYS answer the phone quickly) and the salon is clean and cute. I had Michelle - my knight (or... Princess?) in shining armor- the treatment started with a scalp and neck massage which was amazing! Afterwards we went to the wash station where a plethora of products were massaged and worked into my hair. I can't remember exactly what was used but my hair definitely felt better afterwards. I also explained to Michelle why I was there and she had Darin (the main man himself) come over and analyze my hair. After talking with him I felt comfortable coming back for color. We decided on ombré because 1. It's in and 2. It would help me with growing my naturally dark hair in so I could color my hair less to let it heal/ prevent any further damage When I can back for my ombré appointment I was still nervous to be honest - I had nightmares the night before about everything and anything going wrong (post traumatic hair damage disorder :) ). I had NOTHING to worry about- I had made the appointment with Darin but he was honest and modest by saying his assistant Michelle was actually better at the technique so she would perform the coloring (he would still cut) and since she would do the majority of the work he would charge me her prices! Huzzah! Who doesn't like to save money? He checked in with the progress every 5 minutes to make sure things were going well and to make sure I was comfortable - great service. I loved the result. I was dissapointed with the blending o one line I had from an all over color so he offere to have me come back and they would try to blend it again for free! Huzzah Huzzah! To me that speaks volumes about his business ethic- he didn't want me to leve dissatisfied and I'm here to tell you I didn't! Since then I have come back for their blowout special ($15?) and another color- so far I have NOTHING bad to say. Michelle is amazing- she is so much fun and extremely talented! She gives a great consult, conditioning, color, blowout... So far I haven't found one thing she isn't good at! Thank you Michelle! Christina did a great job on my hair. She colored and highlighted, gave me a easy cut to maintain, and spent some time to blow dry my hair. If I could, I would give 4.5. All the staff seems friendly and knowledgeable. The minus star comes from several sources: I told the receptionist that I was interested in color and highlights with a cut. She apparently did not book enough time for me. The stylist stressed me out by saying that she cannot color and highlight my hair, then changed it to I can, but then I can't blow dry your hair. Well, she should have trusted her skills and not stress me out. She ended up saying that she would have some time to at least get my hair part dry, so that I don't leave partially done. I love Darin Jon... because of Cristina. Cristina is VERY smart about hair.. give her a few more years and she'll be a genius! What I value most about her is her ability to figure out what I want, even with the infinitesimal amount of detail I provide her. I had gone to her all throughout my college career, and returned to her on a weekend trip (more than a year later). She was just as I left her: knowledgeable, efficient, talented. I decided to color my hair this time (first time in 5 years), and I trusted every bit of it with her. She didn't disappoint, as my cut and color are amazing.
