I did not feel listened to, and there was little effort made to investigate or meaningfully address my concerns. It left me questioning the quality and standard of care being provided. What was even more concerning was the behavior of the front office staff. They were unhelpful, rigid, and frankly came across as unnecessarily difficult to deal with. Instead of assisting a patient, the interaction felt adversarial. The most unacceptable part of my experience was when I requested my medical records. The office refused to release them unless I scheduled and paid for another appointment to review my own bloodwork. This is not only inappropriate, but a clear violation of both California law and federal HIPAA regulations, which explicitly grant patients the right to access their records without unnecessary barriers. Patients should not have to argue for their legal rights or be forced into additional appointments just to obtain information that belongs to them. Overall, this experience was frustrating, unprofessional, and concerning. I would strongly encourage others to be cautious when dealing with this office.

He went over my lab work in great detail ( it was all great news). He listened to all of my concerns and made a plan to address them. He has a great sense of humor too. Despite this presentation, the referral from Dr. Shahim to Neurology was classified as "standard" rather than urgent, with the initial neurology appointment scheduled for March 5. Although the appointment was later moved to January 29 after follow-up, it still did not reflect the urgency of his rapidly progressive neurologic decline. On January 20, 2026, I returned specifically because Steve's rapid loss of mobility over only four days deeply concerned me. I explained that this degree of deterioration did not seem normal and asked whether his referral should be escalated or whether additional action was needed. I was advised that the current plan remained appropriate and that he should go to the Emergency Department only if his condition had worsened since the January 16 visit. Because I remained concerned, I immediately took Steve to the Emergency Department. He was evaluated and unfortunately was discharged without admission, neurology consultation, or neuromuscular workup, and was instructed to keep the neurology appointment already scheduled for January 29. At that appointment, Dr. Frank diagnosed Guillain-Barré syndrome the same day based on his examination and EMG testing. Dr. Frank commented that he wished he had seen Steve sooner. Rapidly progressive bilateral weakness with loss of ambulation should prompt URGENT neurologic evaluation regardless of the eventual diagnosis. In his case, the diagnosis was Guillain-Barré syndrome--a neurologic emergency that can progress rapidly and, in severe cases, lead to respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Early recognition and timely initiation of treatment are associated with better functional outcomes. He ultimately received IVIG treatment. More than six months later, he continues intensive neurological rehabilitation, still requires assistive devices for walking, and continues to experience high level of pain. At a follow-up visit after Steve's hospitalization, Dr. Shahim commented that she was glad the Guillain-Barré syndrome had not progressed to involve his lungs, noting that some patients require mechanical ventilation. We couldn't believe what we were hearing and I responded that this was precisely why I had returned on January 20 asking that his rapidly progressive neurologic symptoms be reconsidered and his referral be escalated. Instead of being empathetic and apologize, Dr Shahim raised her tone and insisted she acted correctly. We left that discussion feeling that our concerns regarding the urgency of his presentation had still not been acknowledged. We lost our confidence in Dr Shahim.

It only took me 9 months, but Dr. Jim is a hero to our family. I sleep well at night knowing my baby is safe, healthy, and if I have any concerns Dr. Jim is a phone call away. I recommend him to every new mom I know, he is a perfect fit for us. When my son got a fever, Dr Jim answered me in less than one minute with a long, and detailed message for care. What meant the most was how he took his time on the phone with me. With his suggestions our baby's fever went down that same day. We feel very lucky he accepted us into his family's practice. Everyone is so happy and welcoming too, definitely not like any other office we went to.

Switching our son to Dr. Jim's care has one of our best decisions that we have made as parents so far. The entire staff is kind and professional, there is no wait during visits, and when you do meet with Dr. Jim, he gives you ample time to ask questions and address concerns. We also love the fact that Dr. Jim is available by email, and has assisted us many times without having to visit the office. One of our favorite parts about Dr. Jim is his knowledge and expertise; he always has a confident plan on how to treat our son when different things come up. We will continue to use Dr. Jim as long as we are able and would recommend him to all of our friends. Thank you Dr. Jim and staff for caring so well for our son.
