Always check hours online - and watch your step when you walk in the front door. There are a ton of food items on this menu - including a refrigerated section for soup, frozen pierogies, and there are other salads and desserts. You do get a discount if you pay in CASH. I tried some pierogis - potato and sweet cheese. They appear to be fried as they are a bit crunchy, but I like them like that. They are pretty full pierogis. You can order them frozen to go home and cook on your own - or have them cooked to order. I also got the order of polish sausage w/kraut and some fries. The polish sausage is snappy and the kraut is great. The bun I could do without, but I just removed it and ate on it's own. The fries were salty with a mix of crispy and soggy ones. I will definitely be back to try more options and more pierogis! Inside is small, but they added some extra eating in the room next door. The food from this place is good. I won't argue that. I had come here very hungry one day and it was about 45 minutes to close, but there was a woman in front of me ordering that just would not shut up. She kept going on and on, I guess this is a place she only comes to once in a while which I understand but 15 minutes? Then I got to the counter to make an order and I said it's "for here "I was then told that all the orders had to be to go. There was a half hour left of this business being open? Nothing on the sign indicates anywhere saying that they close their dining room half an hour before closing time. So just so everybody knows their actual dining room closes about a half an hour before closing time. I was told it's because my food would take a while to make and the person needs to have time to close down the shop. So it would take like a whole 30 minutes to clean a dining room that looked perfectly OK? I mean I shouldn't judge their cleaning practices but I guess it just threw me off because if a business is open until seven they should have something somewhere stating that their dining room closes early. it's not a bar. A bar will usually close their kitchen and a certain time and that I understand. Anyway, I like the food from here, but was disappointed highly that the place closes its dining room early with no warning. read more

The restaurant was small but clean, they seemed to have a descent selection of frozen, and cooked food, but the customer service was horrible. I've never ordered pierogies before, I don't know what to eat them with or how to order them; I let the woman know this was my first time visiting the restaurant. She said, "We just turned the cooker off, you have to order frozen." I said, "How do I order frozen?" She said, "8, 9, or 10 a dozen" and then waited by the cash register for me to order. There was no explanation about which ones were good, sweet vs savory, dipping sauces, drinks, other foods that they sold, desserts, etc. Very much the attitude of, can you please order and leave so I can get back to what I was doing. Small place with a limited menu, that being said everything I ordered was great! Only reason I gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5 stars was because of the limited menu. It's location dictates its limited menu (not on a main thoroughfare). I would highly recommend this place if you have a taste for some Polish food. Being brought up on these Eastern European delicacies since birth, I have had my share of home-made, church-made, restaurant-made, Pierogi Fest-made and last but least favorite frozen. I've been around and have tasted many. Sadly, Dan's Pierogi's did not live up to my expectations. First off I arrived in the daytime. The place is dark inside, cool and uninviting. Put some lights on folks! Lights are so inexpensive to run, put them on! It wasn't very inviting from the get go. I took out a dozen of half meat and half kapusta. The dough is what makes these things live or die. These were dead on arrival (DOA). Like any dough, be it noodles or pasta, you can't keep these things warmed all day and expect superlative results. I found the dough to be too thick, heavy, gummy and dried up because they were sitting around for too long. Sadly, I have had far better. There is also a happy medium to the filling. Putting not enough filling will make them look like a deflated balloon and very unappetizing. The case at Dan's is that they are filled way too much, the opposite extreme. Pinprick them and they might explode I thought. A thin elastic dough should never be chewy or tough. It's a balancing act. You can't overpower a pierogi with way too much filling otherwise you defeat what you are trying to accomplish, the perfect pierogi. They should be served with melted real butter, sour cream or small cubes of bacon and onions. None of that was offered at Dan's. I tasted lifeless, heavy bland dough. You're going to go out of business putting too much product or filling in them at .75 cents each. That's not how you're going to maintain your existence! If you're going to base your business on P I E R O G I S They best be based on quality, taste, an exceptional product that was as great, if not better than your grandmother made, for if you fall short of that standard, you might as well hang it up, if they do not improve. I so wanted to like the pierogis at Dan's but they fell far short of my expectations. I hope over time they improve. read more

Food was great. Ended up ordered 48 total pierogies and was able to try all. Also, tried the cheese blintz and potato pancakes. Some pierogies were a little greasy, but overall very good. I really enjoyed the sauerkraut pierogie, and the potato and sweet cheese pierogies. Potato pancakes were great, order side of apple sauce, and was just motts apple sauce for a place that makes quality food I hope they will change to either homemade apple sauce or a better brand. I have always enjoyed Dan's at Pierogi Fest, so as soon as I heard that they were opening in Highland, I was overjoyed. This shop does not disappoint! I head over there at least twice a month, and every time I am delighted by what I order. The cabbage roll is savory and filling for just $3 and the potato cakes almost taste better than my bushia's. I recommend the sweet cheese or sauerkraut pierogies if you are looking for something savory, and the strawberry pierogies if you are looking for something sweet. So I have had Dan's at the pierogi fest in Whiting numerous times. I have always enjoyed them. But I was under the assumption that they were homemade until I asked yesterday at the restaurant in Highland and was told they come from Chicago. Very disappointed to hear. Maybe the demand is too much but when places get too big we always see it happen quality goes down I hope this doesn't happen. This place was recommended to us by a close friend who is a sweet, tough lady in her 60s who knows her pierogis and is an amazing cook herself. I'm no pierogi expert, I'll say that off the bat. But I'm used to the Warsaw Inn pierogi and use that as my baseline. I tried three types of pierogi here (meat, potato, potato & cheddar) and none were very good. But I'm giving this place an extra star because I really like the fact that you can get a LOT of a la carte items. Cabbage rolls, noodles and sauerkraut, etc. And they have soooo many pierogi varieties available. But the meat pierogi had an odd consistency and didn't have the flavor I'm used to. And the potato kinds had a bleh margarine-y flavor that just kinda tasted like they were cooked in old oil. The sour cream didn't really cover it up. I'm gonna give 'em another try, though, as I really hate the lack of ethnic food in the region, outside of a handful of great Italian and Mexican places. My favorites are the mushroom/ sauerkraut and the potatoes and cheese if you want authentic polish pierogies, Dan's is the place, we by dozens and freeze them. You can buy them fresh or frozen and even have them cook some while you wait,like the loaded baked potato pierogie. My daughter loves their fruit filled dessert pierogies. read more
