What should have been a very…read moresimple job, replacing doorknobs and hinges on five doors and painting the back doors, took nearly two months to complete, from July 29th until September 23rd. The biggest issue was reliability. The workers came sporadically, and there were multiple occasions when I was told someone would be coming and no one showed up. There were times when they simply did not show up as expected. For such a straightforward project, the amount of time, follow-up, and inconvenience required was unacceptable. A five-door job shouldn't take nearly two months to complete. On top of that they did a mediocre job and overcharged. Based on my experience, I would not use Mr. Handyman again. They overcharged and the work is bad. Chirping paint and banged up material

One problem with home ownership is finding people to do smaller jobs that most contractors don't…read morewant to bother with. Another is dealing with a municipality that demands everything to be done by licensed and insured contractors and has a list of their approved contractors but doesn't require them to show proof of workman's comp insurance (Orland Park). So right off the bat you're stuck either overpaying someone "approved" to replace a perfectly good deck or fence when all they need is some simple repair, or giving up and letting it stay broken. You can't fix it yourself because you're not an "approved contractor" and a lot of handyman services are just a guy with a truck. I found a flyer at my local Ace Hardware for these guys and saw they are both licensed and insured and on Orland's worthless approved contractor list. Communication was professional and they showed up on time to evaluate and give an estimate to do some work to the deck and fence. Our handyman recommended a deckover product for our older deck to help fill flaws and cracks. It's an older deck but still solid and not worth replacing yet. The product worked well and the work was done well too. He even suggested we go get the supplies to save some cash, which we did. He also installed a new fixture in the stairwell we've had for like three years because I couldn't figure out how to get up there to install it. We're happy with the results on our deck and light fixture install and looking forward to getting a few posts reset for the fence. We'll be using this service again for sure.

We also ended up paying almost twice the original quoted amount because it took them almost twice as long to complete the work. Had these been the only problems, I'd still give 5 stars. One of the times, we didn't hear back until several hours after they were scheduled to show up. They were slow to respond and impossible to reach by phone. I called this company and of course when they came out the patio door opened! Are you kidding me! Ha! Ha! After the cleaning he also suggested to get a good "Silicone" based spray which is best to use on a patio door track. He also suggested not to use DW40. It will not hurt the patio track but a silicone based spray cleaner is preferred. I found a silicone spray at a Menards near my home. I'm sure any hardware store would have it too.
