After a bad accident and years of smashing my teeth( rock climbing, biking etc) I found myself with a bridge that covered my top front six teeth. I was missing my top two front teeth and the other four were smashed. Dr Callaghan had talked to me about implants but I was not willing to spend half a year waiting for everything to be completed. During covid Dr Callaghan suggested that if I were ever to do it now was the time. It was a rough six months having just a temporary bridge but I never could have done it without Dr Callaghan and his team. His hygienist Chris was absolutely amazing. That man can make temporary teeth. And let me tell you he made them several times for me. Chris is a rockstar! I couldn't walk around missing my two front teeth and four others badly damaged. I did everything I was told not to do. Eat steak, eat pizza etc. On one occasion Chris came in specially on his day off to make me a new temporary bridge. I was never made feel bad! Claudia at the front desk was always so sweet and made sure to get me in EVERYTIME I broke my temporary bridge. The compassion and care I received over the past six months was stellar. I've used Dr. Callaghan at Cedars Dentistry for 3 years. We're moving so I am changing providers but even if we were staying in Ventura, I would have switched dentists. Im a nurse and familiar with what annoying, needy patients can look like, so I do my best not to be that way. Generally, I have pretty good teeth. That being said, my experience with Dr. Callaghan was poor on several occasions with different situations. First off, His emergency number doesnt work. Seems harmless but at 10pm on a Friday, i was panicking. I spent my weekend in tears with a 2 month old newborn to care for and unable to sleep from the pain, i was up over 24 hours barely able to care for my son. He did see me on monday, when he told me i had an infection on a cracked tooth, sent me to Dr. Morrissette (absolutely flawless experience with him however) who told me I did not have an infection. Even after mentioning the phone issue to Dr. Callaghan and his staff, noone seemed to care that patients have no assistance afterhours. Apparantly their weekend was fine and they didnt care what I had went through. So 1--Callaghan didnt answer his phone when i desperately needed him, 2--they didnt care that their emergency services didnt work, and 3--was wrong about the tooth; it was cracked, but not infected. Some of the staff at the office seem less than professional. The hygenist is less than friendly at times, making me feel uncomfortable for being there and giving me that feeling you get when you feel like your a bother to them just because your there at all. theyd rather not have to be cleaning teeth. The final straw was when Dr. Callaghan himself accused me of biting him. No joke. 33 years old, bachelors degree, volunteer, nurse--NEVER IN MY LIFE have i been accused of biting someone. Dr. Callaghan was working on a crown, i had no pain at the time and suddenly he pushes his chair back clearly angry, throws his hands in the air and shakes his head. he looks over at his staff and continues to shake his head no with his arms bowed up. I could tell something was wrong and asked "did you cut yourself?" he spit back at me "NO, I was almost bit"---I said back "I wasnt going to bite you" his response was "When I feel teeth on my hand, I think im going to be bit!" he said it in such a way as to call me a liar. I had not even come close to biting this guy. Ive had painful procedures, which this wasnt and ive never bitten the dentist?? Not only was he wrong but his demeanor was appalling. What kind of medical professional acts that way? The appropriate thing to do is say, "im sorry, you startled me, please be careful to be still, do you need more anesthetic". I stick people with needles all day and have them jump on me, i have never reacted or accused someone like this. That moment on I knew I had to leave his practice. Lastly, when my crown was placed the hygenist was walking around the office with it. I thought it was extremely unsanitary. But I was completely vulnerable as I had no protection for my tooth and allowed them to put it on. I will say its going on 6 months since that crown and its been fine, so I may have interpreted that more careless than it was. read more

First of all, I suffer from anxiety plus I have major fear of dentists. I grew up during communism in Eastern Europe and one of the " benefits " was the free dental care, which meant no anesthesia whatsoever, the sound of drill still gives me nightmares. So I am not the best patient to have. Period. I recognize that. Six months ago I went into Cedars dentistry with an emergency, in need of a root canal. Scared shitless. And in a lot of pain. I saw doctor Sam Niruyi and he was great with me, referred me to a specialist , and I came back to get my crown done in his office. Yes I was nervous, but he was very considerate, paid attention to me and made sure I was pain free and comfortable. So did the rest of the staff. They were great. Today I went to see Dr. Callaghan for 3 fillings. Pretty friendly and nice. Till it was time for novocaine shots to go in. I have never felt so much pain with those before. Usually you feel the initial sting of the needle going in, and a couple of seconds of burning sensation. Not this time, the three shots hurt like hell. When I was left to numb up, I actually cried. And it got worse from this point on. The first tooth he started drilling into, caused me pain. He stopped, gave me another shot, and started on my canine. Which also I felt the drill at. More shots, another 10 mins of waiting to numb up. One filling went uneventful after that, but when the drill went into my canine again, I was in pain. Once I got a chance to communicate that, I got told that he was trying to help me by fixing my tooth and I just need to deal with it. So I did. While that was going on, I heard that I needed Valium because I was too nervous and he would not do my third filling. He wasn't asking me about it, he was talking about me in third person to his assistant ( who btw is very nice) This whole experience brought out my fears of dentists. I do not think that I need to " deal" with any kind of pain, if I am paying someone for treating me. I was told that Dr. Callaghan prefers his patients to be on Valium, which I was also given a prescription for. I don't plan to use it. Neither do I plan to come back to that office. I will give credit where credit is due though . I cannot tell that I even have fillings in my teeth, the quality of Dr Callaghan's work is great. Just not the bedside manner. read more

Finally I have found a dentist that I can trust! I have had such bad experiences with other dentists, what a relief to have found a dentist that I feel is honest and fairly conservative in his care. I have an old filling that covers most of a molar, and Dr. Callaghan said that we can wait on getting a crown and we'll keep an eye on the tooth, since I really didn't have the money to get a crown. I had been told elsewhere that I needed a crown immediately. Well it's been a couple of years, and my tooth has been fine with no crown! I have recommended this dentist to my friends, and 2 of my co-workers use Dr. Dan too! read more

It's nice to go to a dentist these days with a neighborhood feel. This office literally operates out of a converted house and that warm culture shows through. My entire family is on a first name basis with the staff who are all friendly and welcoming. We love Chris especially. Dr. Callaghan is quick to ask a lot of question about how I'm doing way before he goes to work and is as gentle as they come. He's great with my kids too who aren't very excited to be there. I wrote a previous review...an extremely negative review, by the way...which offended Dr. Callaghan so much so he appealed to the good people at YELP and hollered "Yelp...how could they?" So YELP removed the review. So here we go again... Not at all happy with this practice nor with Dr. Callaghan's practice of dentistry. His front office staff dressed extremely unprofessional. You see the support staff more than you actually see Dr. Callaghan himself; in particular, I'm referring to the dental hygienist. This person did more "work" on my teeth that any other dental hygienist/dental office I've ever been to before. If you're lucky, and apparently I was not, I saw Dr. Callaghan for 5 minutes each time. The office staff made an error when presenting me with an estimate for a crown replacement and when confronted with the estimate I was given and the receipt I signed, which varied by more than $700, Dr. Callaghan's office agreed to honor the original quote. However, when I went in for the final fitting, Dr. Callaghan himself told me that I was trying to "cheat him"...and besides, I needed a new crown, so why complain. The vaunted new crown has since been replaced by another dentist. Go to this guy at your own peril. read more

Great Dentist, that really cares about his patients and giving them the best quality dentistry possible. He painlessly repaired my fillings and issues from work done by another dentist. He also recognized my crowding issue and recommended Invisalign, of which I am super excited to see the results (only 2 months completed out of 18). Choose callahan to be my dentist provider through my hmo plan, this guy and his front desk beast of an office manager area complete joke. Lied to my face from day one, they took advantage of my lack of experience in the field. Felt like the horrible mechanic shop that keeps telling you everything's wrong and jacks yup price with no clear understanding of why and how. Dishonest care providers life this practice really sadden me, this is a person and their health, it's embarrassing when you aren't in top notch condition and feel vulnerable, but that doesn't mean you give them the runaround and treat then like they are ignorant and uneducated. Thankfully I ask many questions and really try to understand what's going on and realized how crooked they were. I confronted the doctor, and he shushed me outside as to not let other customers hear. Regardless what a shame, I feel sorry for people that live their lives just fully taking advantage of others. But what it's all about. Dr. Callaghan is a very caring man who takes good care of his patients. Back before he moved back to California, I would see him volunteering at the free clinic, donating his time and talents every single Thursday. Most patients who came to this clinic were in pain and could not afford even the most basic care. Dr.Callaghan was there to educate, assure and give them definitive treatment.
