I don't tend to write a lot of reviews but Dane's definitely deserves one. Much like a lot of people, it'd been a long time since I'd worked out and I'd put on some weight over the pandemic that I wanted to shed. I had no idea what I was doing, so I wanted a place that would not be intimidating and would work w/ me where I was at. W/ Dane's, I found a place that had classes 6/7 days a week, 2 locations and many great coaches. The classes are challenging but as others have said, can be modified to be easier or tougher to suit your level. I can't tell you how helpful it was to see people of all shapes, sizes and #'s of abs all doing the same workouts (and all being challenged in some way or another). The coaches are very nice and supportive and provide good feedback without ever feeling like intimidating or talking down to you. As a result, I've dropped about 25 lbs in the past year, found muscles I didn't know I had and have had less back/shoulder/neck pain than I've had in years. While it is probably more expensive than most gyms, they deliver on exactly what they promise- they make it so easy such that all you really have to do is sign up for a class online and then show up...that's literally the hardest part. After that, just do what the coaches say, have fun and be proud of your results and hard work. As I move away from Austin, Dane's is one of the places I'm going to miss the most, so I hope that someone reading this message can come and take my place so Dane's can continue to be around for as long as possible! read more

I've worked out at the following gyms in Austin: Gold's Gym, 24 Hour Fitness, Castle HIll Fitness, Pure Austin, Crossfit Central, Crossfit and Fearless, Hyde Park Gym... and now Dane's Body Shop. I wouldn't even consider going to another gym now, and if you're anywhere near Hyde Park I would suggest you sign up for monthly unlimited classes, go 3-4 times a week, and never worry about your workouts ever again. Dane's is so far beyond any other gym in Austin. The workouts are intense but balanced. They constantly mix it up and target every aspect of fitness from strength to endurance to flexibility. The community is kind and supportive, and everyone helps each other out. No competition, no smugness, no attitude. Dane is a great guy and an amazing athlete and that energy radiates throughout the gym. It seems to attract only genuinely nice people who care about staying healthy. Go figure. This gym is such an important part of my overall well-being, physically and mentally, and I'm so grateful that such a place exists in Austin. read more

So I've now been going to Dane's for a little under a year and I still love it! And every friend I bring/tell loves it too! So it's not just me. If it's your first time visiting Dane's, you're probably going to either hate your body or want to quit and lay down next to Sadie the dog, after completing only the warm up. But you trudge on and by the end of the workout, you're going to feel great and ADDICTED! So now you're addicted and you come back to Dane's week after week. You find the class time that works for you, and you get to know the other people in your class. (It's a real bonding experience when you have to endure a million medicine ball situps together.) Everyone is so encouraging and excited to work out. It's a great community and all the coaches really care. Each of the workouts are crafted by the Dane's Body Shop coaches and give a full body workout, with focus on certain areas of the body. All levels of fitness can do this! At first we thought Dane was a crazed maniac who was trying to kill us. The first couple times we visited him we have pretty much blocked out of our memories. But then going to Dane's went from once a week...to twice a week...to as many times a week as we can muster. Working out with Dane is like hanging out with this really nice, helpful and charming Superman. Except this Superman is not saving you from some intergalactic plague, he's saving you from your own body. I wholeheartedly recommend the morning "Fusion" classes at Dane's Body Shop as the optimum workout for the time-poor central Austinite male in his late 30's whose personal fitness fluctuates between being good enough to run a marathon to moderately advanced "dad bod." As for Dane's "Strength" classes? I don't know anything about them. I hear they flip huge truck tires in front of the shop. Beyond that, I'm clueless. The yoga classes? I'm similarly ignorant. Perhaps they flip tires while chanting "Om" - I don't have anything factual to say on that one either. Here's why I like the "Fusion" class so much: 1.) The coaches: I've only worked with Chad and Andrew, but can recommend both of them as being certfiable non-D-Bags and really good people. Something which, based on my experience in other gyms, may be a rarity amongst people of their absurd levels of fitness. They're friendly and pay sufficient attention to you to remember your name each time, even if you're not there every week. More importantly, they do a very good job of supervising your workouts to help you achieve the maximum benefit while minimizing the risk of injury. Having almost dislocated everything between my knees and neck trying to figure out deadlifts and various squats on my own, Dane's coaches' emphasis on technique is most welcome. As for the eponymous Dane, he seems like a nice guy who's deeply committed to his business. He introduced himself on my first visit and we shook hands. The dude is strong, and his handshake is very firm, even by the standards of former professional football players/gym proprietors. Office drones whose livelihood depends on the health of their mouse-clicking hand might want to consider exchanging fist-bumps or curtsying instead. 2.) The workouts: The workouts are great, and focus on the core muscles I often overlooked during self-directed visits to weight room. Indeed, arm-only exercises appear to be something of a novelty (either that, or a Monday-only thing, which is a day I can't make), meaning that if your exercise mantra is "Sun's out, guns out," this may not be gym for you. 3.) The intensity level: The "Fusion" workouts (at least the way I do them) fall at the high end of the middle of the intensity spectrum. At the low end were the classes at the Y, after which I felt the need to go do potentially injurious things in the weight room to get a real workout. At the other end of the spectrum are the classes I took at Richard Lord's Boxing Gym - nice place and a great workout, but I felt like a dehydrated turd afterwards. Dane's workouts leave me tired, but not so obliterated that I can't push a mouse and pass for a human being at the office afterwards. read more

This is without a doubt the best environment for improving one's health and fitness in Austin. The combination of the exercise program, the coaches, the community and education provide the tools and helped me to develop the habits that I needed to meet my personal goals. The exercise program combines running, olympic lifting, core, yoga, kettle bells, medicine balls, pull up bars and your own body weight into a varied and always intense 60 minutes. After 7 months at Dane's I can categorically say that I have never had the same workout twice! Additionally they use periodization so that you develop strength, power and endurance in a disciplined manner. The coaches are top notch. They're knowledgeable about the exercises and are always available to offer modifications when they're needed. Additionally because the class size is reasonably small they are able to offer individualized attention and provide the extra push when the workout becomes difficult. For me, the community itself is the secret ingredient at Dane's. Although there are incredibly fit people at the gym, there is a real lack of ego. People genuinely encourage each other and cheer when people put in their best efforts. The quality of the people who choose to go to Dane's really makes it so that you want to go back for the next workout and push yourself just a little bit harder. Finally, there is a ton of education available through the Dane's coaches and community. Whether it's how to properly perform a lift or to improve nutrition, the coaches as well as the members are free with their knowledge. Want to know the best places to eat gluten free in Austin or how to implement a Paleo lifestyle, just ask the Dane's community and a wealth of information is available. Inclusively speaking, when you get non Yelp-elites nor active Yelpers writing multi-paragraph reviews of a place that can make your body feel like its going to seriously just keel over. One has to think, this place must be on to something. There are so many kickass things to say about Dane's Body Shop, the community fostered there and how friggin' awesome it feels to workout there, it's hard to know where to begin. I typically have passed by Danes nearly every day on the way to work or on way to my (soon to be ex) gym Pure Austin. Never really one for crossfit or fitness fads, I somewhat shrugged it off as typical Austin fitness in a box with no air conditioning. Come this summer however, frustrated with the lack of consistency and intensity of classes at Pure Austin, and bleeding from highly expensive classes at boutique spinning and yoga studios, I decided to "audition" several of Austin's fitness enclaves in hopes of finding a new fitness love. Cross-fit -- too culty. Atomic -- too serious and limited in fitness dimensions. Pure Austin -- you're fired. Danes has completely blown me away. Everyone below in their reviews hits the nail on the head --- superb instruction, balanced classes with evidence of true thought put into each exercise, and a community environment that is not only welcoming, but reminiscent of high school/collegiate sports team camaraderie...without the competition. I love to workout in the mornings, however, if I hit snooze too much there's plenty of classes to make before being late to work (5am, 6am, 7am, 8am) and just as many for after-workers. I've been trying to stay clear of the 5:30-7:30 crew simply due to the Austin summer heat, however, when attending have lived to tell the tale. I've only been working out at Danes for about a month now but I've already seen changes in my body and strength capacity that translates to countless other fitness arenas (cycling, running, yoga, etc). Another thing that is so friggin' neat about the shop is their ability to squeeze an ass-kicking workout sweat sesh into one hour--- you'll feel dead at the end but be amazed at how fast the time goes. Finally, to wrap it all into one sentence, I was planning to move to South Austin in the fall from Hyde Park...I'm seriously re-considering the move simply because I want to be closer to this gem. i've been a cyclist for about 3 years now, but have only really pushed myself in the past 12 months to really use cycling for fitness. While my body did start to shoot down in size, I was still noticing that only my legs were seeing the bulk of the results. I'd been going to the gym off and on, but when you don't know what exercises to do for which muscle groups, it makes it really hard to find motivation to keep going--especially when you don't see the results. enter Dane's Body Shop. I just moved to Hyde Park in August, but had noticed Dane's before because I've been known to hang out on the porch of the Parlor from time to time. At first the idea of a more hardcore work out experience was daunting to me, then I slowly warmed up to the idea. After moving to Hyde Park, then, I really found myself more motivated to get into better shape than i'd been. I scoped out the prices for Dane's and really thought it was reasonable. for $99/mo, I get unlimited visits, and, really, a better exercise experience than I would if I went to a gym of comparable price alone. Dane is a really excellent teacher and motivator, and he understands that his students all come from different backgrounds. I was happy to see the various body types involved in the classes--buff, skinny, average, chubby, and fat. Every body is different and deserves the same amount of respect and attention as the other. You can find this at Dane's. I've only been at Dane's for a little over a month, but I'm already seeing results not only in my muscle tone, but in my energy and overall positivity. If you want to get ripped or lose that gut, don't be afraid to give Dane's a shot. You know how people say "such-and-such" changed my life? Usually they are being hyperbolic and melodramatic, but in this case I can say in a very literal sense that Dane's Body Shop changed my life. That's what they do there, they change lives. I wandered into Dane's two years ago simply because I lived on Avenue A and was curious what was with these jabronis sprinting to the stop sign and back every morning. Now, I considered myself a fit person. I wrestled in middle school, boxed in high school, ran five miles a day and had been training generally since I was fourteen. I was sure I was going to walk in there and show these weekend warriors what fitness really looked like. Halfway through my first class my goal switched from showing people up to simply not vomiting. It looked like these people were on to something and I had a thing or two to learn. Over the next two years I learned a lot about fitness and what it means to be fit. How it is more than being able to run far or fast, lift really heavy weights or look good in the mirror. Dane's training philosophy incorporates mobility, flexibility, muscular endurance, VO2 maximization, power development, absolute strength development and just plain fun. It's uncommon to have a workout involving playing cards, group coordination or even chasing after a tennis ball. Moreover, the incredibly positive community and atmosphere will help you to look after your diet, sleep and emotional well-being. But during those two years I also grew a lot as a person by being at DBS. The Shop intentionally fosters a community of uplifting and outgoing people through social events, friendly competitions and charity projects. I've made a lot of friends there and on weekends it is very common to find us together throwing a frisbee, boating on Lake Travis or BBQing in our backyards. By watching DBS, I was also able to learn a lot about small business development and management for my own endeavors. Finally, I'm competing in my first USPA powerlifting meet this Saturday, a sport I never would have taken up if it weren't for those "jabronis" running to the stop sign. The staff themselves also separates DBS from a normal gym or fitness studio. Every single one of them is encouraging, friendly and knowledgable without exception. None of them are there for the check; this a lifestyle for them. They've answered every question I've had, congratulated me when I've succeeded, pushed me when I slacked, coached me when I needed to learn, were patient with me when I was a jerk and never once kicked me out when I wanted to stay after class to do extra squats. The owner, Dane, is an extremely intelligent, athletic, positive, hands-on person who affects all of his staff with his enthusiasm. The GM, Leann, is always on the ball and will even e-mail you articles about your various athletic interests. So if you're looking to make a positive change in your life, I would encourage you to check out The Shop. They offer an overall experience I can't see any gym or fitness studio in Austin matching. I don't know of anyone who hasn't come away a better person for having been there. read more

Started working out with Dane in his group classes a couple months ago and can't believe I haven't been doing so for years. He and his team have a large number of classes available all day every day and the prices are very reasonable, especially if you buy a bundle of 20 classes in advance which breaks down to $11 per class. Can't beat that. I go right after work 2-3 days a week, but there are classes early in the AM, lunchtime, you name it. One of the best workouts I've had in years, and Dane keeps it exciting and challenging. Check out his website for the various types of classes and availability. I recommend the Core Fusion sessions, which combine resistance and core training with a sprinkling of yoga & Pilates. It will kick your butt! Dane's the man. Let him pump.....you up!!!! I had no idea working out could be this amazing. I joined Dane's Body Shop in July after spending a few years languishing at Gold's Gym and Planet Fitness. One thing I learned about myself at big box gyms is that I had no idea how to work out. I would run a bit, move some weights around and then leave. But I never felt like I knew what the heck I was doing. Not so at Dane's. Dane is an incredibly nice genuine person. He has employed a small staff of trainers that are also just as pleasant. The instruction is clear, thorough, and completely void of pretense. The workouts are challenging, targeted, and varied. As others have mentioned, the incorporation of yoga into the workouts is fantastic. I'm sure I've not done the same workout twice and have learned that my body is capable of doing much more that I previously thought. Additionally, if you are looking for nutrition education and amazing yoga classes it's all there at Dane's. What makes this experience even better are the people that are in your class. There are no meat heads, leering weirdos, or folks just going through the motions. There are great people here. Imagine going through a rep and hearing "You can do it!" by the person standing next to you. That is how sweet the vibe is at Dane's. You gotta swing by the shop and check it out. read more

I have tried many gyms in Austin and Danes is the absolute best gym I've been to! The work and thought behind every workout and program they do is superb. This is easily a gym you can go to to build up strength, cardio and stamina. I have done crossfit and been a member at Pure Austin for 3 years and I have canceled my memberships. The other great thing about this gym is that my fiancé was a person who never really worked out before. We both started at the same time and he loves it as much as I do. All the people are extremely friendly and encouraging. Also, the coaches really spend time looking at your form and correct you if needed. It's a non threatening environment if you are looking to just get started. I love this place and can't say enough great things! Come check it out and you will see! read more

If you want to get in shape or just improve your health, strength, and endurance this is the place for you. The small classes are focused and encouraging. There's nothing worse or more intimidating than a big box gym where the equipment is foreign and not inviting at all. I've tried the big box gyms like many and just didn't go. I am Austin born and raised and love the outdoors. At Dane's you are working out in an open-air environment with excellent coaches who push and praise you. Looking forward to a challenging workout is something I thought I would never do. I have also taken a lot away with me- learning exercises that I can do at home or when traveling. I have had the pleasure of taking many classes at Danes Body Shop over the last several weeks. As a former aerobics instructor and personal trainer, I have a lot of expectations of what a workout will bring me, as well as a well rounded program. I have to say that hands down-this is one of THE BEST workouts I have ever had! Dane and his team will push your body to it's limits which will help you get through plateaus and onto the results that you desire. The classes are fun too, with lots of different excersizes so you never feel as if you are doing the same thing, and great music to boot! What I also LOVE is that they incorporate yoga and pilates in the workouts, or if you just want to take yoga and pilates by itself they offer those classes as well. You owe it to yourself to try this workout out for 6 weeks and see what happens, (I promise you will be hooked!) not to mention support a local business here in Austin. I love Danes Body Shop! =) Already hitting my 5 month membership mark and decided to write a review :o) I enjoy every aspect of this gym. My only regret about this gym, is I wish I had known about this place sooner...years sooner!! I actually just moved to Austin from Seattle, last March, and gyms like Danes Body Shop don't exist there! haha....Perhaps the rainy, misty weather couldn't support a gym that involves community, neighborhood exercising outdoors. =) This gym is one huge reason I wouldn't want to move too, too far! :0) I was one of the those chain gym hoppers that would switch from LAfitness & 24 hr at least 3x a year in WA just to keep it "fun" and "different"!!! lol Here at Danes, I now know what a fun gym is! I never knew I can have fun the way I do at DBS...the feeling of dying during a crazy workout, being sore daily, & sweating like none other is something I look forward to 3x a week! ha!! :0) What is also great is that the coaches know your name and say, "hi" and see whats up and how you're doing....also they address you during workouts and encourage you...actually we all as members encourage one another....its great place to be!.... anywho... The schedule is pretty flexible. The coaches are very knowledgeable. The atmosphere is easy going, friendly, and fast paced. In terms of my fellow gym-goers...Everyone is pretty supportive, encouraging, and helpful. I attend the fusion classes and its surprising what we can accomplish in an hour of working out. Every single class I finish leaves me feeling awesome. Its a program made for EVERYONE!!! If u doubt the EVERYONE statement, its true!! There are some exercises that I struggle with, but the fabulous coaches are so awesome they suggest modifications if an exercise is a tad difficult. So if you're resting your IT band, shoulder, or ACL, or perhaps don't have the muscle strength...modifications for all ;) (#bandsmakepullupseasier) haha...... In all seriousness, Danes Body Shop is a stellar gym that I really enjoy working out at. Dane and his elite coaches never left me disappointed where I felt I didn't get a good workout done. I am not a gym or fitness expert, but in my time (1 year) at Dane's Body Shop I have learned two things that are a must for me when it comes to fitness. Expertise & Community, both of which without a doubt shine at Dane's. All of the coaches are very knowledgeable, and will make sure you feel great about parts of the programming (even if you have never heard of it). All of the coaches will make sure they learn your name, and get to know your strengths and limitations. While they have varying classes and degrees of difficulty (see website for descriptions), the coaches are so good you can go to any class at any level and have a great safe workout. I am in the best shape of my life because of Dane's. The community feel and personality of this gym is unbelievable. You are surrounded by a wide range of others working out with you at varying fitness levels. Therefore, you don't feel like you are out of place just starting out or while you're learning something new. In fact, other members are encouraging and supportive in your fitness journey, or if you just stop in for a good sweat sometime. This aspect of the gym encourages me to go more often and be social with other members while getting in shape and challenging myself. read more

Was in Austin a few weeks ago for a weekend trip, and needed a Saturday workout - couldn't be happier that I found Dane's Body Shop! I am an avid Crossfitter in Houston, have played sports all my life. I think Dane's has hit it out of the park in terms of what a "gym" should be. They target all aspects of fitness. Make no mistake, you will work incredibly hard but it's not a crazy cult. Wish I lived nearby so I could attend every day. This will be my fitness home every time I'm in Austin. Highly recommend checking them out, it will rock your perceptions and challenge you. Also, all the coaches I met were extremely knowledgeable without being pretentious. Been hitting up the Shop for a few months now, and while the "rustic" exterior/interior may not be for everyone, I have found a fitness home. Concept is a converted auto body shop, but the facility is well appointed, comfortable, and members ever-inviting. Coaching staff is top notch. IMO, Dane's has found the sweet spot for a wide array of training methods including: yoga, strength and multiple forms of conditioning. But, perhaps I'm biased. I like the team/community angle, makes for a better experience to and from the "gym." Either way, worth a bit more than a look :) read more

Joined dane's to kickstart my fitness after a period of inactivity. Within 6 months I saw noticeable improvement in my strength, flexibility, and overall comfort in moving. I think I'll start by saying that like Chris and Tami, I too thought Dane was a freak of nature that was bent on making me kill myself through exercise. Fortunately for me, (and the others that were working out there) this was not the case. My neighbor found out about Dane's through a friend and so the three of us decided to give it a try. First impression was great! He's super friendly, welcoming, and disgustingly fit. Then the work out started and by about half way through I thought I was going to keel over lol. Needless to say I was a little more than slightly out of shape. I stuck with him and was going three times a week for one month. I stopped after a month (not for any other reason than my own lack of follow through) but I continued to lose weight. After a total of 3 months passed from the first day I started going, I lost a total of 30 lbs. I did not continue on any other workout program after I stopped going to Dane's and my diet was not as good as it could have been so I have no one else to thank but him! The best part about going (besides the obvious health benefits) is that not only is Dane super encouraging, but so is everyone else there! I am a pretty big pessimist when it comes to working out and I'm sure that can be challenging to deal with but he was able to break through my negativity and push me to my limits. I am thoroughly impressed with how hard he works to make sure that you are being the best you can be to yourself. Bottom line, if your looking for a new workout and your just not sure, give this a try. You will not be sorry! read more

If you like challenging work outs in a laid back environment... this is the place for you. Dane is not only a great instructor, but he is a great person with an abundance of positive and supportive energy. So it's no surprise that the people who attend his classes are equally cool, but serious about getting a good work out. I have been going to Dane's for a year, and it has been the biggest blessing in my life! I was an athlete in college, and pretty much had sworn off all forms of weights because I was so sick of the gym. Dane's helped me enjoy the gym again & I immediately got re-addicted to working out! I go about 3-5x a week (depending on how sore I am) and it's always one of the highlights of my day. I had previously been a member of Pure Austin - I would go there about 4x a week and just pretend to workout and maybe spend 30 minutes on a treadmill. I knew I needed a change, so I decided to give Dane's a shot! Well, long story short, it is AMAZING. I love all the coaches - they are so knowledgeable & go over each exercise before you do it. They will come around and correct form as you are working out, too, which is has been so helpful for me - it's helped me get stronger while staying safe/uninjured! I leave the Shop after 1 hr completely drenched in sweat and knowing I got a great workout. The location is really convenient for me, and they just opened a 2nd one on Manor Road that is really great. The programming is great. I don't think I have ever done the same exact workout twice. We do everything - strength work, kettle bells, dumb bells, body weight, plyometrics, running, rowing, abs, stretching. Coaches are so encouraging, will modify the workout for injuries, they all know your name, and are just great people in general. I'm moving to Houston and one of my first thoughts was, "crap! how am i possibly going to find a place like Dane's Body Shop in Houston?!" -- I don't think anything compares to Dane's, and I'm already looking forward to coming back to the Shop whenever I am in Austin on weekends. read more

Best local gym in Austin! I started coming here a few years ago. They offer so many times to fit any busy schedule. All the members are extremely friendly and the classes are suitable for all levels. Went to Dane's Body Shop yesterday for the Fusion Bootcamp Class and was very impressed with my entire visit. Great instruction, love love love the incorporation of yoga, love the fact that you are able to do reps at your own pace and the concentration is on form and not beating your neighbor, loved the playlist which kept me super motivated - not to mention Dane himself - knows the body very well, cares about his clients, and is very motivational. The instructors are highly experienced and very welcoming and the general atmosphere of the shop is quite calming. Before going to Dane's I considered myself in pretty good shape. I had never done a group workout and wasn't sure if I would like it. I started going to Dane's over a year ago and I absolutely love it. Though I thought I was in really good shape and run marathons - Dane's has made me even better. The workouts have toned muscles I didn't know I had and it has also helped me shave off time. Besides great workouts, the people are great - sometimes you go to the gym or other group workouts and you feel intimidated or no one has fun... At Dane's it's fun and relaxed but super challenging at the same time. I have met several new people in Austin and look forward to coming to the classes... I also love how the workouts change day to day and week to week so you are always learning something new. I highly recommend Dane's! read more
