This is a new favorite of mine! I went here last minute on a Sunday afternoon and there was plenty of free space. The selection of pottery to paint was extensive and ranged from small ornaments to large vases and more. I am not a painter, but the staff explained what techniques to use to produce the desired result. They were very friendly and eager to help. There was a birthday party when I went, so it got a little noisy in there. It was a little pricey but there is a variety of prices to choose from and the base painting price has no time limit, so you can really take your time painting. You are told a day to come back to pick up your pottery, but I wish they called/texted when it was ready so I knew for sure. We took our visiting family to Poulsbo for a Sunday outing, and they were really excited to visit the Dancing Brush, which used to be one of our favorite spots. Unfortunately, after today, I'm so frustrated that I'm having trouble even putting it into words. We arrived around 1:30 pm and asked about putting our names on the waitlist. The staff told us we were first on the list, that they'd call us when a table was ready, and that the wait would be about an hour. It seemed like a couple of parties already going on, so we were fine with waiting (especially since we didn't call ahead). We spent time browsing a few shops and waited outside the Dancing Brush in the cold for a table to open up. Eventually, my fiancé went inside to ask about possibly making a reservation for another day, but we decided to keep the wait. This is where things really went downhill. We were literally waiting right outside the store--you could see us, and I kept checking my phone to make sure we hadn't missed a call. There weren't many other shops we could visit, so we were stuck waiting. After several hours, I went back in to check how much longer it would be. At this point, it had been well over two hours since we were told we were first on the list. The five of us were freezing, and we had no other options for things to do. Long story short, they never called us, nor did they confirm if we still wanted to be on the list. The associates had just crossed us off and kept seating other parties. I was shocked and completely frustrated. One associate apologized, but said it was the fault of another coworker. I ended up walking out of the store because I didn't want to cause a scene, but the entire situation was unprofessional and disrespectful. For reference, we made the reservation at 1:30, and we were only told about the issue at 4:00--two and a half hours of waiting for absolutely nothing. If we hadn't gone in to verify what the heck was going on, we would've continued waiting for that imaginary phone call we were promised. They also had a table available right then, so it felt like our business just didn't matter. It completely ruined our Sunday, and we won't be returning. If you plan to visit, I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time (and confirming!) or don't bother, because they clearly don't prioritize their waitlist or follow through on their promises. read more

Avoid on the weekend unless you have a reservation. Monday, they were suuuuper slow. Which is great for painters! We were able to get in, find pieces we wanted, get a whole schpeal about best ways to paint, different styles, etc. super useful. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It's not cheap, but it's well priced and not anything over the top IMO. I didn't see many pieces that I thought were priced too high, most were on par with what I expected. We brought a toddler, he had fun painting his mug (and himself.) they had a high chair which made it loads easier. Overall, it's fun regardless of age (our group ranged from 2-65, there were tables with kids and couples on dates.) and a unique experience. I went in to get 2 pieces picked up today. When I walked in I didn't get greeted by the only person at the front, who was helping another person infront of me. When my friend had given her the phone number under the ticket, there was no customer interaction. When the ticket finally printed she had another colleague go and pick them up for us. She seemed annoyed. When she had something to go do in the front of the studio; there was the rest of my party standing behind, she didn't say excuse me or sorry, she had just pushed through our party and went to her task. I believe when I caught a glimpse of her name tag it wrote "Kim". Thank you to the very nice lady picking up our pieces and gave us wonderful interaction! read more

We had the greatest experience here!! They have a large variety of items to choose from that you can paint, they have a great paint selection, and offer tools that you can use to do special things like very fine tip, pens for writing, or doing lines. In the beginning one of the employees showed us how to get started, and what to do and answered any questions if we had them. We weren't rushed, we could stay as long as we liked... My daughter-in-law and I brought my 5 granddaughters to the studio to make a BBQ platter for my son for Father's Day. We had a wonderful experience! It can be hard to bring 5 children anywhere, but the staff were so helpful and patient. They even helped us get the handprint of the 10 month old baby onto the platter while she was still asleep! The best pottery studio I have been to, and I have been to many from Coast to Coast. When we came in, my family was greeted with a friendly smile and told of the price structure. $10 fee per person for unlimited art supplies and assistance and then the price of the pottery. From what I saw the pottery ranged from 10-20 dollars. The $10 fee was generous in that it included as many paint colors, brushes, stencils, stamps... everything! At many of the art studios my family has been to, $10 was the fee for maybe 4 paint colors max. Included were not only the unlimited supplies l, but also art lessons to assist in making your art happen. I chose what I thought was simple. The artist employee brought out a sample piece for me to experiment on. She put it on a turntable, and explained and taught me how I could achieve the look I was looking for. And then went on to teach my kids different techniques. I would highly recommend this studio for families. read more

Grew up near Poulsbo and have fond memories of birthday parties at dancing brush. Fast forward 20 years and decided while I was home for the holidays to make some food bowls for my two cats. Wonderful, helpful workers, who extended my hold so I could come back and do a second session free of studio charge after inclement weather hit the area. Highly recommend for a quiet arty experience, solo or with friends/family. They have a great selection of items to paint - almost too many! Took me about 20 minutes to decide what bowls to paint. Due to group size they were willing to accommodate an evening booking midweek and provided quick and easy permit instructions so my group could enjoy a glass of wine while we chatted and painted. They offer a wide selection of pieces to choose from with all the supplies and materials needed to create your masterpiece plus they do all the clean up. Samantha was amazing from start to finish, incredibly knowledgeable of tools and techniques and was beyond helpful assisting and answering questions as they came up. I have been going to this studio for years and have spent hundreds of dollars here as I used to live up the street. So fun for a date night, girls get together or Birthday party. They've also donated sessions to local non-profits which is truly appreciated. I've never had a negative experience until today. An employee named "Tommy" was very dismissive and almost confrontational on the phone when I called to see if my item was ready to be picked up (a day earlier than the 7 days posted at the shop.) He said it wasn't ready and refused to actually look around to check. I went to the shop when I got into town and indeed, my item, along with many of the items my friends painted on the same day were fired and on the shelf to be picked up. While I was waiting at the counter to let them know I was taking my plate I overheard the same "Tommy" speaking to another DB employee in such a condescending manner it made my eyebrows raise and jaw drop. This person is NOT an asset to the shop- quite the opposite, actually. There is no email listed on the website, or I'd direct these comments to the studio directly. While the experience of designing and painting pottery was fun for our kids (hence the two stars) albeit a bit on the expensive side, the customer service when I went to pick up the finished pieces was extremely disappointing - after having been told to stand aside while the transactions of other customers (who actually were behind us in the queue but they were paying, not picking up) were processed, I was told that I would have to find the finished pieces that were squirreled away somewhere in the store. Unfortunately, I wasn't there when the pieces were created (I was picking them up as an errand) and had no idea what to look for. The cashier was not very sympathetic and just pointed me in a general direction - as I was pressed for time and hadn't planned on participating in an impromptu scavenger hunt, I left empty handed. While the store wasn't particularly busy, it isn't so much that I wasn't able to pick up the finished pieces as it was the attitude of the cashier. Apparently, once you have paid for your artwork, you are a persona non grata. read more

Several years ago all of the ladies and gentlemen who staffed this business were so upbeat and personable. They were always willing to help and make things right. It was fun for about 30 minutes of painting but WAY overpriced! We painted two pieces and paid $46 and that was with a military discount (which is appreciated)!! My son is 3 and my daughter is 8. The $10 sitting for a family of 5 is just to pricey. We have enjoyed several of these painting places and never paid a sitting fee or one that I thought was to much. The staff was nice, the young lady with very curly hair was wonderful! However the girl at the register was a little rude and condescending when I asked if I had to pay for my 3 year olds sitting fee. Cute place but we will not be returning. read more

I really like to bring my daughter here on rainy afternoons. The studio is super cute, really inspiring, and they have great stuff to choose from to paint. The only thing that keeps me from coming more often is the fact that I have to pay to sit with my daughter while she paints, even if I don't touch a paintbrush. The fee for both of us, plus the cost of the ceramic (which is very high for the size of the pieces, in my opinion), makes this a very expensive activity. It's especially frustrating when she paints her piece in well-under an hour and I've already had to pay nearly $20 for an entire day's worth of studio time. I've been here several times and I LOVE it! It's a great thing to do on a rainy afternoon. It's not too pricey if you're smart about it. If you want to create the world's larges salad bowl it can be a little expensive but if you're being sensible and make a teacup, it's totally affordable. The staff is great, super helpful! I've been there a couple of times when it's been SUPER crazy and they got a little testy but it was to be expected (I'd be testy too if ten eight-year-olds were running around in a pottery shop). We have gone here a few times in the last two years and I probably would've given them five stars immediately after our first visit, however, every single piece we have made there has at least one chip out of it. I suppose if you are making decorative things that will never be used then great. We have made a utensil holder, this was actually chipped when we picked it up and has continued to peel ever since, my husband said something likely happened in the kiln firing process. Our spoon holder has a big chip in the side, other things have resulted in similar fates. We don't even own a dishwasher so everything is hand-washed and gently cared for. No children are using things in our kitchen. I don't know anything about pottery, but my husband made several pieces in high school (20 years ago) that are still in perfect condition. So either the ceramic is low-quality and/or there is something going on in the glazing process. The staff is wonderful, they are good about explaining things and have cheery personalities which is essential since this is a place you go to have fun. read more

My kiddos and I were headed to Gig Harbor to paint pottery at our favorite place when we found out that there was a huge backup on the freeway. Still wanting to stick with the plan, we headed back the other direction to visit Dancing Brush. I went here with my oldest kiddo years ago and I couldn't remember why I didn't really care for this place. When we walked in and they started talking about sitting fees I remembered the main reason...ouch, the price. We had fun, painted our pieces, cleaned up, handed our pieces over, paid (3 mugs= about $75!), and picked up our pieces a week later. The pickup process consists of someone behind the desk pointing you in the direction of the window the pottery is sitting in. You will be retrieving your pieces without assistance and none of your pieces will be sitting together, so you need to dig though and find them. Then you bring them up to the counter where they wrap it. When I got home I looked a little closer at the pieces. Another thing I remembered about a previous mug we painted here was that the glaze lasted about 2 years before cracking inside the mug and making it unusable (on the bright side I just turned it into a pot with a cute succulent planted in it). This time, each of my mugs seemed to have at least one bubble in the glaze. I'm not going to pretend I know a whole lot about glazing pottery, but I've never seen my pieces returned with bubbles when I get them back from my favorite place. All in all, we had fun. However, the price and quality remind me that this place won't be our first choice. read more

There are many options to help you get started: stamps, pictures, and lots of ceramic examples. They keep a full set of all the colors available at your table. I've been a customer for many years, visiting from out of state several times a year. Dancing brush is always on the agenda for my visits. I use it to commemorate important events in our family, so it scratches both my creative itch and a family history function. Dancing brush is the creative arts studio for me that sets the standard for all the studios I have used, and there are several. The environment has been thoughtfully created to encourage your creativity - it is colorful and fun, the music is uplifting, and the place is filled with great examples of different techniques and ideas of how to decorate the bisque ware they sell. There are tons of tools, templates, paints, brushes, stamps, wax resist - you name it, they probably have the what you need. The staff is skilled in guiding you through the process, today I watched them coax my mom into a creative excursion to make a mug for my uncle that she wanted to take, but was too intimidated to start. They helped her identify easy ways to accomplish the design she wanted to achieve. Be aware that you will have a great time here, but it isn't a cheap activity. You pay the price of the piece which includes the firing, plus a 10 dollar studio fee good for 7 days that includes all your materials, creative advice, and a magic pickup fairy to clean up your mess after you. In my case it costs to ship the piece home too, but if this activity is in your price point at all, this is the best place anywhere across the country that I have visited to do it. read more
