I had the most wonderful shopping experience at Dancers Image. I came in tentatively with no knowledge of what to look for in a pair of tap shoes a day before walking into my first beginner adult tap class. All employees were wonderful but Marisa, especially, blew me away with her knowledge, attentiveness, and desire to make sure I left with the perfect pair of tap shoes for my specific feet (which have all sorts of issues). It took me forever to choose and there was never a second I felt rushed or pressured in any way. We were in town for dance convention and needed pointe shoes. Called from airport as soon as they opened and were able to get a fitting scheduled right away. A quick 15 minute drive from BOS airport. Much to my horror I realized I had left my freshly laundered professional fishnets hanging in my laundry room. Absolutely LOVE this store. Been coming here for years and there are So many colors not just for dance but all kinds of active wear! Parking is limited but there's plenty of close by areas to use. They accept all cards and cash which wis super helpful! About as organized as a retail with lots to offer can be and the service was so sweet and helpful all of the girls who work there were friendly! My daughter is in theater and they are doing a musical. She needed dance shoes and I was at a loss. When she was little, I just went to Payless but they did not have her size and for $18 (quite frankly) it was crap. A quick search on Yelp sent me to this store and I am so glad it did. We live in the Bay Area and have shopped at many different stores for pointe shoes. Hands down Dancer's Image is the best place we have been to and I'm glad we made a point of going there while we were in the Boston area. Not only did the staff take the time to make sure my daughter had proper fitting pointe shoes, they also showed some tricks to make them even more comfortable. Anyone who doesn't like this place is probably a competitor trying to steer away business. We now call them for shoes and within a few days they are in California. I have taken my daughter here several times for pointe shoes and dance supplies. They take excellent care in fitting the shoes, bringing out pair after to pair to find the ones that fit correctly. Paula the owner is very knowledgeable about dance and the dance community. She can be a little abrupt or blunt, but our experience has been that she's tremendously generous with her time and expertise, and really cares that the dancers who come to her store, whether they are professionals or little girls just starting out, get the fitted out to be the best dancers they can be. Really wish I had read the reviews before going to this store. The girl who "helped" us was so cold and snobbish. I brought my 3year old daughter in for ballet accessories,now I do not need people to fawn all over my kids,but a smile would've gone a long way to help make her comfortable. On the way out my daughter asked why the girl that worked there was angry and did not smile.....This trip was not worth the 10%off they offer for WRSD students! I will NEVER go back to this place again! Went in with my girls to get ballroom shoes, and was treated so badly; it was very uncomfortable and embarrassing in front of the other customers. The owner was so condescending and rude to us that i left. It was very clear that she didn't want us there. Boston is pretty dead for dance stores, especially if you don't own a car. I needed something not available online, so I made the trek out to Dancer's Image. I can fully see why the negative reviews were written. The owner was fairly civil to me, but she was not treating everyone that nicely. I was expecting some variation of, "Oh, hun, you're going to need to go up a size or three," so the bar was pretty low. The store looks like a pink-and-glitter fairy vomited, which isn't what I'd have chosen for decor, but no big deal. The shop was pretty disorganized, and I would have bought many more items except that the employees couldn't locate them. Overall, I'd go back again, but only because I don't live in New York anymore. read more

This place was one of the best retail experiences I've had. I'm not a pre-professional ballet dancer - I'm an adult trying to get back into ballet after stopping for a while. With all the gear that was in there and all the Boston Ballet sponsorships, I was ready to feel intimidated. But as soon as I got downstairs, I was helped with shoes and made to feel very comfortable. Nicole was a great person to talk to and was very encouraging of me going back into ballet. Rating = 3.5 stars The store has a pretty good selection of dance, ballet and gymnastics items you or your child may need. I know a lot of people complain about the owner who is snippy but I usually shop in September when classes start and miss dealing with her because the store is so busy. If you shop then you can also get a 10% back to school discount (or 20% if you are buying for a class at the Boston Ballet School a few doors down). The return policy isn't great - returns within 5 days only with a receipt and store credit only - but it is a locally owned store so it's to be expected. I find all the other people who work at the store to be friendly and helpful though. read more

My daughter has been using Dancer's Image for three years now and finds them very reliable. She's always treated with value even in the store's busiest hours (which are often). She mostly uses them to get fitted for pointe shoes and has always been shown attention to detail in fittings - not just focusing on what looks good, but what feels good for her. I was there with my 12 year old ballerina getting ballet slippers and the staff gave her undivided attention while helping her find the right fit. I couldn't be more appreciative of the customer service I received at this store. After ordering two dance bras online, neither fitting, and two days before my daughter's recital, I needed to find a brick and mortar store where I could see them before buying them. Unfortunately, my daughter wasn't available to come with me to try it on, but I was assured they could exchange for size. The bra I bought her turned out to be slightly small so I called to make sure they had the next size up in stock. While on the phone trying to figure out the timing to get back and exchange it before her recital, the owner asked what town we lived in. She offered to bring it to my daughter's dance school that evening. When I said she wasn't there that evening because she had a rehearsal in another location, she offered to bring the bra to my house to exchange it. That kind of customer service is unheard of and they deserve 5 stars for that alone. My daughter ended up having a bra that fit well and she danced beautifully. read more

I purchased a pair of ballroom shoes here about three weeks ago. I am a professional ballroom teacher in the area and needed a new pair quickly. I had the shoes for ONE WEEK and the shoes started to totally fall to pieces. I'm talking toe straps breaking, suede on heels falling off... you name it. As you can imagine I was totally perplexed and very upset. I wasn't sure how the store would handle it because the first time I went in the service was a little iffy. I called the store and the woman on the phone was very pleasant. She told me that she was sorry and to bring them in when I could. I was a little nervous after reading the reviews for this store, but I needed a pair of adult ballet slippers and this was seemingly the only place in Boston that had a guarantee of adult shoes! I have to say I had an awesome experience. The owner sat down with me and I tried on 20 pairs of shoes until we found one that felt perfect. She was so calm and patient even though my fitting went an hour after they closed! I left the store feeling so excited and confident for my first adult ballet lesson. I was also ready to impulse buy tights, leotards, and bags but instead of letting me waste money on items I may not need, she told me to come back after my first lesson when I can see what everyone was wearing. When walking into this store we were pounced on by 2 young ladies. Total turn off. We were looking for pointe shoes, and had an appt for a fitting. We were sent downstairs to the owner, who was sitting in her chair waiting for us. Rude, condescending can't even accurately describe this woman. She will push the most expensive shoe on you, even if your daughter isn't happy with it. Truth be told, this woman has the exclusive rights to sell Suffolk shoes in the area. If she doesn't sell enough, she loses that exclusivity. Hence why she tells you, you should be 2 pair. After an hour of listening her berate my daughter's shoes and the person who fitted her prior (we only didn't go to our original place bc they were on vacation, and we needed shoes for an intensive), we walked out with nothing. I will never go back, and this place will never get my money. There are other fish in the sea.... I'll fish elsewhere. read more

I went to Dancer's Image in search of an outfit for a Beyonce Single Ladies costume. Alyse (I think I've spelled it correctly) was amazing. She went far beyond what was required of my request- not only did she help me search for low cost options, but also gave me ideas for how I could alter the leotard to go for the look I wanted. She also gave me helpful information about the different types of leotards and an idea about what kind of tights would work best. Her advice was so helpful! As another reviewer states, I was also recommended to try on a larger size leotard, but it was made clear that it was only because a specific company made the sizes way too small, and she even apologized (not that she should need to apologize for this company's design choices). I'd rather her give me a size that will fit rather than having me go through multiple tries. I'm not even a dancer and was surprisingly pleased at the level of customer service despite the fact that I wouldn't be a regular customer. I have gone there with my children for ballet slippers and tap shoes. My kids are casual dancers in an afterschool program, so definitely not the serious dancer types. I found the customer service very friendly and knowledgeable. Unlike almost any shoe store, the people who do the fitting really looked at the girls' feet, decided what would be the best option and also listened to them when my daughter said it was uncomfortable. I would prefer to spend an extra dollar or two to get shoes fitted correctly than order something on the web. read more

Great pointe shoe fitting for adults.

If you can put up with the customer service, you will not regret it. Yes, sometimes the customer services are terrible. The owner can TALK, and will not hesitate to complain about staff or other customers. However, I have had nice experiences with her. She is very knowledgable, and can be nice. The rest of the staff can have it's bad moments, but I believe the woman giving the most trouble is no longer there. As for pointe shoe fittings, these women know their stuff. They have all major pointe shoe companies, and are well stocked. I can't stress enough how good they are at fitting pointe shoes. I dance at a smaller studio in Newton, and only dance on pointe for around an hour a week. My first pair was fair (Suffolk Spotlights) and my second pair is very good (Grishko Triumphs). They took into account my dance experience, but focused more so on my feet and what would suit me. Moral of the story is that they are great at pointe shoe fittings, and other shoe fittings, although their atmosphere is hit or miss. They will be very helpful, but wether or not they'll be nice is another question. read more

So I have been in this place about 4 times now. I don't know why I went back again. I have never had a good experience in this dance store. Well, I guess I go back because of the location, but that won't happen again. I went in this dance store a few days ago to get my daughter some dance attire. When ever you walk in there, you are watched like a 'hawk'. I have to say that the teens that work there are great. They are respectful and kind, despite that I always see the older workers yelling at them. The teens offer to help, but then back off and let you shop. I appreciate this. I will share my experience with the adults that work in the store. They are very abrupt and rude at times. One woman she that she would hold the things I had gathered to buy while I continued to look, as she didn't want me to steal, and took them from me. She said something about people being 'two handed'. It took me a bit to realize what she said. That was pretty insulting. I did end up asking for help and the woman insisted that the leotards run big and told me that I shouldn't buy the ones I had in my hand for my daughter. I trusted her opinion and got the smaller ones. Now their receipt says that there is no refunds and to get store credit you had to go back within 5 days. Of course, none of the clothes fit my daughter. They were all too small. So back I went the next day. There was a new woman working here then. I saw one of the teens who offered to help and asked if she needed to hold my bag up front or if I should just bring it up when I picked out new sizes. She said it was fine to bring up after. A few minutes later the woman said she had to take the bag and why didn't I bring it up front. I told her that I already asked. She then went off to yell at the teen. I felt bad. After we picked out our stuff, she tells me that I shouldn't have got those sizes yesterday,that the leotards all run 1-2 sizes too small in a snippy way. My daughters were there then and kind of shocked by the sound of her voice. She then struggled to work the register and started yelling at a teen to help her bag and snapped at everyone around her. We waited for a good 20+ minutes for her to figure things out. She then said that we should have got a discount yesterday, but of course, we didn't. (for dancing at a local studio) She then said we had money left as credit and did I want to buy nylons. I felt bad for the poor line after us. I said that I'd come back. My daughters were like, "mom, forget the change. We're not going back there. It is not worth it." My other experiences there were the same. You are always stared at, made to feel like they think you will steal from them, snapped at and tried to talk into buying crazy expensive stuff. Before these last two visits, I had forgotten the experience and hoped it had gotten better. So I will not be returning to this place. There is a dance place in Wellesley that we liked, that had great employees and apparel. I will definitely return there sometime. It is also a lot less crowded than Dancer's Image and you could see what is in stock more readily. I have also heard there is a dance place in Burlington. Definitely check one of those places out first. You will have less 'headaches' and spend less money most likely. read more

Nope. Sold daughter pointe shoes that were "close enough." Listened to her put down other dancers, dance teachers, mothers of dancers who certainly weren't doing the best for their dancers by sending them to the schools they were, summer dance programs, you name it. Went in for a new pair after "close enough" shoes were dead. Had to go in next day to pick them up after "re-stringing" and "nailing" (yes, that costs extra, along with the toe pads (different ones each visit), the toe spacers that Paula said daughter should have never EVER been dancing without and then two weeks later said should never EVER have been dancing with only 2 weeks later, and then toe tips, of course). Get the shoes home, go to sew them, the left shoe shank is cracked, cracked in multiple places where Paula had nailed them. I called her. She said "the shoes were perfect when they left the store." I told her I would send photos. She said "do that." I did. She said she could replace them if I came right then. Dropped all Saturday afternoon plans AFTER I texted her that I wasn't coming in with my daughter if Paula was going blame my 13 year-old. Told her daughter had not had the shoes on her feet, I don't know what would cause a shoe to crack, but I know she can't dance in a shoe with a cracked shank. Paula texted "no blame." We made the drive. Waited for 10 minutes until Paula came out of some back room. She immediately said, "I've never had a dancer do this to a pair of shoes." I told her, again, my daughter didn't have the shoes on her feet AT ALL. She continued to blame my daughter; told us she had called the dance dance teacher at Brookline Ballet to ask what a teacher would do with a student with feet like my daughter's, feet that would do that to a shoe. My daughter did nothing to the shoe. Paula said she was doing us a favor replacing the shoe that she had put at least 10 nails in (10 in each sho, which is exactly where the cracks were in the shank). As we were leaving, not happy at all, she tried this: "don't be upset, I can't be upset, I'm sick, I have cancer, I take a lot of medications for it." Too bad the previous visit she told us that she had unnecessarily been given chemotherapy because she didn't even have cancer and the chemotherapy caused her to develop neuropathy. Shoes are one thing, blaming children and saying you do/don't have cancer to end a conversation that you don't want to have...bizarre and just not a child- or parent-friendly experience.
