This is an Atlanta staple and after living here for decades, I finally went. My friend is born and…read moreraised, they had nothing but great things to say. Located off of Piedmont Avenue - a one way street, look for the valet sign to pull in on the left. The cafe sits below street level - it's downstairs, like in the basement. But the vibes and energy shout sexy, speakeasy and spot to see new or rising talent. On this visit there wasn't any special guest or talent - it was Open Mic. Sign up and save $10 on the cover at the door. They seat you and servers provide menus for food and drinks. We had the grilled shrimp, others had pizza and light bites. The Texas margaritas were delicious and served strong. The talent was engaging and ranged from poets to singers. Overall, I'd definitely come back and check ahead to see who's performing. With the parking and cover, you invest some cash before you're entertained.

Good amount of seating that gives off a family basement kind of vibe. I'll start with the con: the service here was subpar. We sat in the overflow area and there were tables all around us. The two servers that we saw in the area repeatedly NEVER came to our table to greet us or take our order. My boyfriend ended up having to walk himself to the bar to get a drink and order some food for us. Even once the food came I had to flag her down to get another drink. We were not hidden or hard to see, so that was very disappointing. The comedy show was really good. The comedians were fun and funny. Each one's personality was so different and big and we laughed the whole night. Although good service is huge to me, I'd come back and give it another try because overall I really enjoyed the scene.

My friend and I went on a free Sunday and even ran into some other friends while we were there. We got to watch a youth dance performance featuring all different styles--from kids dancing in suits to a Mary Poppins-themed routine it was so incredibly cute! The art itself really spoke to me. I got to see cultural pieces from my home country that I rarely ever see elsewhere, and it honestly brought tears to my eyes. They were also highlighting a Black woman's art that day; hearing her story and seeing the way she painted up until her passing, alongside works from other Black artists, was profoundly beautiful. This was my second time visiting the High, and I absolutely hope to go more often whenever I have the time!

I especially enjoyed the mix of contemporary and classic works, and the building itself is beautiful with plenty of natural light. We visited on a weekend afternoon and found it busy but still comfortable to navigate. There were plenty of benches throughout for taking a break and really appreciating the artwork. I'd recommend this for a date, solo afternoon, or when you have visitors in town. My biggest tip would be to check the special exhibitions before your visit since they can be a major highlight. Definitely one of Atlanta's gems.

I also didn't plan my festival visit well, so I only did marginally better by showing up. Next time, I'll plan my visit accordingly, and the festival website has all the information you need. I went on Saturday afternoon, and it was sooooo hot. I was not ready for the heat. I would suggest wearing a hat and light, loose clothing. The Emory Healthcare booth had fans, and bless them for that. I walked the circuit of all the booths on East and West Ponce, Clairemont, McDonough and Sycamore. There were a lot of publishing houses, libraries, booksellers and self-published authors represented in the booths. The festival organizers did a great job of putting groups together, i.e. all libraries, child activities, and food in the same area. I sat for a while at the Local Poetry stage, and I enjoyed the poets that I saw. The subjects were a little rough, so I can't say that I left wanting to read more from the poets, but I appreciated their use of language. There are several talks with topics ranging from culinary to revolutionary. Unfortunately, I didn't get to attend ANY of the talks because of my lack of planning. Some of the talks I believe that I would have enjoyed were "Women Take Charge in Sci-Fi," "Homey Don't Play That: The Story of in Living Color and The Black Comedy Revolution," "American Cookie," "Tweeting, Weird and Nice," and "An American Marriage." I believe that anyone could find a topic they'd appreciate. I took Marta so that I wouldn't have to deal with parking, but I don't think parking would be a problem. But you'd have to pay, which I don't like to do. The Decatur Book Festival is in downtown Decatur which is my favorite neighborhood in Atlanta, so you can't go wrong visiting it for any reason, and the Decatur Book Festival is a good reason. It was a splendid Labor Day weekend to soak up the AJC Decatur Book Festival in downtown Decatur. This event is billed as the largest independent book festival in the US and in the top five of book festivals overall. The festival began in 2006 and now has around 80,000 attendees. It's free too, always a plus. I wasn't really familiar with many of the authors, but I learned about some new authors and had a grand time wandering around and spending time snagging heaps of food samples. Hello there, Big Green Egg's pork belly. Many of the vendors are not literary-related; if you're not a library junkie, don't worry, you can still have a dandy time! There are poetry slams, cooking demos, children's activities, workshops, and more. Parking can be a headache in downtown Decatur; MARTA and biking are good alternatives. Check the festival's website and social media for any author cancellations. You can pick up a program at the festival in case you didn't memorize the schedule online. Kidding, it's too huge to memorize. The Marriott conference center was messy though at times since there's a bookstore set up and tons of people either there shopping, waiting to go to a talk, or in line for signings. Regarding bathrooms, I saw Porta Potties a plenty. Glad to have finally checked out (ha) the Decatur Book Festival.
