Had to make the road trip 3/05 for the first day of their 69th anniversary. I got the first fried chicken of the season and it tasted so good! You can save $3 and enjoy it for their Monday special. They have a daily special, Thursday is grilled or fried chicken sandwich combo. Did you know this was one of the first businesses in Hinckley. The best part is how reasonable the prices are. Staff always seem to be enjoying their customers with friendly and prompt service. I will certainly make the trip again for another favorite of mine, the DJ deluxe burger and onion rings. Unfortunately Dairy Joy is now using kiddie cone size for a small cone. i guess they didn't think annyone would notice. Only two fingers fit at the base of the cone. With tax it was $4 for a kiddie/small cone. I went to Bannana split in Aurora the next day and ordered a small cone. 3 fingers fit on the base of the cone. A true small and only $2.80 with tax. The ice cream at both places is great. I cannot afford Dairy Joy. Buyer beware. read more

This spot along Rt 30 in Hinckley is a traditional stop for many families driving home after a weekend at Woodhaven Lakes. They have many frozen treats to choose from that hit the spot on a hot day as well as more substantial diner fare like cheeseburgers and fries. There is usually a line to order but it moves quickly. It has that clean and cute 1950's vibe and a great employer of teenagers. Our grandchildren love it. Good for kids and kids at heart. read more

We used to stop at Dairy Joy on the way home from Sublette for burgers and ice cream. There is a walk up window outside and also the option to order inside. There are table inside and outside. Dairy Joy has been around for decades. They offer many food items, but the burgers and fries are by far the best. The service was friendly, food was great and, of course, we ended with ice cream that was delicious. You feel as if you stepped back into time, small town hospitality, with great food. read more

There's something about neighborhood ice cream places that bring me joy. Dairy itself, however, doesn't bring me much joy... just a little bit of tummy discomfort. So, Dairy Joy? A bit of an oxymoron for me. Thankfully, I was happy here. :) The place itself is pretty perfect: local, roadside ice cream/burger joint with a walk-up window and inside seating (if preferred). Located next to the railroad tracks, it makes for a pretty nostalgic location... especially when the local little league team is here after their Friday night game, running around in the grass and enjoying ice cream. My husband and I each got dipped vanilla cones: cherry for me, chocolate for him. They were the perfect kind of sticky, drippy cones (but not too messy) that goes along with warm summer nights. The menu also has assorted dairy treats, burgers, hot dogs, fries, sodas, the usual. The prices were higher than I expected (a little over $5 for both our small cones), but still much lower than an ice cream chain, and SO much better! If you find yourself out west of the 'burbs on Route 30, make Dairy Joy one of your stops! read more

This place is too cute! The people working here are super nice and friendly. There's a walk-up window to get a quick bite and also a dining area inside and outside to enjoy your snack/meal. I came here for milk shake, which comes in a variety of flavors that can be mixed and matched. I went with a medium strawberry banana shake $2.45 and was thick and delicious. You have the option of strawberry syrup or fresh strawberries. They use real banana in their shakes and I could taste the little chunks. The fried chicken here was also fantastic! For $4, I got a 2 piece chicken snack, which came with fries. The drumstick and the breast were lightly coated and cooked to perfection. Chicken takes about 20 minutes to make, but I wasn't in a hurry and had my shake to keep me occupied. There were tons of other items on the menu to choose from that I'll have to come back and try...burgers, hotdogs, fish, sandwiches, wings, sundaes, banana splits, etc. The pizza puff and the taco puff look good! For us, this place is a nice motorcycle ride from home. Once we arrive they have good food, great prices and a delightful 50's atmosphere. Dairy Joy has been in business since 1957 so they KNOW how to do "50's style". I adore their pork tenderloin sandwich and the "basket" is a really good deal. As far as ice cream goes, they have nothing "bad" on their menu. We try to make it out to Hinckley at least a couple times a year, if for no other reason than to stop into the Dairy Joy. read more

Old School Drive - ins Rock I have been watching this one as we go down Hwy 30 to my sisters house out in the middle of no where land, and I have wanted to stop each time and get a shake, as these type of places make old fashion style shakes with real fruit nit just flavored syrup so I had stopped about 5 miles before this place to put gar in the Motorcycle and I asked my partner you in the mood for a burger ? and he said sure lets check it out so we stopped and there was about 3 other motorcycles and a couple families and some older folks there, they have indoor and outside seating so we choose to sit outside and enjoy the day I got a Italian beef it was ok, I asked for hot peppers and they didn't have Giardiniera instead I got Jalapeno slices, the meat was tender and the bun soft but you know it isn't there specialty, I should of went with the burger my partners burger really looked good, and he scarfed that puppy down so I know he enjoyed it, the fries were fresh and hot He got a strawberry shake with real strawberries in it (they do have syrups) but we went fresh it was good I had to sample it you know, and I got a root beer float and that was damn good also so if you ever find your self out here in the summer time stop on in as I think they close for the winter read more

My dad has been coming to Dairy Joy his whole life and brought us when we were little. Whenever we drove past the car would "magically" turn into the Dairy Joy parking lot. My family always looks forward to eating at Dairy Joy whether it is a delicious burger or a chocolate soda! A small town drive-in. Interesting interior, with kitschy decor. A less than enthusiastic staff that performed just at necessary. No thank you, you're welcome, or come again. There is a little advertised $1 add on fee for using a debit card. The notice is on the back of a business card taped in the bottom corner of order window. The food is directly off the supply truck, no imagination, nothing special, thaw out, add water, open box.... But at least it's expensive. $8 for a double burger, two patties the size of McDonalds little burgers (they forgot to put on the cheese as ordered) with cheap leathery bacon, a side of fries, a tiny side of awful coleslaw, and a medium soda. The soda would have been a small ANYWHERE else. Thank goodness I paid cash or it would have been $9. There are plenty of great places to eat in Hinckley, this just isn't one of them. read more

The interior of their shop has some cool historical decor of the store and area. If you stay long enough you'll watch a train streak by on the tracks just in back of the restaurant. Everyone knows Hinckley, IL by the Dairy Joy, an institution for over 70 years! Trandition, but tiny soft ice cream drive up. No girls on skates, you skate to the window or walk inside. Why they don't run year round is a shame, or have a drive through - but thanks to the trains, and the squeeze with route 30 - NO ROOM IN the INN! GREAT BASIC DRIVE IN with some Memorabilia! Once done so west, check out the antiques on the south side of Rt 30 (Lincoln Ave in town) But NOT the Lincoln Highway, that's north of the town. But the Headquarters for the Lincoln Highway Association is not far - less than 50 miles as the crow flies! Check the food, beverages - Especially the Brown Pub at the northwest end of town across from the Fresh Market. Wave to the police during the day and don't HONK ever, the trains Do WAY TOO MUCH OF THAT! I'm tempted to through their own ballast back at them. This place has made a HUGE turnaround. I avoided going here in the past. The old owners were rude the employees were not friendly. Now it has changed hands and the new owner is great. The staff is friendly. They did some remodeling over the winter and looks great. They have Facebook specials that were a great deal. Now I see they are going to have cruise nights, that's even better. Food is good. Average frozen to fryer food but the ice cream is great. Good job on turning the dairy joy around. read more

Great, little retro place. Came here for a shake but the food was awesome. Great burgers and they have fried cheese balls! Woo hoo! You can eat in or outside. They have a surprisingly pretty large menu. Burgers, dogs, etc. but they also have a bunch of salads too and a bunch of finger foods so you can pretend you are not eating much. Of course, I went fo the burger, shake and cheese balls! Great place to bring the kids and enjoy a nice, inexpensive lunch in rural kane county. A simple pleasure. read more

I have to say the chocolate dipped (vanilla) ice cream cone was one of the best I've had in a long time. I loved the fact the chocolate tasted like a melted Hersey's chocolate bar and not some weird canned flavor. The vanilla ice cream was so smooth and delicious. Often you go to places and the two flavors blend so much that you can't tell which is which. But the texture and flavor of this cone went perfectly together. This is a great little place to grab a bite in the summer! Everything is good - shakes, fried chicken, burgers, fried mushrooms. And the onion rings are literally the best I've ever had. Dairy Joy is a well known name in Hinckley and one of the best places to eat, but sadly it's not open during the winter season and recently opened up again. They have recently redone the place, replacing tables, menu is electronic, replaced things on the wall and more. They have normal food and are well known for there ice cream. read more

When we pulled up we could hear the music playing in the parking lot, walking in the door was like steeping back into the 50's. Diner is so cute and clean, service is friendly and fast. As a recent transplant to the area I was so happy to stumble upon Dairy Joy. My husband and I have found ourselves eating here quite frequently and between the two of us, we have have tried just about everything on their menu. I must say everything is very tasty but my favorite thing to order is the fried chicken. I love it! The fried chicken is made to order and is moist and tender.
