I have decided to create a whole new listing for this place for a few reasons:…read more 1) After many attempts to mark the original listing as "NOT closed", Yelp has decided to ignore my pleas, making it impossible to check in here. 2) The bar is under completely new management and is a totally different bar than it was when I first reviewed it. I figured: a new day, a new dawn, a new listing. If that is fine and dandy with the powers that be I will continue with my review. Arriba arriba!! I love what they have done with the place! On the Rocks now has two rooms! The main bar area and the DJ room. The pool tables have been moved to make way for dancing! They play Latin music here now, as well as typical top 40. There are always people salsa dancing (I wish I could) and I do my own version of dancing which is basically strutting around the dance floor to (kind of) the beat. Look, I can't dance that well, okay? I have yet to name my style of dancing but it WILL take the world by storm one of these days. White girl strut (trademark pending!)? I don't know. I'm working on it. The space next to the dance floor has been raised onto a platform that is now complete with a sofa for relaxing and hanging out. There is also a sitting area in the DJ room if you want to be closer to the music. Overall the bar is clean and the people are super nice and friendly. The Bud Light limes (Westbank gonna Westbank) have been replaced by Modelo, which is fine by me. Definitely one of the better Westbank hangouts, so be sure to drop in and check it out.

I have been to many different bars in my life. On the Rocks Lounge is one of the more unique places…read morethat I have visited. A friend recommended this bar so I gave it a shot. Upon walking up I was advised that I would have to be frisked prior to entry. This is normally a sign telling me to leave immediately, but I decided to give it a shot. As far as friskings go (I've been frisked a lot), this was rather uneventful. He could have done a better job if he was genuinely searching for weapons, but I guess it was more of a deterrent than anything else. Once inside I learned that this was not a place for me. The bar is separated into two different areas. One room contained the DJ, pool tables and an incredibly disturbing laser light show. It reminded me of the laser shows I used to attend in New Orleans East, but with much different music. The DJ didn't seem to speak English so requesting that he play "Marrero" by MC Thick was somewhat pointless. The DJ also made frequent use of some sort of synthetic horn noise that was horrendous. The second room is where the dance floor, bar and odd stage area were. The dance floor was huge. If one wanted to dance to the beat, there was plenty of room. The bar wasn't bad and there were a couple of cocktail waitresses ensuring you got the beer you wanted. The stage area was odd. There were a couple of couches, but there was also some sort of pole as well. While everyone I encountered was friendly, communication was difficult. The cocktail waitresses spoke limited English and most of the customers were conversing in Spanish. Would I go back to On the Rocks? Maybe, but there are many other WB bars I would rather visit.

To call Roaring 20s merely a "dive bar" would be a disservice. No, we're talking *dive lounge* and…read moreI mean this as the highest compliment. Normally, I avoid day drinking. I think it's because I just love night drinking so much. Well, I can get past that because Roaring 20s makes you feel like it's always nighttime! The cave-like interior is dark with dim red lighting. It feels like you're entering someone's basement rec room in the mid 70s, old couch in a corner, vinyl bar stools, wood paneling and low ceilings and all. Think of Ted Knight's daughters' ultra cool basement pad in Too Close For Comfort, only realllly fucking dark. Visits from Monroe not included. I dare you to *not* stay and hang out, even if the sun is shining brightly outside (stay a couple hours and maybe it'll be dark by the time you leave). So, you ring the bell, the bartender buzzes you in, and you walk past a small group of friendly older gents sitting at the bar. A quick perusal and no skinny jeans-wearing hipster in sight. So, no, not a dive bar at all as we know 'em today. Thankfully. As a gal, sometimes you might feel odd walking into a place where you the only one. You might even worry for a second if you've just entered a men's-only club. But! "Unescorted ladies" are not only welcomed at Roaring 20s, they get their second drink for free (that's what the little paper cup that the bartender puts in front of you means)! And don't even think for a second you'll be fending off undesirable come ons from the regulars. It's very much be and let be here. In a world full of contrived dive bars, Roaring 20s stands out as a comfortable place for "unescorted ladies," is cheap, allows smoking (the air purifier does a decent job), has a friendly clientele and feels like the elusive "real deal."

Roaring 20's is a great example of a West Bank dive bar…read more I have been wanting to try Roaring 20's for years. I was never brave enough to venture in, but recently read a review (thanks Joi) that renewed my interest. Since it was fresh on my mind, and my friend had never been there either, we made the long trek to Terrytown. We pulled in around 5 a.m. on a Saturday night and the place looked packed. We walked to the door and pushed the buzzer. The buzzer adds an exclusive feel and makes you feel like you're being judged before you enter. When they didn't immediately open the door, I became self conscious that I wasn't cool enough or properly attired. Lucky for us, the bartender had stepped away from the buzzer and a friendly patron opened the door. When we walked to the bar the bartender shook our hands and introduced herself as Sandy. Sandy told us that she knew as soon as we walked in that we had never been there before. She was very friendly and welcoming. She explained that we should make ourselves at home and have fun. She must have assumed we were fancy people because when I ordered water, she explained that they only had tap water and hoped that was ok. I told her that we had read about the bar on the internet, but she just laughed as if it was impossible. The bar had a small dance floor, jukebox and two couches. What made this bar even better was the woman taking a nap on one of the couches. This was a great experience and was everything I imagined it would be. It is too bad that it took a yelp review for me to build up the nerve to go. If you want a laid back dive bar, I recommend you give Roaring 20's a try.
