After the beach in Niantic we stopped by Dad's Restaurant for a late lunch. Dad's has been a staple in the area for over 60 years. They must have relocated to a new property because this restaurant looks brand new. We were seated outside, depending on which way you're turned you may have the view of the Niantic Bay. Here there's no table service, you order at the counter, then they call your order number, then you can pick up your tray. I got the Chowder and the fish tacos. The others got the Fish and Chips. This Chowder was very good, super fresh, flavorful and not too salty. The fish tacos were very generously filled, but they were very bland in flavor. Squeezing some fresh lime juice helped bring out a bit of the flavor. The Fish & Chips came out in huge portions. There was a sign that they had free ice cream. I was pretty impressed by the flavor options. We got strawberry cheesecake, some type of Oreo with peanut butter and chocolate. This ice cream was super flavorful, rich and creamy. Maybe they're giving it away to make room for some new fall flavors. We enjoyed sitting outside on the patio. I would recommend dining at Dad's.

Beautiful day to take the hot rod down to Niantic

Since I was very young, my parents would bring me here on our trips down to the shore. I loved it. Over time, the meals at Dad's deteriorated to the point of being super expensive, and not good at all. Skippers a few doors down, was a better choice. So here I am three years later at the newly reopened Dad's in Niantic. Newly remodeled, this restaurant has a fresh look with a beautiful outdoor dining area overlooking the Niantic Bay Unfortunately, that's where all the good stops I came here specifically for the whole bellies. Whole belly clams that is. What I received were almost like clam strips with a little bit of belly attached, almost like they were super small or babies. These were not cheap. An order plus a soda was over $23 with the tip. I bet there was 4 ounces of clams in this order Huge disappointment in the seafood. Dad's, you need to step it up. Too much competition in the Niantic area for you to fall short in a beautiful environment and with a beautiful restaurant. I will return in the fall before you close for the season to double check and see if you were improved Until then, I don't see any reason to stop here for a bite to eat

Came back for a second time, and as promised, I tried the fried shrimp. It is AMAZING, no tails!! Honestly, it was so much food that I needed to take three shrimp home with me. I also tried the Shipwreck's Daughter, which is an IPA and paired nicely with the meal. I am a huge fan of Dad's and whenever I go, there are quite a few people there! Food came out in less than ten minutes. Make sure you sit on the deck!!

Nice place to grab a bite, big deck with about 15 tables overlooks the water. Very clean.

Me and my family went here a couple days ago, and we ordered the fish and chips platter and the fish sandwich. The portions were huge, but the fish was not as fresh as Skippers fish, and chips, which is just down the road. The fries were not salted at all and had a yellow color to them. Although the atmosphere was very good and their new patio is amazing. The staff were very quick and even double checked our order for us and read it out loud. Also the food came out in 15 minutes. Overall, I would come back again.

We've been going to Dad's for years and so we decided to take a ride to see the newly renovated restaurant. It's obvious that the owner put a lot of thought into the renovation and the results are beautiful; especially the indoor restrooms. The inside dining area is light and open and the Al Fresco dining on the deck is lovely. It's still a casual place to eat, where you order at the counter and they call your number to pick up your food. Hubby had the whole belly clams and he dove in before I could get a picture of his full platter. Served with excellent, crispy fries and a small side of coleslaw. I'm not a fan of whole bellies, but he loves them. Although they were a tad on the larger size (he likes them somewhat small to medium), he said they had great flavor. Market price that day was $32. The coleslaw is really good. My sister had the cod tacos which had generous sized portions of delicious cod, battered and fried. I had the shrimp tacos. 3 fish tacos for $16 was a bargain in my opinion! The fish & shrimp were fresh and perfectly cooked. The tacos had a nice, spicy sauce on them. We would definitely go back again just for these! Plenty of off street parking and a nice family place to eat. Well done to the owner!

Great summer stop for lunch. Not the best view but the ocean is across the street. The menu is pretty extensive for a shack and the food is good. The ambience inside embodies summer fun. I had the tuna salad roll which was was pretty tasty and a decent size. Don't forget to feed the animals!

Seafood strip dinner- INSANE amount of food

Heard from the boss about this place and said we had to try it out. I must say that I wasn't disappointed! Plentiful food at reasonable prices. I got the seafood strip dinner, and boy did my eyes bulge. I'm a certified member of the clean plate club, but I had to tap out for this one. I must note that they were not very strict with customers and masks during this pandemic. I understand that patrons should not have to wear masks at their tables (duh) but I noticed several people taking off their masks as they were coming in. Let's be smart, guys!

This is where we ordered our food.

So, since the Old Saybrook location closed, we set our sights on visiting the Niantic location, looking forward to what we missed so much. Sadly, this was one of the worst experiences we have had! Our order consisted of a kid's hot dog platter, an adult hot dog, side of onion rings, 2 small coleslaws and a side of clam strips. Let's begin with the hot dogs...Both the kids and adult hot dogs were the same size in different buns. The adult in a foot long bun and the kids in a regular bun. Again, same size hot dog inside. Moving on to the onion rings...for $7.00, I counted 19 shoestring onion rings. Not a nice pile, but flatly 19 and shoestring ones are incredibly deliciously thin. The kids platter arrived with just the hot dog on it. No fries. When I went back, I was told it did not come with fries. I disagreed and after some time, curly fries were placed next to the hot dog. I asked about regular fries and I was told that they did not carry regular ones. The nice boy behind this all stated that they did and it was corrected. Hot dog was now ice cold. My side of clam strips for $14 consisted of maybe a cup of clams. Sad portion! We ate what we could shaking our heads in disappointment. So sad our expectations were dashed! When we left, it was decided that a short walk (and I mean short because my mother can't balance for long) might be nice in order to forget the fiasco at the restaurant. As soon as we stepped away from the car, we were chased by their parking guard who said that we could no longer park there if we left the car. I explained that we had just spent almost $70 in their establishment and would be taking a short walk. She continued to chase us. We kept walking. Our walk took approximately 7 minutes. Upon our return, the man parked next to us entered his car with 2 bags and coffees from Sift Bakery. Obviously NOT a Skippers customer, yet he was not chased! So, sadly, we will NEVER again be visiting Skippers in Niantic. Johnny Ad's is meh, but this was way worse. I hope that they can fix things so that others can still enjoy eating there.

I have struggled with whether to write this review because this has become one of our favorite…read morelocal restaurants over the last year. In fact, one of the reasons we kept coming back was because this was one of the very few local restaurants that I believed truly understood celiac disease and took gluten-free dining seriously. However, as someone with celiac disease, I feel a responsibility to share my experience because what I have encountered goes far beyond a one-time mistake. Several months ago, we ordered takeout and I tested three separate items that were represented as gluten-free: tacos, a wedge salad, and a pop tart dessert. Most was already naturally gluten free. All three tested positive for gluten. These tests are not cheap, costing approximately $12 each, so this was not something I did lightly. I contacted the restaurant and spoke directly with the head chef. She was professional, understanding, and seemed genuinely concerned. She thanked me for bringing it to her attention and even mentioned that she planned to order a test herself because she could not understand how those items would contain gluten. Because of that conversation, I chose not to leave a review. I genuinely believed the issue would be investigated and corrected, and I wanted to give the restaurant the opportunity to make things right. Unfortunately, a later visit resulted in a positive gluten test on the smoked fish appetizer. Most recently, I returned again and tested several items. The calamari tested negative, but my gluten-free tacos once again tested positive for gluten. At this point, I have simply been glutened one too many times by a restaurant that I genuinely wanted to trust. What makes this especially difficult is that this restaurant presents itself as understanding celiac disease. I was told that members of the restaurant's family, including a daughter, have celiac disease. Hearing that gave me confidence that gluten-free orders would be taken seriously and that proper precautions would be in place. That is what makes these repeated positive gluten tests so confusing and disappointing. When a restaurant claims to understand celiac disease, I expect more than simply offering gluten-free menu items. I expect systems that actually prevent gluten contamination. After multiple positive gluten tests across multiple visits and after bringing my concerns directly to management months ago, it is difficult for me to reconcile those claims with my actual experiences. During my most recent visit, the waitress was kind and helpful, and I appreciate the way she handled the situation. However, I was told that a manager would come speak with me, and no manager ever did. My tacos were removed because they tested positive for gluten, yet I was still charged for them after deciding to take them home (for my non celiac hubby) rather than have them thrown away. In the end, I received a discount, but only after spending nearly $50 on gluten tests during that visit alone. As I write this, I am sitting here sad, frustrated, and in pain, knowing exactly what the next couple of weeks are likely going to look like for me. People often do not see what happens after someone with celiac disease is exposed to gluten. We do not go into anaphylaxis in the restaurant. We go home and suffer through the consequences alone. The symptoms may not be immediately visible to others, but the physical toll is very real. Every restaurant can make a mistake. My concern is not a single mistake. My concern is a repeated pattern over multiple visits, over several months, after the issue was brought directly to the restaurant's attention. I truly wanted to continue supporting this restaurant. I truly wanted to be able to recommend it to others in the celiac community. Unfortunately, after repeated positive gluten tests, repeated gluten exposures, and no evidence that the underlying problem has been corrected, I cannot in good conscience recommend this restaurant to anyone with celiac disease or anyone who requires a truly gluten-free meal for medical reasons.
