Normally you would expect a station like this to have multiple options but really this one only has a couple of kiosk style places. It's not nothing, but more limited than I would expect. However, the signage is very good and getting to your train doesn't seem to be an issue. The platforms are high so there is no huge step up to your train. As a terminal station for most trains it's also a great place to depart from as you typically get extra time to board.

I USED THIS CENTRAL STATION A FEW TIMES DURING MY STAY IN MUNICH…read more=============================== My husband and I took one of the regional ICE (white and red) trains from Munich to Stuttgart on Monday, April 20th, because I had tickets for the Porsche Factory tour. Everything worked out pretty well, but you will need the PIN for any credit cards you use in the machines to buy tickets. We didn't have that. We then had to find out where the information office was and purchase tickets at the counter. You could also buy your tickets in advance on one of the aps, but I couldn't get the DB so to work at all when in Munich even with a full cellular plan. Trainline seemed to work a lot better. My main point is that you probably shouldn't wait until the last minute if you need to be in another city at a set time. Also, carry lots of Euro coins while in Germany. You have to pay 1 1/2 Euros at this station to use the restroom.

The train comes every 10 minutes during commuter times, Monday to Friday or just every 20 minutes. There are only ticket machines here, the locals know which ticket to buy when purchasing a ticket. If you're a tourist, my advice is to search online before hand which ticket to buy when buying a ticket, or just ask for help from a person waiting on the platform, the people are usually helpful and if you don't speak German, most of the people are willing to help in English.

In general, it provides good transportation in Munich. But it is fairly expensive (about 10.4…read moreEuros (about $16) for a ride from the train station to the airport). And there are traps for the unwary! There are essentially no personnel to help, and ticket purchases are done in automated kiosks with unclear instructions. One pitfall is that the tickets are only good for 4 hours, unless you specifically buy an "advanced ticket" and then validate it when entering the platform. It is assumed you understand this nuance, but if you come from a place iike NYC or Wash DC (wheremetro/subway tickets are good forever and are considered used only when you enter the startion) you can find yourself out of luck and out considerable funds. We had the experience of buying 4 tickets not realizing this, and when we tried to use them the next day, discovered we had to buy NEW tickets and were basically out the 40 Euros (about $60 bucks!!) for the now useless tickets we bought the night before and had to purchase new tickets!. Attempts to rectify this at the main train station or airport "help" desks were unsuccessful. The people were rude, rigid, and incredibly unhelpful. I am still trying to get reimbursed by writing to the S DB, but am so far unsuccessful. Beware!

I have never seen a less organized cluster of incompetence and it only got worse as I tried to get on a replacement bus. There were three people directing traffic and they were simply overwhelmed with the load of passengers that just kept arriving and arriving and arriving. No organization, no good announcements, and the people were no better. They were pushing, shoving and pretty much elbowing people to get on the rare buses that were slowly arriving. After about 30 minutes of watching this and seeing no real progress, when a taxi pulled up and said "Paid" I jumped on it. I shouted "Share ride!" and three others got in with me. For €20, I was driven to the main Munich train station. Seriously, Munich. Failures happen. Have a better way of dealing with it. About the ONLY good thing is that it was easy to follow the signs from baggage claim to the train station. [Review 11994 overall, 1777 of 2019.]

We took many a train to and from our second "home base", Marienplatz. The thing that I loved about starting and ending at Ostbhanhof was the fact that we could take practically any train - going in the correct direction, of course - if we wanted to stop at Marienplatz. That meant we rarely had to wait for a train, which was an added bonus, given we were there in the middle of winter, and there is no shelter from the cold, wind and rain on the platforms. Signage is plentiful, there are plenty of ticket machines scattered throughout the station, and one can buy anything from pastries and coffee to lotions and toothpaste without having to leave the relative warmth of the station itself. Our last train out of Ostbahnhof was the one to Salzburg, so we were able to connect locally as well as "internationally". It definitely made it easy for weary travelers, with just a bit of German language on their side.
