It's fine, it's a train station. However, for a major station in a major city, it's pretty disappointing in terms of things like availability of food or bars or cafes. Normally you would expect a station like this to have multiple options but really this one only has a couple of kiosk style places. It's not nothing, but more limited than I would expect. However, the signage is very good and getting to your train doesn't seem to be an issue. The platforms are high so there is no huge step up to your train. As a terminal station for most trains it's also a great place to depart from as you typically get extra time to board. read more

I USED THIS CENTRAL STATION A FEW TIMES DURING MY STAY IN MUNICH =============================== My husband and I took one of the regional ICE (white and red) trains from Munich to Stuttgart on Monday, April 20th, because I had tickets for the Porsche Factory tour. Everything worked out pretty well, but you will need the PIN for any credit cards you use in the machines to buy tickets. We didn't have that. We then had to find out where the information office was and purchase tickets at the counter. You could also buy your tickets in advance on one of the aps, but I couldn't get the DB ap to work at all when in Munich even with a full cellular plan. Trainline seemed to work a lot better. My main point is that you probably shouldn't wait until the last minute if you need to be in another city at a set time. Also, carry lots of Euro coins while in Germany. You have to pay 1 1/2 Euros at this station to use the restroom. read more

Just a normal train station, but it's huge and has like a shopping mall within in. There's McDonald's, dunkin, edeka and more just to name a few. Tons of places to grab a sandwich or drink and go on your way. Although it's busy it's well organized. The first set of lockers we tried didn't seem to work. We walked further down and found some more available. It costs 6€ for the big locker. 7/9/2024 - took an Uber for 13 euros from the Hotel Isartor for a 15 minute drive instead of the bus or U-train. Landed in the center of Munich Train Central Station. Off memory, tracks 5-21 is visible. Have to walk all the way down the halls to you see sign for 22-29. There is an information booth inside if you have questions, a Starbucks a few places to grab food and drinks to save money than buying in the train. No issues. Have fun in your travels. We had a trip to Stuggart from here. Tickets were easy to purchase from the self serve kiosk. Although our Concierge mentioned it can get busy and, if so, to use the DSB app. 29 Platforms with a Standard amount of shops/restaurants. A couple of Cafes including a Starbucks, sandwich shops and small grocery store. Not much for seating or waiting areas. Although it was crowded at 10:30 on a Thursday morning, we were able to navigate getting tickets less than a half hour before our trip. Our train departed on time. read more

This train station is all about location, location, location. While one would assume that the main train station in most major German cities would be centrally located, one would sometimes be wrong. (I'm looking askance at you, Berlin.) It's a short walk to Karlsplatz, one of the kind of grand entrances to and plazas of Munich's Old Town, which is a roughly round part of the city that used to be the entirety of the city itself, surrounded by defensive walls in medieval times. Of the large German cities I've visited (Bonn, Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, and Stuttgart), Cologne and Munich feel and look the oldest. In Munich's case, that's partially due to being largely spared from the worst of Allied bombing during World War II. I know, I know, there was a lot of damage to Munich during the war; but compared to places like Hamburg, Berlin, and especially Dresden, Munich made it out relatively well. I've traveled from Berlin and to and from Stuttgart here. Although it seems to be laid out intuitively, it's not. All the tracks run east-west, but there are multiple levels, and some of the platforms are outdoors. It also looks very dirty when compared to, say, Hamburg's Hauptbahnhof, especially underground. It doesn't feel unsafe, per se, just grimy. read more

Easily found our platform abs grabbed a coffee and snacks before our train departed. Friendly and helpful staff, great signage everywhere, and on time trains are just standard in Europe making travel so easy and cheap! Love it. read more

I swear this has to be the busiest train station in all of Germany! People everywhere, at all hours of the day. Also, as mentioned, the signage isn't great. We had to return a rental car here and it took forever to find the business, because it was upstairs on a balcony. I can't even tell you how many times I was in this station and never knew there was an upstairs! :/ There are restaurants, and a few little shops on the main level, in case you get hungry waiting, or if you forgot something. The employees were very helpful to us, guiding us to the correct track for our train to Berlin, because again, poor signage, and I don't know if we would have found it otherwise. The station is not very far from the Theresienwiese, so no matter where you are coming from, just know that once you hit the Bahnhof, you're almost there! Reserved our tickets online and had QR code, reserved seats. They scanned QR codes later on in the trip and checked passenger tickets. Plenty of overhead space for luggage and backpacks. Toilets on board. Slight AC but got hot later in the morning. There are outlets to charge electronic, small table to put stuff on, and a small trash basket to throw away wrappers and trash. Clean and tidy, comfortable. They announced each stop and if they were on scheduled or the number of minutes delayed in both German and English. Finding our correct wagon and seats was a bit confusing; no conductors or staff to help navigate so you have to figure it out yourself. read more

Incredibly busy train station - even on Sunday. German trains arrive and leave ON TIME. Just for future reference, if you're riding first class, don't wait way down by the initial entrance to the track. There are 2 first class compartments and they are at the front of the train. I tried to explain this to the man, but no eschuca nada. So now we're running like idiots with heavy luggage to the front of the train. To top it off, the man has lost our paper tickets. Germans want that ticket, and you must have it BEFORE you enter. Always have a pic of your E-ticket readily available. I connected through here a bunch of times as our Airbnb was outside the city but accessible by S-Bahn. The Hauptbahnhof is the central station of Munich and everything stops here. Trams, buses, underground, commuter and regional trains. It is very much the center of activity. As such, the station is super busy and packed with people at all times of the day and night. Excellent signage with easy to understand icons that show you how to get from one transportation mode to another. Lots of self-service kiosks that sell tickets. Lots of food and shopping opportunities. It's an organized chaos. If you don't know where you're headed and still trying to work it out, may I suggest that you please step to the side and out of the flow of traffic? The only reason for my 4 star review is the condition of the train station elevators- every time we used them, they smelled terrible. Other elevators we used in Munich were clean. This is a really big train station. I think it's the main station in Munich. It's got ton of food options and little mini grocery stores inside. There's also lockers and lots of bike parking and taxis outside. It's very accessible and there are always trains going. You can get tickets there. It's reasonably clean and seems safe. read more

Google maps was right on for navigating from here to my AirBNB but a bit off in navigating to this station from my AirBNB. There was construction going on outside so that made navigating around all the barriers with luggage more challenging than it would have been otherwise. I walked all the way from this station to my AirBNB as it was a pleasant day and I needed to stretch my legs. I could have also have taken the U-Bahnhof to the Goetheplatz and would have been right next to my AirBNB and I later did take it from Goetheplatz to the Hauptbahnhof on my departure and that seems to have confused my Google maps for some reason which had performed quite admirably up until that time; the navigation was a good two blocks off so Google y'all can maybe get to work fixing that navigation error ASAP for me alright as we need accurate navigation :) The Hauptbahnhof itself was quite nice inside while outside it looks like an old 70's building and had a respectable amount of retail options which, when my ICE to Frankfurt got cancelled, I had a lot of time to explore. Overall this station had more retail options than any other station in Europe or the UK that I have been to so there are certainly far worse places to have a travel delay. read more

I love traveling by trains in Germany for its efficient operation and Munich hbf is a good example of how nicely run here. Signs are throughout and easy to understand. This particular station connects long distance as well as U and S burn for local travels. If in doubt, ask any DB staff for help and they are kind and speak good English. Buying a ticket can get confusing and be sure to buy a proper ticket. After I boarded a train here, a DB staff came on board to check on tickets. I knew this from prior travels but a lady in front of me didn't validate her ticket before boarding and she was fined 60€. A man sitting across from me didn't buy tickets as he claimed he didn't have time to purchase a ticket ahead of time. He screamed and complained, a DB staff ended up calling for security. They quickly process his passport from nearby EU country to give him a fine of 60€. When I doubt, ask for help and don't forget to validate your ticket before going to a platform. read more

All roads lead to the Haupbahnhof. For all my recent visits to Munich, I've stayed at a hotel within a couple blocks of the train station. So my day typically begins and ends at the station. When arriving at the Munich Airport, you can pretty easily hop on the S1 or S8 line to Munich's main train station for 10 Euro and a 45 minute trip. Once at the train station, if your hotel isn't close by, the majority of local transportation lines go through this station, so you can relatively easily make connections... if you can figure out the signs and ticketing booths. For some reason, this always takes a bit of sorting out. I don't have nearly as many issues using public transportation in the rest of world, but Munich always makes me work for it. And in my defense, it also took a bit of work for my local friend. The services at the station are pretty good, with high marks for the food options. There are kiosks throughout the station, but one primary food court that offers everything from sushi to Italian food and seating from bar stools to a restaurant with linen tablecloths. In the main concourse there is also a kiosk with salads and vegetarian options from the U.K., dean & david. Of course, the fast food options are also here (Starbucks, Burger King, etc.), but my two favorite things are the Currywurst kiosk just outside the station on Bayernstrasse, Esspunkt, and the stands inside that sells candied nuts. These are pretty much my two first stops on every visit to Munich. There is a travel office, money changer and lockers for your luggage. The station is also non-smoking which was a pleasant surprise. This station is roughly a 10-15 minute walk to Marienplatz and some of Munich's most popular tourist attractions and shopping. You can also hop the S-bahn one stop if you don't want to walk. If only Germany's world famous precision and logic applied to its signage and ticketing, my home-away-from-home in Munich would get five stars. read more

This is a large, busy train station where we took an ICE train from here to Nurenburg. There's no need to get to the station super early, unless you're going to get a bite to eat beforehand. There's plenty of places to eat, from Doners, Asian, pizza, snacks, sandwiches, even Burger King and Subway. There's also plenty of kiosks to pick up souvenirs, coffee, and magazines. The trains are punctual, as that's how the Germans are. The information desk isn't always the most helpful, but eventually your question can get answered. There's also a great Starbucks if you're looking for those ICON mugs. read more

Full disclosure, I'm a train geek. I love trains, train stations, Soul Train...anything related to trains. They fascinate me and this station fascinates me as well. On the surface (meaning above ground) it is fairly orderly. Platforms are right there, well lit by a glass roof. There are excellent options for food and shopping. I really liked some cream puff thing I got at a bakery kiosk. I also bought water here, a Tyrolean hat and other fun stuff. You could really spend a day shopping here! When coming back from the Weisn, I had to use the loo and there was a clean one down near the S Bahn platform that cost a Euro to use but it was clean and well supplied with hand sanitizer. Now, once you go below the surface, things are a little different. There are a ton of train lines, (U Bahn and S Bahn) that you can transfer to here but there's a lot of construction and to be honest, the signage rivals Penn Station in NYC for least valuable information provided by signs. However, you can find your way if you just keep looking hard enough. The central location is perfect and I made this my base station whenever I was out and about. Munich should be proud of this station. It's far superior to places like Penn Station in NYC and Waterloo Station in London (although for charm, it cannot compare to Grand Central). Now, you and I both know that often you will find some unsavory characters hanging out at train stations, but here they seemed to be at a minimum It was more commuters, tourists and kids traveling around Europe with giant backpacks that they don't seem to realize they are wearing because they swing them around without having a clue that they might be hitting bystanders. So for cleanliness, convenience and a feeling of security, I grant Hauptbahnhof four stars. read more

Just like any Central Station in other big cities all over the world, this one is grimy and has all sorts of smells but you're not here for sight seeing or to enjoy the aromas. Thinking about it, this station isn't so bad compared to Roma Termini - now, that place is gross! You can catch the metro and the train here. Expect locals to be in a hurry and tourists taking all sorts of pictures and blocking your way as if they have nowhere important to go to. They have a lot of food options from pastries, pizzas, pretzels, candies, wursts, desserts, frites, salads to sandwiches. If you must, they also have Starbucks, McDonald's and Burger King. They also have stores inside the station and is connected to Karstadt which is a department store. What's great about this station is that it's very efficient and trains/metro are at least 98% on time. During the day, they have people at the information booth on the regional train platforms - they can give you a map of the metro stations but don't ask them for directions/how to from station A to station B. They'll most likely give you wrong information so always use common sense and better judgment like we did. read more

If you miss your train, the Munich HBF isn't a bad place to be stuck (please don't remind me how I know this)! It's clean, bustling with activity, and loaded with scores of food and shopping options. The station is sort of located on the outskirts of Munich city so if you're headed into the Old Town area (where all the gorgeous tourist things are), you'll have to take a taxi or Uber ride into town because it's too far to walk. Germans take pride in the efficiency of their rail system, so don't show up even one second late or risk watching your train pull out of the station without you. read more

This is a reasonably good train station. It is large and therefore offers a significant number of amenities. The signage is decent and there are a large number of connections to various places in the region. It is also a great option to initiate long distance train travel. However, along with the positives of a large station, there are also the disadvantages. It is busy and crowded. It can also be a little intimidating in trying to find where you need to be, especially with a connection. The aesthetics are OK with an airy design. However, it can also feel like a warehouse. The loft area is nice enough and has some interesting shops and eateries. The approach to the station by car is decent and it is easily accessible by foot if you are in city center. Of course, it is also easily reached by U-Bahn. If you are visiting Munich and want a way to get to the central area, the train station is a very good option. It effectively brings you right to the area of primary interest as it is very close to Marienplatz and Altstadt. The area around the station also features several good restaurants and shops. read more

München Hauptbahnhof is the main Railway Station in Munich, due to restricted trading hours for stores where they're forced to close on Sunday's, many train centres are built up like mini shopping malls as operating hours are different here. I'm really surprised I never got round to reviewing this station from my trip to Munich which was a while ago now. München Hauptbahnhof offers a large number of services including Underground, tram and train. There are multiple places to grab food and drink here including Dunkin, Starbucks, McDonald's and Subway. Some stores that are based here include Claire's and Kiko Milano, there's even a hotel as part of the station. There are also other hotels nearby, including the Hotel Regent where I stayed during my time in Munich The station was actually rebuilt after the second world war in 1960, but it still isn't as nice to look at and even around the concourse compared to other stations built at around the same time, even more, old-fashioned style, historic stations are easier on the eye such as Amsterdam and Stockholm. One of the better train stations I've been to for food across the world with a decent amount of services too, but as a train station overall it is virtually average. Due to how convenient and useful the station was for me (even though it did appear to be understaffed and the staff they did have didn't seem overly friendly), I do feel a slightly generous four-star rating is in order. read more

This station has a nice grocery store. The help desk is located next to the ICE trains and tickets can be purchased at kiosks and at the central ticket area that is across from the help desk. The agents speak English and are helpful. Make SURE to take a number as soon as you walk in and don't lose the slip of paper. No number, no paper, no service. I recommend you install the DB Navigator app on your phone if you are going to be using the train system. It is very helpful. read more

I really liked this train station, there are a lot of places to grab a quick bite. It is a great place to grab a cup of coffee and just people watch, inside or out. It is very like how Penn Station in NYC used to be. It was also close to our hotel (Marriott Courtyard) so it made it easy for local jaunts as well as for the trips we took to Salzberg, Austria and the trip to Frankfurt. With a EurRail pass the trip to Salzberg is included even if you don't have Austria on your list of "countries" to visit. That was cool, saved us about 25 Euro. Some things to note that are not great, the neighborhood is pretty rough, we saw pickpockets in action all over and my goodness, the smokers were everywhere. Keep your money close while wandering around here. read more

Since I don't have a lot of exposure to train stations in the states I was excited each time we traveled through the Munich Hauptbahnhof. I'm not sure how it compares to other stations in Germany or Europe for that matter but I thought it was great. The main level with regional and ICE trains is pretty spectacular, it actually feels like somewhere kind of cool to hang out. There is a ton of activity, shopping, food, drinks, souvenirs and of course people watching. This is a big train station, I don't even know how many levels there are total, must be at least 4-5, each servicing a specific type of train. Getting around is actually pretty easy, but I would definitely do a little research ahead of time if you're visiting or not familiar with the area. Two observations that hopefully help other travelers... 1, the self service kiosks DO NOT accept MasterCard or Visa. Have cash or another accepted form of payment. 2, bathrooms or WC are limited...make sure and take care of your business ahead of time. read more

For my 1300th review I chose this one. Having lived in this city for a while now, I have used this train station on many occasions and, it keeps evolving as time goes on. The recent renovations have made it more spacious and improved access. Once it is all completed I am sure it will be better :-) There are many entrances and exits to this station depending on which direction you are coming from and this can sometimes be confusing. Most trains that are either U Bahn, S Bahn or regional trains come through here. Just pay close attention to the signs. There are many buses (local and regional) that go from here as well as trams. Plenty of hotel options are available nearby from cheap to expensive. There are loads of food options at the station, all throughout the upper part (regional trains) and in the lower parts (U Bahn). This is one of the only places in the city to shop for food / groceries and other items on a Sunday (yes everything is shut in the city on Sunday's). I love two bakeries in particular here, Rischart (in the food court upper level) and Hopfitserei Ludwig Stocker (U Bahn level). I love the international news stands here, as you can get papers in many languages and, it is one of the only places in the city where you can find such things. You can also find Books and magazines from many countries here. A little bit expensive but, given the limited options for such things in Munich, not bad. If you are traveling by train in Munich or, in and out of Munich you are bound to end up here. It's a hive of activity and can sometimes be confusing. Like any other big train stations in Europe look for the information booths and they will sort you out :-) read more

The German trains run on time. Period. It's a marvelous and quite successful public transportation system. Costs are reasonable. For example, from Munich to Salzburg, Austria and back, for two people, only cost 31 Euros. What a bargain ! The trains are modern, clean, and quite efficient. The seats are about as comfortable as possible for public transportation. The train stations in Germany, at least the ones I've experienced, are well-designed, well-lit underground malls with shops, restaurants and fast-food available. There are the ubiquitous Subways, Burger Kings, and Starbucks to remind you of home, but by all means, try the local eateries. And bakeries? This train station, the biggest in Munich, has several bakeries, a German phenomenon, and one I really miss at home in San Diego CA. Based on the wall maps near the ticket dispensers, you can go just about anywhere in Munich using a train. Like I said, it's marvelous. read more

This is quite possibly my favorite train station in Europe - there's just a certain festive air about it whether it be the season of Christkindlmarkts or Oktoberfest or a random day of the week in between. I'd almost dare say this station is an attraction in it's own right with so many German stereotypes packed under one roof: strudels, pretzels, frankfurters bursting at the seams, etc. In addition to its kitschy German ways, it's easily reachable by foot to the core of the city and the interior of the station is extremely visitor-friendly. I like that you can find where your looking to go without being overwhelmed with too many shopping options. Give me food and a clean toilet and I'm set to go. read more

We took a train from Munich to Heidelberg from this station. I understand it's the largest and busiest train station in Munich, and it's also one of the cleanest, most efficient, and well-organized train stations I've ever seen. Unlike American train stations I frequent, it was spacious, offered tons of food options besides your usual Starbucks and Subway, and there wasn't the faintest scent of urine. I like the way all of the tracks line up together coming into the station, so it's easy to move from one platform to the next and it's cool to see trains coming and going to different countries. The information desk isn't the friendliest or most helpful in a general sense. However, they did really come through for us when one of our group members left a bag containing his passport, credit cards, and camera on a train to Budapest, when we boarded the wrong train and rushed off when we realized. I don't know how they made it happen, but after a 2-hour wait, the conductor found the bag and sent it back to us on another train, without a single item being missing. They were also nice about re-issuing our tickets for a later train, free of charge. You have to catch the right person to be able to help you, but we were very impressed and thankful that they were able to help us unf**k a bad situation. The good: - It's a mall and transit station all in one! As I mentioned, the food options can seem endless, including healthy salads, sandwiches, and pretzel sandwiches, fresh juices, bakeries, fresh produce, sushi wraps, pizza, Chinese bowls, chocolate shops, a little grocery store, a fancy Italian sit-down restaurant, and so much more. There are lockers for your belongings, a bookstore, touristy tchotchke shops that offer Oktoberfest attire, accessory shops, and cell phone charging stations. - German trains always run on time! The trains themselves are also modern and comfortable, with little dining cars on each, selling hot food, snacks, and beer and wine! The bad: - The restrooms are on the lower level and cost 1 euro to use. You have to go through a little locked turnstile after paying. Maybe this keeps them clean, but there are janitorial workers just hanging out with nothing to do in the restroom, including a few men in the ladies' room. One of them banged on my stall door to see if it was occupied, which made me uncomfortable. - Customer service isn't the greatest. We wanted some Starbucks and to find a place to hang out, charge our phones, and order some alcoholic beverages and food during our downtime. A woman angrily turned us out of an empty coffee shop for bringing in our Starbucks drinks, even though we explained that we were planning to buy food and alcohol ("But I sell all of that here!" she said.) We were so turned off that we didn't go back after we finished our drinks. Overall, a few minor annoyances but a great transit station. Americans can learn a lot from it! read more
