You know how when something you have assumed is always there is not there and it's a complete disaster? That happened when I arrived at MUC and the S-Bahn was down. I have never seen a less organized cluster of incompetence and it only got worse as I tried to get on a replacement bus. There were three people directing traffic and they were simply overwhelmed with the load of passengers that just kept arriving and arriving and arriving. No organization, no good announcements, and the people were no better. They were pushing, shoving and pretty much elbowing people to get on the rare buses that were slowly arriving. After about 30 minutes of watching this and seeing no real progress, when a taxi pulled up and said "Paid" I jumped on it. I shouted "Share ride!" and three others got in with me. For €20, I was driven to the main Munich train station. Seriously, Munich. Failures happen. Have a better way of dealing with it. If you want to visit downtown Munich, S-bhan is the best way to do so at lower cost without traffics from the airport. Ticket vending machine accepts credit card. Read closely as if you do the quick math, buying a day ticket will save you some money, instead of buying two one way tickets. Train runs frequently and easy to navigate without really understanding German language. read more

A 6-hour layover is long time. But 6 hours to shuffle from the airport to the center of Munich and back to the airport? Barely enough time. Still, I was sold on spending a slice of my afternoon with a friend outside the confines of the airport... walking around the city, grabbing a big beer, and indulging in real deal Bavarian food sounded like a dream. And, it was! All thanks to the S-Bahn stop just steps from both terminal 1 and 2 at Munich airport. Though it takes about 40 minutes to get to the center via the S1 or the S8 lines, locals tell me that it'll take just as long - or longer - to get there via taxi. You'll only pay 11,70 EUR for roundtrip fare while a taxi will cost you approximately 60 EUR... each way! Just make sure to check for re-routes as there's sometimes construction on the S8 line on Sundays... I found out the hard way, which set me back about 20 minutes.
