An old Roman Hosteria, Sardo as the name suggests is owned and run by a lady from Sardinia and the menu reflects this with lots of excellent fish dishes, cooked to perfection and Roman staples such as tripe, carbonara etc. What I especially liked was the staffs no nonsense honest approach to food; the Dorado some of the best prepared grilled fish I have ever tasted was not local - they were not 100% sure of the actual source but trusted their supplier. The kitchen team were two extremely skilled Romanian women. Anyone who knows their culinary history will look no further than Genoa and Venice's trading routes and the Italian population in Romania dispersed throughout that has influenced the culture there, including food. Despite its location on the outskirts of Rome, Il Ristoranto Sardo is well worth a visit.

It was our last…read moreday in Rome and since we wanted seafood, we thought that a Sardinian restaurant would be a good choice. Lucky us to have chosen Eleonora d'Arborea. Located in an outer neighborhood (you can take a bus from Pizazza Venezia to within a couple of blocks of the restaurant), we had a late reservation but entered to find the comfortable main rooms still active and lively. When our waiter realized we spoke English, he sought out the owner who helped us navigate the large menu of choices and with his encouragement, we made a meal of primarily the restaurant's starters. We had crudos and tartares, raw clams, and plates of fish and vegetables. The food was extraordinary. Probably the best seafood I've ever had, and I grew up on the New England coast and now live in NYC -- I think I know fish. We also enjoyed a delicious Sardinian wine and ended the meal with the owner's treat of two small glasses of a strawberry liqueur, house-made. Our only regret was that it was our last day in Rome and couldn't return to try more things on the menu. We appreciated the restaurant's friendliness, helpful service, and most of all, the superb fish and shellfish. If I can't travel to Sardinia, I can only hope to return soon to Rome so we can eat at Eleonara d'Arborea again.

Through the gracious staff tried to accommodate us, and assure us that the now weighty menu would satisfy, and indeed some dishes were quite delicious, especially the Insalata di Mare and the Spaghetti alla Vernaccia. The Rombo con Patate of last year (see photo) was nothing short of a disaster. I will not describe it further. We left the plate, got our bill and took our car back to our hotel. Go to Umbria and taste real truffle so you all know what truffle tastes like! Trying this place based on a recommendation of a fellow tourist we met during a tour is the worst decision of this trip! Folks, stop picking places based on TikTok and Instagram videos and just go eat in the real Italian food places. One thing I've learnt through my travels is that if you don't see any locals at the restaurant, that is not a good place! Just stick to where locals eat and you'll have the most delicious meals!

The people I was with got lobster linguini (which was pretty good!) and the trout with potatoes which was yummy. From the carbonara to the raw oysters, to the fried calamari and myriad of other authentic dishes it was definitely a place to try. I would say it was my favorite restaurant while in Rome and would I go back? Absolutely!
