We both got 4 carne asada tacos for $6. So cheap! (I've found that food is not necessarily cheaper here than in CA even with the high wages in CA just saying...) And man was it good. The meat was so well seasoned and they gave plenty of meat per street taco. The only thing missing is some darn Carne Asada fries! I wish that was a thing here! Oh and orange bang. Sunday after church hour long waits…read morefor a margarita and chicken, cheese, and rice after a long church sermon are somewhat of a ritualistic, ironic part of a typical southern weekend. However, I can swear by the fact that this proves my theory on Mexican food, in North Alabama at least, being worshipped only if it tastes like cardboard and has no seasoning. This is not my first time at Phil's, either location, and every time it is always unremarkable. But this time, it was inexcusably bad. My fiancée's margarita tasted like water with lime in it. There was no triple sec or tequila taste, though she did say she felt a little buzz from it. So clearly was there but, to what cost? $9 for a tasteless marg is a little high. The queso had legitimately no flavor. Not even cheese. Just like table cream. It even had peppers in it but you could not taste them. This was the time where we questioned if we had caught COVID in the 10 minutes we had been in there and lost our sense of taste. I quickly learned this wasn't the case when I tasted the salsa which had the flavor of body odor and canned tomatoes. The chips, however, nice and crispy. So a plus there. Get the chips. Don't dip them. We split the chicken fajitas and the 3 minutes it took to come out after we ordered it, should be taken as a sign that it's not going to be great. The grill marks felt laughable as the chicken had no texture or flavor of something that was grilled. It, along with the peppers and onions, had a slimy texture and, again, absolutely no flavor. It seemed to me that this was a classic case of either Sysco's Finest or Sous Vide cooking. The rice on the side also had no flavor but the beans actually had a great taste, but a few felt under cooked and slightly crunchy. The stand out was the home made tortillas which we thick and fluffy. This made me question why, if you're going to the effort of making tortillas and chips in house, why cut corners on your MAIN part of the meal? As for the service, it wasn't bad but the waiter had to be asked multiple times for refills and was very inattentive to our table while favoring who seemed to be regulars behind us. Phil's has the essence of "what a Mexican restaurant tastes like in Norway if opened by a British person who had Mexican food once on a work trip to Idaho." Decor that's trying too hard, food that has no seasoning, and service that is lacking.

I'd never been to the Madison Phil's but why would I expect anything different? I wouldn't. I didn't. I should have. Everything was different. Our friends arrived before us. They finished the chips and salsa. Since nothing was refreshed, we never got to enjoy this staple. I ordered the daily drink special, a mango margarita. Salt or sugar? Sugar, of course. Except it came with salt. I ordered shrimp fajitas, no peppers, pico on a separate plate - I absolutely cannot tolerate even one tidbit of raw onion. (I know, I know, as hard as I try not to be, I'm one of "those"). My food arrived, big scoop of pico between the sour cream and guac, rendering half of each off limits. No peppers? The order must have said "extra" peppers. There was actually a half of a pepper on the griddle sitting on top of a bed of mixed peppers. I picked around the peppers, so disappointed in my meal. While the fresh tortillas did rock, the rest of the meal wasn't even worthy of the energy it took to eat it. If the food wasn't bad enough, our server was awful. We got our food but then she disappeared. She never came back to ask if we wanted something else. She never refilled drinks. She didn't even give us our checks. It took a few an attempts to get her attention so we could pay and head out. It's a little hard to fathom how sister restaurants, owned by the same people, run by the same people, could be such complete opposites. There's no way that I'm giving up on Phil's. I'm just giving up on the Madison location.
