So Tillies makes me very sad, but also very happy! It seems the masses of Clontarf do be in and out of here all day and everyone is really friendly. I was here recently for a chin-wag with an old friend and we enjoyed our 90 minutes or so in the bright, bustling surroundings. We each had a cappuccino and a scone. The cappuccino was decent. Not too milky - just how like it. The scone was a wee bit dry but good all the same, served with cream and jam -my favourite! The staff were lovely, very friendly having chats with customers (everybody knows everybody so of course they are!) and just being generally smiley, which makes the cafe quite cheerful.

They have a good loyalty card stamp system. 6 stamps for a free coffee of choice. It has wheel chair access and outside decked seating with a canopy and parking. Nice open seating inside. However as it is the only coffee shop around for some distance it is not up to standards in other important places: 1. For a local coffee shop (like a "caf" on an English soap) it is really over priced for what it does. 3.50 for a cappuccino and over 5.00 for a packaged sandwich with no sides or presentation. Its a crazy price considered they rarely do the nice coffee designing any more. 2. The display food is very bad (and expensive) Avoid. one of the worst cheese cakes I have tasted. 3. the kitchen food is ok, but has a very limited menu. I was delighted when they got pancakes in but they appear to be those small fat ones you get in packages from the shops. 4. They recently shortened the opening hours. it used until 6pm now it closes at 5pm. Considering its location, that is a lot of after work customers counted out. 5. It is part of what used to be a large pub. It is now divided into a off licence to the right, cafe in middle and pub on the left. The issue is the toilets are over in the pub and there is sometimes people who have had a few to many, making their way through the cafe, from the pub to get to the off-licence. It also still feels like a local pub rather then a stand alone cafe. In all the place is good for a local. Good for a coffee with friends at weekends. The prices need to come down, for the crunch time we live in and for the quality of what you get. For a place that puts so much effort into decoration and customer survive they seriously need to put some effort into food.

They staff in there are nice, and when my little sister didn't want eggs in her mini breakfast they had absolutely no problem substituting for beans. My parents were very happy when I brought them there for breakfast too...my Dad even decided he deserved a breakfast dessert of a blueberry scone which he gave a big thumbs up. Coffee is surprisingly good and they do a range of lunches, smoothies and hot chocolates too. Much to sample! Downsides are that I always kind of feel it should be cheaper-it's on a small street in a residential area. They probably do good business from nearby schools though, as well as all the locals who seem to pop in. The fries are very freshly made....which unfortunately means that the place has a bit of a "caff" smell at times!

We then swapped half over as we were so excited to taste multiple dishes. My folks both went for steak and chips which looked divine. The food was all delicious. There was a decent amount but the plates were not overloaded and afterwards I felt full but not stuffed -content! My parents went for desserts and they were excellently presented and apparently very good. The decor is cute. There's many prints with a Clontarf or Pigeon House theme. The exposed pipe work and old fashioned light bulbs work really well with the oily green paint. The windows let in loads of light which makes the place very comfortable to sit in but not too bright. The decor is modern yet homely and cute. They have a shop at the side with really nice home ornaments/paintings/candles etc. really unique items. The most important part, the food. On my last visit I couldn't resist the warm chocolate fudge brownie with fresh cream on the side. This was after having a tapas style lunch( a chefs special that day). The scrambled eggs were good enough but not very tasty - nothing special there. I'd envisaged the tomato might be of the roma variety, might be lightly grilled with some interesting spices, might be juicy and delicious. I was horrified to find that it was simply 2 thin slices of wearied tomato, so very barely cooked and then thrown on the side of my plate. When I order 'freshly squeezed orange juice' I do not expect to see the staff pouring it from a Tesco container. Enough said. My breakfast 'treat' came to a saddening 10 euro, and to think I could have done it at home for about 3... Next time I will.

I ordered a scone and the cinnamon roll. I was super excited (and super hungry) to try them both, and ended up finishing them not because they were super delicious but because I had nothing else to eat during our road trip. The scone was quite dry, which I should have guessed given the size, and the cinnamon roll had a good cinnamon taste but felt a little stale and not soft. Thankfully, they included some Irish butter and that helped the scone go down. When I ordered the pastries, I asked the staff from where they got their pastries. Nobody knew, which to me was surprising but I give the benefit of a doubt that I expect this kind of knowledge because that's the American culture of food and restaurants - we are always demanding to know from where I food came! Regardless, I really like the local vibe and would consider coming here again next time I'm in town to try a sit down breakfast or lunch.

I asked her what would go in to a typical "Irish breakfast" and when I listed what things I liked and didn't like (mushrooms and tomatoes) she said she would be "right back" and this is what she presented. The Irish bread was SO GOOD. They make it in-house and you can really tell. I tried the black pudding first and, let me tell you, it was amazing. I ordered it at every restaurant I could find after that. I can't believe it's not common-place in the US. Everything else here was good as well. I would definitely recommend this place.
