So before I left Maryland for this trip to Westerly, I contacted them on FB and asked if they could suggest a 25-50 mile route. Amos provided me with a sweet 38 mile route in the country. I did it Sunday on my Litespeed Saber. My bike had a 42 inner chainring that had me out of the saddle for a lot of the 2.5 hour ride. Monday, I went by and inquired about a smaller inner chainring and Amos told me to bring it in (it was on my rack on the car). A couple hours later, it had a new 39 tooth chainring installed. Amos hit me up on FB messenger Tuesday and said he could install other chainrings/sprockets if the 39 wasn't enough. Today (Friday), I went for a 30+ mile ride on some of the same roads and it sure was nice not being out of the saddle for every hill! That was the perfect fix. I road by the shop on my ride and Amos even tweaked the front derailler for me while I waited. Thanks Amos and Marcus for getting me in and out. Such a great shop!

It turned out to be much more complicated than I realized, but they still took the time to repair the bike while I waited so my son could get back on it that afternoon. We don't live in the area and hadn't purchased the bike from Remy's, so they certainly didn't have to go out of their way for us. The fact that they did meant so much. A broken bike might seem like a small thing, but when you're a kid on summer vacation, it can ruin your whole week! Even more importantly, while working on the bike they discovered a significant safety issue related to some DIY work we had attempted at home. Their thoroughness and attention to detail may very well have prevented a serious accident or injury. I'm incredibly grateful that they didn't just fix the immediate problem--they took the time to make sure the bike was truly safe. Everyone we dealt with was kind, knowledgeable, thorough, and incredibly helpful. One other takeaway from this experience: buy your bike from a great local bike shop! We live in New Hampshire and had purchased my son's bike online. If I had it to do over again, I would absolutely buy local. Having knowledgeable people you can turn to for ongoing service, maintenance, and advice is worth so much--and Remy's has a great selection. I can't recommend Remy's highly enough. It gets periodic and professional tune ups, and they're always a pleasure to deal with. Always a pleasant exchange. This is the exceptional part. I have a friend who is homeless, and I found a "beater bike" to give to him. I brought it to Remy's, and we all decided it was too far gone to resurrect. The guys looked at each other, smiled, and one of them went in the back and wheeled out a pretty decent bike that was made serviceable rather easily. They gave this to me for my homeless friend! He loved it, jumped right on it with a huge smile on his face, and I know we helped Improve the quality of life for someone down on their luck. This is the kind of people that you deal with at Remy's! That means a lot to me. I'm glad to be their customer.

I loved that bike, and I loved Mr. Stedman, who patiently worked with li'l ol' 9-year-old me. Even then I knew more about bikes than my mother... Bike shop is still the same, except with newer models (of course) and newer management (although I swear sometimes I still see Mr. Stedman in the back room). Floods me with good feelings every time I go. It's a small shop, so the selection is limited, but they have everything you *really* need. Great about tune-ups and repairs, too.

So one sunny September day, my family is on Block Island and we decide to view everything from 2…read morewheels. Despite the abundance (and lines) of the bike shops near the ferry, we trek about 10 minutes up the hill, past a lovely little farm, to the Beach Rose Bicycles. We're quickly fitted with everything we need for a day of adventuring, including that all important trailer for the little one. I was prepared for a rigorous workout amongst the many hills of Block Island. Bikes are perfectly suited for the various stops including some much needed jumping in the water, photo ops, and breathtaking views. I was not prepared for a broken chain. But no problem. I called the shop and within minutes the owner was out with an air conditioned pick up truck. She piled everything in the truck, children and bikes, and we were off. By this point, my kids were more than happy to throw in the towel with the bikes and spend the remainder of the day on the beach. The owner was so gracious to drop us off at the beach. She filled us in on the history of the island on the ride. She was so kind and knowledgeable. I fully intend to return to Block Island next summer for a longer stay. And as my children will be that much older and their legs that much stronger, I will definitely be returning to Beach Rose Bicycles. Their service, quality, and charm made my day trip very enjoyable.
