I am looking for a new bike and as each bike shop in RI carries different brands I stopped in to Stedman's while in Wakefield to see what they have to offer. From what we could see, they carry Fox bikes, which is a very high end, off road, cycle. I'm a 'bike path' sort of gal and an 8k+ cycle is way out of my price bracket. They had others for less, but all were very high end. We walked in on the 'repair' side of the shop (two doors from the sidewalk into the building) and the staff member there directed us over to the sales floor. He was the most pleasant part of our visit. I saw one staff member in the sales area who remained behind the register during our entire visit and I think there was one other staff member assisting a customer with gear. There were several customers milling around without being assisted. We exited through the sales area door and the staff member behind the register there asked if they could help but our reconnaissance pretty much told us what we needed to know. There may have been more options we didn't see, but as it was busy and the floor models all have price tags, I think we got the gist. Still, it would have been nice to have an offer of assistance before we were leaving. I wonder if the other customers there feel the same way. read more

I always take my German HP Scorpion recumbent bike for an annual tuneup, and I am always thrilled. Stedman's is extremely busy, and you must call ahead for an appointment, but it is worth the wait. They itemize every they do to the bike how they repair, and what has to be done. Bikes are road tested before being released to the owner. I made an investment in my bike, and am always happy to know I have had great technicians go over it before the new season begins. read more

I rented a road bike here in Sept. 2021 and it was great. The employees were very patient in adjusting the saddle and pedals to suit me, and getting me the right sized helmet. They also recommended routes on beautiful quiet back roads out past URI (available on the ride with GPS app). The bike itself was high quality and in excellent condition. read more

We had a bike repair need when we were away from home. They took the bike and had it fixed in an hour! A real Godsend!

I had to put 1 star but truly give them none. I was put on "a list" for a new bike and was 1st in que. I was told it would take 2 weeks to arrive and should anticipate a call around then. I asked if I could put a deposit down to secure the bike and was told "no we dont take deposit and have been using the list for a while and not to be concerned." The bike ended up arriving a week early, I was not expecting a call and I miss it. I called today to follow up and was told the bike was sold to another person. No follow up call, no apologies, nothing. In short I wasted time and effort expecting a bike with reassurance they would get it for me. Really poor way to do business. Thanks for nothing. read more

The. Best. Bike. Shop. in. RI. Period. Before I was introduced to Stedman's, I had brought down a road bike (that was a few years old) with a cracked frame to another RI bike shop. This other bike shop said they couldn't do anything with the frame, except I could have someone weld it or junk it. They were nice guys, so I ended up buying a leftover road bike from them and continued to give them some business. Fast forward - I gave the bike with a cracked frame to my cousin who could aluminum weld figuring if he could fix it, he could have it. My cousin gave the frame to a friend of his who knows a guy at Stedman's. So, myself and my cousin and maybe another guy involved are complete strangers to Stedman's at this point. My cousin called me up maybe a week or so later " Stedman's is warrantying the frame!". I said "what!?". I didn't even buy a bike from them! The bike was only a few years old, I'm not suggesting you take a 10 year old bike for a warranty claim haha. These guys went to bat for me and I wasn't even a previous customer of theirs. I had never even walked into their shop previously- nor had ever heard about them. I was blown away. Without a doubt, they did that because they are just good people. It turned out to be a good bet for them. I bought 2 bikes from them shortly after. Since then, I have referred dozens of people to them. My family alone has bought about 18 or so new bikes in the last few years, and another dozen or more friends bought bikes. Not one person I have referred them to, has ever had a complaint. Great Staff- knowledgeable!! Always willing to go the extra mile. Everyone down there is super friendly. They have tons of bikes not shown on the floor- so don't be surprised if you are expecting to see a huge inventory on the showroom. Just ask, they probably have it or can easily get it. They are a small local owned bike shop. You can't get the same experience, knowledge, service at a large shop or online. We need companies like these to stick around! Don't shop online to save a few bucks. Shop and Support Local! These guys are about an hour drive for me, and it's totally worth it! read more

Awesome experience at Stedman's! I needed a shifter cable for my road bike installed. Every bike shop I went to said they couldn't do in for another 3-4 days. My father in-law recommended I call Stedman's. I gave them a call thinking I would here the same thing I did from all the other shops. To my surprise the tech said he could probably get it done same day and if not the next day. I dropped off the bike and an hour and a half later the bike was all set! They won me over! Glad I called them! I live within 5 miles of 2 other bike shops but I will gladly drive the 45mins to Stedman's from now on! read more

I bought my first bike here in 1978 -- a blue Schwinn Traveler for $278. I remember how much it cost because at nine years old, it wiped out my savings account. I loved that bike, and I loved Mr. Stedman, who patiently worked with li'l ol' 9-year-old me. Even then I knew more about bikes than my mother... Bike shop is still the same, except with newer models (of course) and newer management (although I swear sometimes I still see Mr. Stedman in the back room). Floods me with good feelings every time I go. It's a small shop, so the selection is limited, but they have everything you *really* need. Great about tune-ups and repairs, too. read more

I was on a New England tour when my shifting problems became intolerable. On a recommendation from the Charlestown Visitors Center, I made it to Stedman's in Wakefield. It had been raining all morning and I came in like a drowned rat. It didn't bother them at all that I was making puddles all over. The shop was reasonably busy with more presentable customers, but they took my bike right in. The mechanic took the time to show me how my dropout was bent and my chain routed incorrectly through the rear derailleur. He fixed those problems and adjusted the shifting. My only regret is that I didn't have room in my panniers to buy a bunch of stuff to help make up for the pittance they charged me for all that work. And they did all this with smiles all around. I can't say enough good things about this shop. read more

NBX in Warwick did a hack job of a "tune up" on my bike in February of 2018, for your "special spring $100.00 tune up" for the price of $242.97(still have the receipt)!! Lousy "tune up"... I had horrible derailleur issues all last summer. So I took it to Stedman's last month. Thanks to their knowledge, expertise and professionalism... they informed that there was a recall on my Specialized Rock Hopper. I guess NBX had NO CLUE about the recall last year? Thank you Stedman's... all new parts, running like brand new and NO CHARGE!! It's the bike that I bought at good ol' Caster's(now NBX) back in 1995, that NBX had no clue about a recall!! That's is poor customer service. So I'm all set NBX! A bit farther to drive to Stedman's... but definitely worth the trip to Wakefield!! Never to return to NBX again. read more

We just rented 2 adult bikes, a kid trailer and helmets from Stedman's this past week. We traveled from CA to RI for a vacation in Matunuck and never rented with them before. I called about a week before our trip and they were able to save some bikes for us. They made the process super easy, offered delivery and pick up from our rental home, communicated often by calling and leaving voice mail and handled all payments over the phone. The delivery and pickup was on time and their company van was perfect for the job and very professional. We even requested to extend the rental one day and it was no problem. Highly recommend and will definitely use them again. Also the bikes were great! read more

This is a great small bike shop. I ordered my Electra bicycle through them and their customer service was great. They answered all of our questions. When I had an issue with my bicycle because the fender bent when it fell over, it was close to closing time, but they still took it in and they were very helpful. What was even better is when my BF had a problem with his bicycle while we were biking around town (he purchased his bike somewhere else) the store was closed when we stopped by, but when we were about to leave one of the guys came by to drop some stuff off at the store and offered to help him out with his bike even though the shop was officially closed for the day. Love this place! Bought my son's bike there a few years ago. It has been a great bike. He ran over a nail and popped a tire. I called to see if they could fix it. They were SOOOOO nice...said, "Yes, of course. bring it in." I dropped it off before work- picked it up after. Only cost about $15. read more

I just started cycling this past July, and was so nervous going in to find a new bike. I was worried I'd be treated poorly and condescendingly, and found exactly the opposite at Stedman. The staff member who helped me pick out my bike took hours--literally hours--with me making recommendations based on what I told him I was looking for, having me do test drives, and explaining all the other equipment to me. He was candid and upfront. If something was too pricey without a good return on investment, he'd tell me. He was never pushy, listened to everything I said, and made it a wonderful experience. With new bike purchases, Stedman offers a free tune up after 30 days or 30 rides. I brought my bike in for the free tune up today and it was easy as that--explain I'd bought it July 5th, gave my contact information, and let them take it back into the shop! I was also helped with clips and riding shoes by another employee, who was so pleasant, helpful, and informative. I can't recommend Stedman more. It's by far my preferred bike shop, and I'd travel miles just to come back and do business with them! read more
