it's summer in new england, a most definitely short-lived annual phenomenon, and all i could think of for weeks was a one night pilgrimage to block island with my husband. fresh air, cold water, seafood, and most definitely bike riding with impromptu visits to beautiful sandy and rocky beaches. after arriving on the ferry, my bicycle in tow, and my husband intending to rent an appropriate self-powered unit, we headed to our hotel, checked in and went to find a bicycle rent shop. aldo's is well known on the island, where we always go. they have a large amount of bicycles, priced similarly to other places around, but many meant for very short people, and those like my husband, basketball player-sized. so we rent a bike. unfortunately after a few moments, the bike started to make an odd clanking noise. we brought it back without issue, exchanged for another vehicle. a short ride later, however, the chain on MY bike came unhinged, and would refuse to shift gears after readjusting the chain. we rode from the south lighthouse back to the bike shop, and in an hour of desperation, i asked the owner if they had a mechanic on hand. he recognized us from before, and quickly called his young handyman, who went through all of the gears on my bike, readjusted the breaks, and had me test it out. it ran better than it did the first day out of the bicycle shop, and when i asked how much i owed him, the owner glanced and said "we're square." that's what i call great service. at the very least, i asked if i could buy them their next round of beers or coffee, and they were gracious enough to take a small tip. they really saved my vacation. god knows riding bicycles on block island is one of the best parts of visiting this little place. i hope that you'll trust aldo's mopeds and bike rental for all your rental needs. they're good guys. and have fun on block island. it's pretty spectacular to see on two wheels. read more

this place was truly awful - we rented 5 bikes and they were all broken. the chains falling off - the brakes not working- the gears unavailable. truly terrible service - all that could be forgiven but when we returned we got a tremendous amount of attitude saying " chains don't fall off by themselves " read more

Ok so I don't know if this is the actual place we rented mopeds from but this was one of the most fun places I have ever been this was amazing, every single lace we went with the mopeds was wonderful and being on one was super fun I'll put pics of were we were also the cracked mug and the ice cream shop next to it were absolutely amazing would recommend renting these and exploring the island will go again. read more

Rented 8 bicycles with a few friends. They take a copy of your credit card information for a deposit. Upon returning the bike, it becomes clear that the attendant gave my credit card information to another person. They offered no help in rectifying the situation and seemingly did not care. I would recommend the other rental locations on the island. read more

We've rented scooters/mopeds from Aldo every time we come to Block. They got new mopeds this year which was nice, friendly staff, hassle free rental and willing to cut a deal if you rent a few mopeds at a time. We'll be back next summer! read more

The staff at Aldo's was reliable and answered all the questions we had before hopping on our moped. I was impressed with how fast everything was. Pretty much you just stop by, sign a few papers and within 5 minutes you're on a moped buzzing around Block Island. My moped felt safe and easy to ride. The moped prices are exactly the same at every spot on the island so there's really no reason to shop around. read more

Don't know about the Old Harbor location but we rented bikes from the New Harbor location and the guy who helped us was a total prick. Yeah, I get it, we're stupid tourists and you're the hip island dude, and our questions about where to bike are trivial and ignorant. But can you at least do your job and fill the goddamn tires? Two stars because they let us drop off the bikes at the Old Harbor location - we didn't want to deal with that guy again. read more

Buy Aldo's doughnuts don't rent their bikes. We rented 4 bikes for 2 hours. I understand that these bikes take a beating, but my bike was dangerous to ride since it pulled to the left (into traffic) because the front brakes rubbed the tire. I called the shop and they said they'd bring another bike to me, GREAT, but they never showed up. When I mentioned this to the guy in charge (who never once looked up from his phone while talking at me). He argued that I wasn't where I said I would be. This was a communication breakdown on their part since I told the person who answered the phone that I was going to keep going since my 2 hours were ticking. This part was never relayed to him. When I returned the bike I said they shouldn't rent the bike out before fixing it or retire it because it was garbage. I was then asked in a very "little-lady-you-don't-know-anything" tone if I had anything in the front basket because that can throw off the steering. What? Such an absurd statement from a person who refused to look up from their phone. They clearly don't care about your island experience. I didn't get a refund and walked away frustrated. If I can save one person the trouble of renting from Aldo's I will feel better. Go to Island Bikes or any place else. Buy Aldo's doughnuts don't rent their bikes. read more

DON'T DO IT. JUST DON'T DO IT. We vacation to BI almost every year and rent bikes each time. By FAR Aldo's was the worst. Staff - First let me say something positive: VERY nice staff. But slightly incompetent. While we weren't looking, the clerk shoved my beach bag under a bungee cord, destroying a bottle of sunblock and smashing bananas that we had in the bag...which ended up everywhere. Then, they ask for your ID and take it (weird). Then by the end of the day I had forgotten that they took it, but since it's their practice, they should have remembered. They did not and I realized it when I tried to order a drink at dinner. BUT the clerk dropped my id off at the hotel. Like I said. VERY Nice but incompetent. HOWEVER their bikes are by far the most inferior of all the bikes available. Tires -My bike tires were bald, my partner's were dry rotted. Gears - my partner's gears kept slipping out of gear, which ended up injuring him. My gears were so difficult to change it took me awhile to figure out they even worked. Additionally, they didn't respond until I had clicked the gear shift at least three times. Basket on bike - mine was too close to the tire and made a weird noise every time I stood to pedal. Also no kickstand and the seats were gross. They were so nice that we just gave them the benefit of the doubt despite the look of the bikes. Then by the time we figured out how much we hated the bikes, we were too far away to do anything. What a nightmare. read more

What a train wreck. Abrupt, gruff, they just throw the bikes at you. And the bikes are in terrible condition. We returned them immediately. They were good about the returns, but that's probably because they have so much practice. read more

They removed the front gears on their bikes because they're clearly too lazy to continue maintaining their bikes, I went through three bikes before I found one that wasn't rubbing the chains. Other than that, the service was alright. read more

My daughter and I visited BI on our annual Mother/Daughter trip. We decided to rent mopeds to explore the island, never haven ridden before. The staff was great in giving us a short lesson, picking the right helmets and NOT being condescending to us. And the bikes were brand new. We had a blast and both agreed that the mopeds were the best part of the trip. I would def recommend them! read more

Awful. Got four bicycles, two didn't work right. One, the seat kept sliding up and down, making it difficult to ride. and my sisters knees kept going above her waist. The second bike, the brakes weren't working right, and the tires had little air, leaving the bike unbalanced. We didn't realize till we were out, and the second bike sent the person over the handlebars when she tried to stop. Been renting bikes for probably 20 years in various states, locations, never had the issue before. Didn't even know what to do once we realized. Once we got back, the people were very uncaring and rude about it. Don't recommend. read more

The worst renting experience i have ever had. the owner is the rudest person on the planet. He was yelling constantly at customers and employees. I was quoted a price and got overcharged. does not deserve to be in the tourism / customer service business. Avoid at all costs.this happened at the other location but i dealt with the owner so it doesnt really matter. read more

The staff was local and friendly but these bikes are pieces of crap. My wife's bike chain fell off and she barely made it back. My bike was 1 gear and impossible to get up the hills. We had 2 other couples behind us walking their bikes in because they were broken. BTW I participate in triathlons and I'm an avid biker. These were a total rip off. If you want to get a decent bike rent it in New Harbor near Payne's dock. read more

We rented 2 bikes for 2 hours. Twenty minutes into the rental period one of the pedals/crank arm fell off of one of the bikes. Fortunately, no significant injury other than a minor scrape resulted. We called the telephone number that we were instructed to call if there were any problems with the bikes. The call rolled to voicemail that stated the mailbox had not been set up and that no message could be recorded. It took approximately 20 minutes of repeated calls before someone finally answered and said they would be there in 10 minutes. When no one showed up for over 30 minutes we called again only to get the voicemail message stating that no messages could be recorded. After approximately 10 more minutes we reached someone on the phone, a different person than the first time, who knew nothing about our problem but said that they would have someone come out to help. This time after about 10 minutes someone did arrive and gave us a different bike. With no time left we hurried back to turn in the bikes. Yet another shop person accepted the return and agreed that we should get a refund but stated they were not authorized to make that decision and called his manager. The manager terminated the conversation with the subordinate and when called back did not pick up the call. The shop person promised that he would make sure that the manager would call us the following day which never happened and when we called only got the dysfunctioning voicemail message. This shop was not only poorly run, did not follow through with promises, but rented bikes in poor state of repair. read more

Very friendly staff. Great prices. Took the mopeds out for the day and had a blast with the family a must try. I'm a big guy and it kept motoring even up hill. All and all a must try and definitely worth a try for the price of $60 for 2 hours read more
